IIRC, the GOP was founded by people who didn’t like the prospect of competing with slave labor and they weren’t starry-eyed idealist proto-SJWs who had a special love for blacks. Abolitionists like the lunatic John Brown (and his wealthy Secret Six backers) were a fringe element until a lot of blood had been shed in the war.
