Into the Cold and Dark

Guest Post by Jim Kunstler

It amuses me that the nation is so caught up in the sexual mischief of a single Hollywood producer when the nation as a whole is getting fucked sideways and upside down by its own political caretakers.

Behind all the smoke, mirrors, Trump bluster, Schumer fog, and media mystification about the vaudeville act known as The Budget and The Tax Cut, both political parties are fighting for their lives and the Deep State knows that it is being thrown overboard to drown in red ink. There’s really no way out of the financial conundrum that dogs the republic and something’s got to give.

Many of us have been waiting for these tensions to express themselves by blowing up the artificially levitated stock markets. For about a year, absolutely nothing has thwarted their supernatural ascent, including the threat of World War Three, leading some observers to believe that they have been rigged to perfection. Well, the algo-bots might be pretty fine-tuned, and the central bank inputs of fresh “liquidity” pretty much assured, but for all that, these markets are still human artifacts and Murphy’s Law still lurks out there in the gloaming with its cohorts, the diminishing returns of technology (a.k.a. “Blowback”), and the demon of unintended consequences.

Many, including yours truly, have expected the distortions and perversions on the money side of life to express themselves in money itself: the dollar. So far, it has only wobbled down about ten percent. This is due perhaps to the calibrated disinformation known as “forward guidance” issued by this country’s central bank, the Federal Reserve, which has been threatening — pretty idly so far — to raise interest rates and shrink down its vault of hoarded securities — a lot of it janky paper left over from the misadventures of 2007-2009.

I guess the lesson is that when you have a pervasively false and corrupt financial system, it is always subject to a little additional accounting fraud — until it’s not. And the next thing you know, you’re sitting in the rubble of what used to be your civilization.

The ever more immiserated schnooks who make up the former middle-class know that their lives are crumbling, and may feel that they’re subject to the utterly overwhelming forces of a cruel destiny generated by a leviathan state that hates and despises them. And of course that is exactly why they turned to the Golden Golem of Greatness for salvation.

Alas, Mr. Trump has not constructed a coherent strategy for defeating the colossus of fakery that drives the nation ever-deeper toward the cold and dark. He has a talent for distraction and disruption, though, and so far that gave cover to a whole lot of other people in power who have been able to stand around with their hands in their pockets doing nothing about the sinking state of the nation.

Now, the vaudeville act is coming to a spectacular conclusion as the trappings of Halloween go back in the closet and the pulsating, LED-studded Santas go up on the rooftops. Every ceremony of American life seems drained of meaning now, including the machinations of government over the budget and taxes. The revolution to come out of this frozen swamp of irresponsibility will be the messiest and most incoherent in world history. Nobody will have any idea what is going on outside the geo-storm of failure.

About the only thing one can say for sure is that the American life which emerges from this maelstrom will not look a whole lot like what we’re living in today. I remain serenely convinced that when it finally passes, the air will be fresh again and the sun will shine, and a lot more people will know what is real and what is not.

The first paragraph started it off so well. I thought this guy was finally going to take the gloves off and say wtf he thinks is really going on. Then it just kind of meandered into the blabberzone.

Mr. K, the sun is shining and the air is fresh now, if your take your eyes off the spectacle. You are quite correct; the whole deal is fixed, and almost no one knows how to fix it, even if they were so inclined. One wants to be a good person, of course, but one also to make a living in a world that has gone astray, caught up in a consumption ethic that supersedes every other consideration. Quality no longer exists, because that is strictly a matter of opinion. Only what can be measured, and counted, and consumed is real. Ethics are merely sentiments, and variable with the situation. Is that an exaggeration? I don’t think so.

I know what you know, and I have the same solutions, which is to say, none that people want to hear. I have literally nothing to say to people, many baby boomers my age, who are consumed with getting that new app on their smart place, traveling to that place, and booking a table at the new fusion restaurant. These are literally their only concerns in life. Nor am I interested in what should be done. Everyone knows what should be done. If obese people lost all the weight and smokers quit smoking, hospitals would literally empty out and medical costs plummet. Like that solution? I have a dozens more, all guaranteed to work, all that would be rejected as impractical. Better just to give people colorful, informative pamphlets that will be tossed on the way out the door. But at least they will be “empowered.”

I too was wrong because I believed the economy would have blown by now. I’ve been wrong before. I do think what must fail eventually will fail, and I’m prepared to deal with it the best I can. Until then, I will enjoy the warmth of the sun, which costs me not, and the gentle breeze of an evening, and contemplate the Real. Just in case, you know, the revolution doesn’t come in time.

Not with a bang, but with a whimper…..Perhaps the Silents and Boomers will, quite unjustly, pass away before the follies of the last 100 years come home to roost…

If the financial system fails what is real will be the demise of many millions. Retirees whose SS security checks will buy little to nothing, the urban underclass whose EBT cards will not be redeemed for valuable foodstuffs and all the rest who are crammed into their mortgaged or rented homes paid for with jobs of no intrinsic value.

Where we are and where we think we are seem to be moving farther and farther apart. I have given up trying to make sense of it, the worse off we are, the better the economy looks, so I’m just sitting back and enjoying the sunshine as long as it lasts.
I would like to read a novel about our not too distant future where our unemployment is at 2%, the Dow is over 100,000,000 and yet only 10% of the available working adults are doing 80 hour work weeks to support the 250 million who are on food stamps. Cars are no longer needed because there are no stores to shop at, as they went out of business years ago; the only traffic outside are Amazon vehicles delivering everything from food and alcohol to clothes and entertainment items for private amusements.
Vacations are now spent at virtual reality rooms, where beautiful panoramas of the now closed national parks can be viewed on demand. You can tell others how beautiful it was on Facebook and Twitter.
It’s better to stay inside anyway, as the terrorist threat is now double double plus plus super red critical, with an imminent attack to occur any day now.
All in all, life is good, but watch out, as our national debt is now over 990 centillion centillion dollars and may cause a market crash, as no one knows what comes after centillion*.
*Look it up

Anything’s got to be better than a hole drilled into a stolen Sears plaster mannequin.

Or so I’ve heard.

I had the perfect comment for this article but I posted it on The Big Why. It was a premature ejaculation, oops.

No, sorry, no sunny sky. Bizarre white streaks morphing into
smeary “clouds” emitted by airplanes all during my 3+ car drive=
a milky sky with the blue obscured. Others see this and shrug.
Is the attitude correlated to the masses fatness? Stupidity?
Devil may care? Or, the peoples obsession with texting and
texting and texting back in reply?

I feel sour about the blue sky (and air) being altered. Who cares
about the financial collapse inevitability? Shite is being sprayed
on us and we get to breathe it. Isn’t that a topic worthy of discussion?

James Howard! do you hear me? Anyone? Well, most will get used to
this spraying, (have to text constantly you know) and then they will
spray pneumonia plague on us (air borne) and we’ll be dead in 3
days. This is a REAL potential emergency. Unlike the phony ISIS
threats.
