Rise of the Alpha Return of the Tribe

They say that Lysander the Spartan, whom I have mentioned before, used to remark that Sparta was the most dignified home for old age; for that nowhere was more respect paid to years, nowhere was old age held in higher honour. Nay, the story is told of how when a man of advanced years came into the theatre at Athens when the games were going on, no place was given him anywhere in that large assembly by his own countrymen; but when he came near the Lacedæmonians, who as ambassadors had a fixed place assigned to them, they rose as one man out of respect for him, and gave the veteran a seat. When they were greeted with rounds of applause from the whole audience, one of them remarked: “The Athenians know what is right, but will not do it.” – Cicero

Are you an Athenian or a Spartan? Choose.

“Sat srī akāl”. I said as I reached out and took the hand of the Sikh elder standing in front of me. His partner, a large looking Indian in a turban and beard stood next to him quietly watching us interact.

We chatted for a bit more and then moved towards my office. His companion followed quietly as we spoke. “How are your children?” he asked me as we settled in the area outside my office door.

“They’re well Harjit, thank you. How is business?” I replied. Harjit is an older man and an established entrepreneur in the region. He owns a number of businesses and is well known not just amongst his own people but to the rest of the city as well. He is a leader in his community and the head of a large family. He frequents our business only once or twice a year but the rest of his clan, which is extensive, are here regularly.

“Business is good Francis. I see new faces here. Things must be well for you too?” he asked.

“They are steady, thank you.” I replied. This is a good, neutral answer. Sikhs, like many others, love to negotiate. If things are going too swimmingly they expect more of me. If things are simply steady they will not press as hard. They want me to do well and be successful but will always push for more if they think I can afford it. Coming to middle ground has not always been easy because we are from different tribes but we are both business men and alphas so there is honour and respect between us and as such doing business together has become easier with time. It is a good and honourable relationship that I have come to value and appreciate.

“Francis, this is my cousin’s son, Raj.” I shook the big man’s hand. I guessed he was about twenty five to thirty years old or so and about 6’4″ tall. “He needs your help with a few things. I trust you will take care of him.”

“Of course.” I replied.

Over the years I have lost track of how many of Harjit’s friends and family have become my clients. One of my favourite customers was one of his nephews. When he walked through my door for the first time he could not have been much older than nineteen or twenty. He introduced himself to me and told me who his uncle was. He followed it up with: “If you could give me a bit of a deal I’d appreciate it. My uncle says I’m not allowed to go anywhere else.” I laughed and took care of him as was expected. Their honour and mine demanded no less.

As the fourth turning progresses and our nation states further deteriorate I believe that men such as Harjit will find themselves cast in an ever evolving roll in regions such as ours. Whether they realize it or not as political borders falter, whether due to economics or social instability, those with the strongest bonds in terms of clan and tribe are the most likely to weather the coming storm. Those at the head of these clans and tribes will emerge as new political leaders, the old guard having been cast aside as the result of fall out in a sociopolitical environment turned upside down.

The importance of the clan in the Sikh’s success in our region cannot be overstated. They have done well in their new environment because they rely on one another. In a sense they are all family, much in the same way my community was as a child growing up in the mid west. They take care of one another through business and community and they do not compromise their identity or deny the natural order of the world.

Unlike too many of their ‘European’ counterparts they do not suffer foolishness. From my observations the beta male is rare in their culture. They pay him and his corresponding social structures and philosophy little mind. For the Sikh weakness is not a virtue and they do not confuse it with mercy. It was not that long ago that our culture did the same.

Indeed, our nations and our culture are failing because marxism, the battle standard of the beta and what I call ‘vile alpha’, has been allowed to creep into every aspect of our lives unchecked and unchallenged. It is a trend which, with regards to our political states, I believe no man can reverse. As such we have arrived at a cross roads in our political and social structure with the trend towards tribalism accelerating. In his excellent essay on this subject entitled “Tribes“, Robert Gore writes: “Resurgent tribalism represents a huge step backwards and comes at the expense of the smallest tribe: the individual.”

