I am currently stateside. It has been a few years, and I had to take care of some business. My wife and I have revisited some of our favorite spots, and caught up with some family. We have driven through some of God’s finest works. There is no more beautiful landscape anywhere on earth than the west coast, Route 66, southern Colorado, the Badlands, etc.
That said, I say this most sincerely, and with great sorrow. Those of you who can, get out now.
What I have seen leads me to depression, and there is no road back for the US, in my opinion.
The blinkered people, the tax collectors roadside (police everywhere collecting taxes), the tax collecting at every opportunity, the welfare state, the severe drop in service at restaurants, the tattoos, the green hair, the lard-asses everywhere, the severe over-population of great swathes of the country, the hideous media out only to inflame, and not to report, the aged and infirm working at whatever jobs they can find, the homeless everywhere, the beggars, the filth roadside, the severe health issues seen at every turn (people everywhere too fat to walk, carrying oxygen, diabetes inflicted, toothless), casinos one after another, hideous roads, etc. ad naseum, lead me to but one conclusion: the US is fucked. It grieves me to say it. It disgusts me to see it.
Of all of these things, the most serious is the blinkered people. They have no insight, no curiosity, no sense of understanding of the world, no vision of anything outside their tiny bubble of existence.
There are far too many people. California has 40 million, almost double that of Australia, which is more or less the size of the lower 48. I struggle to breathe around such masses.
I can feel the desperation wherever I go, but the people cannot see that they cause their own issues by living far beyond their means, with leased cars and pickups, and mortgaged to the hilt.
I spoke with many relying on pensions, who do not realize the precariousness of their positions. I ask how well funded are their plans, and they stare at me mouths agape, unable to even grasp the question.
I spoke to many business owners, who are so angry it defies belief. To a man, they are wanting to throw in the towel. Government has choked them to death, and dealing with employees is killing them day by day. One has seven lawsuits going, and has been sued 25 times. He services equipment for other companies. Whenever an idiot maims someone with the equipment he services, he gets roped into the lawsuit. The equipment never fails, but some idiot, not employed by him, runs over someone, and he gets sued, guilty by association.
The immigration policy of the US is helping destroy the country. As a reference point, Australia takes a couple hundred thousand immigrants a year, talent based. Talent based. Compare that to the US insanity.
On and on it goes.
So I say this. Get out if you can. I recommend New Zealand or Australia. Others might recommend somewhere else. These countries have issues, but they are a few decades behind those that the US has. If not that, then if possible move away from the big cities.
I am sorry it has come to this.
We left the United States ten years ago. These days we live in the mountains of Northern Appalachia, and I expect we’ll get even less attention after whatever collapse is coming than we do now. Where my people are, there is my home.
You were one of the contributors here that I always admired, long before I began to comment myself. You’re knowledgeable, intelligent, hard working and honest and even when you dragged me through the coals I still respected you. I’m not surprised that you’ve made a go of it in your new home and it sounds as if the change has mellowed you somewhat and that is a good thing. You should be proud of your choices and while I concur with your observations of what has become of the country formerly known as the USA you have to understand that not everyone will share your strategic vision.

Hey, V V, I heard about that this morning, not from PJ. There was a facebook and Twitter account called Guillotine that has gone private since yesterday calling for the same thing. It supposedly had 15K followers. My grandson is here so I may not get to it but I will post more later if I can.
I made the decision to leave right after 9 11 … the full nazi takeover of the country … an easy choice … america is not a country, it is an idea that the common man should be free from oppressive government. I had to hang around and see my parents off to their reward and qualify for my pension, then it was time to leave. I could not save my children by staying, so I left and have made it easy for them to leave. Americans gave up their freedom without much of a fuss. I’ve moved from the US and back again ten years later, and it is not something to be undertaken lightly. The bureaucracy involved on both ends was extremely daunting, the time-frames were long (12-18 mo.), and the expenses were high, not including the expense of either moving everything you own (we shipped our cars) OR selling low and buying higher on the other side.
Australia has closed its retirement and retirement/investor visas, anyway, so no luck there for most of the readers of this blog, who, I’d guess, are over 50. The Australian immigration criteria change (i.e. get more restrictive) with some regularity. Last time I looked, the “low end” investor visa required $5 million, but these are “no longer being issued” The investor visas which are being issued require $10 million.

