WTF STORY OF THE DAY

OAKLAND (KPIX 5) — A community is rallying around an East Bay grocery store clerk who got fired for trying to stop a crime. People can’t understand why trying to do the right thing got him canned.

When residents of Oakland’s Montclair District found out a beloved Lucky store employee of 17 years was fired for stopping a late night shoplifter they were outraged.

They all know him by his first name, Tang.

“His reward is getting fired from his job,” said Bradley White.

“I thought it was appalling,” said Diane Noroian, who lives in Montclair. “He followed the man out of the store and was spit on.”

Indeed, Tang was spit on by the shoplifter, and then fired by his company.

Lucky’s said it is corporate policy that employees don’t physically engage with customers.

But in a community worried about crime, many appreciated a store employee’s efforts to protect customers and try to stop a crime from happening.

“In the Village itself, there have been laptops stolen, purses stolen – it’s frightening ,” said Noroian. “I don’t feel safe coming down to the Village.”

Many appreciated a store employee’s efforts to protect customers and try to stop a crime from happening.

Montclair resident Kathy Neal is one of them.

“On a day honoring Martin Luther King, a man who broke the rules to do the right thing, this is appropriate we are here trying to support someday who did exactly that,” she said.

“We do not have enough police patrolling the hills,” said Bradley White.

Some customers have even started a #SaveTang movement online.

“There is an explosion on Nextdoor, there are all these posts,” said White. “People are outraged this guy worked 17 years and later we find out he got fired.”

Tang didn’t want to go on camera, but he told KPIX 5 he didn’t want to break the rules, he was just tired of seeing the shoplifting happening, over and over again.

Other employees said they’ve seen an increase in shoplifting, ever since customers have been asked to bring in their own bags. They fill up their bags and leave without paying at the register.

Montclair Village is a small, monied area on the edge of Boogieland. No need to wonder at the race of the shoplifter. Same race that’s mugging people on BART trains.

People should boycott that store until they rehire Mr. Tang.

Put the store out of business,if necessary.

I imagine the reason for their policy is to prevent liabilities from employee actions.

Keep in mind, it is not at all uncommon for criminals to sue their victims for all sorts of absurd reasons, and those suits are successful on a downright scary basis.

I have an acquaintance who is general counsel at a Fortune 500 company.

The above reason is exactly correct – the company is concerned with liability if the criminal sues – typically for “assault,” especially if the original crime committed involved no physical violence.

Sad but true.

Playing by those rules Tang needs to go ripoff the joint when managers and owners are present. If he gets stopped they lose their job and he gets to be the new owner(via courts).

I suppose urban grocery stores will have to get a credit card first before they allow people to shop. Sounds like this Lucky will be put out business soon if the shoplifting is as bad as the article indicates. Grocery stores only make 1 or 2% on sales so having a $10 dollar steak walk out the door means they make nothing on the next $1000 in sales.

Confronting/accosting shoplifters (except in certain instances by qualified loss prevention employees) has been FORBIDDEN for decades by a multitude of retailers.

I realize the legal climate sucks ass, but this dingbat Tang could have easily gotten his employer sued out of existence.

Non-story. Zero value. Waste of time.

Maybe these types of stores should install bulletproof glass and make all sales through a window.

They tried that in Philly. The City Council banned bulletproof glass because racism. I wish I was kidding.

The lesson we all need to learn from this is that terrorism works and the only way shit gets better is when our rulers fear us more than they fear the degenerates.

Employees need to realize that these corporations do not lose by theft… they write if off. Also they need to realize that corporations do not operate by conscience like people do. Corporations are not people although the non moral, non-ethical Administrative laws want to say they are people.

Strange time when looting and stealing is OK. But it is what it is so don’t worry be happy and watch the show.
