My dad rarely drank, and never did after my sister died of alcoholism. But I have a memory of him sitting at our kitchen table one night with a shot of whiskey in front of him. I was about 10. He had a really bad cold and had missed a day or two of work, which was unheard of for him.
I remember watching him sitting with his head in his hands for several minutes then downing the shot in one gulp, getting up and going off to bed. Flu shot, indeed.
