You’re Not Actually Sailing If You’re Still Tied to the Dock

Guest post by The Unnameable

I look around these days and amongst my own kind I see three distinct groups: the Clueless, the Enraged and Those Poised for Battle. If you read Sun Tzu you will discover that timing is critical to any success; The Poised are now tight as a drawn bow, perpetually nocked and trembling with waiting for some definitive signal to release. Since something’s got to give lest The Poised collapse or fire prematurely, I recommend you learn to call the shots by making this giving-in conscious, deliberate, and beneficial.

If you live in the west, if you watch tv, if you attended taxpayer-funded school, if you once had faith in your government, organised religion, major media, then it’s guaranteed your mind has been chopped up, stamped on and re-formed like a chicken nugget. It would serve you to embrace that you have spent your entire life having your garbage picked up, having the fire brigade make an appearance when your house catches alight, enjoying the full rights and benefits of a contributor to a thriving republic, but now and for the foreseeable future no one is coming to rescue either you or your mind. Finding deliverance and freedom from the current mindfuckery under which we all labour is entirely up to you.

When your life is no longer working, when following orders or chasing after approval, recognition or promotion is no longer the thrill it once was it’s time to see that you just aren’t that guy anymore. It is then you must start thinking like a sculptor and begin to chip away the parts that are no longer you.

In the west, the practice of contemplation has endured massive amounts of subtle and not-so-subtle ridicule … why? Because it’s bad for business. Ask yourself where you first heard that contemplation was a waste of time? Someone will have said it at some point … who? And for what purpose? And what did they want you to do or buy instead? Practicing contemplation will make the answers to these questions clear.

Enabling the ability to think on your own is not in the best interest of any entity who would like to control you. The last thing they want is for you to have time to shut out their influence. What would happen to the mighty engine of the global financial system if people started to think for themselves? Daring to stand apart is what keeps the people who control the world on the lookout for straying livestock, poised to stun with the prod of name-calling and ridicule, backed up by the affirmative braying of the rest of the herd.

The practice of contemplation exposes and discards every ingrained thought form imposed upon you by your mother, the military, the media, the monastery — you name it, every human or institution bent on making you think a certain way has done so for one reason: to get you to quickly and efficiently do their will and not yours. Taking a daily deliberate interval of contemplation develops your skill at pressing the pause button on the bullshit barrage of life.

Contemplation ultimately erodes detrimental programming, leaving the real you standing alone in a vast field of possibility, the sun on your face and the rest of your life laid out before you like a chocolate box of real choices.

You will begin to see that opinions you may have once accepted as your own were instead inculcated by people who demanded you do their will in favour of your own. You want to be free? Focused self-reflection is how you begin. You want to change the world? Stop worrying about the world and instead change the only thing you ever can: yourself.

Down through the centuries many teachers would have you believe it takes a lifetime to achieve mastery, but every version boils down to this: for a space of time you will aim to allow the same state of physical relaxation you achieve naturally every time you go to sleep, yet maintain total awareness throughout. That’s it. Just find somewhere comfortable, lie down, breathe regularly, relax completely and stay awake. That is contemplation.

When you first start out you’re going to be wrapped pretty tightly, so your primary objective will be learning how to relax. Set aside a block of time when you will not be disturbed. Close the curtains and dim the room. Kill the phone. Minimise any electrical fields and high-frequency buzzing noises by turning off your computer and television. Don’t skimp—get to that place where you can breathe deeply and openly, without fear and with a growing sense of wonder. If you are fidgety it’s because you’ve been trained to have a horror of being bored.

If you are expecting an important call, don’t begin contemplation — you’ll only be braced for the phone to ring. Insist upon time when you will not be interrupted and commit fully by remembering that no matter how long your rope is, you’re not actually sailing if you’re still tied to the dock.

Lie back in a comfortable position, scan your body for any signs of clenched muscles and willingly allow them to relax. Breathe deeply and regularly. At first you may creep towards the threshold of consciousness and tumble right over into sleep but with practice you can hold yourself at the edge and bask a while.

