A 12-year-old boy shot by Cleveland police for playing with a toy gun died in the hospital as a result of his injuries, the Associated Press reports.
The kid, Tamir Rice, did not threaten the police and was armed only with an airsoft gun. Police maintain that the fake weapon was missing its identifying orange tip, however.
Here’s how it happened: Rice went to a local park to play with his friends on Saturday afternoon. Somebody saw them with the gun and called 911; the caller specifically told the operator that it was “probably fake.” Nevertheless, the officer dispatched to the scene saw Rice putting the gun into his waistband and told him to raise his hands. According to The Huffington Post, the kid did not immediately comply; instead he tried to take the gun out of his pants. The officer fired twice, hitting Rice in the stomach. He died Sunday.
The Cleveland Police Patrolmen’s Association maintains that the dispatcher did not relay the information that Rice’s gun was probably fake. That’s obviously a very important detail, if true. And we will certainly need more details to render any kind of judgment. The officer has been placed on leave, and the department is investigating. The U.S. Department of Justice was, in fact, already investigating Cleveland PD for its aggressive use of force in the past.
So, we’ll see. But this is terrible, whatever the justification—or lack thereof.

According to witnesses, he was pointing the gun at people, but the cops still should have had the common sense to see it was a kid with a toy gun.
Growing up (kid in the country) it was not uncommon at all for me to be walking down the road with a rifle, a real one of course. No one got excited, no one called the police, it was no big deal, and I never killed anyone.
So now we have all these police to protect us. Did I read somewhere that you’re more likely to be shot by the police than robbers or terrorists?

1) “The gun was “probably” fake..” Soooo, you don’t actually know one way or the other, do you?
2) “Tamir” was pointing the gun ‘at people’… are we to take this as him being a fucking douche with the we-don’t-know-if-it’s-fake gun and he’s pointing it at passers-by?
3) “Tamir” stuck the we-don’t-know-if-it’s-fake in his waistband, gangsta style and then did not comply with commands given to him by a police officer.
4) The we-don’t-know-if-it’s-fake gun was missing the orange thingy that identifies it as being a fake…
NB: My son shoots Airsoft guns. I was just upstairs in his room, looking at his. By all accounts, except for that orange thingy, it’s a dead-on 1-to-1 match for the genuine article. Color, controls, sights, everything… Even the weight of the thing is about the same as the genuine article.
And, having used them, repaired them and built them – professionally – know what I’m talking about. Those orange thingys can be removed, but it’s not advised and it’s not exactly “easy” to do so… you have to make an effort at it – intentionally removing it. They don’t just “fall off”… It would be easier to spray-paint over them than to remove them. Which means “Tamir” – or someone else – intentionally disabled the one thing that identifies it as being a phony…
5) Put yourself in that park, before the cop showed up. You’re walking along with your wife and you’re carrying concealed legally. As you’re walking past “Tamir” and his buddies, suddenly and with no warning, he pulls out a Beretta 92F and points it at your head… or worse, your wife’s head. You react to the perceived threat and deck “Tamir”…
What matters in a shooting is what the shooter perceives to be a threat..
If a guy comes onto my property waving a knife around and says he’s going to kill me and my family, I will do what I have to do. That the knife was rubber and harmless doesn’t change the fact that I perceived what I thought – what any reasonable person would think – to be a genuine threat to my life and the lives of my family…
Bottom line: “Tamir” got stupid with an Airsoft gun. “Tamir” got dead.

The aspiring rapper, NBA star, rocket scientist removed the orange part that identifies it as a toy gun. These things are very realistic looking. Does that justify the shooting? I don’t know, I wasn’t there. In any case, I’m sure Obongo’s son was told that he didn’t have to obey the POlices because dey all rayciss.
Said it before will say it again. When you draw the attention of a police officer compliance with instructions are a requirement. Doing otherwise is a life thearthing, unnecessary, stupid, risk to a continued existence on planet earth.

Shootings like this are becoming commonplace now. IMO, don’t call the cops for any reason other than a traffic accident. There’s everything to lose and nothing to gain. How many fucking times have we read TBP posts involving some dumb ass who called the police (over nothing) and someone ends up dead? It seems to be every week now.

Here is the deal – if that kid pointed that thing at a member of my family, and I was packing, I would have shot him dead no questions asked. And I would have slept well afterward. That thing, especially without the orange front, looks like a real gun. And I would NOT allow someone – kid or not – to point what appears to be a real gun at my family.
You would have to be a goddamn moron to let your kid run around with that thing – might as well have hung a fucking target around his neck. Anyone can tell a bb gun or a pop gun at a glance. No way known you could tell that was not real at a glance, and any hesitation could result in catastrophe.

Basically I agree with Billy and Llpoh. If the kid was 4’1″ I might be more predisposed to think it was a toy, but if he was 5’3″ or taller and exhibiting the kind of threatening behavior described, it’s no surprise he was shot. I’m inclined to blame the parent or parents, but for all I know his parent(s) didn’t even know he had the damned thing. They might have even warned him against having an Airsoft gun. Some kids are stupid. He died of stupid.
