June 8, 1967 — the fourth day of the Six Day War between Israel and Egypt, Syria and Jordan — was a beautiful day in the Mediterranean. The USS Liberty was in international waters off the coast of Egypt. Israeli aircraft had flown over the USS Liberty in the morning and had reported that the ship was American. The crew, in close proximity to the war zone, was reassured by the presence of Israeli aircraft. But at 2:00 p.m. sailors sunbathing on the deck saw fighter jets coming at them in attack formation. Red flashes from the wings of the fighters were followed by explosions, blood and death. A beautiful afternoon suddenly became a nightmare. Who was attacking the USS Liberty and why? The attack on the Liberty was an attack on America.
The Liberty was an intelligence ship. Its purpose was to monitor Soviet and Arab communications in order to warn both Israel and Washington should the Soviets enter the war on behalf of its Arab allies. The Liberty was armed only with four machine guns to repel boarders. Its request for a destroyer escort had been denied.

The assault on the Liberty is well documented. With no warning, the Liberty was attacked by successive waves of unmarked jets using cannon, rockets and napalm. The attacking jets jammed all of the US communications frequencies, an indication they knew the Liberty was an American ship.
The air attack failed to sink the Liberty. About 30 minutes into the attack three torpedo boats appeared flying the Star of David. The Israeli boats were not on a rescue mission. They attacked the Liberty with cannon, machine guns and torpedoes. One torpedo struck the Liberty mid-ship, instantly killing 25 Americans while flooding the lower decks. The Israeli torpedo boats destroyed the life rafts the Liberty launched when the crew prepared to abandon ship, sending the message there’d be no survivors.
At approximately 3:15 two French-built Israeli helicopters carrying armed Israeli troops appeared over the Liberty. Phil Tourney could see their faces only 50/60 feet away. He gave them the finger. Surviving crew members are convinced the Israelis were sent to board and kill all survivors.
The Israeli jets destroyed the Liberty’s communication antennas. While under attack from the jets, crew members strung lines that permitted the ship to send a call for help. The USS Saratoga and the USS America launched fighters to drive off the attacking aircraft, but the rescue mission was aborted by direct orders from Washington.
When the Liberty notified the Sixth Fleet it was again under attack, this time from surface ships, the Fleet commander ordered the carriers America and Saratoga to launch fighters to destroy or drive off the attackers. The order was unencrypted and picked up by Israel, which immediately called off its attack. The torpedo boats and the hovering helicopters sped away. Israel quickly notified Washington that it had mistakenly attacked an American ship, and the US fighters were recalled a second time.
The USS Liberty suffered 70% casualties, with 34 killed and 174 wounded. Although the expensive state of the art ship was kept afloat by the heroic crew, it later proved unsalvageable and was sold as scrap.
Why didn’t help come?
No explanation has ever been given by the US government for Defense Secretary Robert McNamara and President Lyndon B. Johnson‘s orders for the Sixth Fleet to abort the rescue mission. Lt. Commander David Lewis of the Liberty told colleagues that Admiral L. R. Geis, commander of the Sixth Fleet carrier force, told him that when he challenged McNamara’s order to recall the rescue mission, LBJ came on the line and said he didn’t care if the ship sank, he wasn’t going to embarrass an ally. The communications officer handling the transmission has given the same account.
A BBC documentary on the Israeli raid reports confusion about the attacker’s identity almost resulted in a US assault on Egypt. Richard Parker, US political counsel in Cairo, confirms in the BBC documentary he received official communication an American retaliatory attack on Egypt was on its way.
The US government’s official position on the USS Liberty corresponds with Israel’s: The attack was unintentional and a result of Israeli blunders. This is the official position despite the fact that CIA Director Richard Helms, Secretary of State Dean Rusk, Assistant Secretary of State Lucius Battle, and a long list of US Navy officers, government officials and Liberty survivors are on record saying the Israeli attack was intentional.
According to Helms, Battle and the minutes of a White House meeting, President Johnson believed the attack was intentional. Helms says LBJ was furious and complained when The New York Times buried the story on page 29, but that Johnson decided he had to publicly accept Israel’s explanation. “The political pressure was too much,” Helms said.
US communications personnel, intelligence analysts and ambassadors report having read US intercepts of Israeli orders to attack the Liberty. In one intercept an Israeli pilot reports that the Liberty is an American ship and asks for a repeat and clarification of his orders to attack an American ship. One Israeli who identified himself as one of the pilots later came to America and met with US Representative Pete McCloskey and Liberty survivors. The pilot said he had refused to participate in the attack when he saw it was an American ship. He was arrested upon returning to base.
