Hopefully the Weather Channel and the NHC stop their theatrics and cease reporting ridiculous windspeed forecasts for every hurricane ( while it is still far out to sea). People need to be warned but not panicked even if it is good for ratings.

The Weather Channel has no reason to exist.

Unit, are you saying there is a conspiracy to over-hype weather news for better ratings?

Why was this storm engeneered? What is their purpose?

I sat out the eyewall of a storm, a “cat 1”. On the teevee they were saying sustained winds of 70 mph, with gusts of 82. Had an accurate anemometer where i was, and the highest winds I saw were 55 mph. The eye passed right over me. Wasn’t much worse than a bad thunderstorm we get in the south sometimes, just lasted a while longer. But it was a giant nothing burger.

I saw the guy on TV in Galveston after Harvey. He was standing in the middle of the street in chest deep water, going on about how the whole city was basically underwater, when it was just a few blocks. He could have walked 30 feet in an direction and it wasnt any higher than his knees. I walked past him at about 100 yards in ankle deep water. A couple blocks over and there was no standing water. The chest deep water he was in was the result of a lot of rain, yes, but it was also the result of poor city planning and a lack of adequate drainage. Not that big of a deal. Nothing but sensationalism. More fake news.

This shit is actually dangerous, too. Now that I’ve seen their bullshit, in person, twice, plus more examples on TV, how likely am I, or others with similar thoughts, to actually evacuate in the face of a truly bad storm? I see these things now and just yawn. Another Katrina would likely fuck my house up, bad, and riding that out at home isn’t a risk I’d take, but these clowns treat every storm, even a mild and small cat I, the same way they do an actually dangerous storm. Hard to judge an actual threat when every little fart in a rain cloud is described as the apocalypse.

This morning Stephanie Abrams (Weather Channel) reporting from Wilmington, found a tree that had been blown over and did her broadcast from there. Then she held up an awning (small – 4 feet across, lightweight, non-structural) that she called a “section of roof” (yes, technically, but seriously), and then held up other items like an exterior light and small mailbox that she and her camerman/producer had obviously scoured the area looking for an collecting before the broadcast. When she was done, they cut to Jim Cantore in Moorehead City who was being pounded by rain, only to have him declare that a cowling from a roof vent or similar had just fallen right near his cameraman (no shots of the metal object). Hey, in heavy winds, shit is going to go flying. That is NOT a reason to declare that the end of the world as we know it is upon the coast. Indeed, the drama over the past week or more has been spectacular. The disappointment they must all have been feeling was clearly countered by their enthusiastic acting out of the non-tragedy that was unfolding before them. Sad that they don’t think that honest reporting, good science, and something other than emotional histrionics will keep us all safe and informed.

“If it bleeds….it leads” as they say.

On Tuesday, Rush Limbaugh said…Trust me on this folks, this is not the kind of storm the media is telling you about. It’s nothing like they are saying.

It may not have been those exact words..but close.

It’s too bad some weather babe can’t stand in the storm buck nekkid and claim the wind blew her clothes off. Now that’d up the ratings! I might even get cable again if there were a Naked Weather Babe Channel.

i haven’t paid much attention to the storm, i’ve been outside most of the day pumping water after massive storms the last 2 days–
however, seeing as how it tracked against the coast for so long i suspect that there will be massive property damage-
the wife of a friend is from the town of bellhaven, which is north of jacksonville–they were watching the news & saw a shot of bellhaven & water was at window level in parts of the town–
you guys to the west & then the north better get ready for some serious rain–

different storm–the storm that is scaring me is issac– he is starting to make the turn into the gulf, and if he survives the current unfavorable conditions & makes it into the gulf he could be dangerous–

Somebody needs to sue the The Weather Channel and the other alarmists- if only to make it clear that they are really just entertainment venues and aren’t legally bound to report the truth.

Sort of like that fan who sued the NFL over rigged games 10 or so years back. The fan lost his lawsuit- because the judge’s ruling made it clear the NFL was just an entertainment venue and under no obligation to provide non-rigged games.

For really good dramatic acting, the weather guy should wade out into the ocean and call it the storm surge.

This storm was an interesting experience for us as we were directly in the original predicted path. Although we are inland and have lived here for a quarter century, the women were almost all frazzled, nervous wrecks. Three days before landfall was even made, my mother in law was in tears sobbing about how her townhome was going to be in 10′ of water. Her home is on a hill with no history of flooding. Most of the guys were fairly level headed about it, though I did notice the liberal guys were more concerned than the conservative guys. It really clicked – those people who are more prone to be manipulated by the media and their circle of friends (i.e. their personal information network) about a pending storm are the same people who are easily swayed by the same media and friends on other topics – especially politics.

Yeah, if you have such serious medical issues, that having your way out blocked by 2″ of water or trees down is going to be a problem…….then GET THE FUCK OUT when they tell you to. Who are these people who think that personal valet service is the job of first responders??
