McCain, when a Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Navy was a Navy pilot (they call themselves aviators). July 29, 1967 while on the deck and in his plane on the carrier U.S.S. Forrestal he managed to screw up procedures (officially denied and covered up by him and the Navy and also even promoted on Wikipedia if you care to look–reason to follow). He did a smart ass punk attention getting trick by doing a “wet start” up of his jet.
When a pilot wants to be a wise ass or show off, this type of engine start creates a large startling flame and lots of surprise noise from the rear of a jet engine on start up–this was no accident. This and the large subsequent electrical surge and apparent (incorrect and against policy) weapon arming (by the pilot) caused the launching of a powerful Zuni rocket across the carrier’s deck hitting other parked planes (photo below) that were packing 1,000 high-explosive pound bombs. The subsequent massive explosions, fire and destruction went several decks below and nearly sunk this major 82,000 ton U.S. aircraft carrier.
This stunt and aftermath caused the death of 134 sailors and seriously injure (blow off arms legs, cause blindness and burns to another 161 sailors) and took the ship off the battle line for extensive repairs. Any other Navy pilot causing this type of death and destruction the Navy would have raped him and he would probably still be in the brig. Why not McCain? Well, first with many powerful connections this “little infraction” was covered up by the Navy (our most politically involved/connected service by the way).
You see his grandfather was a famous FOUR STAR Navy admiral and his dad was at the time of the incident was a powerful Navy FOUR STAR admiral and McCain graduated from the Navy Academy. So the old boy Navy tradition cover his ass network went into high gear immediately; and make no mistake, it does exist and it did for him.
He is definitely a prisoner of the new world order. Taking his orders from the rothchilds.

NO, I have the complete listing of Nixon’s presidential pardons (readily available from the Nixon Presidential Library). Neither McCain’s name nor the name of ANY POW from Vietnam is listed. Futhermore, in 1967 the DoD issued a directive that no POW would be charged for any “propaganda” statements made while a POW. Only a fellow POW could charge a POW with aiding the enemy. Jim Stockdale charged 2 fellow officers (one Marine, one Navy ) with aiding the enemy. Neither officer was John McCain. Looks like you folks can’t tell the difference between fecal matter and shoe polish. The only FACTS in this POS are the follwing: The USS Forrestal was a U.S. aircraft carrier that suffered a serious fire on 29 July, 1967. 2) John McCain was an A4E pilot on Forrestal. The Forrestal’s displacement was 59,000 tons, not 82,000 tons. Futher more, “wet starting” (properly reference is a “hot start”) is something NOT to be done since it “spikes” the ITT (inter turbine temperature) and the TOT (turbine outlet temperature). NOT a GOOD THING. It doesn’t go “bang”; it just shoots out a flame (usually bright blue). I am highly doubtful that this “wet start” could be performed on a turbine engine with a motive flow valve unless the starter did not “spin” the engine to the proper N1 speed for ignition.
Steve, you do a wet start by pulling the circuit-breakers to the igniters while your engine spins up. Meanwhile the fuel is flowing. Slap those breakers in late during the start-sequence and WHOOSH, you get a big fireball. Problem is, if you wait too long, now you could have a big fuel puddle literally dripping thru and under your engine case AND a possible fire that can’t be blown out by motoring. Did Johnny Wet-Start cause the disaster? Probably not by himself. Most accidents are a result of several factors lining up like the holes of so many slices of Swiss cheese. We had an uncommanded launch of a Zuma missile; plus deteriorated, leaking Korea-era 1000-pound bombs, used in desperation because of ordinance shortage. I believe his actions were a factor. In a 2003 interview for the national archives, he stated, “..there were flames under my aircraft. I had to climb forward over the refueling nozzle, jump, and roll thru the flames.”

Amanda, I spent 4 years onboard the carrier USS Constellation CVA-64, (May 68- Jan 72)….And, as a “Proud Sailor”, I detest, McCain.
But before I go into the reasons, let me express my concerns of this photo.
A: the fantail, not a aft design that were of the Forrestal Class.
B: look up and there seems to be a helo pad ( the circular structure)..not so….
C: Again, look at the structure encompassed in flames. That’s the superstructure, all commands are there. Not a standard shape!!
D: The fireboat; Didn’t happen! Carriers only launch and recover, at sea, not where a fireboat would be nearby. far out at sea sailing into the wind.