In a sense this is true. But at this stage I believe it is a trend that cannot be reversed. Moreover, it is a trend that does not necessarily carry negative consequences.

Tribalism is a natural human defense against a deteriorating sociopolitical environment. If the nation is unstable or the tribes within it begin to feel attacked or threatened then they tend to withdraw and form enclaves. Originally, the purpose of the state in western societies was to protect the individual through contract and law. But that has changed. Today, in the eyes of the state, the individual is now the enemy, his rights little more than a quaint myth, a distant memory and an object of scorn to be gotten around.

Additionally, the state now pits one tribe against another. Election cycles are now little more than opportunities for each tribe to seize more power, thus hastening the deterioration of state neutrality in a self fulfilling prophecy of political degradation. People respond to these actions by “tribing up” even more. “Tribing up” is a natural social defense mechanism intended to protect groups of individuals who bare similar cultural characteristics from attacks by other tribes or the very state that was originally intended to protect them in the first place. It is by and large an automatic response similar to ducking that is ignored at the tribes peril.

Mr. Gore continues:  “A manifestation of reciprocal individual responsibilities—mutually enforceable promises between equals—did not become the foundation of contract law until the nineteenth century.”

This is also true. From the ancient Greeks to modern America the idea of the individual as sovereign has evolved and grown from an inkling of a seed to a grand old oak. It has been carried forward from each corner and generation of our civilization to the next over a period of millennia. But there is a catch. As Dutch politician, Geert Wilders recently lamented, freedom sometimes requires that we actually defend it. In this duty we have failed and in doing so we have allowed marxist rot to enter the root system of our tree. As a result the entire organism is now in danger of being destroyed. As such, the critters that dwell within are jumping ship and forming tribes.

unknown-1

In light of this I find myself wondering; what has happened to our virtuous alphas, the stewards of this tree of liberty? Where are our leaders?

They are here of course. They are busy raising families, building businesses and going to work every day. But that is no longer sufficient in this turning. It is time for our alphas to step up and reclaim their places in OUR tribes. Not because other tribes like the Sikhs are a threat but because it is the natural and right thing to do and because virtuous alpha males are the last line of defense that classic liberalism has against the machinations and poison of marxism and its beta henchmen. If your clan and your way of life matters to you, and it should, then it is time to rethink their importance not just to you but to the future of your people and the thousands of years of intellectual thought and growth that they and our societies represent.

To be clear, concern for your tribe does not equal a disdain or hate of others. If it did then my Sikh customers would do business elsewhere. Tribalism is not to be feared because it does not exist in a vacuum. Different tribes can (and do) coexist in close proximity but only if strong, moral alphas are prepared to take the reigns as leaders and diplomats. As the dust settles and our corporate/marxist super state and it’s mandates are left to the dustbins of history those tribes will find common ground. But only so long as they are left to their own devices and only so long as there are good, honorable and strong men to shine the light. The irony being, that in order to save classic liberalism and individual liberty we must let the states that were originally born to carry them into the future, fail. Although the body will perish, the spirit can and will survive through the clan and its natural extension – the tribe. It must, if for no other reason than the western nation state is poisoned and beyond repair.

In the end the marxist’s philosophy of economic, cultural and moral relativism is dying and taking our countries with it. The contradictions, the corruption and the debt that they have created are too deep to be rooted out. Mathematically and socially speaking this experiment in empire and socialism cannot go on forever, nor will it. Thus, in a twist of ironic fate, the tribe must be reborn to save the individual. The clan and the tribe, being the foundation of the nation, must be rebuilt. If they are then the philosophy of freedom that our ancestors have fashioned for us over thousands of years of intellectual and physical trials, tribulations and growth will be preserved through this unfortunate but inevitable turning.

