Fishy Business

Guest Post by Jim Kunstler

Picking up a trope conceived months back, the melodrama of US governance is looking more and more like Herman Melville’s Moby Dick, with the FBI as the doomed ship Pequod, with R. Mueller as Captain Ahab and D.J. Trump as the white whale. In the classic book, of course, the wounded whale finally sends the ship to the bottom, crew and all (but one), and swims away to the freedom of the deep blue sea.

Forgive the barrage of movie metaphor, but there’s quite a bit of the 1944 classic Gaslight in here too — and sure, I’m not the first to notice. In that film, the wicked Charles Boyer manipulates his wife, played by Ingrid Bergman, into thinking she’s lost her marbles, in order to cover up his own crimes. That’s how I feel when I turn to The New York Times every morning — for instance, today’s edition, with the front-page story Trump Proxies Drop by Briefings on Use of F.B.I. Informant (which headline was actually changed on the landing page to Trump’s Lawyer and Chief of Staff Appear at Briefings on F.B.I.’s Russia Informant).

This mendacious exercise in manufacturing paranoia seeks to divert the public’s attention from the actual matter at hand, which is whether the highest higher-ups in the FBI will hand over documents to congressional committees who demanded them, as they are entitled to do by the constitution. Trump’s lawyers and General Kelly “dropped by” to remind the FBI officials that the president, as chief officer of the executive branch, has instructed the FBI mandarins to comply. In other words, the Newspaper of Record endeavors to distort the record of events. That’s disgraceful enough, but they are also abetting what appears more and more to be a case of mutiny with overtones of sedition.

After many months, the gaslight is losing its mojo and a clearer picture has emerged of just what happened during and after the 2016 election: the FBI, CIA, and the Obama White House colluded and meddled to tilt the outcome and, having failed spectacularly, then labored frantically to cover up their misdeeds with further misdeeds. The real election year crimes for which there is actual evidence point to American officials not Russian gremlins. Having attempted to incriminate Trump at all costs, these tragic figures now scramble to keep their asses out of jail.

I say “tragic” because they — McCabe, Comey, Rosenstein, Strzok, Page, Ohr, et al — probably think they were acting heroically and patriotically to save the country from a monster, and I predict that is exactly how they will throw themselves to the mercy of the jury when they are called to answer for these activities in a court of law. Of course, they have stained the institutional honor of the FBI and its parent Department of Justice, but it is probably a healthier thing for the US public to maintain an extremely skeptical attitude about what has evolved into a malevolent secret police operation.

The more pressing question is how all this huggermugger gets adjudicated in a timely manner. Congress has the right to impeach agency executives like Rod Rosenstein and remove them from office. That would take a lot of time and ceremony. They can also charge them with contempt-of-congress and jail them until they comply with committee requests for documents. Mr. Trump is entitled to fire the whole lot of the ones who remain. But, finally, all this has to be sorted out in federal court, with referrals made to the very Department of Justice that has been a main actor in this tale.

The most mysterious figure in the cast is the MIA Attorney General, Jeff Sessions, who has become the amazing invisible man. It’s hard to see how his recusal in the Russia matter prevents him from acting in any way whatsoever to clean the DOJ house and restore something like operational norms — e.g. complying with congressional oversight — especially as the Russia matter itself resolves as a completely fabricated dodge. The story is moving very fast now. The Pequod is whirling around in the maelstrom, awaiting the final blow from the white whale’s mighty flukes.

Jeff Sessions? Who is that? Do we have a Trump-appointed AG? I thought everything was still run by the hand-me-downs from Obama.

President Trump is a classic counter-puncher, seems to be his established MO for a long time now. His opponents have just about punched themselves out….
They are good and truly fucked now, they threw their biggest haymakers and came up short, fucked for life.

I prefer that “they” – the whole top tier of the CRIMINAL United SNAKES CORP, D[e]C[eit] be relegated to the “FEMA gulag” for the remainder of their pathetic, ignominious “existences”; given some veggie seeds and hand guns so “they” can “have at it”/”sort things out among themselves”. BTW – that includes ALL three branches – especially the “magis/legisTRAITORS”.

All The Naked Kings Men (Democrats, NeoCons, RINOs, MSM, Facebook, FBI plants in the Trump Campaign etc) are searching for the Russian Spies that stole the election, and the Deplorables are supposed to believe any of them? Liberals have the brain power of the Keystone Cops and Three Stooges. Especially since Putin said that if Harpy won, Russia would destroy America. But the Rats keep feverishly pulling every crooked lever they can behind the curtain trying to fool the Useful Idiots so they will vote for more Rats in Nov.

