Since the attack, my husband Rand Paul hasn’t taken a single breath without pain

Guest Post by Kelly Paul

The average person takes 20,000 breaths a day. Since November 3, my husband, Rand Paul, has not taken a single one without pain. He has not had a single night’s sleep uninterrupted by long periods of difficult breathing or excruciating coughing.

As his wife, I have been distraught over seeing him suffer like this. There have been several nights where I had my hand on my phone ready to call 911 when his breathing became so labored it was terrifying.

Despite this, he refused to give in to the pain and was determined to fly back to Washington last week to do his job. As we walked through the airport returning from D.C., he was shivering with a 102.5 fever, and the next morning his internist diagnosed pneumonia in his damaged lung.

It is incredibly hurtful that some news outlets have victimized Rand a second time as he struggles to recover, delighting in hateful headlines like “Not A Perfect Neighbor,” and concocting theories about an “ongoing dispute,” based on nothing more than speculation from an attention-seeking person with no knowledge of anything to do with us.

The fact is, neither Rand nor I have spoken to the attacker in 10 years (since before his wife and children moved away) other than a casual wave from the car. Nobody in our family has, nor have we communicated with anyone in his family. With Rand’s travel to D.C. in the last seven years, he has rarely seen this man at all.

The only “dispute” existed solely in the attacker’s troubled mind, until, on a beautiful autumn day, he ran down the hill on our property and slammed his body into Rand’s lower back as he stood facing away, wearing noise canceling headphones to protect his ears from the lawnmower.

This was not a “scuffle,” a “fight” or an “altercation,” as many in the media falsely describe it. It was a deliberate, blindside attack. The impact left Rand with six broken ribs, three displaced, pleural effusion and now pneumonia. This has been a terrible experience; made worse by the media’s gleeful attempts to blame Rand for it, ridiculing him for everything from mowing his own lawn to composting.

This Thanksgiving weekend, instead of playing golf with his sons or enjoying our annual touch football game with family and neighbors, Rand will be in pain. But we will still be grateful for the love of our large and supportive family, and for the encouragement and prayers of hundreds of kind and thoughtful people during these last weeks.

Editor’s note: Rene Albert Boucher, a neighbor of Senator Paul’s, has pleaded not guilty to misdemeanor assault. His attorney Matthew Baker told CNN in an interview for a story published November 9 that Boucher, an anesthesiologist, regrets the incident. “If he had to do it over again, I can assure you it would have been handled much more diplomatically,” Baker said. The attorney, asked about the motive, said “we should believe” a neighbor, Jim Skaggs, who told CNN there has been a “long-running disagreement” over property maintenance. Baker also said, in a statement, “We sincerely hope that Sen. Paul is doing well and that these two gentlemen can get back to being neighbors as quickly as possible.”

What has happened to the attacker? Any arrest made?

WTF do they mean “misdemeanor assault”?
The neighbor’s credentials alone make it attempted murder!
Where’s the “hangin’ judge” when we need him?
Don’t unpunished crimes embolden even more criminals?

Zarathustra

I understand completely. I broke a couple of ribs in a fall a few years back. Like me I’m sure he has been prescribed hydrocodone for pain. Unfortunately these days it is laced with so much acetominaphen that if you take enough to actually have an effect on the pain, the acetominaphen will destroy your liver. You can thank the war on drugs for that.

It’s hell to cough or sneeze with broken ribs, but hiccups are pure agony!

It’s a damned shame… it hadn’t been Paul Ryan.

I have had pneumonia and two broke ribs just last year .The pain in the rids can be mind bending .A couple times I thought I was going to die .I feel for Rand Paul .Pain medicine works for a while but the pain is always there and pneumonia is literally hell on your lungs.Very hard to get air in your lungs.I sincerely hope he will be ok.

Likewise. Got crunched sideways into the top sill of the boards on the hockey rink. Cracked ribs just below the armpit. Painful recovery. You cough, and it feels like getting shivved w an ice pick.