So rebuild your clans and tribal leaders will arise. Choose wisdom over strength and strength over weakness. Remember mercy. Embrace virtue. Reject relativism. Preserve your intellectual and social roots and make no apologies for any of it. Like the Lacedaemonians visiting in ancient Athens, speak the truth and do the right thing.

The clock is ticking.

Francis,
An excellent essay, and I think your take on the future is essentially correct. My basic premise is that collapse will happen because it must, but afterwards smaller enclaves will emerge that will give at least some of us a chance to regain and reinstate lost liberty. Those enclaves, as you point out, will probably be tribal in nature, their selection processeses based in part on intra-group affinity. It seems only natural that such affinity will be most likely among members of the same racial and ethnic composition, but I would also submit that enclaves, to be successful, will also require ideological affinity based on love of liberty and respect for individual rights. It will be more important to include or exclude based on the latter than the former.

Francis,
You provided a different perspective on some quotes from my article. I certainly didn’t think you were attacking me, and I liked your perspective. Much to my dismay, I’ve missed some TBP humor and sarcasm, but I don’t think anyone here has attacked me personally. I don’t mind at all when people go after my writing; I try to stir up controversy. When people respond that’s part of the game and I like the give and take. Great article and keep up the good work.

This nation is too divided ideologically, morally, and emotionally to continue as one united body politic. Like the old and murderous USSR, it will break up into a series of independent republics, though still with more or less free passage, commerce, and trade between the new republics. All existing federal law will be suspended and cease to have any force or effect within the new territories.
The new republics likely would prefer to continue to use the old federal currency, though some might prefer to print their own, which would be no more worthless than the present federal fiat money. The only sufferers from this new arrangement would be the hordes of suddenly unemployed federal “workers” (presently the highest paid people in our nation), who suddenly find themselves having to find real employment at real market-determined wages. TS for them.

So, you think that ANYONE who works for the Federal government doesn’t actually do any real work? Does that include someone like myself, a blue-collar aircraft mechanic for the US Air Force? I do the exact same job I did while in uniform. The rules of our modern military are “up or out”, and there are relatively few positions at the top of the enlisted ranks. Skill at your job and taking care of your troops doesn’t get you one of those top slots, either; “unit politics” is most often the determining factor. My hands are often stained with oil, grease, and dirt. It’s hot in the summer, cold in the winter, there is no climate control on the flightline, nothing blocks the wind. And a lot of our aircraft are OLD, they break a lot, and they don’t troubleshoot or fix themselves. Yeah, we make fun of lazy office workers in DC, too. But not everyone working for the Feds sits at a desk, shuffling papers and generating zero value, I guarantee it.

No, EVERYONE who works for the federal government isn’t someone who contributes nothing and gets paid too much. But about half of them certainly are. They give those in the other half a bad image.

It has been apparent to me for some time, that the US would suffer the fate of the former USSR, and I believe that while Trump may delay the implosion, the debt is too high to continue all the payments the government makes, including both welfare and pensions.
The entitlement class that currently exists will revolt once their payments either end or become worthless as a result of hyperinflation. Think BLM protests only thousands of times worse, and bankrupt governments won’t even be able to pay their police, fire or military.
Federal power and authority will eviscerate and even some states will splinter in some states the city class and the country class regions will separate. It won’t be red state or blue state, more likely red county and blue county.
The breakup will, like the former soviet union or Yugoslavia, come quickly and while some remnant claiming to be the US may remain, the continental country of the USA will be no more.
In ten or fifteen years, the American continent may come to resemble Germany or Italy during the period of the city state.

A Trump presidency may put it off for a while, simply because a better business climate would allow them to pretend and extend, but a Clinton presidency, with its Marxist philosophy, and pay for play reality would destroy the economy and would quickly result in the US going full Venezuela

Well put Warren. In 2010 I was in Germany receiving cancer treatment (which was successful). One day I found myself sitting at a table in the dining room of that small clinic among some eight other people. Everyone spoke English (as English is the international language) but no one else at that table was an American. At some point I was asked about the U.S. and how things were there. I shocked them all when I told them that the U.S. was more divided then (2010) than it was in 1860 and that I predicted that it would not survive in its present form past 2025. Nothing has happened since 2010 to cause me to change my mind on this issue.

