Gettysburg, Ghosts, Gifts and Gratitude

Earlier this week I posted a piece entitled “Thanks for Nothing, and Everything” which was generally political and fairly sardonic in nature.  Today, on the eve of Thanksgiving, I thought I would give thanks again, but this time distilled into a form more pure.  A Gettysburg Address of Gratitude, if you will:

Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.

Today, I feel an overwhelming sense of gratitude to the founders of the United States of America.  Thank you for mutually pledging to each other your lives, your fortunes, and your sacred honor.  Thank you for sacrificing all so I could take part in the fountainhead of blessings flowing centuries into your future; none of which I either earned or deserved.

In your honor and out of a sense of solemn gratitude, I pledge to do whatever is necessary; whatever I can, and to sacrifice that which is required of me in the days ahead so as to preserve and protect the freedoms and the God-given unalienable rights of free people.

Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battle-field of that war.

Today we stand at a crossroads.  An uncertain future but no more or less certain than of those who have gone before.  This is our time.  Today, we find ourselves in a war between two kingdoms:  Between those who embrace liberty, truth and honor against those who eagerly consume lies, spread deception and daily strive to achieve the destruction of free society.

We have come to dedicate a portion of that field, as a final resting place for those who here gave their lives that that nation might live. It is altogether fitting and proper that we should do this.

Today, I want to thank my father, his father and all of the fathers who came before.  I would like to thank my mother, her mother and all of the mothers who came before.  Thank you for how you lived and for preserving through the generations the wisdom, knowledge and pride of which I have received simply through the good fortune of sharing your lineage and by your heritage.

Great Grandfather, thank you for your gallant and courageous service during the Civil War, for serving three years and eight months, for holding steady under fire for 102 days and for rising from the ranks to a first lieutenancy.  Your achievements were truly representative of your devotion and patriotism to the flag of our country.

But, in a larger sense, we can not dedicate – we can not consecrate – we can not hallow – this ground. The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have consecrated it, far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here, but it can never forget what they did here. It is for us the living, rather, to be dedicated here to the unfinished work which they who fought here have thus far so nobly advanced.

Dad, you were a humble man who never hesitated to smile to everyone you met.  You were quick to laugh upon hearing a joke from a friend.  You worked hard your whole life. Your dad died when you were ten.  Your mom died when you were seventeen. You flew in airplanes during World War II and you received multiple citations for your bravery.

I will never forget your kind disposition, your gentle spirit, your good character, your faith and your respect for all people.

It is rather for us to be here dedicated to the great task remaining before us – that from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they gave the last full measure of devotion – that we here highly resolve that these dead shall not have died in vain

Mom, your words and actions molded my heart.  You were an intelligent and independent spirit who always told me about Grandpa who used to deliver milk by horse and wagon.  You joined the military at a young age and served in a hospital in San Diego and later at airbases throughout the world.  I know, in your later years, you would have preferred to live in a large city but you esteemed my father with a love that was enduring.

I always knew you were there for me.  Your heart was big and your devotion to our family set the standard for me. I have taken these qualities and have passed them on to my own children.

– that this nation, under God, shall have a new birth of freedom – and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth.

As seasons change, we must not.  We must hold dear that worth keeping.  Liberty, honor, morality and truth.  Dignity, work, innovation and perseverance.  Faith, hope, love and law.  These things are good.

I am grateful this Thanksgiving for my family, friends and neighbors. My loving wife and amazing children.  For my siblings, my progeny and our prospects.  For the warm spring breeze to carry the scent of new flowers.  The cleansing summer rains and the recollections of children laughing and splashing. For glorious days in the cool, crisp autumn air with the rays of sun to divide the panoply of falling leaves.  A plate of the mother-in-law’s freshly baked apple crisp made with love and the apples recently picked at her farm.  A winter fire crackling behind the sounds of laughter and conversations heard around the hearth.  The silence of cascading snowflakes in a dark wood.  The turning of seasons and for time honored traditions.

These things are also good.  And all, so good.

It’s easy to be grateful for “family, friends and neighbors” and things that are “all, so good”.

But, other than me, are there assholes in your life? Are you grateful for them? Have bad things happened to you? Are you grateful for that? For the Good Book says “Be thankful in all circumstances”. Until you achieve that, your gratefulness is but a shallow wading pool.