What the fuck, does the stupid bitch think he is so special that he wouldn’t have pain. Anyone who ever broke a rib has pain.
What a waste of time whining about it.

Someone tackles you from behind without warning, doing immediate serious bodily injury when he does, leaving you unable to respond, what is your defense plan for that?

Bobby!!! He was blind sided, from behind tough guy. Had noise cancelling head phones on. Couldn’t see it, or hear it coming. Who do you blow to get your lawn mowed, if you even own a piece of property? Rand’s old man was the closest we came, to a sensible man leading the reform. I gotta believe Ron positively influenced Rand, so he gets a worthy consideration and a bit of empathy in my book. My guess is your old man smacked you around like a beach ball, and called you a wuss for whimpering about it. Defenseless.

My youngest sister broke multiple ribs during a car accident a few years back- she also developed pneumonia as a result. She is fine today, but it was touch and go at that time. When I read about Paul’s injuries, I kind of expected he would develop pneumonia, too.

This is two attempts on Rand Paul’s well being.
The baseball shooting and now this.
This is no coincidence or happenstance.
This is enemy action.

I’d like to know how much Boucher got paid to do the deed. Or perhaps he was blackmailed into doing it. What baffles me is that the guy is stilll ..whole. Doesnt Paul have any real supporters? Sheesh.

Mostly dumbass comments above. Let’s look at some facts of law.

Legal definition. “Aggravated assault is an assault which criminal laws punish more severely due to its seriousness. Factors which raise an assault to an aggravated assault typically include the use of a weapon, the status of the victim, the intent of the perpetrator, and the degree of injury caused.” Aggravated assault is a FELONY punishable by up to 20 years in jail, depending on the severity of the assault. Now let’s get started.

Rand Paul was the victim of an aggravated assault and NOT the misdemeanor assault for which his attacker was arrested and charged. The dumb fuck attacker pleaded “not guilty” to this charge, probably on the advice of his dumb fuck lawyer. He could have walked with a fine, probation, and maybe community service. Rand Paul’s injuries and his medical records will prove beyond a shadow of doubt that it was an aggravated assault. Paul’s lawyer, if he’s smart, will push the prosecutor to up the charges to that level. And Paul will be a 100% guaranteed winner.

The attacker is now in a huge bind. He can cut an out-of-court settlement or face enormous legal bills fighting an open and shut case for which he can be sent to jail for years. Doesn’t matter whether it was a dispute between neighbors or some other intent or motive. Paul’s injuries don’t have to prove either, they just need to show severity of harm. And that Dr. Paul has.

Rand Paul has legally got this shitbag by the balls. I hope he squeezes. Hard.

Agreed, hope Rand ends up owning this guy.

Also hope we find out what the motive was.

The # of ridiculously idiotic comments on this post is quite disturbing. Seeing more shit-for-brains than normal.

Blindsiding someone causing this much bodily injury should be more than just a misdemeanor. I hope from now on if he’s out he has someone with him covering his six.

Martel's Hammer

I broke 7 ribs, collarbone and got a pnuemothorax (partially collapsed lung) from a motorcycle crash on the race track. You can pin a collarbone but the ribs not much but suffer a lot. Recliner or sleeping in a very propped up position are a must. Now the partially collapsed lung is even more painful with air entering the chest cavity….I have broken ribs 4 times and the lung hurt even more! In the ICU for 3 days I worked like a maniac on the puffer device to avoid the pneumonia that Sen Paul now has. Hurt like hell but the long term struggle to get rid of the pneumonia is even worse……you have to really question his doctors for letting him travel and not work the puffer. So except for the collarbone Sen Paul’s injuries sound reasonably similar to mine….and I was going bat out of hell on a motorbike and did a flip off the track. Sign the neighbor up for the National Felons League! Obviously catastrophic injuries worthy of a felony charge if not attempted murder.
