The Distribution of murders

The United States can really be divided up into three types of places. Places where there are no murders, places where there are a few murders, and places where murders are very common.

In 2014, the most recent year that a county level breakdown is available, 54% of counties (with 11% of the population) have no murders.  69% of counties have no more than one murder, and about 20% of the population. These counties account for only 4% of all murders in the country.

The worst 1% of counties have 19% of the population and 37% of the murders. The worst 5% of counties contain 47% of the population and account for 68% of murders. As shown in figure 2, over half of murders occurred in only 2% of counties.

Murders actually used to be even more concentrated.  From 1977 to 2000, on average 73 percent of counties in any give year had zero murders. Possibly, this change is a result of the opioid epidemic’s spread to more rural areas. But that question is beyond the scope of this study.  Lott’s book “More Guns, Less Crime” showed how dramatically counties within states vary dramatically with respect to murder and other violent crime rates.

Breaking down the most dangerous counties in Figure 2 shows over half the murders occur in just 2% of the counties, 37% in just the worst 1% of the counties.

Figure 1 illustrates how few counties have a significant number of murders. Figure 3 further illustrates that with a cumulative perspective. 54% of counties have zero murders, 69% have at most one murder, 76% have at most two murders, and so on. To put it differently, only the top four percent of the counties have 16 or more murders.

In 2014, the murder rate was 4.4 per 100,000 people.  If the 1% of the counties with the worst number of murders somehow were to become a separate country, the murder rate in the rest of the US would have been only 3.4 in 2014. Removing the worst 2% or 5% would have reduced the US rate to just 3.06 or 2.56 per 100,000, respectively.

Even within the Counties with the murders, the murders are heavily Concentrated within those counties

When you look at individual counties with a high number of murders, you find large areas with few murders. Take Los Angeles County, with 526 murders in 2014, the most of any county in the US. The county has virtually no murders in the northwestern part of the county. There was only one murder each in Beverly Hills, Hawthorne, and Van Nuys. Clearly, different parts of the county face very different risks of murder.

The map below shows the distribution of murders in Indianapolis, with 135 murders. Although the city extends well beyond the 465 Highway that encircles downtown Indianapolis, there are only four murders outside of that loop. The northern half of the city within 465 also has relatively few murders.

Washington, DC has large areas without murders. 14th Street NW divides the eastern and western parts of the district, with murders overwhelmingly limited to the eastern half. The area around the capitol is also extremely safe.

Here is the murder map for Dallas.

Here are Chicago’s murders through the first 4.5 months of 2017 (there were 222 homicides by that point).  One small neighborhood, Austin, accounts over 25 murders.  But 23 of the 77 neighborhoods in the city have zero murders, and most of the 40 neighborhoods in orange have only one murder.  Twelve of the neighborhoods have 10 or more murders.

In a study in the journal Criminology, David L. Weisburd has a paper titled “The law of crime concentration and the criminology of place” that shows for eight cities 25% of violent crime occurred on one percent of the streets and that about half occurred on five percent of the streets.

Gun Ownership

According to a 2013 PEW Research Center survey, the household gun ownership rate in rural areas was 2.11 times greater than in urban areas (“Why Own a Gun? Protection is Now Top Reason,” PEW Research Center, March 12, 2013).   Suburban households are 28.6% more likely to own guns than urban households. Despite lower gun ownership, urban areas experience much higher murder rates. One should not put much weight on this purely “cross-sectional” evidence over one point in time and many factors determine murder rates, but it is still interesting to note that so much of the country has both very high gun ownership rates and zero murders.

Conclusion

This study shows how murders in the United States are heavily concentrated in very small areas. Few appreciate how much of the US has no murders each year.  Murder isn’t a nationwide problem.  It’s a problem in a very small set of urban areas, and any solution must reduce those murders.

Data

The number of murders for each county Excel file_2014 For the column FIPS_CTY, 777 is for Tribal Agencies’ data and 999 is State Police data.  The data is from the FBI UCR.  What the county and state codes number correspond to are provided here.

While we have been unable to locate a copy of his research, Robert Muggah (Igarapé Institute) says “that 99% of violence in the USA is concentrated in 5% of street addresses.

I heard that the red areas on that map are the ones not full of backward ignorant racists and that those areas are responsible for the majority of the nation’s GDP.

I also heard that the red areas are the places that tend to have stricter gun laws where it is more difficult to legally purchase and own firearms.

Why people would live in or near a large metro area is beyond me.

For work. I would move instantaneously if I could make a living in the countryside without having to spend 3 hours in my car every day. Tell me how I can do that please.

What kind of “living” are you used to, goy?

If you expect the same standard of living of the past 60 years or so, or even that of the 90’s, I’m sorry to tell you that is not in the cards for you, unless you are a part of the FSA.

