IGNORANT MASSES SHOCKED BY PHILLY BEVERAGE TAX IMPACT

Check out this receipt and you realize why the country just elected Donald Trump. Liberal Democrat scumbag mayor Jim Kenney and his entirely Democrat city council thought it was a brilliant idea to ram a beverage tax down the throats of Philadelphians last year. They were doing it for the chilruns. It’s always for the chilrun. The ignorant masses bought the load of bullshit because they don’t understand maff. They understand it now. The tax went into effect on January 1 and the sticker shock is infuriating the ignorant masses.

This receipt for a 10 pack of flavored water shows a 51% beverage tax. It gets even better. PA has a sales tax of 6%. Philly already charges another 2% (for the chilruns) to make the sales tax 8%. These bastards now charge the 8% on the original price plus the beverage tax. Last week this purchase came to $6.47. Today it is $9.75.

Now ask yourself, who drinks the most sugary drinks? That’s right. Obese uneducated poor people who are likely to be scraping by on food stamps or very low incomes. Kenney and his liberal minions have fucked over their main voters. This tax is going to drive grocery purchases outside the city and hurt small restaurant owners. It isn’t benefiting kids. It’s funding the bloated pensions of teachers and government employees. Overall tax revenue will decline. Democrats are complete idiots when it comes to economics. Taxing their people to death is destroying Philly.

As a side note, PA, which already had the highest gas tax in the country, increased it by another 8 cents per gallon on January 1. I’m sure the corrupt PA Dept of Transportation will spend the millions wisely on bloated union construction contracts for sub-par work that is only two years late getting completed. Happy New Year from Taxylvania!!!!

Philadelphia rang in the new year with a controversial new beverage tax on soda and other sugar-sweetened drinks. The tax, which went into effect on Sunday, is the first one of its kind in a major city in the United States.

While the tax is technically 1.5 cents per ounce, which doesn’t sound too terrible, when buying a 10-pack of 20 oz bottles those numbers climb pretty quickly. In this case, a 10-pack of Propel flavored water that originally retailed for $5.99 had an additional three dollars tacked on to it in taxes.

Chuck Andrews picked up a $1.77 gallon jug of tea, got home and looked at his receipt.

“When I read the receipt I’m like, ‘Wait a minute. I paid more in tax than I did for the product,'” Andrews said.

The tax on the $1.77 gallon of tea was $1.92 cents.

“Which is OK if you had told me,” he said.

Andrews’ point is he would rather have the full cost, the product and the tax inclusive, posted on the main shelf tag.

A customer at a Save-A-Lot on Woodhaven Road snapped a picture of a 12-pack of diet green tea and the price surge of what normally costs $4.99. It’s now $8.03.

The money generated from the tax will help fund Mayor Jim Kenney’s Pre-K program.

“I understand that the school systems need money, but there’s other ways to go about it than to make such a drastic increase on soda,” Elena Porsch of South Philadelphia said.

The mayor’s office tells Action News, “The tax is on the distribution of sweetened beverages from companies like Coca-Cola to dealers like supermarkets, and because it’s not a sales tax… distributors don’t have to pass it on to customers.”

Small businesses like Franzones in Manayunk have already been getting an earful from customers about the higher prices and wonder what this will mean for their future.

“The businesses take a hit with profits, the customers take a hit with payment, and it’s kind of a lose-lose in Philadelphia with this tax,” Mike Maziarz of Franzones said.

Many people are saying they will go out of Philadelphia rather than pay the tax. Others say they will change what they buy.

“So now I know. I’m buying water, water, water,” Carl Saulsbury of North Philadelphia said.

It’s also important to note, if grocery stores purchased these taxable beverages last week from their distributors, then the soda tax wouldn’t apply. But if the beverages were purchased on the first of January or after, it would.

Here I am, being a radical yet again without even trying.

Is it possible for people to treat soda the way they do a cocktail and enjoy one as a treat every so often instead of thinking it’s a staple? I just don’t get it. Do they eat cake for breakfast every day?

The cost of freedom is eternal vigilance. A soda is four bucks.

Hey HFS! “Do they eat cake for breakfast every day?”

Of course not.

They have cake AND pudding for breakfast. Of course they call it “a muffin and yogurt” but it is really cake and pudding.

What a country! 🙂

Too Funny Jason–and 100% accurate.

Thank goodness I’m on well water. As a curiosity, do they tax kool-aid, the dry lipton powder mix or the flavor packets you can add to water bottles? If not, then problem solved ( except if you like sodas) just use a large water bottle and make your own.

Ditto
I have a soda every three years, maybe.
Diet soda makes people even sicker. Flavored water and tea?
Flavor it yourself for pennies. Tip: a slice of cuke or 2 in a glass of water
make it uniquely refreshing.

Not really. The reason they target the product is because of the cash they can wring out of them. Deprive them of the revenue and they’ll shift fire. Boycott whatever comes next. It takes politicians years to pick their targets and pass the legislation, it only takes consumer a second to return fire.

Not that I believe the people of Philadelphia have the discipline to make that small sacrifice, one that would make their lives better to boot.

exactly, starve the beast, if they were so inclined they could buy a couple things and make their own soda for pennies on the dollar but they won’t, they will bitch and moan like petulant children.

i get that the tax is bullshit and immoral but it’s a great opportunity for people to say “fuck this” and come up with their own solution. but they won’t, they will complain and demand someone someplace high up fix this for them. not only that, they will re-elect the same shitheels that impose this tax while protesting in street against Trump.

I bet EBT cards can be used to purchase soda. if it can, would anyone here be surprised???