Yeah, that photo is NOT the Forrestal. Furthermore, even an Admiral’s son would have been sent to Leavenworth for deliberately if indirectly causing the deaths of 134 sailors. This article is highly inaccurate . The rocket was accidentally fired from an F-4 Phantom across the deck from McCains A-4 Skyhawk . It hit McCains airplane and he is lucky he escaped . Despite the fact that he could go back stateside with the rest of his crew , he volunteered instead to be transferred to the USS Oriskany to stay in the fight . Three months later he was shot down , tortured and made a POW . Because his Father and Grandfather were US Navy Flag Officers he could have gone home . He declined the offer and remained there for 5 1/2 years . He was promoted to CDR then Captain and despite his enormous injuries due to the crash and beatings by the Vietcong he returned to the air as a Naval flight instructor . Now 80 , he is in the toughest battle of his life . I wish him well as I deeply respect this man . He has faults like any other man , but he is a man , he is human .

Thr whole truth may be lost, but it is undisputable that McCain was in the Saigon Officers’ Club six hours +/- being interviewed by RW Apple of the NYTimes about the disaster. McCain, dressed in his whites, was getting his spin out to start to shape the narrative so he could keep himself out of Leavenworth.
The Forrestal still had 3 calls to abandon ship to run through yet, MCain was the only uninjured sailor removed from the Forrestal up to 24 hours after the accident: everyone else removed was either dead, ot near death.
A lot of this fire could have been averted if the sailors were fighting it correctly. Some used water and some used the correct method of using a sea foaming agent

Wanna know the REAL REASON this fire happened??
1) Breach of protocol by an Ordnanceman who removed a pin he shouldn’t have prior to an electrical test.
2) A shirt during said electrical test for a Zuni rocket caused a short that launched the missile across the deck and struck a plane a couple down from McCain.
3)The rocket caused the plane it hit to explode. That plane and others nearby were carrying WWII ordnance (bombs), whose cook off times (time until they exploded) were significantly less than the ordnance that had previously been used.
4)The lower cook off times of the weapons caused the trained fire fighting personnel to be caught off guard when the weapons exploded, killing almost all of them. When they’d picked themselves up and tried to approach again (those that survived), they were killed in a second explosion.
5) These explosions ripped holes in the deck, allowing burning fuel to fall to the decks below.
This tragedy is one reason everyone that serves on a carrier, especially those on the flight deck, undergo flight deck firefighting training. This is why we have drills on what to do. Everyone that goes through flight deck firefighting also watches “Fire on the Flight Deck”, which is about the Forrestal’s fire in 1967 off of Yankee Station. A lot of the footage for the film comes from the carrier’s platt camera footage.
And this tragedy is in the AO’s “blood manual”, because people were killed because a note/caution/warning was ignored. I was an AO. I’ve seen the video.

The top photo is fake but the second one is not. The story, although poorly written, is pretty much true. McCain did the wet start (supposedly because he was having a feud with the pilot in the aircraft behind him, but that has not been confirmed), the flames from the wet start torched off a Zuni rocket on the airplane behind him and that rocket caused the rest of the catastrophe. To keep from being lynched, McCain was quietly transferred to another carrier. The Zuni rockets were famous for having electrical problems.

As much as I dislike McCain, I believe that he was IN THE A-4 Hit by the Zuni, not the one in which a short circuit caused the inadvertent launch of the Zuni, which I believe was an F-4 on the other side of the Forrestal’s stern. I was in the Navy 1969-1973 and before we go aboard ship we were required to see the training film, ‘Trial By Fire’, which was the account of the U.S.S. Forrestal incident. You are correct, an AO was testing the aircraft holding the Zuni pod for stray voltage, not realizing his meter was defective. In addition he violated the cardinal rule of hooking all electrically fired ordinance to the aircraft… meaning not until they are on the catapult facing forward. There was stray voltage in the plane and it fired aft and hit McCain’s plane, rupturing fuel tanks and so it happened. In the actual flight deck operations film, you can see the Zuni being fired off.
Yes those Zuni’s could be fired on deck there was a switch I think it was the down up and lock which is use to test the system.

I don’t know all of the circumstances BUT my stepbrother was on the USS Forrestal when the tragedy occurred! His bunk was under the flight deck where many sailors perished and many jumped overboard. He survived but not without bad memories.

I don’t know the carrier or year but have seen the video of a accidental rocket firing from an A-7 (as I recall)that did hit aircraft on the deck resulting in multiple explosions and fire and I would imagine injuries and deaths.

First of all I was there, this story is completely bull sh– the rocket fired completely opposite to what this lying idiot says and struck the fuel tank on Mcains plane. I don’t know what the pictures are but they are not the Forrestal. The boat in the picture looks like some kind of a tug boat and there weren’t any on Yankee Station that I ever seen. I’m not much of a Mcain fan anymore either but if you can’t come up with something better than this you should just shut your lying mouth.