Actually, it is a President Trump who may end up being our Gorbachev, a transitional figure. Gorbachev was tasked with the impossible challenge of saving Soviet socialism. As predicted by Ludwig von Mises, socialist central planning of all sorts must fail because, in addition to destroying individual initiative and promoting dependence on the state, the state’s planners literally don’t and can’t know what they are doing. They lack freely fluctuating prices to rationally allocate resources to competing uses and they also lack profit and loss signals to tell them whether they are creating or destroying value. The result is an unstable, grotesquely deformed economy of malinvestment held together by force and fear. Gorbachev tinkered with reforms to lighten the weight of the state’s boot on its subjects’ necks. The result was a collapse of the Soviet empire along with its rickety socialist economy.

The US economy is similarly riddled with malinvestment of all sorts created by bureaucratic intervention in our lives. The Fed’s QE has bailed out the insolvent banking system and artificially goosed the stock market higher; near zero interest rates have transferred wealth from savers to speculators; laws criminalizing certain things which people freely put in their bodies have given rise to a vast police/judicial/prison industrial complex which has incarcerated millions of nonviolent individuals guilty only of victimless crimes; countless billions are squandered on pointless overseas wars and domestic security theater to “protect” us from the enemies made by those wars; bureaucratic regulation of healthcare has foisted on us a failed medical model which very expensively treats symptoms but cures very little; billions are squandered on government schools which have produce functionally illiteracy. And, of course, there is the government’s vast $200 trillion future social welfare liability which is impossible to honor.

All of this centrally planned bureaucratic intervention has deformed our economy and polarized the citizenry. A President Trump – an outsider – is much more likely to tinker with reforms which can crash much of this misallocation of the nation’s resources made at gunpoint than would a President Clinton – an establishment insider – who would attempt to hold together the establishment’s grotesque house of cards by using even more force and fear than already exists.

I do not trust any unit of the US government any more. Nor the media, nor the elites, nor the intellectuals, none of them. The simple reason is that they all lie.
The USG lies are so numerous they would require volumes. The media lies about Hillary alone (favorable) and Trump alone (unfavorable lies) would likewise. The intellectuals lie about global warming (cooling / stasis / whatever), the races, the socialist agendas and so on; all lies.
It will require a reset (probably via an ocean of blood) and a new / revived Constitution, adhered to by all, before another America can be built. Until then, let it burn, and teach all what happens – when you lie enough.

Very thoughtful piece, and one that could not be intelligently discussed in the poisoned world of political correctness and Iron Maiden-enforced “equality.”

One thought that has repeatedly come to me as I wonder about the days to come is that men and women of goodwill, of all races and religions–you could say tribes–must remember that, as the old world is dying a new one will be born from what we shape with our words and actions.

If we abhor injustice and blind prejudice, we must be more alert than ever that we don’t reintroduce those influences in the midst of a chaotic and fearful time in our country’s history. As FM rightly said, tribalism does not, by itself, mean an exclusion or hatred of others. This will be hard to remember when the tribe looks like the last line of defense before annihilation. But without that powerful dynamic placed at the center of our intentions, all we will do is rebuild our house on the shifting sands that proved incapable of supporting our now-dying social structure.

We have the potential to wring from the coming turmoil a true American Ideal that allows all to participate and forces none to submerge their unique personal and tribal worth. If we can sustain that ideal we will have saved America and made possible a re-flowering of liberty and true human progress.