As you approach the border between waking and sleep you may feel like you are swooning or rhythmically rocking or floating or falling. Let whatever happens, happen. Learn to enjoy this threshold, it’s where you will amaze yourself.

Some achieve a state of relaxation with binaural beats, trance music, drugs, alcohol or sexual release, then stop there, satisfied with the toolkit they have amassed to reach a chilled place, but you are aiming for something more: a greater prize awaits when you develop the skill to achieve the threshold whenever you want with no outside assistance, just your will and your breath. With practice, you can stimulate the release of any brain chemicals you will ever need by the power of your focused intent.

Contemplation is achieving the same level of relaxation you enjoy naturally during sleep, without losing consciousness. Insisting upon this interval, making that space in time for yourself, by yourself, will give you the stamina you need to win any war, and when the time comes to release your arrow it will fly straight and true to the very heart of our enemy.

Who needs contemplation when you can read the moranic comments here and detect the government programming at work?

Conservative-leaning folks don’t spontaneously go mad in droves, they are programmed by radio windbags and TV commentators. It gets to the point they throw a shit-fit if their phone asks them to press 2 for Spanish. Really?

While it may seem incredulous, breathing isn’t performed very well by a lot of people. In the hustle/bustle of life we become anxious, stressed, etc. We start breathing employing the chest muscles, which is inefficient. We breathe too frequently (12-20 breaths per minute) and with shallow breaths. This increases O2, which excites our nervous system (fight or flight=sympathetic response) which causes stress, anxiety and fatigue. We need to slow down respiration to increase CO2 (I can get down to 2-3 breaths per minute pretty easily). This has a calming effect (parasympathetic system=rest and digest). It’s referred to as diaphragmatic breathing (breathing using the diaphragm). The diaphragm is the most fatigue resistant muscle in the body because it has the most mitochondria (outside the heart?).
If you want to relearn how to breathe, observe an infant. They are experts. You’ll see their belly rise and fall, not the chest wall.
I couldn’t find a good article with a good overview of the reasons and benefits but this wasn’t too bad

Lovely and enjoyable read. Thank you Unnameable.

I do this, as you describe. Regularly I am interrupted by the big dog that whines
until I get the purple “blanket” onto the sofa signaling she may “jump up.”
Then kitty comes and purrs settling on my chest. Dog snuggles closer and tighter in…
and I am able to relax at last. It is wonderful to contemplate. The anchor is hoisted,
and I do begin to sail. The relax often becomes a short nap. I wake refreshed.

Who is this (supposedly) new “Unnameable” contributor …. who wrote a very nice and helpful article??

The article is along the same lines as the Buddhist teaching of “mindfulness” ….. also a great and helpful concept.

It is also along the lines of Christian thinking;

“Finally, brethren,
— whatsoever things are true,
— whatsoever things are honest,
— whatsoever things are just,
— whatsoever things are pure,
— whatsoever things are lovely,
— whatsoever things are of good report;
—– if there be any virtue, and
—– if there be any praise,
——— think on these things.

I call Bullshit. Contemplation…..meditation and yoga are but two examples of what ‘they’ or ‘them’ want you to practice. They want you alone and pondering just what the author said…..’you are alone and no one is coming to help you’. Practice it, study it, learn it, love it….. I call bullshit on this piece. The best therapist you will ever find is a good friend, followed by a dog. As the great thinker of his time, Marty Crane said when it comes to deep thoughts and life analysis….’use the can like everybody else’. Or when you’re driving, or going to bed, or waking up…..for me, talk to God. Or start talking to God. For you?
We’re a dislocated and fractured enough society as it is – we need to talk, share, work, learn – with people we like and care about. We DO NOT need to go through this bullshit of ‘alone time’. All I have to say, lesson over. Now fuck off and leave me….alone?

Yes… we need community… but you cannot build them if you are made angry by another person’s point of view and advice.

Prayer, meditation and contemplation are branches of the same tree; trunk, limbs and roots.

