While he deserves much worse, execution for treason is what he should get. Why give him a prison term and we taxpayers have to pay to feed and house him for the rest of his miserable life? How about a helicopter drop into the middle of one of those raging fires in California?

Treat him as a deserter. Preferably not “in time of war” since I’m not entirely sure the Iraq or Afghani wars count due to their somewhat one-sided nature. Its not like Iraq or Afghanistan are threatening us in anyway, they are purely political wars.
Wikipedia states the maximum amount of time a US soldier has served in prison due to desertion is 24 months.
So give him 24 months, don’t make a big deal out of it, and send him on his way.
But desertion is a big deal, a really big one.

I am an Army brat, raised in the military until I was in high school. Treason means a certain thing to me and he fits the definition to a “T” including his current piss-poor attitude. Current law aside, I say “hang’em high!”

Ten to Twenty in a Federal maximum security prison ought to be enough. I doubt he will do well in prison an will probably not survive his sentence so there is no reason to formally execute him. Just put him in general population and the inmates will know what to do with him.
Not so much. He would go to military prison. Sadistic guards will make his life hell, but he’s not likely to be attacked by other inmates. Military discipline and all that.
In civilian prison he would just join a gang like everyone else and get by. Probably a muslim-leaning gang given all the factors. Whatever.
If you believe someone deserves XYZ punishment, you should have the stomach to either administer it yourself or be on record supporting the use of your tax dollars to administer it. The sad thing about this situation is no one can “know” what they have merely been told. Can anyone remember the Tillman situation, hell look at the load of bilge emanating from Vegas right now. Spare me your eyewitnesses. Grunts have a saying, “first to go, last to know.”
I have personally been involved in a situation much like this. Geez! Was that a half century ago? Seems like just last night! The men on the ground KNOW very little beyond who made it and who did not. To them what else matters?
I greatly admire many of the incredible thinkers who create and post on this site but I am taken aback by the visceral response to this incident. A live snake up his bum? Holy Freuduski! I’ll bet if he thought about it a bit somebody would like to have that one back! While we pause in the sexual innuendo aisle, consider that if this young man was ‘confused’ regarding his gender he would, as was Ms Manning, have likely been pardoned by the last “president.”
Courts Martial do not serve the cause of truth or justice. The evidence, and testimony are created from whole cloth by the commander who oversees the process. The strict hierarchy in the military specifies whose wishes are respected and who gets the last word.
Having ‘murdered’ my television a couple of decades ago I have to admit that I am not current on all the juicy detail of this case. I does, however, have a familiar odor about it.
