CAN’T A GUY JUST EAT HIS WINGS IN PEACE?

We made it to Wildwood, but I was already in a pissed off mood. They began roadwork on the Schuylkill Expressway between 10 am and 2 pm every day for the next few months. They put out a specific list of what they are doing by day. We had to leave for the shore at 10:30 due to some appointments earlier.

The government website said roving work crews would be working on the westbound lanes on Wednesday. Cool. We were going east. We cruise down 476 and get on the Schuylkill with no problems. Then gridlock. I turn on the traffic report and they report that the roving crew is surprisingly working on the eastbound lanes near Belmont Ave. That’s about 7 miles below where I’m stopped and moving at 5 miles per hour. After a tirade of expletives about the government I just stewed in silence as Avalon took a nap.

It took an hour and 20 minutes to reach the roving “work” crew blocking the right lane of a two lane highway. We passed the crew. It consisted of 10 government drones walking in the right lane and doing absofuckinglutely nothing. They were strolling along, oblivious to the havoc they caused, while assessing how they can maximize the pain on motorists over the next few months. It took us almost three hours to get to Wildwood, when it should have taken less than two hours.

Then we arrived to a filthy condo, after my son and his friends had spent senior week doing whatever. No serious damage, but a lot of cleaning to do. Eventually we settled in and relaxed on the deck with a drink. It was sunny and warm. We took a walk on the boardwalk and saw that Capt n Jacks had a Wings and Yuengs special from 8:00 pm to close – 49 cent wings and $3 Yuengling beers. We figured that would be our destination later to watch the sunset from the upper open air deck.

At about 7:30 we decided to take a long walk on the boardwalk and then stop at Capt n Jacks on the way back. For some reason I decided to check the weather online and saw the radar showing a pretty strong line of storms headed our way. It looked like we had about an hour before they arrived. So, we had a nice brisk walk and about 8:30 it started to drizzle as we arrived at Capt n Jacks. They seated us upstairs. We were under cover, but the sides were all open. We ordered our wings and drinks and prepared to watch the cool thunderstorm moving rapidly towards us.

We saw flashes of lightning in the distance as the ominous clouds approached. We started wondering whether the wind blown rain might reach us, even though we were covered overhead. Within a few minutes, this is what we saw.

Avalon said she thought we were in Kansas at the beginning of the Wizard of Oz. We didn’t have to wonder about the rain reaching us for much longer. Gale force winds started blowing chairs over and the torrential rain came in sideways. We had to make a run for it. There were no more tables inside, so we hunkered down at the bar, which was on the other side of the deck. The rain was still reaching us, but it was bearable. And then the waitress delivered our wings.

The guy next to us was looking at his phone and reporting there was a tornado warning for our area. The winds were blowing at 60 mph and the rain was relentless. I was starving, since I only had a salad at lunch. As the world seemed to be ending, I was wading into those wings like a ravenous hyena. Sometimes you have to set priorities. I weighed the odds of dying in a tornado versus my hunger and a cheap wings deal. I chose the wings and beer. The rain kept pouring down, so we kept ordering more drinks. By the time it all stopped at 9:45 we were feeling pretty good.

Here are some other pictures taken as the storm approached.

Yeah I have set in that exact traffic for that exact reason. It is never pleasant.

How would you feel if traffic was blocked in the middle of the hood by a few hundred Black Lives Matter protesters and then local ferals start riding their bicycles onto the freeway? That’s what happened after the Yanez/Castile verdict here.

Riding “their” bicycles? Oh yeah possession and all.

Admin- I have had the same problem my whole life, a HUGE dark cloud follows me where ever I go. Try to enjoy your vacay anyway.

Shows how easy it would be for the gov’t to shut down travel in this country. Where you are is where you’ll stay in just such a scenario.
Blessings:-}

Clearly it’s Russia’s doing.

Cool pics Jim. Wish I was there with you. Burnt out and exhausted… a pint (or two or three) near the beach would fix a few things! 🙂

Fabulous pictures!!!

When it comes to the beauty of nature I am a “cloud” guy.

Thanks for sharing. I am a little jealous of the beer and wings as well.

You didn’t really believe a government website would be accurate did you ??? Anyways I know the frustration of sitting in traffic .I usually start talking to little bb about world affairs just to pass the time.He looks at me like I’m the smartest human he has ever seen. Never underestimate the opinion of a good pet.

There’s no way a little thing like a tornado would get me away from my wings. Have fun out there !

Next time pack your Oz red shoes to make the journey home a “take out” vacation….sorry, but I’m on the 12 fast before blood work is done…..those wings sound great.

ADMIN – Really cool pics of the “wall” clouds! If I was there that would surely send the hairs on the back of my neck up. Pretty ominous sign of trouble. But then again, a few beers and wings under my belt and “no worries” Enjoy the vacation cus you know the expressway is gonna be real bad going back.
Now I’m off to the gold fields for the rest of the day……..

I have to say pretty cool pictures. Seeing those clouds would have me running for the hills. But not you Admin. No sir! The Leader of the shit monkeys stares down death. Chooses cheap beer and wings over possible demise at the hands of an indiscriminant tornado courtesy of the evil Vlad.

Anyways enjoy the vacation and don’t let the traffic get you down.

Yours in Odin,

Greetings,

Gridlock!!!! Welcome to my world ’cause gridlock is a 24/7 thing here in and around Los Angeles. The roads are so bad here that no one has to close a lane or do anything out of the ordinary to bring suffering to millions.

I’m always told that without government there would be no roads and it is at that time that I remind people of the 405 freeway. Roads, the DMV, healthcare, education & retirement – the government 100% fails at anything it attempts.

Enjoy the beach.

Those clouds, those black ominous clouds.
Good thing there were seats at the bar.
Closer to the cocktails and beer as well!
You’ll have fun somehow! Relax.

Definitely a wall cloud. Bad things can come from clouds like that.

Source: lived in flyover country for decades. A cloud like that right overhead would be enough to send you directly to the basement.

I was mentally composing a snarky comment about rich aholes with beach houses when I got to the part about the wings and beer.
A man who puts his life on the line for wings and beer is my kind of guy.
This made me think of a good question of the day.

If you were having a beer and a life or death emergency occurred, which would you save, the beer or the wife?(Saying you would shotgun the beer and carry your wife out doesn’t count.)

If those roadway workers send this article to their supervisor they will be in for a commendation.

I used to tell my offspring that vacations are like mini-lifetimes. They have a beginning, a middle, and an end; with the highs and lows occurring very rapidly, and greatly time-compressed, in between.

I woke up at 2:30 AM (my time) this morning to the sound of the surf, drove to the airport in the dark, almost missed one of my turns and narrowly missed getting rear-ended by a truck; had my laptop tested for explosive materials by TSA Smurfs also offering upper thigh massages; discovered that the airline changed our seating assignments that I paid for prior, before I was informed of the flight delay; was offered a $2 bottled water by a stewardess who worked for the airline that I paid hundreds of dollars to separate my seating assignment away from my loved ones and make us all late; gave hugs and heard sweet goodbyes; drove home tired and a little sad, but grateful for for those coming back with me in the car and for all of the new memories.

Seventeen hours ago really does feel like a lifetime as I type this now.

Priceless.

Great story. Classic Quinn intro, “We made it to Wildwood, but I was already in a pissed off mood.” But some wings, a few beers, a little live rock and roll, maybe go home and bang the old lady. Life ain’t so bad. Tornadoes? Bring them on.
