Apparently while James was still wearing short pants, ergo not paying too much attention fifty years ago when on 04 Jan 1965 in LBJ’s State of Anarchy speech he was in fact telling America to bend over and assume the position.

iMHO most of this came post 9/11, although a program did exist prior to 9/11 to allow local law enforcement to obtain surplus military equipment, including helicopters. Most of these were beat to shit and required work, but still, a $2 million aircraft for free was attractive to many forces.
So the Iraq and Afghan wars and all the gear produced have created a glut and that’s trickled down. That and gang violence resulting in street criminals with automatic weapons, as the LAPD learned the hard way during the famous “North Hollywood Shootout” bank robbery in 1997: 400 cops vs 2 heavily armed robbers https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tsOWSDtxERU

It happened in stages with the advent of Domestic war; The War on Drugs, The War on Poverty, and The War on Terror. All of which require Warriors, not Public Servants.

Get used to it, Bea – I imagine the “…we will be begging for them to save us…” got you that. There is an unknown entity of a libertarian bent whose existence cannot be proved but he judges according to his law or whim or both.
We can only learn from our mistakes or persist and keep getting downed. Folks who get downed a lot for whatever reasons usually disappear into limbo or they become exalted legends like SSS and LLPOH.

When did thing not change? To suggest TV cops of the past were the norm in the actual past would be wrong. Chances if you’re a quaint middle-class person you won’t be any more harassed than 50 years ago. Conversely how many poor and/or Black people had it easy with the police back in the olden days?