I agree with Ronald W. Weed, that is NOT a photograph of ANY American Carrier. Also about arming on deck, I know today there are Weight On Wheel switches that do not allow this action.
In my 14 years and many cruises, I have seen the Plat Camera Video of the incident on the Forrestal so many time it is burned into my brain.
Also as said above, see items A thru F. and reconsider before you jump Amanda. There are many of us that spent the time at sea on the carriers and will call you out every time.

From what I read about this incident, the missile was launched from an aircraft that was not piloted by McCain. So I tend to agree with you that this story is not accurate. “Connie” sailor is Correct. I was on the USS Independence CV62. Loaded tons of Zuni rocket pods on fighter aircraft. As a AO (aviation ordnanceman) during training they showed videos of this terrible mishap. Don’t follow the story on how the Zuni rocket motor was fired, we where told/instructed that stray voltage when the pod was plugged set off the rocket. As we always tested electrical connectors for stray voltage before plugging them in.

I didn’t know about it at the time. I wasn’t on a carrier as long as you, but I was on it long enough to know what you said was true.

I was in the Navy and on duty at a Hawaiian communication station FOCPAC when this story broke. The reason this stays with me for so long is that McCain’s dad was still in command when this happened. i was on cva 59. the photo you refer to looks like an oil platform.. the second photo looks like the forrestal… mccain couldn’t arm the missile…. an ordinance man did.. after the fire ,, missiles were to be armed at the catapults. stray voltage could set a missile off, so we didn’t plug them into the ter/or mer, until they were aimed at the ocean…….. pilots had to have their hands in the air so we could see them, before we went under wing and plugged the missile in , also we ran a quick voltage test to check for stray voltage… i think it took 3? volts or less to set them off.. don’t know if mccain played with the fire control switch ,, but it was red and had to be pushed forward before you could fire.. would be dumb if mccain was dicking with live ordinance on a crowded flight deck…… the forrestal was a bad luck ship… she was from norfolk va. all other carriers in viet nam were from the west coast … sending an east coast ship to viet nam , around south africa , was bad idea……. we had a mad stabber stabbing sailors in the back , in the dark, with a screwdriver,,, only a couple per month , for all the 6mos i was there, he never got caught.. also race tensions… blacks from east coast were not happy being forced to live with whites.. one white person in my division was found floating 2 weeks after being beaten and thrown overboard. i slept with a shore patrol night stick in my left hand. it was a cursed ship… at least for that cruise.. . .i was a plane pusher on the forrestal flight deck , but for my last 2 years in the navy, i was an ordinance man… and i plugged those little rockets in while on cva 14 in viet nam……… i got off the forrestal on july 20 , in the phillipines, , , the ship blew up 9 days later, almost half of the plane pushers were killed by explosions. our job was to put out fires. if you see the guys on the fire hoses,,, you see about 8 guys holding on to it ??? they were that powerful.. oh well…… i wasn’t there but they pushed at the fire with the sea water, and while pushing the fire away, the bombs blew up in their faces,,

Ronald Weed, My name is Mark Morell and I was Ltcdr McCains plane captain. What happened was after preflight and he did a thour0ugh preflight. He did more of a preflight than kicking to tires and lighting the fires. I never saw anyone do a wet start, that can cause serious engine damage.
What happened that day was I had strapped him in went thru the hand signals and applied electrical power and the huffer came up and he had a normal start. The tail of the scooter was hanging over the ocean. I pulled the pins and the ladder and unchained him. I just got to the island when a zuni narrowly missed me. It was fired from and F4 directly across from his plane. it impacted and started a fire. I ran back to help him get out, but he had already got 0ut and was helping other pilots get clear. Whatever you say about him he was a hero that day.
The bombs were WW2 vintage and the casings were cracked, rusted and leaking. It was hot like a MF and the explosives were breaking down and leaking.
Even though I am not crazy about how he is behaving these days the pictures shown here have been shown to us in the Navy before and have nothing to do with him. That carrier was known as the USS Forest Fire because it had several of them which also had nothing to do with McCain.

This not what occurred. The aircraft were static in Pre flight. The engines were seaward. An F4 cooked off a Zuni rocket due to what is believed to be a static discharge the rocket struck the A4 beside mccains. There was no wet start issue in this accident. The fire fighting techniques were poor and the Navy revamped its procedures on fire fighting after this incident and continues to use the film in training

What really happened was McCain was sitting in his skyhawk waiting to launch when a phantom had an electrical problem and launched a zuni rocket that hit McCain’s skyhawk causing a fire. McCain climbed 0ut and helped the Spad pilots and other skyhawk pilots to safety. Lt commander McCain did not start the fire and you can’t wet start a skyhawk. he had 2 1000 pound bombs and no Zunis, he did have sidewinders on the outboard racks but they didn’t go off.

