Feeling the Heat Yet?

Guest Post by Jim Kunstler

The loyal opposition is the party out-of-power in a polity that stands divided into two factions — assuming the polity can still function as such, which, apparently, it no longer can. Historically in the USA, this used to allow for the tempered regulation of changing conditions during two hundred years of a rapidly evolving techno-industrial economy that pumps out more goodies year after year while the population grows and grows.

Much of America, political leaders especially, assume that this arc of growing goodies and more people will just keep trending up forever. They are just plain mistaken about that. Rather, the whole industrialized, wired-up world is rolling over into the greatest contraction ever witnessed. The only thing that’s postponed the recognition of this reality is the profligate borrowing of money, or shall we say “money” — data entries that pretend to represent secure wealth. This amounts to borrowing from the future to pay for how you live today. Of course, the act of borrowing is based on the supposition that there will enough future productive activity to allow you to pay back your borrowings with interest. This is obviously not the case now, in the face of epochal contraction, especially of affordable energy to keep things running hot.

Thus, the US has decided to get through the approaching winter by setting its house on fire. The two political parties alternately in charge of things are driving around the burning house, stopping at intervals to run Chinese Fire Drills. We call these “elections.” Both parties pretend that the burning house is not a problem. Mr. Trump, aka the Golden Golem of Greatness, has taken “ownership” of the rising temperature in the burning house. “Hey, at least you’re not freezing now.” He and his party have been piling all the furniture inside the house on the fire, to keep the heat up, rather heedless that flames are starting to shoot out of the attic.

The other party has no quibble with burning down the house. In fact, this has been the Democratic Party’s sovereign remedy for problems since the War in Vietnam, when it was explicit policy to burn down villages in order to save them. Seemed to work, until it didn’t — and then we just tried to forget about the whole sorry exercise. It still haunts them, though. So these days they’ve decided to destroy the culture that abided inside the burning house. They’re taking down the draperies and collecting all the clothing and tchotchkes and framed photographs of loved ones, and piling them on top of the burning furniture, doing their bit to keep the heat up.

You might infer from all this that no matter whatever else the Republican and Democratic parties might do now is not going to prevent the house from burning down. In a month, or six months, or eighteen months, they will be left standing stunned in the ashes. How’d this happen!?! Even the clown cars they were riding around in will be smoldering wrecks. And then the rest of the people of this land can sift through ruins, seeking a few trinkets or useful tools with some remaining value. These people will be entitled to call themselves “survivors.” And they will act like survivors should act: by earnestly assessing how the house happened to burn down, and using what few assets and resources they still have at hand to shelter-in-place, while they draw up plans for a more sensible house.

If there was a true loyal opposition in this land, they would have called the fire department long ago. But they were too busy texting out their contrived grievances and sending cute Instagrams of each other in pussy hats to friends and allies while the flames of the burning house reflected off the screens of their iPhones. The vaunted technology did not save the day. It only stole their attention.

If it happens that the Democrats lose the midterm elections a few weeks ahead, they will jump up and down and holler that the elections were stolen from them, that somebody meddled and colluded to deprive them of victory, and that will amount to throwing just enough gasoline on the still-burning house for one final glorious burst of heat and flame before the rafters crash through the floor. Welcome to the Long Emergency.

Indeed…Trump still thinks, or at least pretends to think, that he can make this whole leftist welfare state America work…We will find out sometime in the next 20 years that a large population of useless but violent 3d world invaders is unaffordable, and then the fun will start.

Energy is needed to fuel the future growth. Too bad there won’t be enough. While most will argue we do have enough, sadly, we don’t. That will be apparent in 3-5 years.

I’m more-and-more astonished at the frequency with which I hear even commentators in the ‘alt’ world that US is “energy independent, etc, etc. etc.”. If anyone should not be fooled, it should be these … but it seems they are. Hey, we use (MOL) 20 million barrels per day and ‘produce’ 12 million barrels per day. So, even though we do ‘export’ some refined products and weights, on balance we have to import 40% of our oil use. That is not a surplus.

