Pets vs. kids

by Lee Travis of Defiant Thinking

The definition of life is, surprisingly, not a settled issue. But one commonly-agreed to component is the fact that living things reproduce.

In humans, there is a strong natural instinct and drive to have children. It’s one of the main reasons – perhaps even the primary reason – that societies around the world have set up a culture based on marriage (and usually monogamy). At a biological level, “baby fever” is a real thing, not only for women but also for men.

As strong as this natural desire is, we can and do push against it. We’re not salmon, hard-wired to swim upstream to an ancestral nesting area; we can generally decide whether, where, when, and with whom to have kids.

And in America, we’re more and more frequently deciding not to procreate at all. While we are one of the most affluent countries in the world, our fertility rate of 1.87 births/woman is below both the world average (2.42) and the estimated replacement rate (2.1).

There are undoubtedly lots of reasons for that, ranging from changes in cultural standards to the ever-increasing cost of living and, in particular, cost of raising a child. And let’s not forget the economic dampeners of declining social mobility and record economic inequality.

But what’s clear is that biological mandate to have kids hasn’t left us, as evidenced by the growth in pet ownership among child-bearing-age Millennials.

Pets act as an economic substitute for children: They fill a similar need (shared love, and the feeling of taking care of a smaller being) but at a much lower level of cost and commitment. And the research says that more and more young people are opting for the path of least commitment:

As The Washington Post notes:

Three-fourths of Americans in their 30s have dogs, while 51 percent have cats, according to a survey released by research firm Mintel. That compares to 50 percent of the overall population with dogs, and 35 percent with cats.

The findings come at a time when millennials, roughly defined as the generation born between 1980 and 2000, are half as likely to be married or living with a partner than they were 50 years ago. They are also delaying parenthood and demanding flexible work arrangements — all of which, researchers say, has translated to higher rates of pet ownership.

And it’s not just about the companionship: We’re humanizing and indulging our pets just like we would otherwise do with our children:

A majority of millennials — 76 percent — said they are more likely to “splurge” on their pets than for themselves, including for expensive treats (44 percent) or a custom bed (38 percent), according to a 2014 study by Wakefield Research. By comparison, 50 percent of Baby Boomers — those born between 1946 and 1964 –– said they would do so.

Millennials were also twice as likely than Baby Boomers to buy clothing for their pets, a phenomenon Richter chalks up to the prevalence of social media.

While these numbers are for the US, the phenomenon of lower birth rates – of young people choosing not to have children (and often choosing not to marry) is widespread among more affluent countries, most or all of which are seeing stagnant or declining standards of living. I wouldn’t be surprised to see pet ownership skyrocketing in countries like Japan, which has one of the lowest rates of fertility in the world, at 1.41.

But while they may fill some personal needs, of course those pets aren’t children. And while this trend may be completely justified on an individual level, it spells disaster for a country that plans on a growing younger generation to accommodate the needs of its elders.

I am told there are only two groups growing in the world today. Muslims and Conservative Christians. I guess after every other group craps out we have the “big one” or “Le Dernier Combat.”

Two comments heavily influenced by the teachings of El Doggy:

The purpose of women is breeding. Women are guilty of dereliction of duty, preferring to spend their time in beauty salons and taking selfies or posting pics of their ass in social media.

Such women should be incarcerated and artificially inseminated to insure the species while science works on replacing their uteri with more efficient methods than dinner and a movie followed by Bill Cosby’s knockout drinks.

Pets are not kids, nowadays helicopter parents want to send their pets to special obedience schools and engage in pet-shaming the poor animals when they fail at being the perfect trans-species child.

Whoever has a pet dog or cat with a human name and treats the animal with the love a child deserves, feeding this animal steaks and burgers and the roast chicken from Sam’s Club, shame on you. One day you will eat that pet in a pinch when the world collapses. Or it will eat you and you will deserve it for aborting your kids so your fucking worthless (unless your sterile) wife won’t lose her fucking arm-candy figure.

Man-up, get a boner and stop sucking the jelly out of donuts, you have a real life donut hole there, do something, asshole! Let’s get a batch of white babies started and stop whining that whites are going extinct.

No fault divorce, man not getting kids (except on weekends), man paying for house he does not live in, man paying wife alimony, man splitting net worth, man paying for x-wife lawyer.

Generally, the legal system is slanted to the female.

In my case, it’s not worth a 50% chance (a coin flip) for me to risk my future financial well being and sanity to have children.

I’ll just get a dog, feed it chicken and steak, and fornicate with the divorcees until they prove they are no longer worth my effort.