Actually, the USS Forrestall we called the Forrestfire for years. The pictures are used in training films about what not to do when fighting fires and all the mistakes made by brave sailors on this ship. They did not mention in these films the name of the aviator who started the whole thing. Not once. My guess the Navy covered up for their aviator hero. Spent two years on USS Constellation. The flight deck is a very very dangerous place to be.

Personal account of the USS Forrestal fire, July 29, 1967
“I was the pilot of an A-4E Skyhawk on the port side aft. As I started my engine, I heard a ‘whoosh’ and I saw a low-order explosion in front of me. I didn’t see what the primary cause was since I had my head down in the cockpit, turning on various electronics equipment. I looked up immediately and saw the two A-4s in front of the plane engulfed in flames and JP-5 fluid spreading pools in front of the aircraft. I saw a 1,000-pound bomb roll off the aircraft and roll about six feet back toward the middle of the flight deck and the bomb was resting in the pool of the burning JP-5 fluid. The flames were spreading rapidly moving with the wind on the deck. I began making preparations to exit the aircraft. I shut down the engine and at the time I had the impression that a 20mm cannon shell had exploded in the aircraft. I don’t think this was the case, however. I saw one man covered with flames blowing toward the center of the flight deck from the edge of the planes and I watched him making efforts to beat out the flames on his body. Two men rushed out on my right from the starboard side of the flight deck. Two boys from VA-106 and another yellow jersey came from the forward end of the ship and the three men began to drag the man from the vicinity of the fire and take his clothes off and put the firs tout. The fire was increasing in intensity and spreading as the wind blew the fuel aft and in a few moments a large fireball erupted in the vicinity of the 1,000-pound bomb and engulfed my aircraft! I exited the aircraft over the starboard side and proceeded under the tail of the two A-4s on my right on the fantail and went forward on the flight deck just in front of a line of Phantoms (F-4Bs) that were spotted along the starboard side.
“I saw two of the pilots to my left, while I was still in my plane, still in theirs. One had his canopy closed and the other one, I’m not sure. I went about one or two hundred feet when a very large blast knocked me up against the side of the fighter on my right. I regained my feet and continued on my way past number four elevator and was going around a Vigilante (RA-5C) when another explosion knocked me to my knees. I got up and continued forward and went around the aft of the island. When I observed the first explosion, I saw two men who were running aft with fire hoses taking the full blast. I believe they were killed instantly. After reaching the relative safety of the starboard side of the island, I observed a very badly burned man being helped by another injured man. I helped take the badly burned man down to the first deck. Two other men then took the burned man forward to sick bay and I reported to the ready room.”

It is obvious that you and most everyone else posting on this site haven’t a clue about flightdeck operations, naval aviation or this event or it’s cause.
All operations on the roof are videotaped for possible later review. They are public record. The video clearly shows that the zuni rocket came off of an F-4B Phantom which was parked further foward on the flight deck. An AO (Aviation Ordinanceman) had been working on attaching the electrical pigtails to said missle. He was killed when the missle flight motor ignited from static electricity.
The zuni rocket flew the legth of the flightdeck striking McCan’s A-4 Skyhawk, which was parked, as well as with several other aircraft, with the tail pointed out over the edge of the flighdeck.
I happen to hate McCain with a passion, but even if you could do a “wet start” in an A-4, the aircraft has interlocks that must be satisfied before fuel can flow into the combustion cans, the tail was pointed out over the South China Sea and not on an aircraft beside him, as this sea story of an article suggests.
Additionally, it is McCain’s bird that explodes first, not a fellow pilots.

Corsairs and Phantoms flew off the same deck. I was on the Saratoga CVA-60. Don’t know of any other ship carrying planes then to be shown on the deck as pictured. We had Helos, and the radar planes along with Intruders. It could be a very busy deck if they were all to take off. Intruders needed very little wind over the deck to be launched, we launched two at Anchor. Looks like and Aircraft Carrier deck to me. What’s your beef?
This is not FAKE NEWS! I was in Navy Aviation from 69′-73′ and made 3 Westpac cruises aboard the Forrestal. It is common knowledge among the Navy Aviation community that McCain did wet-start his A-4 Skyhawk and put in motion the series of events that killed and wounded all of those sailors. The following day, McCain was transferred to the Oriskany and the following week the was shot down. That’s how karma is supposed to work.