I am achieving such lofty heights in my own life. For example, I am grateful for Hillary’s service to this country. And I am grateful for all the thumbs down you fucking assholes will bequeath upon me.

Had you bothered to read Unscathed back when he endured much scorn for his early attempts, you would know he is thankful for assholes like you before everything else. It is not for small reason that the bald eagle, symbol of freedom and invincibility, chose to land in Untrodden’s venue.

You should apologize immediately, Stuckenheimer. Although, knowing Unabashed, an apology isn’t necessary, the man is a paragon of humbleness.

America is going through a very troubling time which began many years ago, long before our grandparents came into this world. In 1871 our Constitution was transformed into a Corporate system of Government which changed our path to a profit driven society and we were warned by our leaders of what was happening but we refused to listen and When JFK was killed, we were then being driven by the “Corporation”, A coup of sorts was to forever change our way of life in favor of Corporate slavery and the events of 9/11 was the trigger event for the end game of this Corporate regime to gain full control over this Global Corporation which Trump has now inherited from the Corporate leaders before him, he is not part of the Corporation and the Corporate leaders are scared to death of how he could unravel all the work done since 9/11 towards their global goal of control.
Trump knows how America has been beaten down and he must undo all the damage of these Corporate controllers have done to this nation and he cannot do this alone, he needs the help of all freedom loving people to expose this criminal cabal so we may return to a REAL sense of Patriotism and not the manufactured patriotism we experienced after 9/11. We must all play a part in getting back our country and not sit idly by and let the other guy do all the work and you silently reap the benefits of this struggle for America to finally find itself.

The big bosses will assume immunity from prosecution. Maybe so. I really haven’t addressed it directly but on a gut level I agree with the ideals of the Alt Right, as impracticable as they may be. However, I do not like the adaptation or reincarnation of the KKK into an Alt Right recreation.

I often find myself starting to write a reply, then I think about who the person I’m replying to is angry at and I think “Well… ya know… fuck it… whatever. Let it play out.”

I’ve told my HR department in a highly SJW infused industry, company, and city that they should consider men like me coming to actually speak to them a luxury because the next wave is just going to be angry and will not have a couple thousand years of literacy to explain their anger.

I think they still think I’m being amusing and “interesting”.

I already know that in a shock wave I’m as likely to be destroyed randomly or at best as a traitor to the people I’ve been speaking positively about for decades. Not because I am a traitor to them, but because I live within an unforgivable city border, accept an unforgivable technoincome, and drive an unforgivable car just because I like the car for its quality (Prius)… but still leaves behind a trail of smug from SanFran whether I want it to or not.

I hold no illusions about my tenuous position in this narrative. I know why the people that will tear me apart without having ever heard me will do so. They are wrong, but they aren’t wrong. Maybe it will play out differently. Maybe.

Maybe we’ll be whining in 20 years about the same things in 3D circle jerk VR forums. Dunno.

It is quite strange that we can feel gratitude, just as described, while concurrently knowing this society will be upended in a financial tsunami of epic proportions. Stranger, we all know in our gut and our head it will be soon. Any person with a bit of common sense knows our debt cannot be paid. We know the MSM has morphed into a propaganda delivery mechanism. And we know corruption in public and private spaces is causing irreversible damage.

What is difficult is to be hopeful without becoming an irrational being.

May we all be blessed beyond anything we deserve to survive the future, let alone thrive.

The Founders did not live at a time with a nuclear shadow over mankind, or with men and women who believed literal “Mutually Assured Destruction” was a viable policy. In our instance the downside is epic loss of human life, whether through starvation, war, or radiation effects known to our leaders but never truly considered.

If we are truly fortunate our collapse will mimic the fall of Rome. Sad, inevitable, but ultimately survivable and necessary for the next great cycle.

Is it within your capacity to contemplate the possibility that your circumstances might be better today if U.S. independence hadn’t happened?

I know alternate history is never anything but wild speculation, but it is very easy to create scenarios in which there would have been far less suffering worldwide over the last 240 years, and the people living in what is now the United States, and people everywhere else too, would be in a far better position today if it hadn’t happened. All it would have taken is a sensible king of England in the place of that (almost pure-bred German) disaster George III who appointed the right Prime Minister.
