Never claim the 5th Amendment. Not talking to avoid self incrimination makes you sound guilty.
Instead, claim the 6th Amendment, the right to an attorney.
Either way knowing enough to ask “am I being detained”comes first.
If the answer is no, leave. If the answer is yes, requesting an attorney and keeping your mouth shut is the correct thing to do 99% of the time.
The one exception I’m aware of is after the lawful use of deadly force, and even in that case what is said should be extremely limited. Limit it to pointing out witnesses, evidence, stating who was the aggressor, agreeing to sign a complaint/press charges, asking for a lawyer and requesting 72 hours before you make a statement.
