Mainstream Media: The Buggy Whip of the 21st Century

Guest Post by Hardscrabble Farmer

Well, you have certainly had one heck of year, haven’t you? I can’t imagine how it must feel to be you right now. This time last year you were yucking it up with your buddies in the White House about how Obama was going to ram through as many executive actions as he could to push the immigration debate into the ‘win’ category. How’d that work out for you? From there you went right into a National Lampoon-style daily snark against the guy you said didn’t stand a chance of winning and that went even better, right up until November 8th.

The looks on your faces that night were almost worth the past fifty years of your constant obfuscation and perfidy. It was a real-time version of the folks riding First Class on the Titanic realizing that their tuxedoes weren’t buying them a whole lot of sympathy down at the lifeboat boarding station. Stricken is the word that comes to mind. To call what the public delivered to you an ass-whooping would be an understatement. You guys looked like a collectivist version of Ronda Rousey after Holly Holm got done with her. Beaten, down for the count and weepy in the morning.

So why bother trying to keep up with the pretenses? In the grocery business, they’d say you were past your sell by date. There was a time when you had not only a purpose, but a mandate and those must have been heady days indeed, the gravitas and respect measured out in equal parts from every quarter of America. I remember well the way my own Grandparents would hang on every word uttered by the distinguished clergy of the time; Huntley, Brinkley and Cronkite.

If there had been room on the walls their portraits would have hung beside the ones of JFK and FDR, so admired were they for their earnest and judicious reporting on the comings and goings of our political leaders and the events of the day. Later, guys like Woodward and Bernstein turned themselves into nerdy Batmen, flipping the script on the powerful and turning up the pressure until their only recourse was to clamber on a helicopter and wave grimly not only to the public but any legacy that may have been hoped for. Good times, indeed.

But then something happened. You got a little full of yourselves and began to see your role in the public sphere, not as one of watchdog and members of the estimable Fourth Estate, but as quasi-celebrities and political insiders. Your leanings had always been left wing, but for most of your history, you managed to keep it under your hats, to at least pay some sort of lip service. What made you think America needed more talentless hacks who wanted to turn this country into a humorless version of a Rob Zombie flick, in Spanish? What were you thinking? At least the weathermen got it right sometimes.

Of course, power is an intoxicating beverage and drink deeply from the well you did. I believe it was Lincoln who said, “Nearly all men can stand adversity, but if you want to test a man’s character, give him power.” That’s a Lincoln quote you guys must have overlooked when you mined that shaft dry and one that you ought to have taken to heart but then I give you far too much credit. Of course, I’m jaded to the same degree that I’ve been deceived, a moral form of spirit level. You can only lie to people so many times before they leave you to your wolves and baby, the wolves are hungry.

Listen, this isn’t meant to be some kind of gloating/dance on your grave celebration of your untimely demise, it’s more of a deathbed consolation like you’d see on an episode of Intervention. It’s not that we don’t love you, but it is your fault, like completely and totally. I am literally crying as I write. What were you thinking? You had it all and you blew it, big time. Those White House Press Dinners you did were a bad idea. You should have kept at least a pretend distance between you and your Tiger Beat heart-throbs, but no, you had to rub elbows with the creme de la creme and pretend that you were part of their circle.

I hate to break this to you, especially when you’re so vulnerable, but they really weren’t that into you. Kind of like that dog that Democratic Presidents always get right before they move into the White House to show how down to earth they are and then send off to the vet for the shot right before they move on to Chappaqua or Kalorama- that’s you. It must sting to discover how unimportant you really are to the people you thought you made. I can hardly think of you guys without the image of Fredo in my mind, making his moving case to Michael.

I hate to use a Trumpism to make the point, but if the shoe fits.

Sad.

So here we are, the dawn of a new era and you guys are still trying to convince yourselves that you’re relevant. You come up with ways to explain your career Stalingrad, inventing terms like “Fake News” that get hung around your neck like a gasoline-soaked tire by bloggers who don’t even own a printer but still manage to write circles around entire networks. Great stories with real implications are buried as fast as you can dig their graves and nonsensical sidebars feature in your daily routines like angels dancing on pinheads, which they are.

It would be amusing if it wasn’t so pathetic, the moral preening and posturing about integrity when anyone with a dial-up and two fingers can find examples not only of your shallow depth but flat out dishonesty. A nationwide media version of Pontypool isn’t that funny when someone rubs your nose in it, is it? Well, to everyone who isn’t you, it is.

Let’s just admit the truth, for once, for old times sake. It’s over, this run you’ve had. Like hoop skirts and buggy whips, some things get retired for all time and that’s you. I know you don’t want to believe it no matter how much we keep telling you but really, it’s time to pack your s*#@ and get the F*#! out. The news has it that you’re being replaced with people with a lot more integrity and depth and the good news is you can still watch the goings on, only you won’t be there.

Stuck, you definitely stole HF’s thunder.
I usually succumb to videos that say it better than I ever could.