Well, the photo’s wrong, but the event was quite real, and yes, McCain’s daddy was the Admiral. I remember reading about this in Reader’s Digest back in the 1960’s. He did sort of redeem himself later when a POW and refused special treatment due to his family connections, choosing to endure the Hanoi Hilton with his fellow POW’s.
I was in the Navy and received electronic systems that were blackened by this fire, it was a terrible event for sailors. I investigated and for sure McCain was shipped out immediately; the missiles came from his area (A4’s getting ready for flight); and by rumor he was doing the wet start garbage that started the events. Also his dad and granddad were the Navy big cheeses at the time. I may be biased, I have never like McCain for this reason so my judgement is slanted, I wish they could have done a better investigation but his dad was in charge.
The story I read said the zuni rocket was cooked off by the exhaust of a turbine powered NC-2. There is a flight deck video tape of it. Mc Cain was an LT when he was shot down. I’m not a big fan of Mc Cain but there seem to be a lot of holes in this story.

Both my parents were Naval Officers and they knew of McCain well. It isn’t slander if it’s true.
Number 1, the photo you lead with is not Forrestal, hell it’s not even an aircraft carrier. There was no wet start. Zuni rocket pods are connected to the aircraft electrical system AFTER start and AFTER an electrical circuit test. The Pilot cannot arm weapons on deck. On Naval aircraft when the tail hook is down the guns are safed automatically, when the landing gear is down ALL ordnance is safed automatically. That safety procedure cannot be overridden by the pilot, but it can by the ground crew. Apparently the electrical test was not, or was improperly, performed. The aircraft had “stray voltage” and when the rocket pod was plugged in the rocket fired. NO FAULT OF MCCAIN. I think I know what I’m talking about. I have personally talked to the Flight instructor’s son in law about his “experience” in flight school, and someone should look up his scores there, starting at the bottom of the list, and not going any further up than the last name. As for the story in the article I personnaly talked with a Forrestal sailor who was on board the ship that fateful day, and he said the same as the story line that was posted here. I also state the picture is NOT of the incident that day as no Tugs were in the middle of the Tonkin Gulf, but the destroyer I was on and our sister ship were both right there fighting that fire… They were listing between 20 and 22 degrees by the time we got to them, and there was a great deal of worry that unless the fires were put out, that the Forrestal would sink; that God it didn’t, and the people of that ship deserve the credit for saving that ship, yet none were ever awarded at least the Meritorious Unit Commendation Ribbon like the sailors of both destroyers were…? As for McCain he needs to be removed from America and “Hanoi John” needs to be relocated back in Vietnam, in the least

His only action was escaping an aircraft that was about to explode. He caused no confusion on the flight deck. He was in no way at fault for anything that happened that day. The only confusion was when the flight deck fire crews were wiped out due to the 500 lb and 1,000 lb bombs exploding from the intense heat. This was a major tragedy but it changed the way ships crews were trained in the future.

I was there when this happened. McCain was in an A-4 Attack plane. It only carried bombs not rockets. He was on the port side of the ship. The 5 inch Zuni rocket was fired from an F-4 fighter plane on the starboard side of the ship. The fired rocket hit the belly tank on McCain’s airplane and ignited the jet fuel in the tank. He in no way started the fire or contributed to it. The author of the article obviously has an axe to grind against McCain. Read the book Sailors to the End by Gregory Freeman and you will learn the truth.

I watched the declassified video of this on deck event, while at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard in 1980. I cannot read McCain’s mind as to what he was thinking at the time, but this article describes those events just as I saw them in that video, a United States Navy Training Publication for a Damage Control Class!! Shortly after this disaster, McCain crashed his aircraft and became a war prisoner. A War Hero would have returned to safety with his aircraft to fight another day saving American lives and killing the enemy as directed. McCain went on to use his so-called War Hero status to enter politics and make a name for himself in the U S Senate as he collected a horrible voting record and the tag “RINO” on a year over year basis. The article is true. My fiance was on the USS Hancock (CVA19) and they were turned around in Subic Bay The Philippines, to return to the line to replace the USS Forrestal. McCain is also solely responsible for the broken limbs he suffered when he bailed out because he did not follow proper procedures. He is a loser, a traitor, and not worth of respect.

