Question of the Day, August 28

Do you really believe Stucky is German?  Stucky is funny.  Germans are not funny.  Can you name a single German comedian?  I thought not. (Austrians=Germans).

I don’t have any reason to suspect that Stucky is lying, although on the internet, anything is possible.

A quick google search reveals the following:

Stuck, any of these names ring a bell? Where’s Billy? I’m sure by Billy’s reckoning, German comedy stands apart from the rest of the world’s comedy. But, the first image that comes up is this:

meh. Doesn’t look too funny, to me.

Obviously, this is a very funny bit in German:

Wolfgang Puck is Austrian and he is a lot like Stucky, witty and uninhibited. They both throw zingers about sex and the female anatomy. I believe he is German but what do I know? Boobies are fair game around the world, which limits the Asians. I’m pretty sure Stucky is not Asian.

Makes no difference to me what heritage of a person – it is what you do, not what you say; although you can get a rough idea on the verbal interchange.

False premise Zara. Stucky is not German, as even you recognize, he claims to be Austrian. While Austrians are widely called “the perfect Germans” they are something different. They get to laugh, and make tolerable handguns at tolerable prices, and build some crazy 4x4s, and last I checked were not in NATO.

I am part German (but not Austrian) which is why I can take this blunt, literal and humorless approach.

Nope. Not a one.

Of course, Zara is just having fun / being funny.

For me not to be Austrian would require me to tell the lie for many years on end. Not even George Costanza could do that.

I’m a gonna generalize here. Germans love to laugh just as much as Americans. I can hardly recall any party or get together (picnics, concerts, etc etc) where there wasn’t much laughter and merriment.

BUT, it’s different in a way that’s difficult to express. It’s not often the boisterous HARDY HAR HAR!!! that we Americans are known for. It’s more subdued, more measured… a time and a place for everything. One “complaint” my parents had, and my uncle observed it also when he visited was — “Why do Americans laugh at everything?”. That drove them crazy. I guess what I’m saying is German humor isn’t as spontaneous as American humor … again, a generalization.

Also, all humor is closely linked to language … think of Carlin and Robin Williams. And it’s even more true for German. German is full of often unintentional humor due to linguistic ambiguity … and the crazy way in which new words can be built and constructed …. loooong words. Of course, just as some of Carlin’s jokes would translate very poorly into German, the opposite is also true, even more so. For example, this sign;

Translation: ““This area is under video surveillance by the police to prevent crimes.” Not very funny. However, German syntax also allows for the following interpretation; “This area is under video surveillance to prevent crimes COMMITTED BY THE POLICE”. haha, much funnier … although jokes aren’t funny when they have to be explained.

Anyway, the reason I might be funny from time to time is because I was only born in Austria, but RAISED in Amurica, hell yeah!!

Hey some of the younger ones are pretty darn funny. This TV show invented the whole Greek Finance minister giving the Germans the finger, just to see the German public’s reaction…..If you know German the timing and the wording is very funny….

…we started two world wars and almost own them both….

This video is great too. It was made before the “finger fiasco”….

Zara, blow me.

Adolph Hitler speeches had the kind of subject matter and delivery that Germans love; he got a lot of laughs until the battle of Moscow in December 1941 when the Russians got the last laugh. It wasn’t funny when Napoleon played that same schtick in 1812. .

I thought Stucky was ‘Murican…….Fuck yeah!

“My ancestors are from Alsace Lorraine.”
—-Zara

Alsace Lorraine has been a geographical football between France and Germany since Charlemagne’s time. No wonder you’re a confused little critter. Heh.