I have dabbled in the three for many years. Exposed in the late 60’s via hippyish college day fashion in SoCal, a life attending churches and for three months in Hattiesburg MS we were instructed daily in variations of the exercise. We would have group meditations/contemplation daily to begin our day from our residence or in group sessions. And several times a week a leader/instructor would give us instruction in popular methods – such as music and guided imagery.

12 step practice fosters daily personal inventory of actions (contemplation) in relation to professed intentions. This is achieved through introspection of a spiritual nature. I find it helpful to end my day.

“Sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God, as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.”

A useful exercise for me was to contemplate/meditate on the Lord’s Prayer. In some of my most trying times, to focus on the meaning of every word brought insight and solace.

“Thy Will Be Done” asks a question worthy of long thought.

There is a condition many refuse; it does require an invitation for the Indecipherable to enter your life. I believe with regular (some call it ritual) practice of seeking sacred answers, much will be revealed. And if that fails, fake it ’til you make it….

edit. re: breathing. So True! My most phobic dental clients had to be instructed to breath, a skill they sorely lacked. As do most anxiety prone individuals. And was always taught by those bring instruction in the art.

Contemplation is meditation for Christians that dare not mess in the realm of the weird eastern religions. Just pick a sound. One that has no meaning for you is best, because your brain will attempt to find meaning, rhymes and all such things. ” Om” works for most “Shuring” is another. Repeat the sound, your head will take you on very short journeys at first. When you return just resume with repeating the sound you have chosen. With some repetition, you will blow through twenty minutes to half an hour. Give no judgement to your thoughts as they occur, let them empty from you. As you are attempting “contemplation,” tell yourself there is no wrong way to do it, because there is no wrong way to do it. Your ears will become acute to your surroundings, you will have to accept this auditory clarity, then ignore it by silently repeating your chosen sound. If Tommy comes into your thoughts, give him the bird.

Chill Tommy. I was poking you for your old person driving rant from months back. Your chain is so easy to pull that I can’t help myself. I learned to meditate back in the ’70s maybe before you were born. It’s especially helpful for those occasional headaches when drugs won’t do it. You make me laugh because of your grumpy demeanor. You’d be very surprised at my deep introspective nature. My response to you might have seemed slow, but I was attempting to clean the boiled linseed oil from my hands. The problem with a primarily reactive consciousness is what some would call the “monkey mind”. If you are only ever interested in “driving” or in “Fight Club” mode, then you are forever a slave to those reactive emotions and triggers, subject to the vagaries of short-term boosts or offenses, losses or rewards.

The point of meditation is not to become a pile of goo, but to observe and (control is a bad word, but maybe “mediate” or “broker”?) one’s emotions. Rather, control ends up coming naturally as a byproduct the process of observation rather than by “trying” or grasping for said control.

I doubt whether any great (or small) number of humans can ever completely conquer the “monkey mind”, but trying can’t hurt. I think so-called conservatives err in discounting the usefulness of these techniques (along with non-dualism).

I have enjoyed the limited amount of ‘official’ meditation I’ve done. I find certain hobbies and domestic tasks to give meditative benefits when approached correctly.

