“Hottest Year On Record?” Think Again! Meet ‘Seasonally-Adjusted’ Seasons

Tyler Durden's picture

Day after day in modern macro-economics, investors are bombarded with ‘odd’ seasonal adjustments that spuriously lift (in the case of growth-related variables) or reduce (in the case of inflation-related variables) data to ensure a constant flow of “we must keep offering free/cheap money” narrative-confirming news.

However, as The Telegraph reports, it appears this “seasonal adjustment” smoke-screen has reached the just as bifurcated opinioned world of global warming trends and Climate-Gate

Although it has been emerging for seven years or more, one of the most extraordinary scandals of our time has never hit the headlines. Yet another little example of it lately caught my eye when, in the wake of those excited claims that 2014 was “the hottest year on record”, I saw the headline on a climate blog: “Massive tampering with temperatures in South America”. The evidence on Notalotofpeopleknowthat, uncovered by Paul Homewood, was indeed striking.

Puzzled by those “2014 hottest ever” claims, which were led by the most quoted of all the five official global temperature records – Nasa’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies (Giss) – Homewood examined a place in the world where Giss was showing temperatures to have risen faster than almost anywhere else: a large chunk of South America stretching from Brazil to Paraguay.

Noting that weather stations there were thin on the ground, he decided to focus on three rural stations covering a huge area of Paraguay. Giss showed it as having recorded, between 1950 and 2014, a particularly steep temperature rise of more than 1.5C: twice the accepted global increase for the whole of the 20th century.

But when Homewood was then able to check Giss’s figures against the original data from which they were derived, he found that they had been altered. Far from the new graph showing any rise, it showed temperatures in fact having declined over those 65 years by a full degree. When he did the same for the other two stations, he found the same. In each case, the original data showed not a rise but a decline.

Homewood had in fact uncovered yet another example of the thousands of pieces of evidence coming to light in recent years that show that something very odd has been going on with the temperature data relied on by the world’s scientists. And in particular by the UN’s Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), which has driven the greatest and most costly scare in history: the belief that the world is in the grip of an unprecedented warming.

How have we come to be told that global temperatures have suddenly taken a great leap upwards to their highest level in 1,000 years? In fact, it has been no greater than their upward leaps between 1860 and 1880, and 1910 and 1940, as part of that gradual natural warming since the world emerged from its centuries-long “Little Ice Age” around 200 years ago.

This belief has rested entirely on five official data records. Three of these are based on measurements taken on the Earth’s surface, versions of which are then compiled by Giss, by the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and by the University of East Anglia’s Climatic Research Unit working with the Hadley Centre for Climate Prediction, part of the UK Met Office. The other two records are derived from measurements made by satellites, and then compiled by Remote Sensing Systems (RSS) in California and the University of Alabama, Huntsville (UAH).

To fill in the huge gaps, those compiling the records have resorted to computerised “infilling” or “homogenising”, whereby the higher temperatures recorded by the remaining stations are projected out to vast surrounding areas (Giss allows single stations to give a reading covering 1.6 million square miles). This alone contributed to the sharp temperature rise shown in the years after 1990.

But still more worrying has been the evidence that even this data has then been subjected to continual “adjustments”, invariably in only one direction. Earlier temperatures are adjusted downwards, more recent temperatures upwards, thus giving the impression that they have risen much more sharply than was shown by the original data.

In reality, the implications of such distortions of the data go much further than just representing one of the most bizarre aberrations in the history of science. The fact that our politicians have fallen for all this scary chicanery has given Britain the most suicidally crazy energy policy (useless windmills and all) of any country in the world.

Hi all,

I very much like both sites, TBP as well as Tyler Durden economic analyses. However, sharing such very low quality stuff regarding global warming is hurting everybody.

That analysis by Christopher Brooker is false and is very close to a conspiracy theory. A carefull reader should find that out very fast. Here is a good video explaining why and how the data adjustment is being done. We should always stick with the best science available!

