With DACA Decision Trump Demonstrates He Is Learning The Ropes

Guest Post by Kevin Lynn

“President Donald Trump has decided to end the Obama-era program that grants work permits to undocumented immigrants who arrived in the country as children, according to two sources familiar with his thinking. Senior White House aides huddled Sunday afternoon to discuss the rollout of a decision likely to ignite a political firestorm — and fulfill one of the president’s core campaign promises.”

Elana Johnson, Politico, September 3, 2017

Yes, it will probably ignite a firestorm but Trump will not be the one burning, rather it will be a conflagration over the capitol building. In a clever move, Trump put the onus on where it should have always been when it comes to writing immigration legislation – on Congress.

The Deferred Action Against Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program was introduced as an executive order by President Obama in June 2012, when it should have been left to Congress to write the legislation and send it to him to sign or veto. However, with a Republican House dedicated to deadlocking the White House on any matter, and  fueled by executive hubris, the President overstepped his authority.

This decision by the President is a surprising display of clear mindedness: Trump could have simply rescinded Obama’s order, but he opted to let it expire and put it on Congress to write immigration legislation. Moreover, he essentially placed a six-month moratorium on deportations for Dreamers while Congress works on a bill. This demonstrated both guile and compassion. Trump will also avoid a tense game of chicken with several republican states, including Texas, which pledged to fight DACA tooth and nail in court.

Some, such as Senators Dick Durbin and Lindsay Graham, have proposed that the DACA immigrants should be granted citizenship in exchange for a bill restricting immigration, such as the Raise Act, but that remains to be seen. The challenge now is for congress to come up with a bill or bills that will reform immigration in a way that puts citizens first and eventually works well for immigrants and native born alike.

Below is an overview of several bill currently in the House and Senate that may make it to the president for signature in whole or in part:

H.R.392 – Fairness for High-Skilled Immigrants Act of 2017

Drafted by Rep. Jason Chaffetz (UT), this bill amends the Immigration and Nationality Act to: (1) eliminate the per country numerical limitation for employment-based immigrants, and (2) increase the per country numerical limitation for family based immigrants from 7% to 15% of the total number of family-sponsored visas.

H.R.2724 – Border Security and Immigration Enforcement Act of 2017

Introduced by Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (CA), in order to amend the Immigration and Nationality Act to replace the diversity visa program with a new program under which an immigrant visa can be obtained by paying a fee of $1,000,000, and for other purposes.

H.R.2751 – U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Authorization Act

Introduced by Rep. Clay Higgins (LA), to amend the Homeland Security Act of 2002 to establish U.S. Immigration and Customs and Enforcement, and for other purposes.

H.R.2752 – United States Citizenship and Immigration Services Authorization Act

Also drafted by Rep. Higgins, To amend the Homeland Security Act of 2002 to establish United States Citizenship and Immigration Services, and for other purposes.

H.R.3647 – To amend the Immigration and Nationality Act comprehensively to reform immigration law, and for other purposes.

Introduced by Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (TX), the details of which are currently limited.

S.1757 – A bill to strengthen border security, increase resources for enforcement of immigration laws, and for other purposes.

By Rep. John Cornyn (TX).

S.1615 – Dream Act of 2017

Introduced by Sen. Lindsay Graham (SC) and sponsored by Sen. Durbin (IL), Sen. Jeff Flake (AZ), and Sen. Chuck Schumer (NY), the bill would authorize the cancellation of removal and adjustment of status of certain individuals who are long-term United States residents and who entered the United States as children, and for other purposes. This is in reference to the recipients of the DACA program, who have previously been referred to as the “Dreamers.”

S.1560 – Integrity in Border and Immigration Enforcement Act

Drafted by Sen. Dick Durbin (IL), to ensure the integrity of border and immigration enforcement efforts by requiring U.S. Customs and Border Protection and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement to administer law enforcement polygraph examinations to all applicants for law enforcement positions and to require post-hire polygraph examinations for law enforcement personnel as part of periodic reinvestigations.

S.354 – Reforming American Immigration for Strong Employment

Co-sponsored by Republican senators Tom Cotton and David Perdue, the bill seeks to reduce levels of legal immigration to the United States by 50% by halving the number of green cards issued. The bill would also impose a cap of 50,000 refugee admissions a year and would end the visa diversity lottery.

We strongly urge our readers to research these bills and learn whether or not your representatives support or oppose these pieces of legislation. An important column of our democracy is to remain informed on the actions of our government, and to ensure that our representatives are true to their word.

Thanks for the run down. Personally I’d prefer that all immigration stop for 10+ years and let us catch our breath.

In reality, most of what we needed to stop all this illegal immigration, is for the President to say we will not tolerate illegals. That statement alone, put a halt to a lot of illegal immigration.

The ending of the ‘Dreamers’ (we have stopped accepting applications) sends another loud message. Hope it scares them back to Mexico.

It’s amazing – how little it takes to stop bad behavior. The Magic Negro did more to damage this country than any other president.

Dutchman, I would also suggest no welfare of any kind for immigrants. That’s one thing that lures them in.