If you have one of the many free apps offering meditation / mindfulness – and some nice headphones – there are generally a few “Yoga Nidra” options of varying lengths.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Yoga nidra is a state of consciousness between waking and sleeping, like the “going-to-sleep” stage. It is a state in which the body is completely relaxed, and the practitioner becomes systematically and increasingly aware of the inner world by following a set of verbal instructions.
This state of consciousness (yoga nidra) is different from meditation in which concentration on a single focus is required.
In yoga nidra the practitioner remains in a state of light withdrawal of the 5 senses (pratyahara) with four of his or her senses internalised, that is, withdrawn, and only the hearing still connects to the instructions.
The yogic goal of both paths, deep relaxation (yoga nidra) and meditation are the same, a state of meditative consciousness called samadhi.
Yoga nidra is among the deepest possible states of relaxation while still maintaining full consciousness.
Yes, indeed. First came a curious mind, and thirst for knowledge. The contemplation ( or “moment of clarity”) only came a few years later after the tsunami of knowledge and insight gained from the wonders of the internet, from authentic human beings and true journalists like Jim Quinn. In this process you end up throwing away all the years of propaganda and indoctrination fed to you by “the system”. The system grows you like a field of brainless cabbage, to be exploited and consumed over your life span until the medical system takes your last red cent and leaves you for dead.
While I, like you, prefer freedom and knowledge of truth, I sometimes contemplate whether I have in fact learned too much about how the western world really works, and the daunting level of corruption and evil lurking around every corner. Also the goodness you find when God blesses you unexpectedly with wonderful people that help you in your journey.
I wonder whether it is ever bad to “learn too much”. Rather, we have to find or invent tools to give us the capacity to accomodate what we have learned. Non-attachment is one such tool.
Thanks for the reminder – there are many paths to oneness, and the din of news and propaganda tends to lead in endless circles (deliberately? Probably). I haven’t reached enlightenment yet, since I still hate those who would enslave me – but the books are still on the shelf, for after the Crunch.
Zen is another path to escape the mindlessness with mindfulness. Short stories are used to help break the chains of ignorance and attachment. Here’s one for those who have never been exposed:
#29 (from the Mumon-kan): Not the wind, not the flag
Two monks were arguing about a flag. One said, “The flag is moving”.
The other said, “The wind is moving”.
The sixth patriarch happened to be passing by. He told them, “Not the wind, not the flag; mind is moving”.
Mumon’s comment: The sixth patriarch said: “The wind is not moving, the flag is not moving. Mind is moving”. What did he mean? If you understand this intimately, you will see the two monks there trying to buy iron and gaining gold. The sixth patriarch could not bear to see those two dull heads, so he made such a bargain.
Wind, flag, mind moves,
The same understanding.
When the mouth opens,
All are wrong.
A lot of unhappy people go through life and never figure out the innate human necessity to spend time nourishing mind, body AND spirit. Ignore any of the 3 aspects of your humanity and life is a struggle.
For me, even gardening ( weeding or carefully planting tiny lettuce or carrot seeds)or sitting on a dock for hours with a fishing pole is very contemplative and spiritually freeing—-
Psalm 46:10 10He says, “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.”
Romans 1:20 20For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood from His workmanship, so that men are without excuse.…
Be still and know………
Not wanting to be the fly in the ointment (yeah right) and certainly with some deference to the unnamable one. We don’t need contemplation. Got way too much of that. We need people who find ways to take action. Contemplation won’t solve anything. Action does. By this point in time we can all see pretty clearly what’s messed up. Question always is, what are you going to do about it? And there’s few good answers. Finding little things that you can do, that point in the right direction is critical. I don’t criticize doers. They are too rare, and too special. And they’re what moves the world, good or bad. I can give a shit about people who sit back and contemplate. And I don’t mean that in a hostile way. Philosophy just isn’t going to solve anything. It’s just a fact. We’re past that point.
Where do thoughts come from? Unbidden are they not? One after another all day long. So then you use “will” as Unameable suggests to repress thought. This is not meditation. This is just an attempt to control the mind, but who is the controller and who is the controlled? Are they not one? And yet we go about acting as if the one is in the catbird seat and the other does what is willed for it to do. Nonsense! This is exactly opposite of reality this creating in your mind two when there is just one. By splitting one into two you create conflict in yourself yet convince yourself that you are meditating.
Will is not the way. Quietness is the way. No thought at all. The empty cup is useful. You cannot beg the Universe to come to you, you cannot invite it, you cannot force it with your will. You must be quiet for intelligence to come to you. No thought. Just being. How to stop thought? Wrong question.