McCain, when a Lieutenant Commander in the U.S. Navy was a Navy pilot (they call themselves aviators). July 29, 1967 while on the deck and in his plane on the carrier U.S.S. Forrestal he managed to screw up procedures (officially denied and covered up by him and the Navy and also even promoted on Wikipedia if you care to look–reason to follow). He did a smart ass punk attention getting trick by doing a “wet start” up of his jet.
When a pilot wants to be a wise ass or show off, this type of engine start creates a large startling flame and lots of surprise noise from the rear of a jet engine on start up–this was no accident. This and the large subsequent electrical surge and apparent (incorrect and against policy) weapon arming (by the pilot) caused the launching of a powerful Zuni rocket across the carrier’s deck hitting other parked planes (photo below) that were packing 1,000 high-explosive pound bombs. The subsequent massive explosions, fire and destruction went several decks below and nearly sunk this major 82,000 ton U.S. aircraft carrier.
This stunt and aftermath caused the deathof 134 sailors and seriously injure (blow off arms legs, cause blindness and burns to another 161 sailors) and took the ship off the battle line for extensive repairs. Any other Navy pilot causing this type of death and destruction the Navy would have raped him and he would probably still be in the brig. Why not McCain? Well, first with many powerful connections this “little infraction” was covered up by the Navy (our most politically involved/connected service by the way).
You see his grandfather was a famous FOUR STAR Navy admiral and his dad was at the time of the incident was a powerful Navy FOUR STAR admiral and McCain graduated from the Navy Academy. Ever hear of a “weight on wheel” switch? Ordinance can’t be armed sitting on the deck. Wet starts are not a cool thing pilots do because they cause damage to the engine and down an aircraft. They sure don’t cause an electrical surge since the engine has to be up to speed before the generator will come online.
I wonder how many Navy pilots died or became POW’s because of him as well as all of the POW / MIA’s after the war because he stood in the way of any investigations of POW sightings in Vietnam.

I wasn’t aware of the above story until now and the thought came to mind that had McCain done this on the aircraft carrier on which my dad served, I very well might not be here today. This makes Trump’s recent declaration about McCain all the more poignant.

One thing that is absolutely undeniable is his shameful treatment of POW/MIA family members once he was in the senate. You have no proof that he was tortured. The injuries that he came home with were broken limbs, but they were caused by ejecting at fighter jet speed, without following his training instructions of keeping his arms and legs tight against his body, so the limbs wouldn’t be injured by hitting parts of the cockpit on the way out of the roof, after the bubble was blown off. Those ejection seats were basically rocket powered, and they got the pilot out quickly, as designed, but they caused a very violent escape from the aircraft. Many injuries of the pilot’s extremities happened during ejections, causing multiple broken and fractured arms and legs. Those injuries that McCain suffered came during his high speed ejection. There’s no evidence of him being tortured. Especially, once he provided any information that his captors asked for.

That said there is film of him climbing out of his A-4 and hopping down to the flight deck from the refueling probe on the nose of the aircraft. The A-4 is a small airplane and the distance from the probe to the carrier deck is only about 5 feet. I mention this because as others on the flight deck desperately tried to put the fires out and push the bomb laden aircraft over the side McCain made his way to the ships sick bay where he was also photographed laying comfortably in a hospital bed ( which you could imagine were in short supply from the carnage taking place on the flight and hanger decks). What McCain’s injuries were I don’t know. He may have sprained his ankle hopping down from his aircraft of even received some superficial burns ( he doesn’t appear to have suffered any severe disfiguring burns) but in an all hands on deck emergency to show up in sick bay with minor injuries is certainly not my idea of a hero thought it seems to meet John Kerry’s less restrictive conditions for a purple heart or silver star!

McCain volunteered for Vietnam and was assigned to an A-4 bomber squadron on the USS Forrestal. He was soon to be 31 years old and held the rank of lieutenant commander, equal to that of army major. On the morning of July 29, 1967, McCain was sitting in the cockpit of his Skyhawk waiting to be launched by the ship’s catapult. Another plane accidentally set off a Zuni missile that hit the fuel tank of McCain’s A-4, touching off a fire that spread rapidly across the ship. McCain managed to escape injury, but 134 sailors died and many others were badly burned.
It was the worst U.S. Navy accident since World War Two and the fourth serious accident McCain had been involved in since becoming a pilot. The basic problem with this article is it is contradicted by facts.
First- there is clear evidence- the flight deck was filmed- that the fire was caused by a Zuni rocket being fired from an F-4 John McCain was in an A-4 on the other side of the ship.
Next I have seen the claim made that the F-4 was behind John McCain- which was not the case McCain’s A-4’s tail was pointed towards the ocean the only way an F-4 was behind him would be if it was in flight but the video shows the F-4 was parked on the deck.
If you want to be critical of John McCain go after his congressional record, desire to start wars and things he actually did.