Prof Pangloss said that the 3 parts of government took turns at power, sometimes it was the presidency, sometimes the Supreme Court and sometimes the legislature. HF is correct that the fourth estate got drunk with its own power and thought it would never come to an end.

And He (the hardscrabble farmer) is so right … what is the sound of 4-5 billion people giving a “golf clap” to the lies and obfuscation.
Here is CNN’S Mea Culpa….. http://edition.cnn.com/interactive/2017/01/politics/trump-inauguration-gigapixel/ ,,,,,,,,, and they had the temerity to say “who cares how many turned up” …FUCK THEM!!. Go on, I dare you! compare it to the previous (by every metric) failure.

So here’s what I don’t get. How are these news stations and news programs still profitable at a time when only 32% of the population trusts the media?

Local stations are profitable – https://www.rtdna.org/article/rtdna_research_the_business_of_tv_news – and while I don’t have a citation handy I believe the all-news networks do pretty well (I remember something about CNN clearing $1B last year).

Who’s buying all those ads? And what do they think they’re getting for them?

See my post above. They(CNN) really scored a home penalty and everyone is laughing at them (yes it was kept very very quite as it was a major embarrassment because someone forgot they. I saw an astounding # a couple of years back.
During non election years, the pharmaceutical industry accounts for over 50% of tv/radio ad revenue.
I actually think it’s larger, closer to 70% but I’m too lazy to look it up so as a cya I said 50%.
Kinda dovetails with what Denninger posted over on another thread, doesn’t it?

A lot of their income is from Cable packages that include CNN automatically, whether you want it or not. You pay and they get their cut of every subscription. Hence, one reason their revenue stream is under pressure from “cable cutters” as well as those who can opt out from CNN for their “fake” news.

How suddenly everything has changed, as what was once a fairly durable Concept of Culture now appears, for the first time, to be seriously imperiled. For Hillary Clinton’s election campaign, the machine was switched on again, the engine began to hum the progressive mantra, the comedic cabals were gathered together once more on late night talk shows, everything seemed to be going according to plan, and the machine started to generate a protective enclave in which people could gather and coordinate. But as we all saw, the machine this time around was ineffectual in generating a cultural bubble durable enough to uphold the unity of the coalition, and to withstand the efforts of the Right to undermine its structural integrity.

It is on new media outlets, like Twitter, that the Right is currently dominating efforts to recruit and develop talent. As some graduated college and moved to L.A. to become comedy writers of Anti-Republican late night monologues, their more disillusioned peers moved to Twitter to troll them anonymously with forms of digital comedy and performance art that have quickly established themselves as the cutting edge of contemporary culture.

The apprehension of this transformation must be centr

A great article. Your words are biting in truth. Sad indeed. A couple of weeks back I went to local University one evening to listen to a speech by the CEO of Siemens Canada. His talk was about trends in automation. How disruptive technologies are upending established economies. Many there were students concerned about how they would find employment. For me though I couldn’t help but think that most critical disruptive technology was the democratization of the underlying information itself.

The books no longer require Scribes and Prophets. Technology has turned them to stone. The MSM have not yet realized it but they are now just Luddites dressed in Pretentious Suits.

wdg

Great article. The MSM is like dead men walking. TRUST in the MSM is gone and can never be recovered. Of course, these never were the independent and intelligent journalists of the past who were not afraid to speak truth to corrupt power. The modern “journalists” are not journalists at all but propaganda agents or FAKE “journalists” paid by the Deep State who bought the media with Bill Clinton’s blessing and consolidated it into six mega-media companies with the objective of shaping and controlling public opinion. And it worked for a long time but now the gig is up and these corporate gangsters are left with decaying assets and diminishing viewership/readership. Thanks to the internet and a growing global network of intelligent, informed, honest and courageous bloggers, truth has triumphed over evil and seeped through the MSM slime and sludge sold as honest journalism.

Francis Marion

My Mrs. has Global News on in the morning here for weather and traffic reports. It is almost unbearable to watch these days. It’s become such an exercise in brainwashing and bias that even she comments from time to time on how blatant it is. My wife is VERY nonpolitical. I know when she starts to say something that the system and especially the media has hit rock bottom.

wdg
wdg

I receive the Ottawa Citizen/National Post delivered each morning to my door. I only subscribe to this propaganda to get some of the local news and to try and understand the Deep State agenda. What I find remarkable is the similarity in the way the news is reported by the MSM throughout the western world. It is clear that they are all singing from the same songbook which would indicate that the manufacture of FAKE news is international in scope. Without doubt, we live in a FAKE world with Fake news, FAKE politicians (aka Deep State agents), FAKE privacy, FAKE markets, FAKE economic statistics, and a FAKE economy built on FAKE money created by the billions out of thin air. Canada (like most western countries) is a FAKE democracy where truth and morality have been driven out. There is nothing but FAKES as far as the eye can see.

Can verify that from my reading of the Sydney Morning Herald online, a once-proud Australian newspaper. Now trash. The last year they’ve featured 2 or 3 Trump-bashing stories every day; since his inauguration they’ve literally doubled down, it’s up to about 6. Truly amazing.

