Tell the truth.
Do not do things that you hate.
Act so that you can tell the truth about how you act.
Pursue what is meaningful, not what is expedient.
If you have to choose, be the one who does things, instead of the one who is seen to do things.
Pay attention.
Assume that the person you are listening to might know something you need to know. Listen to them hard enough so that they will share it with you.
Plan and work diligently to maintain the romance in your relationships.
Be careful who you share good news with.
Be careful who you share bad news with.
Make at least one thing better every single place you go.
Imagine who you could be, and then aim single-mindedly at that.
Do not allow yourself to become arrogant or resentful.
Try to make one room in your house as beautiful as possible.
Compare yourself to who you were yesterday, not to who someone else is today.
Work as hard as you possibly can on at least one thing and see what happens.
If old memories still make you cry, write them down carefully and completely.
Maintain your connections with people.
Do not carelessly denigrate social institutions or artistic achievement.
Treat yourself as if you were someone that you are responsible for helping.
Ask someone to do you a small favour, so that he or she can ask you to do one in the future.
Make friends with people who want the best for you.
Do not try to rescue someone who does not want to be rescued, and be very careful about rescuing someone who does.
Nothing well done is insignificant.
Set your house in perfect order before you criticize the world.
Dress like the person you want to be.
Be precise in your speech.
Stand up straight with your shoulders back.
Don’t avoid something frightening if it stands in your way — and don’t do unnecessarily dangerous things.
Do not let your children do anything that makes you dislike them.
Do not transform your wife into a maid.
Do not hide unwanted things in the fog.
Notice that opportunity lurks where responsibility has been abdicated.
Read something written by someone great.
Pet a cat when you encounter one on the street.
Do not bother children when they are skateboarding.
Don’t let bullies get away with it.
Write a letter to the government if you see something that needs fixing — and propose a solution.
Remember that what you do not yet know is more important than what you already know.
Be grateful in spite of your suffering.

12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos, my new book (Penguin/Random House), is based on a dozen of these rules. It is currently available from many sellers here: 12 Rules For Life
1) Where they buried their cache
2) The combination to their safe
3) How to say….”yes, dear”
What does a man need to know?
“To Ride, Shoot Straight, and Speak the Truth” -Jeff Cooper
Everyone would benefit from when parents are teaching their children about life, to keep these ideals in mind. To some they seem too simple, and yet so few actually live a life revolving around these things. Many very smart people that I know find it truly hard to listen, even more so when it does not align with their view of the world. I think some here want some sort of Holy Grail of wisdom and yet sometimes the simplest forms of enlightenment are the most important and most easily overlooked. I lead a much less than perfect life, if I can improve on one thing each day I consider it a victory.
I like the line:
” Compare yourself to who you were yesterday, not to who someone else is today.”
Basic, but boiled down to its essence, it can lead to continuous improvement. I doubt anyone here, except maybe Lloph, could use some improvement.
Bob.
Wow, improvement for you would include not worshipping others. Either that or you’ve found the perfect man, go be with him and serve him.
If you are being sarcastic, I apologize.
Bob, pretty sure you meant to say “imagine”, not “doubt” above, in the last sentence.
Your grammar could use some improvement.
And what say you blow me. Not sure I have ever had a bad word to say about you. That you would mention me in such a way is unusual.
Know what compound interest is and what it can do for you.
Know what the Federal Reserve is and what it’s doing to you and your compound interest.
Know what inflation can do for you and your assets.
Ahh, the “buy high, sell higher” investment strategy so in vogue these days. Deflation is impossible. We can hyperinflate our debt away. Financialization of an entire economy is a good thing. Yikes.
Deflation is the last thing you want to see.
Less available money, just as much debt that has to be paid off with it.
Don’t listen to dum dum here. Deflation is your friend. Your money becomes more valuable. As opposed to inflation where your money becomes less valuable.
Which is why we’re never going to get deflation…it’s good for the savers and not the leveraged/indebted.
Deflation is definitely in the cards, WIP. Trump is steering us towards a production based economy, as opposed to an inflation-based economy
Yes, you owe, say, a quarter million on your mortgage and your income, becoming more valuable through deflation, becomes half of what it is but your debt stays at a quarter million.
That means that the deflation is good for you, right?
Most people either don’t think or don’t understand what inflation/deflation means in relation to the money supply. Inflation increases it (in relation to the amount of goods) and deflation reduces it.

I like this one best.

There is more than one way to fuck a chicken. So you fuck them your way, and i’ll fuck ’em my way
Very good advice from JP. Yobe fails to see the value?? Why?
Decent, ethical behavior is sorely needed in this country.
Jordan Peterson should have put being good at math on his list.
You can find flaws in any man, that’s just how human beings are. If Peterson fails to live up to what we’d like to see in a man, then we better be sure we are better in every way. Glass houses and all that.
Most everything I have seen him convey makes very clear the basis of his personal philosophy and we would all do well to have one as grounded and sensible as his seems to be.
My only problem with him is that he’s an academic and gives the impression of his living in a bubble, but that’s his particular journey and only he knows if it’s a limitation on his perception of the world. It’s hard not to admire his composure in the face of the often withering criticisms which more often than not aren’t even relevant to the points he makes.
I’m on the third chapter of his new book, Can’t put the dam Kindle down. The man makes alot of sense.
Great points.
And JP provides a plethora of wisdom for those with ears to hear
Never talk to, or trust a cop. Never call 911, no matter what.

Work with your hands.
Walk barefoot.
Do your own dishes.
If you use the last of the toilet paper, replace the roll.
Don’t give advice unless someone asks for it.
Make your bed in the morning.
Keep the gas tanks full.
Put your tools back when you are done.
Rub your wifes’ feet even if yours hurt more than hers.
If it comes to blows, hit first and hit hard (not your wife, I mean in general)
Many things (esp the Shroud & Facecloth and Jesus Encounters) convince me that the Gospel is closer to the Truth about God than anything else written and that is the most important thing a human needs to know. After that, many people have a lot of wisdom to offer.
Do right and face the consequences, John
I just finished doctor Peterson’s book a few days ago and I think there is a ton of wisdom between it’s covers. I got a lot out of it. I wish I’d had it 45 years ago when it would have done me a lot more good. I think everyone would benefit from reading it, especially young folks. Set your house in perfect order before you criticize the world.