1) McCain was in an A-4 Skyhawk, which DOES NOT have a afterburner. Therefore, he cannot have done a “Wet Start”, much less cook off the rocket with it. In fact, the only aircraft on the ship that had A/Bs were F-4 Phantom IIs, the tails of which were pointed over the starboard edge of the flight deck.
2) In fact, the accident was caused by a number of factors:
A) It was in part a malfunction of the ammunition’s safeties that sparked the disaster. The ammunition in question, was a Zuni missile on the aftmost of the F-4s.
B) It was also in part due to a wartime deciscion by Commanding officers to permit deck crew to connect the firing circuits to the armaments during preflight to prevent potentially fatal delays in launch and recovery ops.
C) A power surge when the pilot of said Phantom switched from the “Start-cart” to the onboard systems that triggered one of the missiles.
3) The missile ruptured and ignited the fuel tank of the Skyhawk NEXT TO McCain. This cooked off an aging, defective bomb that killed and/or incapacitated the flightdeck’s fire crew (including the chief who died when he recognized the risk and attempted to save his men) following this, the untrained crew tried to put out the fire using a combination of retardant foam and water. The water, however only served to spread the fire due to the difference in density between hydrocarbons (Fuel, oil, natural gas, etc.) and water.
It was, in fact, a failure of Naval Command that caused the accident, not John McCain.

Today is my brothers’ birthday…he died two years ago. He was the catapult officer on duty standing by John McCain’s aircraft when the explosion occurred. While he did not like McCain, having been in flight training with him, he never said anything about McCain starting the fire. All he talked about was the lose of lives and the super heroics of those who were on the deck. He did say that McCain lost no time in having his father take him off the Forrestal.

I’ve personally seen an F/A-18C drop tank fall from the port wing station after there as an explosion on the starboard side of the aircraft. There was no pilot in the cockpit.

First things first. I do NOT like John McCain. He was an asshole in the Navy and he’s an asshole now. That being said, this story is bogus. The truth of the matter is that on occasion things made by man fail. In order for McCain to fire that Zuni rocket he would’ve had to select Master Armament ON, Select Rockets, Select Single, select the station that the rocket pod was mounted on (either 1 or 3), have an Aviation Ordnance go into the wheel well and hit a bypass switch, than McCain would have had to push the firing switch. You cannot fire a rocket on the deck accidently. When the landing gear is down the armament system is safed.
That being said, prior to connecting a rocket pod to an aircraft, an Aviation Ordnanceman must run a stray voltage test with a meter to ensure that there the electrical circuit to the rocket pod is NOT energized. It is, as yet, unclear whether this took place. The rocket was fired by stray voltage which is, in fact, a mechanical failure of the aircraft system and the pilot has absolutely nothing to do with it.
At the time of this incident I was an Aviation Ordnanceman Second Class stationed at NAS Lemoore, CA and was an instructor on the Armament Systems of the A-4C and A-4E aircraft.

McCain crashed 5 jets, plus was responsible for the Forrestal fire. Something made the plane behind McCain fire a rocket, which hit McCain’s external center fuel tank, and caused a fire. McCain panicked, and dropped two bombs into the fire.
Surviving crewmen of the USS Forestal and those who investigated the Forrestal fire case reported that McCain deliberately ‘wet-started’ his A-4E Skyhawk to shake up the guy in the F-4 Phantom behind his plane.
‘Wet-starts’, done either deliberately (the starter motor switch allowed kerosene to pool in the engine and give a wet start) or accidentally, shoot a large flame from the tail of the aircraft.’Wet starting’ was a common practice among young ‘hot-dog’ pilots.
In McCain’s case, the ‘wet-start”cooked off’ and launched the M34 Zuni rocket from the rear F-4 that punctured the Skyhawk’s fueltank, knocked the M-65 1000 lb bomb off it’s 500 lb rated mount, and touched off the explosions and massive fire.
When the carrier Oriskany came along side, and McCain was put in a chopper and whisked away. McCain was the only Forrestal crewman to be immediately transferred .I have a hunch McCain left for his own safety, because the crew wanted blood.
I read somewhere that McCains wife waited for him while he was a POW, then she got cancer and he dumped her. Sounds about right.

The “pilot”, Lt Col Arthur “Bud” Holland – who shouldn’t have been “piloting” anything more than a dime store kite – was dangerous to the point people refused to fly with him. A friend of mine stationed at Fairchild quit the Air Force because of Holland and the Bomb Wing refusal to do anything about another pilot; a very, very dangerous pilot. In that vein, Lt. Col. Mark McGeehan, the 325th Bomb Squadron Commander, refused to allow any of his squadron crew members to fly with Holland unless he (McGeehan) was also on the aircraft. “Higher ups” – translation; “pilots” – rarely, very rarely will ground another pilot. After all, who runs the Air Force? Duh! Regardless the service, pilots will cover for pilots no matter how bad. As was the case of hanoi john so it was with Lt. Col. Holland. Here is a great link showing just how dangerous Holland was. Take particular notice of the low level high speed pass that jackass made and note his altitude: 30 feet. Despite live verifiable sightings, all further investigations were cut off. So much for never leaving anyone behind. It is FACT that only HALF of the POWs in Vietnamese camps were returned. The other half were to be used as “bargaining chips” and would be released once “reparations” were forthcoming. Reparations never came, our POWs fates were sealed.