HSF… always appreciate it when you put your keyboard to blank screen (newer version of pen to paper…lol). It would be unwise, though, to think that the 5th column is going to take their tinker toys and go home. The MSM has morphed into the propaganda arm of the liberal left and the globalists. The concentration of power into 6 media conglomerates will look for ways to re-mobilize the crying snowflakes and the illegal aliens and the “You owe me crowd”…. I wish we were different and that we could/would stay a vigilant electorate of citizens and keep the pressure on until real changes can reverse our fates back towards a constitutional government. The U.S. way of life is designed to keep the masses pushed hard against the yoke of work and life with minds fatigued from their daily grind…. too tired to keep a sharp eye on the larger game being played around them and on them.
In June 2003, the FCC stripped America of the regulatory benefits against cross-ownership rules…. even though 2 million people wrote in opposing them taking such action. The corporations won the day and America lost a major battle in keeping it’s freedom of the press vibrant and disparate. Oh well, we can hope that the days ahead might bring a significant change is giving America back to the People. Thanks!

I have no illusions that they will continue on as they have in the past, they are like the folks in the Hoarders program who simply do not understand the depth of their mental illness and self-deception.

I’ve repeated the Napoleon quote until I’m blue in the fingertips, “Never interrupt your enemy when he/she/xe/xer is making a mistake”.

I do know this- you cannot fix a problem until you understand its cause. Clearly, they have not yet reached that point and so they will soldier on, double down, whatever it is they are doing until they either hit rock bottom and decide to make a change or implode completely.

I’m going to watch the Bye-Bye Birdie segment again, it never fails to make me smile.

Go back further into the Clinton years and virtual elimination of ownership limits in Broadcast media. The result is Ryan Seacrest wall to wall, coast to coast 24/7. Less than 6 companies own most of the decent signals in major markets. In many markets one company owns all the decent signals. Radio was hardest hit jobs-wise with a purge of employees that continues to the now. One station got hacked recently; apparently they were taking their programming from the ‘net and it took over 15 minutes for them to get the vulgar crap off their air. IheartRadio (polar opposite name), and Cumulus are the biggest owners. Iheart is partially owned by Bain Capital (Romney).
Don’t ever rely on Radio to provide emergency info, especially if you live in the boonies, because in smaller markets most everything is voice-tracked on a server or a combination of satellite programming with local commercial insertion…nobody’s home and if you’re lucky one or two employees are within 30 miles. And they’re probably responsible for 2 or 3 “Broadcasting pods” of stations.

Greetings,

All Trump needs to do is ban Big Pharma from advertising prescription medication on television and every single news channel would fold in an instant. Having worked for these people I can tell you that the pharmaceuticals are paying bribes for positive coverage. Think about it, the United States gobbles up 50% of the worlds pharmaceuticals with deaths by prescription drug accidents slowly climbing up to be the number one cause of death in the United States. People are taking so many pharmaceuticals that is has now polluted our drinking water with some rivers now so polluted with pharmaceuticals that fish and frogs have done such crazy things as spontaneously change sex.

They banned the advertisement of cigarettes and they can easily ban the running of these ads. Take away that source of income and it would drive these companies out of business. Watch for it to happen.

Opinions are like assholes – everybody has one. I include myself in this collective – an opinion with an asshole! So, in my humble opinion, everyone plays the “should have” game by “shoulding” on anything and everyone, including themselves.
Whats even worse is playing the expanded version of this game to include the “would have, could have, should have, games. The old saying of the road to hell is paved with good intentions, may well have said, the road to hell is paved with unsolicited advice!
The modern dilemma being that no one gives a shit, except for their own comfort. This has caused society to travel to it’s present fragmented state. As life is composed of an unbroken circle, made up of cycles, this situation must run it’s set course. My son asked me the other day why Trump seems to be in such a hurry.

Trump may only want to be President for one term. He may only get one term. Hopefully more, but… Who else will sustain momentum for real changes?

The popular vote outcome was a warning. If we want to achieve lasting change, we may only have 4 years to establish it. And it looks like the liberals have gone to the Republican school of obstructionism. We will need to act fast and push changes through forcefully, driving them deep into the roots of the system.

The mainstream media is not finished — far from it. We need to work against any rebound in their influence.

These asshats in media just still don’t get it. I just finished an article blasting Trump over his “temperament” when he told the Australian President that he was furious over a deal Oblama set up that forces us to take in 1400 Syrian refugees from Australia. The New York Times, totally misses what should have been the salient point of Trump – We are not happy that America is forced to take in the garbage you don’t want in your country. However, they chose to drone on about how Trump is not treating our “allies” with respect, and how that is “unprecedented” and he should respect and honor our “friends in other countries”. Is it any wonder that these rags have become almost completely irrelevant? Is it any wonder that our cities like Chicago have turned in to Afghanistan? Talk about missing the mark…Steve Bannon was right, they are the opposition party, and more succinctly, just the CLUELESS party…