Texas would have fought for the dreamers ? I just don’t understand why the state political system would be so willing to give the state of Texas away.If Texas flips all hope is lost.

I quit watching SNL years ago because it is trash but the link from above is a skit where they are actually making fun of zero regarding the DACA EO. I would never have imagined them making fun of the exalted one. The “bill” even says “Ah, ya black ass!”

One commenter is comparing DACA with the Emancipation Proclamation and anyone who disagrees with it is a member of the special K. Good gravy there are a lot of dumbed down sheeple.

#Illegals’DreamsMatter..American dreams mean nothing. Laws govern us, not feewins. Obama’s DACA was a violation of American immigration laws.

http://www.breitbart.com/big-government/2017/09/05/father-murdered-florida-mother-reveals-suspected-killer-daca-recipient/

And Obama claims that these “Dreamers” (what a convenient name) “start new businesses, staff our labs, and serve in our military…”

Shutting down DACA is a feel good story of the day candidate.

Clarence Anglin, John Anglin, and Frank Morris, escaped from Alcatraz. If they survived, and there is some evidence that they did, they would have been locked up if found no matter how long they were free. Why, because they broke the law. Illegal immigrants also broke the law breaking into the US and it doesn’t matter how long they have been here. So how is this any different?

It is no different. Also, as someone once said; if your parents fail to pay the landlord his due rent and you are then evicted, whose fault is that? Your parents or the landlord? Same with a country, whose fault is it when you and your illegal parents are caught and subsequently deported? Your parents fault or the country’s fault?

This isn’t some game where if you safely cross the border you get to shout :”King me” and be crowned with multiple benefits courtesy of the American taxpayer. I’ve got absolutely nothing against legal immigration, and those that have legally immigrated should also stand against illegal immigration.

Actually, Obama is to blame for a lot because if he had not signed the DACA E.O., those kids would have gone back a long time ago and they would have known their own countries instead of not knowing them. Meaning, they grew up in the U.S. instead of their own country because Obama let them stay, which made the situation worse.

I’ve got absolutely nothing against legal immigration …

Then you are part of the problem. With a handful of exceptions, the U.S. doesn’t need any more immigrants. This isn’t the 19th century when Chinese coolies built railroad tracks and Poles worked in the steel mills. With 320 million people and counting, we are already overpopulated.

Each new immigrant (legal or illegal, doesn’t matter) puts an added burden on our natural resources and infrastructure. In return we get … uh … more taco stands.

Just because something can be made legal according to a Congress disconnected from the citizens doesn’t make it smart.

Barry wrote the check, we didn’t……let his ass cash it. There must be more room in his DC Kalorama digs along with his mother in law and his ersatz mother Valerie Jarrett squatting in the basement……

Can you imagine life in that crib with all those women….the wife, the daughters, mother in law and Valerie Jarrett…..

FWIW, has anyone noticed that all those Mexican’s marching in the streets with Mexican flags during and before the campaign seem to have suddenly become true blooded Americans carrying American flags to show how patriotic they are since Trump’s DACA announcement?

That their signs are now printed in English instead of Spanish?

At least the ones we see pictured in articles screaming about Trump and supporting DACA.

I personally don’t care if they make some accommodation for the children who were born here of illegal parents, and I believe the wall is huge expense for a relatively little return. Just enforcing the current laws has caused immigration to decline, and let’s face it, the really determined people will not be stopped by a wall. I am more concerned with the process in reaching a resolution, regardless of what that is.

That’s I am glad that Trump is forcing Congress to to do their job for a change. We’re not in the age of Caesars yet, no matter how Obama acted, and it is Congress’ job to send actual legislation to the president to be signed or vetoed. At least everyone is on record then. Let them horse trade, compromise, or whatever, because that is how the process is supposed to work. But quit screwing around. The other thing I’m happy to see Trump doing is not letting his own party off the hook. They were full of big talk about health care, tax reform, and immigration when they were out of power, but that was then. If they fail to execute now, they should be driven out of office.

If these illegal aliens are so tremendously wonderful and useful, why are the Progressives acting to keep them from Mexico? Do they hate the Mexican people so much, that depriving Mexico of their (apparently) best and brightest is a goal of the Left?

If these ‘Dreamers’ are so good for America, they could only be a thousand times more beneficial for Mexico – a country that clearly needs the things we are being told the ‘Dreamers’ will provide America, far more than America ever will. It’s an act of unmitigated evil to keep the Dreamers in America, when their homeland obviously needs them so badly.

This being the case, why aren’t the progressive people pushing diversity in America, Canada, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa, moving to non-white countries themselves – to take the glories of Diversity™ directly to their beloved brown people?

I can only conclude that the Left are horrible racists that deeply hate brown people. If they didn’t, the Left would collectively and permanently leave America for the non-white parts of the world, and they would do it today.

Brilliant move by Trump to put this in Congress’ lap to fix. He knows it will languish and nothing will be passed. Those asshat RINOs who berated Obummer for acting outside the constitution when he decreed DACA by Executive Order are now criticizing Trump? Bunch of hypocrites!