I served aboard CVA-31. The way I heard the Forestal story was different. I read that McCain was in the plane that was hit by a missile that was accidentally fired from another plane. I was also told that he was then assigned shore duty but refused because he wanted to continue flying. He was then sent to the Oriskany.

It is impossible to fire missiles on the ground with the “weight on wheels” switch operating. You must be in the air to fire either guns, missiles or drop bombs. The pilot CANNOT override this switch. Must be done by the ground crew and that would not happen with the jet running.
This article is a tissue paper of lies. McCain did not cause this fire. My father, a decorated Naval combat pilot had flown over from the USS Oriskany the day this fire started. His retelling of how this fire started does not align with this article. One of the primary reasons for the magnitude of this fire was AN-M65A1 bombs, many dating back to the 1950’s, that exploded during the fire. The ordinance crews on the Forrestal wanted this ordinance removed from the ship. They were concerned that the bombs might detonate during the catapult launch. The author and his supporters dishonor the members of the Forrestal crew who died during the ensuing fire by repeating and spreading this pack of lies.
How does questioning how the fire started dishonor those who died trying to put it out in order to save their ship?

There are pictures of McCain clamoring out of his A-4 and jumping down from the nose of the aircraft that day. He was mobile and not seriously hurt yet, while other men on deck rushed to fight the fires and dump ordinance and aircraft over the side, McCain was next photographed lounging in sick bay with only minor burns. A sick bay that desperately needed space for far more seriously injured sailors.

There are a lot of REALLY stupid people on this blog. Half of you thing the photo at the top is for the article, and a shitload of you idiots don’t get that there was no one behind McCain’s aircraft, because the tail was facing the water. Many of you don’t understand how pilots are not treated like enlisted men, are trained at great expense, and considered valuable assets, and you don’t even understand that, as the son, and grandson, of two high ranking officers, McCain would receive special treatment, not only by his superiors but by the people lower in rank as well. The fast that ANY of you would believe this story is accurate just shows how stupid people can be. There is video proving McCain could not have blasted anyone with his exhaust. That alone tells you this story can’t be trusted. Then there are those of you who don’t understand that, in the confusion of events, it would be easy to make mistakes, like thinking a missile hit your plane when it may have hit the one next to you. McCain would not be expected to stay and be blown up, he would be expected to get his valuable ass to safety. OMG I was on the Forrestfire in 76/77 and we had to watch the film of it burning but they never identified the idiot who started it.
Much has been made of the pictures on this post, however I do not seem to find any reference to the pictures in the text of the post itself. In other words, the author did not claim that these photos were of the actual event. My guess is that they are there for illustration purposes only. At any rate, the use of these pictures does not change the facts presented in the article. Oh, and by the way, can we stop the ad hominems. They only make you look crude and unable to express an argument.
I lost an uncle (that I was too young to remember) in this disaster 50 years ago. My Dad (also a Navy man, served on BB-62 USS New Jersey in the 40s) has never discussed this event with me for my entire life. As amazing as it sounds, I only learned yesterday that John McCain was on the Forrestal and was (one way or another) intimately involved in this event.
I also just watched the Navy training video from 1973 “Trial by Fire” for the first time yesterday because I’d simply like to know why my uncle had to die that day. I’ve read where others say you can see the Zuni rocket fire across the flight deck, and I assume they are talking about this video. I watched the “initial events” frame-by-frame. What my untrained eye sees is a DOCTORED film account of the events that started the disaster. Video link:

I realize this is billed as “a motivational film for Navy personnel on the prevention of fire and for learning firefighting damage control measures” and not necessarily a complete, historically-accurate video account of events that day. However, the narrator (at 3:15) specifically says, “Using that visual record, let’s go back now to July 29th, 1967.” To me, that implies that this video is supposed to have captured the events of that specific day.
With that said, at 03:23, this looks like a spliced-in, staged shot of an F-4 fully tied-down with the nose facing the water that supposedly fires the Zuni rocket that started it all.
Then at 03:25, the video returns to the planes in take-off position and rapidly pans across the flight deck to capture the A-4 already in flames. So I conclude that this particular Navy video does NOT show the actual triggering event of that day.
Does anyone know if and where footage exists that captures the real Zuni rocket firing and hitting the A-4? I’d like to see it with my own eyes.