Keep going a good job,

Here’s the thing. CO2 levels are much higher than anytime in the past xxthousand years. How do scientists know this? By measuring air bubbles trapped in ice cores, among other methods. If CO2 levels get too high, mammals can’t breathe. The release of methane from methane bubbles trapped in thawing tundra is another problem, ’cause methane is even worse than CO2.
We need to figure out a way to maintain the Earth without fucking it up more.

3E – you gotta do better than that. The scientists proclaiming climate change is man-made are generally bought and paid for by left organizations. Wouldn’t want to lose all that money they get for “research” now would they? All scientists rely on funding, one way or another. Are they all bought? Some are, of course. But selective accusations of someone bought and paid for is a pretty poor replacement for refuting their facts.

Look at the time stamps. I posted at 8:35pm. He posted at 9:01pm. 26 minutes. Not nearly enough time to get through the first and second parts, much less 3 and 4….

Instead, he throws ad hominem attacks around, saying Prof. Bob has been “bought and paid for” – directly implying that the good Professor is making shit up to support whomever is paying him or is making shit up on their orders.

They don’t argue things on their own merit because they can’t… all they do is cast aspersions and accuse us of being “haters” when we shoot down their crappy theories…

And I haven’t even begun to address “carbon credits”, who’s brokering them (*cough* SOROS *cough*) and who’s profiting from them. Industrialized nation with plenty of cash? Here, buy these “carbon credits” and “we” will graciously “allow” you to keep on polluting at your present levels.. can’t pay? So sorry… suck it up.

The fact that Soros is a Jew billionaire communist who got his start selling his own people out to the Nazis to save his own skin is generally lost on the ecotards… or why him and his butt-buddy Gore are so heavily invested in companies who broker those magical carbon credits…

Meh… they don’t give two shits anyway, I bet…

Alexander,

So they went through the raw data, found the readings that were “too cold”, decided that the thermometers must not have been properly calibrated and “corrected” the data. I wonder if they looked the raw data that was extra hot, put it down to incorrectly calibrated equipment and corrected those data downward. Actually, I don’t wonder at all. I’m sure they didn’t. Ad as far as looking at all of the raw land-based data, most of that is affected by growing heat islands. Virtually all of the land-based data in the US is adjusted for heat island effect. We’re supposed to trust that their adjustments are perfect and agenda-free? Yeah, don’t think so.

If you watch those videos of Professor Bob’s, he addresses that very point. It would be hilarious if you didn’t know they were still counting the data collected from these compromised points as valid, and using them to sell their “global warming/climate change” hoax…

Some of those data collection points haven’t been changed or maintained in years. Some are in major cities. Like, downtown and sitting on asphalt. Or are situated right next to heating ducts…

I’m sure they looked at the data from those and said it was no bigs that their data collection points were in downtown LA… in the summertime… sitting on blacktop or hot asphalt… or right next to a heating or cooling duct exhaust vent… no bigs at all…

Hi all.

It is quite unfortunate, that such hateful/ignorant commenters are grouped here, attacking others without rational reason. It lowers the credibility of other analyses presented here, unfortunately.

The data adjustment is being done because ALL nearby stations show warming, and thus there is no reason to expect cooling at that one station. Sorry, no left-wing conspiracy here. Scientists are just doing their job.

BTW, we have myriads of other evidence that Earth is rapidly warming, and we also know that GAU (growth as usual) is not an option. Or is it?

Isn’t that what you guys here are against? Against the status quo that seeks growth as all cost? Or am I totally wrong on your motives reading TBP and ZH?

“Global warming models/predictions have been an abject failure for 20 years”. Really?

I don’t think so:

“A new paper takes an in-depth look at the suggestion that climate models routinely overestimate the speed at which Earth’s surface is warming – and finds the argument lacking.

In other words, while the models aren’t capable of capturing all the “wiggles” along the path of rising temperatures, they are slightly too cool just as often as they’re slightly too warm.”

I post videos of an extremely qualified geologist who has personally examined ice cores and deep sea cores – because it was his job – and comes to the conclusion that the “global warming/climate change” theory is hokum and bunk, the product of computer generated scaremongering, political agendas and fantasy.