The bright side of this is that there was no plan, conspiracy, or anything of the sort to import diversity and community-destroying values into this country, concentrate all higher-paying jobs into metro areas while off-shoring what skilled blue-collar jobs that weren’t absolutely vital, and force you to either live amongst tge diversity, pay more in life’s time and fuel to commute to the work area, or cut your previous level of lifestyle.

This is just one benefit of our greatest strength, diversity, and it is natural.

Haven’t you been listening to the TeeVee and reading the newspapers?

Anyone wanna guess what the demographics in those neighborhoods are? Blacks account for about 50% of all gun homicides in the country. Hispanics, especially illegals, account for another nearly 20%. Hard to get reliable data on the hispanic part, since many data groups count these as ‘white’, but what I’ve seen puts it at close to 20%. They are definitely over represnted in the statistics relative to their percentage of the US population. So, that leaves somewhere around 30% for all whites and Asians, which combined represent something like 70% of the population. In other words, white Americans, especially those conservatives out in fly-over country, are the largest demographic in the country, and the most heavily armed, and yet account have a gun homicide rate similar to the European countries whose gun laws we are told we need to emulate. Yet, despite committing such a low percentage of these crimes, and despite guns like the AR15, which are almost all owned by white conservatives, being used in exceedingly rare instances, WE are the group that the left and government is most intent on disarming. Hmmm. Wonder why that is.

Hmmm, indeed…

http://alisonweir.org/journal/2014/3/27/1996-jewish-week-article-on-rabbi-yitzhak-ginsburgh-ginzburg.html

“If you have two people drowning, a Jew and a non-Jew, the Torah says you save the Jewish life first,” Rabbi Ginsburgh told The Jewish Week. ”If every single cell in a Jewish body entails divinity, is a part of God, then every strand of DNA is a part of God. Therefore, something is special about Jewish DNA.”

Later, Rabbi Ginsburgh asked rhetorically, “If a Jew needs a liver, can you take the liver of an innocent non-Jew passing by to save him? The Torah would probably permit that.

“Jewish life has infinite value,” explained. “There is something infinitely more holy and unique about Jewish life than non-Jewish life.”

By the way, this is the same sect Jared Kushner and many, many other influential players belong to, Chabad-Lubavitch.

So if you have two people drowning, a white and a black, who do you save first?

And so on.

All people give preference to their own kind, that is human nature.

If you’re black, they both drown like Don Lemmon’s sister, ‘cuz you can’t swim.

Reminds me, cities should all be on islands, for violent crime would be nearly nonexistent on the mainland.

Now, would you be alright with someone stealing your liver because a tribesman needs it?

Seems to me it would be relatively easy if you were unarmed…

If a nigger drowns does anyone care? One less criminal thug running around either committing crimes or lowering property values and if its a female, one less breeding more crimnal thugs.

Another BIG factor is murders don’t obey normal distribution. Just like 5% of the people commit 95% of the crime , and 5% of the criminals commit 95% of those crimes (or something like that), a larger county has more probability of having a few of those “bad apples” doing most of the murder. The same principle applies to gender. Vastly more murderers are men, and ALL the mass murders.

That looks a lot like the map of the counties that voted for Hillary in 2016. Maybe we should just take guns from Democrats, since they say they don’t want ’em anyway. Think of the lives that would be saved, the children…the children…

Digging a little deeper you see that there are 3144 county or county equivalents so 2% would be approximately 63 counties and 5% would be 157 counties. While 54% would be almost 1700.

Anyone who isn’t flat line stupid, wildly dishonest, or morally bankrupt also knows the other commonalities that exist in the populations of these murder pockets. We’ll just keep that on the down low so as not to upset the children. After all, we don’t want their incisive mental processes to be clouded by anything approaching the truth, so as to better enable them to dictate policy to the adults of the nation when it comes to violence, murder, guns, etc.

The bigger issue when it comes to these sort of statistical breakdowns (and the part that really chaps my ass as a Montanan) is that the emotion driven political projectile vomiting about violence and guns that periodically covers the nation in its stink would lead an unthinking person to conclude that guns, murder, violence, blah, blah, blah are a nationwide problem. That is very obviously not the case. Score one for the power of the factually challenged portion of the population.

My question is this: Why should the decent, law-abiding residents of the murder free parts of the country share in any punishment (in terms of restricted freedoms) that should be imposed on the irresponsible ghetto children of the nation’s urban shitholes?

The question is, of course, rhetorical. If a population cannot, for whatever reason, handle the responsibilities of living in a free society, then said population is not entitled to the same freedoms as that portion of the population that can. It’s been said that Democracy is not a suicide pact, neither is it a mechanism for blanket punishment.

As the nation’s nervous breakdown accelerates, perhaps the States would do well to remember their proper role in a Constitutional Republic.

If you remove Blacks and Hispanics from the database, the US would have one of the lowest murder and crime rates in the world. It would also be a lot richer with fewer social and economic problems and no major urban ghettos. Isn’t diversity wonderful.