First, whenever the Trump Republicans even pretended to be responsible, the Democrats (Commies) cause such problems that Republicans immediately gave up. Second, Useful Idiots burning their own house down to describe our society cannibalizing itself is a good analogy for the hyperinflation coming from massive money printing, but the Communist deserve to suffer the most and they will be the least prepared and they will suffer the most. Third, the inflation will be global and the USA Banksters will be blamed, to the point of “reverse” warfare (against US). Fourth, The Eddy Minimum Little Ice Age has begun while the Useful Idiots stupidly crow day and night about Global Warming; Preppers will survive for a while but millions of Useful Idiot Schleppers will freeze and starve to death (just as TPTB planned). The first modern global food and fuel shortages are about one year away. Fifth, TPTB have given God the middle finger and He has removed His Hand of Grace and Mercy from them and great Natural Disasters will occur: New Madrid, San Andreas, Cascadia, Hudson River, etc, earthquakes; Yellowstone, Long Valley, Mt Shasta, St Helens etc volcanoes; South West Drought; North East Snowpacks; Hurricanes and floods; Revolution & Plagues. Sixth, the Righteous will survive, Repent, have Revival & experience Restoration.

A rather grim prediction which I fear to be true. The world will probably experience a major reduction of the world’s population.

What made you think their bodies achieved escape velocity by just starving and freezing? I hope you haven’t been studying Science with BB.

Per Revelations, a reduction of nearly one-third. Over 2 billion.

Kunstler is correct minus one simple fact – Donald Trump was elected to manage the bankruptcy of this country. The entitlement programs, just like the state pensions are going away and there isn’t anything anyone can do to stop it minus massive printing which would finish off the destruction of the currency.

No money and worthless money are equal as far as I’m concerned though many of our current crop of elites are just whistling past the graveyard when they state otherwise. There is no way out of this.

I got a piece of propaganda from Social Security yesterday; they have noticed I’m getting old and want to tell me that what I get depends on when I choose to retire. Either way, they want me to notify them when I turn 65 so I can be aligned for Medicare.
I view them as delusional. Assuming I live past TSHTF, the resulting Crunch (loss of faith in the currency / currency collapse) will make anything I get from SS almost worthless, if not actually so; those pictures of Germans with wheelbarrows full of Deutschemarks going to the grocery will become modern, although they may be electronic dollars instead.
In any case my “normal retirement at full benefits” is still over six years away, and I think the Crunch / TSHTF is just months, maybe a couple of years. So yeah, thanks a lot, but I’ll believe in my “benefits” when I actually receive them, and not before.

James, don’t wait till 65. Get it as soon as you can-62. Something is better than nothing and the cross over is I think 81 (when waiting overtakes not waiting).

I like the airplane analogy. Others have used it, but I’m thinking of how Ann Barnhart described it years ago. The engines blew out quite a while back and we’ve been gliding.

I don’t know about y’all, but even if the gravity hasn’t been felt yet, I think I’m seeing the tops of the trees getting pretty close.

Fasten those seatbelts. It will be a hard landing.

Maybe if Hillary moves to the back of the plane we can get the nose up.

FDR came up with the idea and Hitler imitated him. Americans tried to sell that plan to the Vietnamese. They wanted the villagers to live in fortified camps.

Next, they will try to sell the same idea to Americans. Welcome to FEMA camp.

We should bone up on tunnels.

The US probably does. 10 years ago 50% of our electric power came from coal. Those reserves still exist and would last 100 or more years at the same rate we were using them before. Natural gas production has soared since then and become cheaper ( and emits less CO2) so it has replaced coal as our top electric power generation fuel. We have plenty of that too. Oil production almost doubled over the same period.

Its Asia and Europe that will be short energy especially if the US bans exports ( likely save to close allies) if a global shortage develops.

With Debt to GDP at around 105% we probably have 10 or 15 years to go before it becomes a serious problem like Italy’s.

Greetings,
Yes but that 105% debt doesn’t take into account the massive unfunded liabilities like Social Security, long term Veteran’s Care, Medicare or Medicaid.

It could all go up in flames at any moment.

True but those social security and medicare bills aren’t due next year or even, for the most part, the next decade. We can’t really worry about 2050, that is what ‘climate change’ people ask us to do. 2050 and beyond will just have to take care of themselves. Rising interest rates ( itself a reflection of likely debt trajectories) could ‘get us’ a lot sooner if we don’t make some effort to control spending.

Ah, the “CUNTsler” strikes again. His excellent use of all the literary devices and extensive vocabulary is truly AMAZING – wish I had said skills. And since I seemed to have been banned from commenting on his site, I must DISSENT on the few remaining sites still not subject to the many sites still hosting the MODERATED “DisqusTING”. I suspect that said self-acknowledged “DemonRAT” espousing a “Long Emergency” has NO experience of a protracted “kinetic engagement” , i.e. WAR.

At this point in time, the losing side will be the side first hanged. Any surviving remnant of the losing side will be those who can get the hell out of the country as quickly as possible.

That’s a well written piece. It reminds me of the image of Waco burning in Janet Reno’s glasses… a timeless 90’s meme.