Not only that, but he step-by-step demolishes the “global warming” theory using their own data and the scientific method…

What happens? Fucking zealots like this Alex asshat not only don’t bother to watch who is arguably the only objective and rational scientist I’ve seen on the matter and judge his arguments based on their own merit, he goes Full Retard and doubles down on the stupid by citing “Scientists” (whoever they are) who are “doing their job”. Backed up by blog posts.

WOW! With those credentials, we should all admit defeat and apologize! Said nobody… fucking ever…

And this is just so cute… bless his heart…

And what is “politically driven”? You mean the need to preserve our biosphere for future generations? – Asshat Alex

“Preserve our biosphere”? Heh… hilarious… reminds me of that one particular King who stood on the beach, ordering the tide not to come in…

Fact is, the Earth’s climate has been changing since Day 1. You want to “preserve” our “biosphere? That means putting it in a state of unchanging stasis – something that is not only impossible, but believing one can do so demonstrates a mental break so profound it borders on mental illness. How do you propose we put nature in a state of stasis and so “preserve” it? It sounds good and all when you’re speaking to other eco-tards, but let’s see how you propose to do it. It would require a closed system controlled from the outside to even attempt something, and then it would only work for a short period of time… and that’s discounting the fact that the Earth is not a closed system and is being bombarded by hundreds, if not thousands, of object on a daily basis – any one of which could carry some germ or bacteria which wipes us out…

And I find your hypocrisy nauseating. You pretend to be all tree huggy and all about “Saving the Earth”.

The Earth does not need saving. The Earth is just fine. In fact, we could set off every nuke we have on Earth right now, simultaneously. Irradiate the planet and drive all life to the edge of extinction…. for many, it will spell extinction..

But, in a million or two years, life will come back in all it’s diversity. It won’t look anything like it does right now, but it will come back. Perhaps even sentient.

So, you phonies don’t mean “Save the Earth”…. you mean “Save ME!”

Geologic Global Climate Changes
Author: Nasif Nahle
Scientific Research Director-Biology Cabinet
(Additional editing of this English text by TS)

ABSTRACT

Scientific studies have shown that atmospheric Carbon Dioxide in past eras reached concentrations that were 20 times higher than the current concentration. Recent investigations have shown that the current change of climate is part of a larger cycle known as climatic lowstand phase which precedes a sequential warming period known as transgression phase. The purpose of this evaluation is to demonstrate that the Earth is actually cooling, in the context of the total geological timescale, and that the current change is equivalent to a serial climate phase known as lowstand.

I laugh every time I’m called a “Climate Change Denier”

Because its the same people who level this charge at me and so many who deny (or ignore) the earths climate has changed many times without mans existence and only believe that the climate is now changing, because of man.

I love how the shills for our murdering, elite, overlords, are all so high and mighty about it.

Reminds me of the rise of Christianity.

History is FILLED with times the rich guys riled up the serfs with lies so the vast majority will just lay down and open their butt cheeks.

With the demands by the left to support and grow the underclass of defective genes to the point we have reached Peak People (more calories consumed than produced), we will NEED global warming to feed us all.

To the believers, I respectfully ask that you quit getting your scientific facts from bought and paid for shill organizations. Try going forth and reading ACTUAL scientific reports and ACTUAL articles written by scientists.

3E says that deniers are somehow helping our overlords, without even considering that our overlords will win either way, her/his way means HUGE wins. What, you think Al Gore built an energy consuming 13,000 square foot hog of an ocean side home on his measly $200k a year in retirement funds? HAAAHAAA.

Tools. The earth has been cooling for 15 years, or for millions if you really understand climate and change.

The actual historic and scientific odds are greater of us moving into another Ice Age, than warming period. THIS theory has solid data backing it going back over five decades.

Either way they are both THEORIES.

One thing for sure, YOUR belief and support will result in the true beginnings of the end. Where do you think people that can barely feed their kids are going to come up with another few thousand a year for heat and lights?

Meanwhile the same set of rich fucks, including Exxon and Haliburton execs, will become even richer.

AND our President will burn more fossil fuel going to the golf course, or supplying the plastic water bottles at his EPA meeting that is going to wipe out another strata of our non-government middle class.