Francis, killer piece. I live amongst my own tribe, every move I make is insulated from the “others” in small but significant ways, by the people in my tribe. All that needs to happen for America, and for that matter, Canada, or even Europe to regain what it has lost, is for men to become men again. Revenge of the nerds is about to end. I don’t care what pajama boys think. About anything. Pajama boy shouldn’t be a destination, it should be a moment in time every young man strives to grow out of AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE. Hit the gym, build a fence, whatever, but DO SOMETHING. The world might slap you around a little bit, but that’s how character is built, and reputations honed, and respect earned. My tribe consists of myself and my lady friend. We have tried to find others of a like mind, but it never happened. We have given up on that tactic.

It goes without saying that we are screwed, maybe not as screwed as most, but that won’t matter as the ‘situation’ developes. We have supplies, but they won’t help us for very long. Without a defensive group, we are sitting ducks.

There are a few people in our neighborhood that I think would be good in a fight, but that is of little consolation to us. As it dawns on them how serious the situation is, they will immediately kill me and my lady friend and take our stuff. Then they will be killed by others and so on until there is nothing left to fight over.

You see, this is how White people are around here. In CT, White people will go out of their way to screw you up, even if that action doesn’t benefit them one iota. I never could understand it, but that’s the way it is.

There is very little sense of community, there’s absolutely NO sense of racial identity, and there are only rare incidences of true family bonding/love/support. What little family I have (no wife or kids-just brother and cousins) are strangers to me, and my lady friend’s family is a real mess, with some in jail, some in the nuthouse, some married to coloreds and all of them fanatically libtard democrats. Funny how that works.

So, Rock On! all you who have defensive groups. They are worth more than gold.

Whether politicized tribalism or primitive tribalism, the results are the same. A population that thinks the imitation of tribal leaders is the discovery of an identity. While this imitative conformity appears to validate predetermined tribal identity, it does not, as identity is immutably individual. Rather tribal indoctrination suppresses the infinite individual differences of self discovery and personal development, suppressing these differences wherever they contradict the tribal conformity decreed by the tribal leader du jour. The result in today’s look alike, think alike imitative snowflakes whining after a phony tribal identity that is socially acceptable ( and preferably tax funded. )

Just two thoughts. One on content and one on comment.
Great article, however, I found the ending quite inadequate. The “hang on to virtue” was a bit much. We are in the midst of a war and being “nice” to the enemy is not something I envision. Lord knows that I have had enough blog battles with those of the white supremist bent to know that “their” priorities are not the same as mine even though we both call ourselves “Americans.” To them it is all about color of skin.

But for the real enemy, those liberals, socialists, communists, RINO’s and traitors like the Clinton’s and many other politicians, business people, media, professors, etc. (the list is long but we know who they are), the herd must be culled. So, no, I do not believe in “live and let live.” We got into this situation by doing just that. I believe the quote by Geert Wilders is correct and “we” have not defended liberty. And at this late date, reeducating these people is not possible. They are the true irredeemables and must be dealt with accordingly. They were assembling a state that was not going to give freedom loving people any quarter and I do not believe any should be given.

On comments, I hold out hope and do not equate the US to the USSR in history past. The underpinnings of this country and still a large portion of it’s population is rooted in real heritage of freedom and justice that no one in the Soviet Union had experienced. That is what I hang on to. The fact that we can not only hang on, but that we can right the ship that is foundering.

FM, you are absolutely right that the leaders need to stand and be counted. Time to set aside the comfort of society and take action to defend and fix this country. I believe it can be done. I believe their are many like minded souls around the world who are chaffing at the brazen actions by the elites in Brussels and elsewhere who want to craft a world to their and only their benefit. This is an existential threat and it is a war we are currently fighting. I do not agree with fighting with one hand tied behind my back (example the stupid ROE’s placed on our troops in war zones), or in pretending that we take the moral high ground with people whose only aim is to destroy us. Kill them all on the battle field. We have no time for Guantanamo Bay’s, lawyers, courts, trials and other bullshit. These people have forfeited their citizenship by their actions. They are simply TRAITORS. We need to hunt them down and kill them where ever they are around the planet. We know who they are. We know where they live. They have invaded our homes. I declare “Castle Doctrine.”
