Couple shoots 3 would-be robbers outside DeKalb grocery store, police say

DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. – Crime scene tape remained up late into the night Friday at the scene of a shopping center shooting.

Three would-be robbers are in the hospital after the couple they targeted pulled a gun and fought back.

“It was chaos,” a witness told Channel 2’s Carl Willis. “I saw the guy was shot. I saw him on the floor, shot.”

The witness told Willis she came close to being caught right in the middle of a shootout herself.

“I remember I forgot something, so I went back to the store and I heard shots,” the witness said. “I just missed it.”

Investigators said three people followed a couple out of the grocery store along Wesley Chapel Road and into the parking lot.

“We believe that there may have been some sort of crime that was intended to happen at that time, whether it was a robbery or a carjacking, we really don’t know right now,” said Shiera Campbell with the DeKalb County Police Department.

But that group didn’t count on the would-be victims being armed.

There was an exchange of gunfire, but police said all three of those who were shot were the alleged suspects.

One was checked into a hospital for help. The two others were found on scene.

“(The suspect) was conscious, but there was a lot of blood. There was a trail of blood. He must have dragged himself into Kroger,” the witness told Willis.

As NewsChopper 2 flew overhead, its advanced high-definition camera spotted a handgun in the parking lot.

From the ground, Willis spotted multiple cars that were hit by stray bullets.

“There was a great risk of people being shot and a great risk of being killed,” Campbell said. “People are lucky that no one else was hit.”

“It was awful. Really awful,” the witness said.

Watch, this will end up going into the gun grabbers statistics and arguments to claim we need more gun control.

Rule #1 for driving through ATL: Never stop ANYWHERE off I-20 inside I-285.

Did not hear any mention last night if the man had a concealed carry permit, but this would be an occasion for doing everything possible to end up on that jury to let him off if he did not. You should NEVER have to BEG the government for permission to defend yourself or possess the means to do so…..especially in the Atlanta metro area.

I drive through ATL on I-20, right past this location about once every three months.

What a bunch of monkey business! Unrelated, in 1974 I did a stint with DeKalb County police studying forensics. The highlight of the experience was seeing the shaved monkey in a glass jar that had been claimed to be a space alien. The DeKalb county mounties always gave us slack around Emory.

I had a few encounters with them, one leading to being hauled off to the the slammer around midnight. But the renta cops who busted my friend and I were humiliated when we appeared before the judge – the father-in-law of one of our class mates – and I had military orders and a Captain’s commission in my hands. The same friend and I were out and about, cruising in my 64 Corvair. We decided to have a beer at Manuel’s Tavern in DeKalb County. I was buying, as he was short on funds that night. He had told me he was flat broke. We quaffed the beer and were leaving when two black men asked us for a ride. Mein Freund, Herr future doctor, at the time was a reactionary democrat to piss off his SAC father and fascist German immigrant grandparents. I looked at him, who once proudly showed off his black girlfriend – a legitimate intelligent hottie. He gave me the look – that he was not a racist and did not discriminate on the basis of skin color.

So I said, sure, hop in the back of the two door Corvair. Well, we learned something that night about content of character. We were a minute into the ride when one of the hitch hikers asked if we had change for a 20. I grok’d quick, answering I only had $8 or so in change (juke box money) and immediately said my bud was broke, begging beer from me.

The riders then decided to get out. One handed the snub nose to the other and said, here you take it.

I have a few tales of mere existence from Little Five Points, just inside the border of DeKalb County. Oh, if Druid Hills and Lullwater could talk….I know a few classmates who would have been jailed…saved by my tight lips courtesy of hypnotic suggestion.

I spent Christmas holiday three years ago in Dekalb County, rewalking the path of the Lord of Misrule, Dooley. Much has changed in 45 years and much has stayed the same.

To bad our friends in England never get good news like this.

Since the Brits are now totally disarmed, maybe one day we’ll see a feel good story about a good citizen taking out a bad guy with a bag of fish and chips.