The Liberty flew the US flag. The ship’s markings, GTR-5, measured several feet in height on both sides of the bow. On the stern the ship was clearly marked USS LIBERTY. Mistaking the Liberty for an Egyptian ship, as Israel claims to have done, was impossible.
Tattered flags show ferocity of the attacks
The Israelis claim the Liberty flew no flag, but two US flags full of holes from the attack exist. When the first flag was shot down, crewmen replaced it with a flag 7-feet by 13-feet. This flag, with its battle scars, is on display at NSA headquarters at Ft. Mead, Maryland.
Admiral John S. McCain Jr., the father of the current US senator, ordered Admiral Isaac C. Kidd and Captain Ward Boston to hold a court of inquiry and to complete the investigation in only one week. In a signed affidavit Captain Boston said President Johnson ordered a cover-up and that he and Admiral Kidd were prevented from doing a real investigation. Liberty survivors were ordered never to speak to anyone about the event. Their silence was finally broken when Lt. Commander Jim Ennes published his book, Assault on the Liberty .
It is now established fact that the attack on the Liberty was intentional and was covered up by President Johnson and every administration since. There has never been a congressional investigation, nor has the testimony of the majority of survivors ever been officially taken. Moreover, testimony that conflicted with the cover-up was deleted from the official record.
Disgusted by the US government’s official stance discounting the survivors’ reports, Admiral Tom Moorer, retired Chief of Naval Operations and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, organized the Moorer Commission to make public the known facts about the attack and cover-up. The Commission consisted of Admiral Moorer, former Judge Advocate General of the US Navy Admiral Merlin Staring, Marine Corps General Raymond G. Davis and former US Ambassador to Saudi Arabia James Akins.
The Commission’s Report concluded:
- “That there is compelling evidence that Israel’s attack was a deliberate attempt to destroy an American ship and kill her entire crew.
- “That fearing conflict with Israel, the White House deliberately prevented the US Navy from coming to the defense of USS Liberty by recalling Sixth Fleet military rescue support while the ship was under attack.
- “That surviving crew members were threatened with “court-martial, imprisonment or worse’ if they exposed the truth; and [the survivors] were abandoned by their own government.
- “That there has been an official cover-up without precedent in American naval history.
- “That a danger to our national security exists whenever our elected officials are willing to subordinate American interests to those of any foreign nation.”
Why did Israel attack the Liberty? Was something super secret going on that is so damaging it must be protected at all cost?
Some experts believe Tel Aviv decided to sink the Liberty because the ship’s surveillance capability would discover Israel’s impending invasion and capture of Syria’s Golan Heights, an action opposed by Washington. Others believe Israel was concerned the Liberty would discover Israel’s massacre of hundreds of Egyptian POWs, a war crime contemporaneous with the attack on the US ship. Still others believe that Israel intended to blame the attack on Egypt in order to bring America into the war. It is known the US was providing Israel with reconnaissance and that there were joint US-Israeli covert operations against the Arabs that Washington was desperate to keep secret.
Survivors with whom I spoke said the attack was the easy part of the experience. The hard part has been living with 40 years of official cover-up and betrayal by the US government. One survivor said that he was asked to leave his Baptist church when he spoke about the Liberty, because the minister and fellow church-goers felt more loyalty to Israel than to a member of the congregation who had served his country. His church’s position was that if our government believed Israel, the survivors should also.
Survivor Phil Tourney said that “being forced to live with a cover-up is like being raped and no one will believe you.”
Survivor Gary Brummett said he “feels like someone who has been locked up for 40 years on a wrongful conviction.” Until the US government acknowledges the truth of the attack, Brummett says the survivors are forced to live with the anger and dismay of being betrayed by the country they served.
Survivor Bryce Lockwood has been angry for 40 years. The torpedo that killed his shipmates, wrecked his ship and damaged his health was made in the USA.
Survivor Ernie Gallo told me he “has been haunted for four decades” by the knowledge that his commander-in-chief recalled the US fighters that could have prevented most of the Liberty’s casualties.
Every American should be troubled by the fact that the President of the United States and the Secretary of Defense prevented the US Sixth Fleet from protecting a US Navy ship and its 294-man crew from foreign attack. They should also be troubled that the President ordered the Navy to determine the attack was unintentional.