It may have to go beyond that. I wouldn’t be surprised if the South Korean or Japanese governments go to in vitro fertilization and womb implants for older women willing to bear a child or, if possible, an artificial womb to create more babies if real women won’t.

The reason I believe these governments will do it is because the cultural constraints are less. South Korea was the first to ‘clone’ animals and religious prohibitions are weak in both nations. They are also growing old. More than 25% of the Japanese population is over 65.

As to dogs. I’m 65 and growing up a dog was something parents got for their male offspring. Oh there were a few ankle biting toy dogs around but they were for SPINSTERS. Married women did not want or need a shit machine to take care of. The dog was a boys companion and something for him to be responsible for and love- sort of like a future wife.

As a parent, not much offends me more than childless people who call their pet animals their “children!” Oh I have no problem with pets, I have several today, but they are NOT CHILDREN.

These people need a good constant mocking, and a 1000% tax on their pet supplies, the entire revenue to go to people who should be having kids and are willing to do so, but have trouble affording it when DINKs and the like hamper them from raising children.

Come on , what’s with all this nonsense.I would argue pets costs less and are easier to maintain then children. They also make excellent companionship on the road.I talk to little bb except when he is sleeping which is about 16-18 hours a day.I wouldn’t leave home without him.I feed him tuna and salmon which I buy at Sam’s Club .( Take that El Coyote )He get at least one bubble bath a week .He is happy and smells like Roses. He is not a child but he is my traveling companion. Now bug off all you pet haters.

They also won’t take you to the hospital if you’re sick, or make you chicken soup, or lend you money if you need it. Yes, kids are more trouble, but I think it’s entirely possible they’re WORTH IT. Children are the future of humanity, pets are the future of more pets needing homes.

Unfortunately, EC, people cannot be forced into responsibility. Your plan to force women to have children would penalize them both; the women would be forced into an 18 – 24 year commitment to raise children they did not want, and force the children to endure a loveless childhood (is there a better definition of living hell?).
This may be a form of natural selection whereby those not capable of competent parenthood select themselves out of the gene pool.
We do need to institute a capital punishment penalty for anyone who TEACHES that childrearing is less important than ANYTHING else, Marxism in general and intersectional fourth-wave feminism in particular. Weeding those mental midgets out of the gene pool would surely be a benefit to the race.

jimbo, that would be all the Madonnas and Angelinas that prefer to adopt rather than lose their movie star figure. They preempt complaints by adopting children from poor countries to make a more compelling argument that their selfishness is actually unselfish sacrifice to do good for poor peeps. Brain-dead millennials gather from that example that having kids of their own is selfish, so they take a cheap route to adoption; adopt a pet, like fucking animals are somehow homeless orphans.

As for my incarcerate and inseminate plan, I was imagining a prison similar to one posted here, a rehabilitation center where all cells were guarded from a central tower. If you let them decorate their cells and filled the courtyard with salons and clubs, they’d never guess they were in a breeding reservation.

Rin Tin Tin, Lassie and Old Yeller did not have women as their master. Dogs were for boys.
Girls adored much larger more powerful animals. Horses to be precise.

The sexual connection was unmistakable. Females wanted a large powerful beast who could take care of them and for this they gave it their love- a husband. A boy’s dog was an animal he could love but also be responsible for- a wife.

Girls also like horses because the saddle stimulates them and they like having a huge thing between their legs they can boss around. Country girls frequently ride their man like a horse: walk awhile to loosen up, trot awhile to stimulate and enjoy all the senses, then gallop because they always like to finish first, then walk awhile back to the barn to enjoy the cooling breeze and dry the sweat. In the USAF, I met and loved a Hooser girl who’d say: “squish the talk, clozen ze door, outenze light”; I tried to rope her but she always slipped the knot; she would have made a fine transplanted Southern Belle.

I am almost glad that the stupid people are not bringing forth offspring, let them dress up a dog and stroll it around in a baby stroller. We can look upon them same as the crazy aunt you just overlook when she tells you all about her 20 cats that she calls her “babies”. At least she has an excuse….she is crazy.

I guess all of these nutballs don’t care that their bloodline stops with a dog?

I was in Santa Monica and noticed a poster of a white man with a mulatta. And a black man with a white woman. Then I looked at the people and I saw real-life couples like this. What is going on?

I thought of the time when I tried to romance a white girl in high school. It took me a long time to turn my sense of failure into laughter. Years later, I finally laughed at myself. (I completely identify with Luke when he forces a smile as his mom laughs at him for trying so hard with the fancy girlfriend he had.) Then I see this sight and I’m disgusted at myself again.

I think the failure to have children is only a symptom of the ailing relationships between men and women. Address the cause and the symptoms will take care of themselves.