My father in law was a RCA TV repairman back in the 50′. If your as old as me you remember the type who showed up at your door with a small suit case loaded with various vacuum tubes. His territory was Philly center and south. He loved his job. It was a time when you were welcomed as a guest into every house. He loved the various ethnic sections where you’d get a nice stiff drink on a cold day, a cold beer on a hot one and a bite to eat from grateful customers. Every ethnic section had it’s own charms. He especially loved the Italian section (where you ate great great food and could buy a penny lottery ticket-run by The Boys. Probably why he so eagerly granted me his daughter’s hand). It was he recalled like walking through a miniature Europe. The streets were spotless, the homes meticulously maintained and everywhere safe (minus the occasional whacking). He moved away to Boston and lost touch with Philly.

I took him through that area of Philly 35 years later just before he died. At the time I lived in Bucks County. It was by then the disgraceful, filthy, shit-hole you’ve so accurately described. He wiped tears from his eyes as we cruised thru old neighborhoods he once loved so much. I deeply regretted ever suggesting the trip to begin with. He said as we got back on the Schuylkill “I guess it’s time for me to go now”. Then I wiped the tears.

Oh, and about the poor fat fucks being screwed over by their own kind? Fuck em.

We had the best of it CC. No doubt about it. One of my favorite memories was coming home after school, picking up my .22 and walking into the woods to hunt squirrels. The neighbors would wave; no problem; they knew who I was, knew I was taught responsible ownership by my father, and knew I’d get my ass kicked if I did anything stupid. As for the ride ending, yes sir. I’ve pretty much maintained an attitude of gratitude in my later years and I think like Gus in Lonesome Dove, I want to be able to say to my loved ones…”By God Woodrow! It’s been a party, ain’t it!”

most of these jerks might be stupid but the driving factors are greed and envy, they want stuff for free and have been convinced by the politicians and academics and then convinced themselves that it is the moral thing to do. As Bastiat said, “When plunder becomes a way of life for a group of men in a society, over the course of time they create for themselves a legal system that authorizes it and a moral code that glorifies it.”

Remember, this is a double-win for the lie-brals:
1) sure they increase revenue to continue the blood flowing from their victims to their mouths.
But also,
2) they are saving the poor from themselves. Lie-brals see the poor as victims of society (ironically, it’s the lie-bral policies that victimize them) and too dumb to think for themselves. Maybe they are, but this is another “nudge” political policy. Lie-brals love to tell you what to do, while charging you more for doing what you love; and they do it all through taxes. Cigarettes, booze, bullets (in CA,) and now sugar. There is no end to what they want to tax you for.

Why not put a tax on organic fruits & vegetables? I mean if you can afford that shit, shouldn’t you be able to afford a 51% tax as well? This won’t happen, because, 1) they buy that 2) they don’t want to discourage the poor from buying a product they already can’t afford. Or a 51% tax on abortions? “Outrageous! it’s a woman’s body and she shouldn’t be taxed for doing what she wants with her body!” I agree none of us should, now remove all those previously mentioned taxes and don’t forget that cigar and beer tax you sack of shit.

It’s sickening that everyone believes the lie that the schools are underfunded. The morans near me voted in a school tax increase, because they fell for the lie that our schools would be taken over by the state if the property tax rate wasn’t increased. The teachers in our district are among the highest paid in any of the nearby districts, and when many were confronted with those numbers, all I heard were crickets.

So now that it is written into law, everyone has to pay a 1 .5 cent per ounce tax on sugary beverages, but where will it stop? Who cares? What is disturbing is the tax is taxed, just like ,I think, the business tax. You pay business priv tax then you pay net profit tax. Oh wait , they changed the name of these taxes. I don’t remember what it is but all they did was change the name to protect the ………… A. Innocent

The diets of people on disabilly and sisstence is largely made up of complete garbage, and what the Philly democrats call sugar drinks are only a small portion of the problem. They wake up and eat extruded white flour covered in sugar and wash it down with juice. Next time you’re in the grocery take a look at the carts of people who appear poor. All pre-packaged shit. No fresh produce, meats, cheeses, or whole grains. If we’re going to have food stamps (which we shouldn’t) then give these people a rudimentary cooking class and mandate what they can buy. Cookware is available for very low cost at Goodwill. Make them cook.

This quote from the article sums up precisely what the problem is: Chuck Andrews “Which is OK if you had told me,” he said. No its not damn well ok…. Just more theft from government. There should be pitchforks at the steps of the capital building. Then you have this gem from the PTB, The mayor’s office tells Action News, “The tax is on the distribution of sweetened beverages from companies like Coca-Cola to dealers like supermarkets, and because it’s not a sales tax… distributors don’t have to pass it on to customers.” Distributors don’t have to pass it on to customers..so the choice the business has is to absorb a ridiculous cost of doing business, or get less business due to customers being pissed off and buying somewhere else not under the jurisdiction of these idiot politicians. Looks to me like those businesses have a third choice, leave the shithole for greener pastures. Happened in Detroit, happening in Chicago, happening in Philly. Let the exodus continue….

We don’t “keep” cokes in the house, but sometimes, we’ll buy a 2-Liter of coke for the kids on Friday night for pizza.

(1. Remember that in Texas, all carbonated sodas are called “coke”. We usually buy Sprite for the boy and ginger ale or a stevia-sweetened drink for the girls.)
(2. Now I feel dirty when I admit we buy pizza. What the fuck?)

One of my goals for 2017 is to learn to make my own soda with a ginger bug and water kefir grains.

I’m sure the dindus have never considered attempting to learn to make something for themselves.