It’s easier and more difficult than that. By noticing thought, it stops on its own. Easy. What is difficult is to sustain “noticing.” Try it. Can you look at something without naming it? Just see it as if for the first time? By and by the stretches of non-thought get longer and that is meditation and is what you do all day long instead of sitting in a position and pretending you have control.
That is your one platform, that covers all the world’s ills. Curious, though, do you even know a Jew? I know a great many. not a single one falls into the characterization you paint. Each one is hard-working, honest, family oriented, who value relationships, education, and thrift. Not a one is interested in overthrowing the nation. Each has their own view of where the nation should go, as is their right as US citizens. some support Israel, as is also their right, as do literally millions of Christians.
You have backed the expulsion of a people from the US based on their religion. Those people are US citizens. That is contrary to everything the nation stands for, and was built upon. You clearly want to overthrow the entire Constitutional system, and have stated as such with your positions.
You are deranged and in serious need of mental health support. I am not kidding. Your family should do an intervention. Ever so often that derangement leaks entirely through, such as when you try to damage this site with your fake cartoons and false attributions, or when you post hundreds, one after another, of anti-Semitic rants and memes, of pro-Hitler memes and fake Holocaust news. You know they are fake and false, and post them anyway, in hope of convincing the gullible. And in so doing placed the Admin at enormous personal risk, and potentially damage the viability of the site.
Seriously, what the fuck is wrong with you?
Edit – and the post to which I was responding has disappeared.
Who cares that it’s gone. YoBo needs a daily whipping anyway. If it isn’t transparent that he is faking quotes, he is outright lying and bringing the blog reputation down to the level of his usual disreputable reading fare.
I find that when I am busy building things, creating things or repairing things, problem solving, where my hands are engaged in an activity and I’m mentally immersed in what I’m doing I find not only a great satisfaction, but also have some of the most wonderful thoughts and insights pop into my head. If things are going well and I’m in the flow it all just happens naturally without effort or conscious thought and it gives me peace of mind. I can achieve this state also while doing strenuous activities like dirt bike riding and cutting firewood.
And get a cigar. A good one.
And a drink..
I know everyone says brandy, but I prefer Scotch.
Scotch and a cigar and that’s me contemplating.
Gilbert – I gave up the cigars long ago. But the scotch stays. Sometimes a top shelf bourbon, or aged Martinique rum, or a Patron tequila. Mix things up, keep thingsinteresting.
In keeping with the free sailing metaphors : ships are never safer then when they are tied up to the dock , but that’s not what ships are ment to do !
When the draft of your boat exceeds the debth of the water you are aground !
We are all condemned men , the reason our miserable lives have been spared is to propel this ship ! Row well and live ! This man is sick , toss him over the side …!
Warships are often safer out on the open water. Pearl Harbor attests to that fact.
The very worst place for a ship to be during a serious storm is tied up to a dock. That’s a real good way to beat itself into sinking. A ‘hurricane hole’ port is a good thing, with slack anchor chains. Otherwise the best bet is to be out in deep water with the bow into the waves. With good ballast, of course.
You fuckers are just too lazy to do the research yourselves.It is not anti semitic when you are telling the truth. Most Jews are guilty like Blacks are guilty .Older blacks Never say a word about the crime young Blacks commit .In fact their silence is just encouraging more crime. Jews Never says a Fucking word about the treasonous son of a bitches in their Tribe or the crime their Tribe commits every fucking day aganist the Arabs in Israel.If nothing else do some damn Google search es.
BB – you haven’t got any smarter since your illness. I figure you were without oxygen too long on the table. Your IQ has plummeted from low double digits to single figures. You now qualify for Village Idiot’s Village Idiot. Hell, my average morning dump is smarter than you.
For someone who quotes scripture and talks about God, you sure spew a lot of hate. To say nothing of ignoring huge swathes of the Word. Look in the mirror, Brother. What fruits do you see? Galatians 5:19-24
I suggest Romans chapter 11. Chapter 10 sets the scenario, but 11 explains God’s mind toward Israel. ESPECIALLY verse 28 and on to the end.
Next time BB goes into the hospital to remove a pimple on his butt, they should remove and replace his brain. He’s hit rock bottom in the thought process, it could only improve if they put little bb’s brain in his cranium.
Especially when the Washington DC circle jerk Wall Street to K-Street to Capitol Street sit back and make a fortune from your blood and your families treasure but fuck it they will call you a hero and give you a fucking happy meal ! If you make it back , assuming there is some place to come back to !