I’m a heavily-armed native Floridian whose first ancestor in North America arrived in 1658. Over the last 60 years, I’ve watched the steady destruction of the states politically, economically & socially, as correctly observed by the author. In 1994, I decided to excape and obtained permanent resident visas for Australia (not easy), figuring it was white, English-speaking and free. When I visited, I was disgusted to find that Australia has most of the same problems, plus many more. The coast highway from Newcastle to Brisbane was a disaster. There was one small stretch of modern interstate highway. But, when I was finally able to get up to a decent speed, there was a tax collector waiting to ambush & rob me. There is not enough water to support the population and the place is “ate up” with invasive species, like cane toads and rabbits. After stupidly abandoning their white Australia policy, they’ve been invaded by Chinques and brownies, though not as badly as the Mexican/Central American invasion of the states. I was there when the federal gubmint used the isolated shooting incident in Tasmania to effectively confiscate all private citizens’ firearms. (This was the deal-breaker for me.) The blokes I met at the “bottle shop” sternly reminded me over beers that the Bill of Rights is uniquely American; they have no such constitutional protections. I’ve come to the conclusion that the Anglosphere and Europe are flocked, Africa’s a $#!+#01e, much of Asia is an overpopulated polluted mess and a whitey can never assimilate there. This leaves South America for Plan C, where some nations are more European, Christian, Caucasian than the states. Chile probably offers the most political & economic freedom.
I stayed in Florida after giving up on Australia, but am now executing Plan D – “opting out” and cruising the Caribbean on a 42 foot sailing yacht. If a gubbermint doesn’t treat me well, they will find my boat missing from the lagoon in the morning, having sailed on the midnight tide.

Burticus. – you make some good points. But everything in context. Oz has 24 million people, and is the size of the lower 48 states of the US, give or take. If you expect US quality interstates with that population and size, you are fooling yourself.
Oz did not confiscate all guns. Far from it. I and my neighbors have plenty. There is not a gun culture in the city, but we of the land have heaps.
Oz has fewer water issues overall than parts of the US I have been in, with far better quality of water. cA, etc., are toast. No Australian city is in water trouble. Oz has lots of water, but it is up north. Oz folks also catch and use a lot of the rain that falls. But it is still a very dry nation overall.
About 8 percent of Oz is non- white, mostly Asian. Compare that to the US. Boy howdy, no comparison, right? The US has around 5% AsaAsianian population. And I kid you not, I would far, far rather have Asians, educated and skilled, than what the US has.
Oz taxes are high, but more or less on par with the US. The police do less confiscations, though. Oz has a higher labor participation rate and is younger by far. Oz is generally more progressive than most, but saying that it is much more interested in controlling its borders. How is that working out in the US?
Aussies seem far healthier than Americans, as I wander around. Far healthier.
There are many of the same issues in Oz as in other advanced economy. But there is plenty of room to escape people.
The events in Washington DC this week just reinforce Llpoh’s prediction of SHTF. There is a lot of disagreement about what we do about it. Personally I don’t think moving to Australia is the answer. Our primary fear is death. One way or another all our other fears and worries are either derived from our fear of death, or they are of overall insignificance. There are millions of ways to die. We all go through life in search of that which will ultimately do us in, mostly believing we are doing something else, while focused on something else. We are all going to die. Nobody gets out alive. Run where you will, but the grim reaper will still find you.
I would prefer to put death off for as long as I have a decent quality of life. I have gotten out of debt, moved out of the city, worked toward a more self reliant existence, but my focus has always been on obtaining a better quality of life. If it turns out that these decisions help to extend my days on the planet I will consider that a fringe benefit, but survival, come hell or high water has not been my focus.
We can read the tea leaves, but it is impossible to know the future for sure. The only sure fact we know about the future is that death awaits. I intend to spend my remaining time wringing as much enjoyment and satisfaction from each day that I can, and less time fretting about what is to come. Whether or not I make it through to the other side of whatever shitstorm is coming, I hope I can make a contribution along the way that will be of some benefit to others.