Meanwhile our money is in China already AND they are pumping out more pollution that we EVER did at the peak of our manufacturing.

Your solution? Fewer jobs, fewer middle class, keep buying cheap Chinese shit cause you will be too broke to buy much else.

Today you support our destruction through this BS meme, tomorrow it will be through forced vaccinations, or medications, or frankenfoods.

I sadly have hate in my heart for people like you, I have to work on that to get past this world and further ahead in the next.

For today though, I AM a human with free will, and I freaking HATE those that are helping destroy our way of life and further indenture our children and grandchildren. My only hope is that those like you find the cost even more bitter than the rest of us will.

Because us “deniers” will at least see the turmoil and destruction and know where the hell it came from.

Carbon reduction is but one more means to remove us from our wonderful, once in human history, lives. Still think its a good tradeoff? Less food, less warmth, more illness, more China pollution?

Won’t change a freaking thing about the weather though. Not one. Not anywhere. Not here.

Alexander, You didn’t answer my point. Did the only “corrections” (to ostensibly mis-calibrated equipment readings) result in higher temps than the raw data would indicate? Were there any such “corrections” where they adjusted the temps downward? In the entire world? Go back to your alarmist sources and find out where they’d adjusted the temps downward. It’s implausible that any calibration errors would only result in inordinately low temperature readings. Calibration errors should happen in both directions if they happen at all. I’ll await the specifics on where the raw temps were corrected downward. I won’t hold my breath, though.

Because the temperature has been DROPPING for the past 15 years (the GW’s call it “temporary reprieve”), where is the correlation?

And do I really need to mention what has happened industrially speaking since 1979?

We moved our production from the HIGHLY environmentally regulated West (Europe & US), to the NOT regulated, 51% government owned, Asian businesses.

The fucking pollution is not being caused by middle class ‘murkins choice. It has been caused by the globalist, just in time, industrial policies that have already gutted our middle class and are now working on starving or freezing us to death to show “progress.” So how will taxing US fix ANYTHING?

We CAN’T cut much more production or pollution without it being perfectly obvious to even the dumbest GW believer, the decimation of the West’s middle class will NOT save our planet, no matter how we all wish it so.

TE – nothing will save the US middle class. Get over it. Move on.

The US consumes 25% of the world’s resources, and is only 5% of the population. That is all you need to know to tell you what the future holds.

That ratio simply cannot be maintained. It will not be maintained.

So, either 1) the world can increase its consumption five fold – which is impossible, or 2) the impoverished world’s masses will need to be happy with their lot in life so that the US can keep consume five times as much as they do (which will not happen either), or 3) the ratio will need to change from 5:1 downward. The US will maybe be able to hold a 2:1 or 3:1 ratio, for the intermediate term.

The answer of course is #3. The ratio will fall. And it will fall very substantially. And there is NO stopping it.

In honor of being the two biggest fucking THICK-HEADED ECO-TARDS on this site, I hereby (inspired by Llpoh) award The Chicken Little “The Sky is Falling!” Trophy to Alex and 3E…

Be grateful… it was that, or the Golden Dildo Award…

@Llpoh, yep, agree 100%

But why do we gift the top 0.1% more of the pie on our way down?

How is it that US Fortune 500 executives now make hundreds and hundreds of times the average wage of their workers when their workers – by and large – no longer have jobs?

Why do we destroy small business, gift their customers to the Fortune 500, allow the closure of ‘murkin jobs and then siphoning of what is left by those at the very top?

THAT is what I lament. I agree we need to rectify our consumption issues – though I do disagree with your figures, as those figures haven’t budged even as we moved 70% of production to China. BUT allowing ten guys to own 70% of the GDP while telling 95% of the country to “get used to it,” seems to be a roadmap to destruction for 100% of us.

And, I’ll stick by my original statements, taxing US, making electricity and food more expensive for US, will not help the earth one bit.

You can’t have a level field when one side gets all the breaks and the other side has to do all the paying.

All you will have is the eventuality where the “other” side (US) has no ability to pay for anything.

We’ll be cold, hungry, and sick and the planet will still be being destroyed by the former US corporate overlords.