The real story behind the USS Liberty, is the part played by “our best friends in the Middle East”, and as usual they are the Zionist evil ones.
During President Johsons tenure in the White House he appointed a “special advisor for security affairs” by the name of Walt Rostow, an economist by trade from MIT and other prestigious places that were and now occupied by Israeli Zionists of higher learning. Anyway, Rostow was born of Russian Jewish parents(surprise surprise), and became Johnsons top dog for international security. He had very close ties to the likes of James Jesus Angleton, and the other ranking CIA members.
Rostow was a big supporter of Israel, and was instrumental in obtaining weapons for them prior to the six day war.
Rostow along with the deputy director of the CIA and the director of the state department another Israeli firster had formed a secret committee called the 303 Committee to handle international security affairs, to cover for Johnson. They met in top secret in 1966, and drafted a secret agreement between the USA and Israel to eliminate Nasser of Egypt because he had Russian support and this threatened Israel’s expansion at that time. They agreed to stage a plan called the “frontlet 615” plan(otherwise known as the Cyanide plan) to start a war between the USA and Russia using the USS liberty as a False Flag. During that time Israel was threatening to take the Golan Heights in Syria. This the USA objected to on paper but it reality we were helping Israel in this regard. Angleton was the inside CIA man(another Zionist Lover), that they used to obtain the secret radio transmission codes that the USS liberty was using to allow Isreal to jam radio transmissions on that fateful day.
The secret agreement or plan 615(that was the day that coincided with the Six Day War), that included Israel’s attack on the Golan Heights. Not know to Israel the USA had a communication plane in the area and had become aware of Israel’s intention to take the Golan Heights. This plan 615 included the need to completely destroy the USS liberty to remove any trace of Israeli/USA collaboration and to blame Egypt for the attack and to use USA soldiers blood to fight another war with Russia. They ran cover for LBJ, the Zionist lover. So again, ANOTHER, Zionist Jew Rostow and his buddies at the CIA were involved in destroying our country. Sound familiar 911??. Just like today, those rat bastards are scurrying all over the CIA, the defense department and the government. Shades of 1917 in Russia. Scary indeed. When will the people wake up?
Obtain and watch “Dead In the Water”, a documentary on the deliberate attack on the USS Liberty. It is known that nefarious elements both in Israel and the USA conspired to “sanitize” this murderous attack. IF it was a case of “mistaken identity”, why did the attack go on for HOURS??
Both Israeli and certain US officials (Lyndon Johnson and Henry Kissinger, for one) wanted the crew of the USS Liberty DEAD because the crew was privy to information on a massacre by Israelis on an Egyptian city as well as a “false flag” operation where Israel hoped to draw the US into a war with Egypt. The “Six-day-war was NOT a response to an attack by Arab forces, but was a “pre-emptive strike” that was designed to gain Israel land.
It is curious to note that the remaining survivors of the attack were warned not to discuss the “incident” under pain or courts martial and were scattered throughout the Navy.
The Captain was presented with the Medal of Honor, not at the White House (which is protocol) but at an obscure Naval base.
There are books that have been written about these acts of TREASON by our own government.
The attack on the USS Liberty will not go away, despite Israel’s and traitorous US officials attempts to stifle investigation into this act.
Everyone must have heard of the Israeli attack on the USS Liberty during the Six-Day-War in 1967. Just to recap, the Liberty, which was focused on intelligence-gathering and thus lightly armed, was attacked by Israeli Mystere jets using machine guns and napalm, and by attack boats which hit the ship with several torpedoes. As survivors scrambled for safety the Israelis strafed the lifeboats with machine gun fire. All the evidence to hand makes it clear that the Israelis knew that the Liberty was American although the motives of Moshe Dayan, who ordered the attack, remain unclear to this day.
Nothing illustrated the validity of the ZOG (Zionist Occupation Government) charge than this incident and the American reaction to it. For a start while the two hour attack was in progress “Defense”
Secretary Robert McNamara called back a US rescue mission, stating’ President Johnson is not going to war or embarrass a close ally for the sake of a few sailors’. Leaving the callousness aside, and the fact that the same President used ‘an attack on a few sailors’ (Tonkin incident) to declare war on North Vietnam, the reluctance to ’embarrass’ a country that was in the process of murdering your servicemen beggars belief.
But what really blew my mind was the story of the Grafton Memorial. This relates to the privately-funded memorial library to be established in the city of Grafton near Milwaukee twenty years after the attack. As was and still is required in the Land Of The Free, the Israeli connection was played down with the focus almost exclusively on commemorating those who had served and suffered.
Now you’d imagine that local Jews would have at worst kept their heads down, at best supported the project while apologizing for the Israeli ‘mistake’. Not a bit of it! Instead the attack dogs were unleashed, crying – you’ve guessed it – ‘anti-Semitism’. Rabbi Gideon Goldenholz declared it ‘insulting to Jews’ while James Fromstein of the Milwaukee Jewish Council proclaimed the Liberty incident(!) to be a ‘sensitive subject considered offensive to Jewish people everywhere’ I swear I’m not making this up.