Greetings,
I do not see a blue wave come November. That dyke Maddow and the rest of the turds in the punch bowl have placed 100% of their credibility on the line by proclaiming that the Russians stole the elections and that the president is illegitimate. Now, the president could have fired everyone involved and really fought back hard but he let EVERYONE take their best shot at him as he stood there with his hands behind his back to include having Jeff Sessions placed in either a coma or suspended animation or whatever.

People I know that were running around screeching and parroting the MSM misinformation feel about as stupid as a 7th grader that still believes in Santa – I know ’cause I ask them about it all the time. I mean, just how stupid would you feel if you went to bat for Felonia Von Pantsuit? Seriously, just how goddamn stupid would you feel?

This is why viewership for the #Nevertrump media has plummeted off of a cliff. CNN is a dead man walking and it wouldn’t surprise me if the NFL replaced its cheerleaders with stripper pole dancers in an attempt to bring viewership back. Come on, even blacks are finally beginning to realize that they’ve been played which is something I thought I’d never see in my lifetime.

Uncola

That was great, Nickel.

Rachel Maddow is appearing increasingly ashen of late. It’s like watching someone’s dream fade from their grasp or, in the words of REM, losing their religion.

The other side has fear in their eyes. Watch the oleaginous scumbag, Jeff Flake, in this video (beginning at the 2:50 mark). He is speaking (or rather reading) at Harvard and seems to be having difficulty concentrating. In my opinion, he barely appears to have sufficient fire in the belly to take a piss in the squat position.

Regarding JK’s piece, I enjoyed the Moby Dick references, and appreciated them as another “agreement” in the random universe given the commentary in my last “Meditations” piece.

I also thought JK engaged in some pure pithiliciousness right here:

the FBI, CIA, and the Obama White House colluded and meddled to tilt the outcome and, having failed spectacularly, then labored frantically to cover up their misdeeds with further misdeeds.

Although some people believe the enemies are punched out and punch drunk, I on the other hand believe they are animals cornered and this makes them very dangerous at this time. If it keeps going the way it is they will likely try to pull off some sort of “nuclear option”.

What could it be? Dow crash? War?

Regardless, I keep thinking about Frank Zappa’s quote:

The illusion of freedom will continue as long as it’s profitable to continue the illusion. At the point where the illusion becomes too expensive to maintain, they will just take down the scenery, they will pull back the curtains, they will move the tables and chairs out of the way and you will see the brick wall at the back of the theater.

Who has the real power? We’re about to find out.

One way, or another.

I’m beginning to believe Sessions was in the wrong camp on this issue. He’s keeping a low profile, hoping that Trump doesn’t notice that his hands aren’t too clean. I’d love to see him go to jail with the rest of the failed coup operatives. Once in the slammer maybe Bubba and Jose can teach Jeffrey boy the wonders of smoking a joint.

BTW, I’m thinking the local democratic precinct captain will be visiting Kunstler soon asking him to hand over his Democratic registration card. Kunstler just doesn’t seem to want to join the liberal crazy parade.

Doug

Love this! Kunstler is right-on this time (for a nice change).

IMHO-A pasty guy but for a simple twist of fate would have him in the priesthood smoking some alter boys. Sessions has past the point of getting on the stick. He needs to get out of the way.

Huggermugger and maelstrom are two words that I doubt I’ve ever read in the same article.

It will be interesting to see how this all plays out, but I’ve been saying that for over a year and so far nothing much really has played out publicly.

An interesting bunch of events for sure. On one hand I thought Trumpster was the perfect patsy for the economic tsunami that is coming. An outsider who’d take the blame and thus keep folks like him from assuming the presidential mantle for generations to come.

Now I think that the end game is to keep the puppet masters that Trumpster has discovered from being exposed to the general population. Kinda’ like enjoying hot dogs for years and then you finally read the ingredients and you get sick to your stomach .

Alas folks in the end I think all the players will return to their perspective corners of the ring. Each claiming victory and unless someone goes to the scorecard that is where it will remain.

I don’t anticipate that anyone will be wearing a jump suit and sporting matching silver colored bracelets. Jail for these folks doesn’t happen…only the little people go to jail . So give up the pipe dream that Comey,The Hilldabeast or Obozo is going to jail…on that you can Book It Dan-O .

Stucky

Some people actually think Moby Dick is about whaling. Some say it’s about obsession, purpose, the human condition, challenging people to redefine their expectations, good vs evil, and even God.

Maybe.

But, it was really an allegory about banks and their destructive power. Betchya never read that before.

“The story is moving very fast now”. Really? I still see a whole lot of nothing. It is a farce.
