PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) — SEPTA police said a brawl caught on a cell phone camera started as a war of words between a group of teens on the trolley lines, then escalated at the subway surface entrance leading up to Dilworth Park.
They say it allegedly became more than physical when 18-year-olds Theodore Smith and Timira Barlow got involved.
“In this case you have an 18-year-old drawing a knife,” said SEPTA Police Chief Thomas Nestel. “This is serious stuff.”

Both teens are now charged with assault, but Chief Nestel said Tuesday’s violence is not isolated.
“This is kids beating kids every day,” said Nestel. “It’s every day in Philadelphia, somewhere on the system, kids beating kids.”

No, not really. I went to segregated schools and the black schools were not anything like the integrated schools of today. In fact, in D.C. the black kids dressed better than most white students. The girls wore dresses and the boys slacks and buttoned shirts. I’d see black teenagers in DC dressed for success wearing suits and ties. They may have been poor but they didn’t want to look it.
I saw a pictorial of segregated black schools in Virginia in the 1940’s and 50’s. Same thing. Clean neat students sitting at their desks even if the school was little more than a wooden building with a pot bellied stove in rural Virginia. I just bet those black school kids in their ‘inferior’ schools with their lower paid black teachers and hand me down text books would have run academic rings around today’s ‘negro’ students.
