Why Isn’t Gina Haspel Coming Clean About Torture?

We know that in the early 2000s, Gina Haspel’s CIA was rendering accused terrorists to unfathomable torture in Syria, as well as Egypt and Jordan. And we know that in 2005, Haspel herself was busy ordering the destruction of evidence of her involvement in the waterboarding of prisoners.

What we don’t know is if she was involved in sending Maher Arar, a Canadian engineer, to Syria, where he was tortured by Bashar Assad—the same Assad now condemned for gassing his own people; the same Assad the CIA has been trying to depose for the past six years.

Did Haspel participate or even order Arar and others to be sent to Syria to be tortured? We will likely never know: Haspel, whose nomination for director of the CIA is currently being considered by the Senate, refuses to declassify the dark underbelly of her involvement in extreme rendition and torture-by-proxy.

Jane Mayer recounted Arar’s story in 2005 after interviewing him for The New Yorker:

Ten hours after landing in Jordan, Arar … was driven to Syria, where interrogators … “just began beating on me.” They whipped his hands repeatedly with two-inch-thick electrical cables, and kept him in a windowless underground cell that he likened to a grave. “Not even animals could withstand it,” he said. Although he initially tried to assert his innocence, he eventually confessed to anything his tormentors wanted him to say. “You just give up, he said. “You become like an animal.”

A year later, in October, 2003, Arar was released without charges. … Imad Moustapha, the Syrian Ambassador in Washington, announced that his country had found no links between Arar and terrorism. Arar, it turned out, had been sent to Syria on orders from the U.S. government, under a secretive program known as “extraordinary rendition.” This program had been devised as a means of extraditing terrorism suspects from one foreign state to another for interrogation and prosecution. Critics contend that the unstated purpose of such renditions is to subject the suspects to aggressive methods of persuasion that are illegal in America—including torture.

Was Haspel simply a loyal dupe, unable to protest an accused man being sent to certain barbaric torture? Or was she an eager participant in this dark chapter in our history?

If she had any criticisms at the time, Haspel, who is currently the acting head of the CIA, has the power to declassify them. And yet all we’ve gotten are select records that don’t address her participation in extraordinary rendition.

Know this: That fact alone should be enough to cause the Senate to reject her nomination.

If that POS Haspel is confirmed, it’s time for all concerned Americans to exercise their Second Amendment rights by marching on Langley!

The CIA will never be brought to accountability save for direct action by US citizens, the majority of whom continue to remain blissfully unaware of the great contempt in which they are viewed by the so-called “three-letter agencies”.

Any mention of terrorists locking people in metal cages then burning them alive or drowning them? Using hospitals & schools & women & children as human shields? Beheadings ring any bells?

Yeah, Haspel is way to tough on terrorists. We need to ask them “please” & then smile & give them cake when they flip US off, blow up buildings, do their knife attack thing, scxream “Death to America!!”, shootouts at nightclubs & other places, ignore their rape gangs in Switzerland, France, England & Germany.

Stuff like water boarding, making them stand for long periods, small cells & making them listen to Elton John music hardly compares to real torture. I am not for the kind of torture that is comparatively gruesome, but what are we supposed to do?

It’s easy to criticize Haspel, but what do those who oppose her suggest???

Oh well. I hope she gets in. Love ya Rand, but I haven’t heard any suggestions from you either on what to replace ‘torture’ with.

I’m really tired of hearing about “Assad gassing his own people” I don’t believe it. First thing our govt does is demonize the opposition. And all of the “I will gladly kiss Isreals ass” politicians keep repeating the same lie.
Fuck all of you clowns.

Assad didn’t gas those people. One America News has a reporter in Assyria that can’t find any victims of the last so called gas attack. They have had 3 or 4 investigating reporters there who have found no proof for the last attack or that Assad did the one before.

OAN did find that the people we see running in the news videos were running to areas under Assad’s control for protection. He has been protecting religious minorities in Assyria, not gassing them.

Assad has 000000 to gain by gassing his people. Oh yeah… he does. He gets a nice flock of bombs landing on his country.

Torture has been used since prehistoric times. It is still used because it works in spite of the fiction peddled by those who oppose it. It is all the negative things people say about it but necessary in some cases. It is the way it is and to act differently is a fools errand. Super heroes with capes and tights are only in comics and movies.

I struggle with getting excited about whether a CIA higher up went along with waterboarding a possible terrorist 15 years ago when the country seems ripe for self-destruction on multiple fronts. The deep State is determined to negate a valid Presidential election and pulling every dirty and criminal trick out of the hat to accomplish that. I don’t think Paul understands that by picking at Trump and obstructing him, he is choosing the wrong side of the war we are engaged in now. The civil liberties of my children and grandchildren contained within the Bill of Rights are under attack. I don’t find it difficult to ignore the theoretical civil liberties of foreign nationals who have connections with terrorists 15 YEARS AGO. We the people seem to have lost our collective ability to see clearly and maybe even to survive.

First they tortured my enemies, but I didn’t say anything ….

You know the rest, don’t you?

And what exactly did they do to become our “enemies?” They most certainly didn’t attack our nation. The fact that they attempted to defend their country when the US military invaded it illegally and immorally certainly should not get them labeled as enemies.

Well, we’ve already managed to have one who converted to Islam, and who’s voted Communist in Presidential elections!

i usually agree w/rand paul but he’s full of crap on this issue–
we use torture during every war we have & if it saves lives i’m fine w/it so long as it’s used specifically & not indiscriminately–
furthermore, water boarding barely fits the definition of what i’d bet most of us call torture–

Yep, Trump is protecting us alright, by putting the grand torturess in charge of the CIA. Criminally insane psychopaths are running loose in top government positions, and growing in numbers. MAGA….

The fact is she would NOT directly answer any questions about the morality of torture. That alone should disqualify her.

I’m sure some high voltage applied to the right areas would get the answers out of her. For sure it should be tried.

I don’t think we should outsource torture. If we want to abuse people we need to do it ourselves. Probably better than some Muslim savage who really enjoys torturing people Own that shit. I don’t have any problem with torture, it is just part of the human condition. I am not even sure what the issue is with Rand or David Night at Infowars etc….we can kill terrorists but we can’t torture them? Idiotic. Its asymmetrical warfare and information is critical for the defender to roll up the insurgent networks. Nothing magical or unique its just what you do.