McCain’s father covered up the Israeli killing of 34 Americans aboard a U.S. Navy ship during the Six-Day War of 1967. As senior naval officer for Europe and the Mediterranean, Admiral John S. Insight into the motivation for this presidential cover-up began with identifying how Lyndon Johnson allowed himself to be manipulated. The first clue emerged after a discussion with former Congressman Paul Findley, an 11-term Republican from Illinois (1961-1983)

In response to a question, Findley identified Arthur Krim as the Jewish adviser and fundraiser closest to Lyndon Johnson. Research quickly uncovered published materials on Krim written by the late Grace Halsell, a speechwriter for LBJ and later an author of books chronicling the political influence of Christian Zionists such as Jerry Falwell. Johnson personally hired Halsell, a native Texan, who, impor- tantly for this analysis, was inside the White House Situation Room during the Six-Day War. With that war, Israeli security became a priority of U.S. foreign policy and a focal point of Pentagon coordination as Tel Aviv became a favored recipient of U.S. military technology.
After that 1967 conflict, the U.S. also emerged as a major Israeli arms supplier. Pro-Israeli advisers surrounded Johnson in the decision-making that led to the 1967 war. “Everyone around me, without exception was pro-Israel,” Halsell recalled. She identified more than a dozen close advisers to Johnson, including Walt Rostow, his national secu- rity adviser, and brother Eugene Rostow serving as under secretary of state for political affairs, and former Supreme Court Justice Arthur Goldberg, then serving as U.S. Ambassador to theUN.
White House counsels Leo White and Jake Jacobsen were like- wise pro-Israel as were two key speechwriters: Richard Goodwin, husband of biographer Doris Kearns Goodwin, and Ben Wattenberg whose parents moved to the U.S. from Palestine. Likewise domestic affairs adviser Larry Levinson and John Roche, an avid Zionist and Johnson’s intellectual-in-residence.
It was the role of Arthur Krim, however, that confirmed the lengthy pre-staging of the 1967 war and explained the orchestration that led to LBJ’s cover-up of the Israeli attack on the USS Liberty. A New York attorney and president of United Artists, Krim also served as finance committee chairman for the Democratic Party when Johnson was its leader and Jewish contributors accounted for more than half the funds raised