These people are in the Stone Age when it comes to processing paper. They think the more paper you have the more people you can employ. Most are not qualified to wipe their ass let alone deal with paperwork. When they don’t feel like doing shit they ask for more documentation. Massively irritating.
That said , they are the friendliest of people. They will absolutely leave you alone if you are not a trouble maker. People here mind their own business, nobody telling u what color to paint your house or how high your grass can grow. No such thing as strata titled neighborhoods. Taxes are low, weather is warm 12 months a year.
And did I tell the best part, people leave u the fuck alone.

I don’t know of any country a american can get residency and a work visa in. unless you have a pension or are wealthy ,you cannot even get residency . has anyone gone to work in australia, NZ or Canada? I would like to heare about it.
Re NZ, getting a job offer is the hard part (an NZ employer has to attest that no local resident is available to fill the job he’s offering to you). IF you can get a bona fide job offer, getting a work visa is just a formality of a day or two.
The above has no legal implications as to your getting NZ residency (i.e. the right to stay indefinitely). Pagmatically, however, if you are a personable and productive individual, under age 50, you can very likely parlay a work visa into residency. It would certainly be easier to do so while working in NZ, than applying for residency from outside the country.

Well, I have to tell you I went to a Walmart and I saw what you saw, LLPOH. Since my unexpected illness 6 weeks ago, I literally do not leave our land except for very brief outings to doctors. Even a brief visit to the grocery can be kept to a minimum of human interaction in a small community like ours.
But, since we needed a few things not readily available, I agreed to visit the big town of Cape Girardeau and go to Walmart. While inside for just a couple of items (I won’t buy much food there) I looked at the people around me shopping and realized that most of the people are really, really fat.
Not just big woman large (I consider myself to be a large frame woman and until this recent illness I’ve carried a good 30 to 50 pounds “extra” but I don’t think many would have called me “fat”… maybe “stout?”
Since I’ve lost a lot more than I even think about now, I’ll just say that because of your commentary, I intentionally paid attention to the people around me while I was in a crowd.
People are rude and ugly here. Especially when they are in a stressful crowd situation. That includes me. I need to stay in the country.
If you inhabit a nice part of the U.S. and live well within your means, then you have it made. Worrying about this, that, or the other thing simply isn’t relevant if you approach each day as potentially your last [which it is].
You live amid human beings, so alter your reality to account for such, get off your ass and help somebody out, and you will feel much better. Pick up and leave and you will find that your present miseries will follow you wherever you go.

It is part of a larger “community” of folks in the hinterlands who intend to survive, regroup and secure their boundaries.

I am currently in another flyover town – a biggish regional city. The local paper is advertising manufacturing jobs for $8 an hour, bus driver jobs for $10 an hour, administration jobs for $13. Seriously, what the fuck?
I am a believer in market sets the rates, but I do not think I could stomach paying those wages. I would rather not run a business than provide jobs where the people will struggle so severely. That said, I have said for some time that the lower half of the workforce is going to struggle mightily in the modern economy. I just would hope that even the dullest tool in the shed could generate more than $8 an hour in value.
In 1996 I had to leave UPS after 13 years because I was part time and there was teamster strike. I was admin and non-union but after 4 weeks of the management trying to keep us busy they had to lay us off. I was making $13 and hour. I needed full time work and there was naturally a freeze on any kind of job change. I left and I never recovered to that level of buying power with the benefits I had there.
$13 in 1996 would be like $20+ today. With bennies, I have no beef payin that, which I do. But $8 for manufacturing? Man, the world is going to be a hard taskmaster.