The Krims became regular guests at the LBJ Ranch. As Halsell explained: “There were also many instances in which Arthur and Mathilde were guests at the White House, and other times when, for many days running, Mathilde (without her husband (was a guest there. The Krims built a vacation home near the LBJ Ranch known as Mathilde’s house, and Johnson often traveled there by helicopter.”
As with Morgenthau’s proximity to Roosevelt, the Krims’ prox- imity to Johnson ensured that their friendship flourished when the Senate majority leader became John F. Kennedy’s surprise pick as Vice President and then succeeded him to the Presidency following Kennedy’s assassination in November 1963.
Over the 1967 Memorial Day weekend, the Krims were house- guests at the LBJ Ranch when the commander-in-chief learned of Soviet Premier Aleksei Kosygin’s warning that “if Israel starts military action, the Soviet Union will extend help to the attacked party.” While waiting for the State Department to draft a response to Israeli Prime Minister Levi Eshkol, Johnson and the Krims drove to a neighbor’s home where an aide brought the message for the president’s review. Halsell described the changes that LBJ made to the message while in the Krims’ company (to explain America’s perspective on the pending conflict:..

Johnson then traveled to New York for a $1,000-a-plate fundraiser on June 3 sponsored by Arthur Krimwho chaired the President’s Club of New York. Mathilde was seated next to Johnson when Abe Feinberg, the American Zionist community’s legendary political fundraiser, leaned over Mathilde’s shoulder and whispered: “Mr. Pres- ident, it [Tel Aviv’s attack] can’t be held any longer. It’s going within the next 24 hours.”

Israel was neither under attack nor under threat of attack as Israeli commanders later conceded. The air raid sirens were props in the stagecraft of waging war by way of deception.
The circumstances were stage-managed to make both Israelis and foreign observers believe the Jewish state was endangered while Tel Aviv annexed land belonging to its neighbors that it still occupies four decades later

In the war’s first few hours, the “victimized” Israelis destroyed the Egyptian Air Force while its aircraft were still on the ground. By evening, the Jordanian Air Force was also largely destroyed. Walt Rostow sent Johnson a memo describing Tel Aviv’s military success as “the first day’s turkey shoot.” LBJ also received a memo that day from Arthur Krimthat read, “Many arms shipments are packed and ready to go to Israel, but are being held up. It would be helpful if these could be released.” Johnson ordered the arms shipped. By the evening of the second day, two-thirds of Syria’s air force had been destroyed

On June 8, 1967, Israeli jets attacked the USS Liberty, a 455-foot vessel, firing 30 mm aircraft cannons and rockets and dropping napalm. Three Israeli torpedo boats then attacked the ship with 20 mm cannons, 50-caliber machine guns and torpedoes. One torpedo blew a 39-foot hole in a former cargo hold of this refurbished WWII Liberty ship that had its cargo space converted to research facilities for an intelligence team. The blast killed 25 and left the ship listing nine degrees to starboard.
Liberty crew members testified that Israeli torpedo boats fired on firefighters and stretcher-bearers. Israeli machine gunners also strafed the ship’s fire hoses and destroyed its life rafts at close range as survivors sought to douse fires and evacuate those most grievously wounded. The attackers killed 34 and wounded 174 of a crew of 294 for a 70% casualty rate

You might find it amusing to learn the Israel is currently making ‘friendly’ overtures to Iran, now that it appears the Saudi Qatar-Turkey gas pipeline is not going to be built any time soon (but the Persian Pipeline might be).
Any Israeli/Iran relationship is fishy. Iran brought supplies across Syria to Lebanon for Hezbollah to rain rockets down on Israel.
Why do you think Israel was bombing Assad’s troops – to eliminate Assad (same with U.S.) for Regime Change and put in a U.S. puppet to stop Iran sending arms to Hezbollah.
Replacing Assad has failed, for the moment at least. I presume they are attempting to minimize the consequences of that failure.

You can ALWAYS count on Paul Craig Roberts to provide the most anti-Israel ‘analysis’ possible. And, he purposely left out key elements like the one where LBJ specifically stated that he wanted that [EXPLETIVE DELETED] ship at the bottom of the sea.
This one comes up a lot. You would think that people had never heard of a friendly fire incident before. Furthermore, the United States and Israel WERE NOT ALLIES AT THE TIME.
There were certainly moves by the US and Israel to come closer together to block moves by the Soviet Union to gain hegemony in the region. But, those moves were a far cry from the kind of alliance that we have today. Just eleven years before the USS Liberty event, in 1956, the United States had forced Israel to retreat from the Sinai.
Furthermore, when hostilities began, Israel contacted the United Nations and communicated to the world that Israel had created a naval exclusion zone. Any ships found in that ‘exclusion zone’ would be sunk. Period.
It was supremely foolish of the US Navy to send the USS Liberty into the naval exclusion zone. The problem is that there appears to be evidence that it was deliberate.

When the USS Liberty was attacked, the President of the United States said to the Secretary of Defense McNamara:
“I want that goddamn ship going to the bottom.”
This was clearly a false flag setup, by the President of the United States of America to get an okay for an invasion of the Middle East.
But, Israel wasn’t a firm ally of the United States, so there was no way that the United States would have trusted Israel to participate in a ‘false flag attack’ on one of its own ships. But, there was one way that Israel could have been trusted to follow through:
Giving false intelligence
Remember that by June 8th, Israel had destroyed Egypt’s ability to command the battlefield in the Sinai by knocking out their communications. Egypt’s military high command would have been desperate to find out what was actually going on, and sending a ‘spy ship’ to the coast of the Sinai would have been one such way of doing that.
However, that would have also been a disaster for Israel, which was moving military resources to fight the Syrians that were attacking in the Golan.
Knowing that Israel had set a naval exclusion zone for the coast of Israel and the Sinai, I believe that the United States sent the USS Liberty towards/into that zone, while telling the Israelis that it was Egyptian.
And please, don’t tell me that there was an American Flag. The Israelis would have known that Egypt had a large supply of ‘American Flags’. There is no way that the Israelis would have trusted such an appearance, especially if the Americans were telling them that there were no American ships in the area.
Was Israel tricked into attacking an American ship?
I believe that they were, especially since Israel could have received no benefit from knowingly attacking an American ship. Nor would the Israelis have trusted America to fulfill any promises made by the American administration, in setting up a false flag. America had not been very friendly up to that point.
Israelis have always had a profound love for the United States. For them to knowingly attack the US would have been… unimaginable. There is just no way that Israel would have done that.
So, those that wish to attack Israel over the USS Liberty need to turn their anger on LBJ. After all, President Johnson was accessory to the murder of JFK. Tricking the Israelis to attacking the USS Liberty would have been child’s play, by comparison.

It is long overdue to get the Palestine statehood issue resolved. Seventy years of obfuscation while Israel encroaches on Palestinian-owned land is enough.
As to “betrayal” it is the USA that has been betrayed, multiple times, by its “friend” and “ally”, Israel. Despite TRILLIONS in “foreign aid” and “loan guarantees” given by the American taxpayer, it is never enough…

Israel has over a hundred nukes, manufactured with stolen American classified technology, refuses inspections of its nuclear facilities and is, in general, a “pain in the ass” to the rest of the world, along with (blackmailed) “big brother” United States of America.
In fact, under current U S law, it is ILLEGAL for the U S to give “foreign aid” to any country that possesses nukes and has not agreed to IAEA inspections or controls–Israel being the only exception to this “rule”…
It is no secret that the U S State Department is infested (infected?) with dual-nationality Israeli-Americans who form (and foment) the bulk of our neocon “foreign policy” straight from Tel Aviv. In fact there are 40 or so congressmen and senators with dual-nationality “ties” to Israel.
Most people are unaware that Israel holds a “Damocles sword” over the world. Any attack on Israel will be met with a nuclear device being detonated in a city of Israel’s choosing. Israel calls this the “Samson option” and is very real.
Israel refuses to abide by IAEA guidelines concerning its nukes as its nukes are distributed around the world. Israel would not be able to produce all of them. No delivery systems are needed as Israel’s nukes are already “in place”.
Look for another “false flag” operation with the blame being put on Iran. You can bet that some Iranian passports will be found in the rubble.
