A Fun Wip Wondering (I hope)

I love cars. My father and I have shared the love of classic hot rods since I was 10. His whole life he had either a complete or incomplete project car. Everything from Camaros to BMW M series cars.

I wonder what other TBPers have OR wish they had as their dream car. I curious how many TBPers favor classic cars. Please post photos of your car or the car you wish you had. OR BOTH.

Below is my Christmas card for 2018. It is my father’s truck. It’s a pretty badass truck.

I got to drive my cousin’s Cuda a full mile through town at 20 mph speed limit when he’d kindly agreed to do my boyfriend’s 68 Road Runner (yep 383/Holley 4Brl) the local honor of having attempted to beat the unbeatable in the quarter mile.

It was really something to feel the pounding potential of that engine as I idled through town, tapping the brake from time to time to keep it under 30 mph.

The Barricuda kicked the Road Runner’s ass, leaving it behind immediately, but I got the nod for having brought the big dog out to play with us kids. (My cousin was ten years older and fixed up hot rods as a hobby.)

His car looked very much like that except there was some art on the front fender.

I drove a 73 Vega for a while, then upgraded to a 74 Datsun pickup that probably would have still been running if I had not hydroplaned into that old 75 Ford pickup’s bumper back when a bumper could stop a deer, not just guide it in.

My cousin’s grand success in life gave me a certain bump in status. Well, for a week or so anyway.

It was his son who overdosed and died of a prescription painkiller addiction and overdose two years ago. He was five years older than my son.

He is letting his grandson restore old farm trucks rather than hot rods.

’70-’72 Buick Skylark Gran Sport, 455 air intake, Ralleye package. Bonus, if manual trans and a convertible top. Fire engine red, or sky blue. Wish I had a photo to post. Getting a chubby just thinking about that car. Usually see a couple during the Woodward Dream Cruise every August.
Google it, if you love old classics.
Had 3 Skylarks thru the years.
All gone now.
Different priorities.

All mine … 330ci supercharged V8. 2003 Gen 2 Ford F150 Lightning, just over 50k miles and stock except for the K&N intake.
I giggle when I drive it, and cry when I have to fill it up with 93 octane premium. It’s still faster than most and even shames the police interceptors. Gonna cry when it has to be sold.

Would post a picture or link, but seems to be an arcane riddle as to how that crap works here.

Thanks … except mine is colored Police Magnet Red.
The blue ones weren’t on the lot and I couldn’t get close enough to the cordoned-off GT in the showroom floor to steal it.
Love the Ford GT, too. Beat the Euro cars at 24hr. LeMans in the ’60’s and beat their ass AGAIN recently with a modified dual turbo 3.9l motor.
Now THAT’S a car.

Hmmmm….,dream car maybe a s-10 with a cummings diesel conver…..,eh,someone elses dream.Besides the 1977 e100 van on F-250 frame 4×4 I own with 33″ tires/lift ect have had a 442-455/many bad ass 4×4’s/69 Goat/71 T-1 350 Vette drop top, damn the list just goes on forever, don’t even ask about the motorcycles! You can do this stuff when you don’t have kids!

The dream, something very early 70’s/late 60’s 4×4,as to what, not sure yet and may build it or find one close to my desires may buy built price is right and go from there.

I still want also a deisel rabbit pickup, due to just 45 mpg around town, good little chore truck for the small gigs and can convert engine if desired(I will) to run on grease fuel ect.You ever behind a deisel rabbit pickup in New Hampster that smells like french fries you know it’s me!

Whip, your dad and you would kill me I ever got a truck like his, would lift/add a transfer case and front axle/33″-35″ tires ect./perhaps strengthen the frame/the list goes on.I ever do that will do it to a old truck almost ready for the bone yard and bring back to life, would not do to a nice condition one(I think!).

I need to work on body skills, have the mechanic end down well enough for older builds, clean body work and painting skills not in my toolbox yet.

I knew a guy once who had a t-shirt that said “If it’s got tits or tires, you’re in trouble.”

I’ve gone 160 mph on four wheels, 175 on two and 120 on one. If it’s got tits or tires….

starfcker
starfcker

I’m gone 185 on four wheels. 145 on two. And it’s been at least 15 years since I’ve gone 100 miles an hour. And I may never go a 100 miles an hour again in my life. I’ll never pick up another venomous snake. I’m done spearfishing at night. Who am I kidding, I may never go on the roof again. And I’m okay with all that.

Iwasntbornwithenufmiddlefingers
Iwasntbornwithenufmiddlefingers

160 mph on 4 wheels, got a photo radar ticket doing 232 kph on 2 wheels, and i was in a jet trainer doing mach 1, and in a boat doing 102mph. I only thought i might die in the boat. 70 is to fast in a boat.

My hotrod was a 78 firebird with a 400 ram air 3 from a gto. My present hotrod is a 2016 polaris ace 900 4wheeler. 70 mph through the woods in 4 wheel lock slinging mud 50 feet in the air.

TC
TC

Yeah, agree with you about boats. It’s kinda like driving a car, but without steering or brakes.

I do still enjoy an occasional track day where 140-150 on a straight isn’t unusual. Don’t remember the last time going that fast on the street. Having a family definitely ratchets down the testosterone.

I am not adept enough to attach a photo, but I am on my umpteenth project, a 1976 Jeep J10 4×4 shortbed. My first car was a 1961 Impala sport coupe, 348 tri-power, Roman red with a white stripe. Wish I still had that one… I have been fortunate enough to have been the owner of a Ford Mustang 1965 GT350, 1955 Ford Pickup (a favorite) several 1960’s Chevy pickups, and several others which would be worth WAY more now than they were when I had them.

steven,
the 1st vehicle i had when i graduated high school in 1976 was a ’65 chevy stepside shortbed–a 3 speed on the column,a 250(i think) engine–
i’m 5’11” & back then weighed about 195–big as i was,i could fit into the engine compartment–
a great little truck but it blew head gaskets like crazy–
about 4 years later,i worked in a restaurant while going to school-i closed on sat nights, not getting home till 1 or 2am,so i always slept late on sunday–
one sunday i rolled out about 11am & my roommate & his gf were coming back in from having gone out 4 coffee–
“i thought you were gone, where’s your truck?”
look outside,no truck–
i called the sheriff’s dept, this was pre 911 days when a deputy actually answered–“i’d like to report a stolen truck.”
“boy, how far behind are you in your payments?”
“i own it sir.”
the deputy took a report & that’s the last i’ve ever heard of it–

A real-life dream car is one I drove for a long time: a classic Saab 900s hatchback.
comment image

I abandoned it in Italy as it just had too low of a clearance for the area we were moving to. Was great driving in snow&ice, but only really in consistent-surface conditions. Had leather ‘n’ stuff, and I adored the dashboard and controls: so clean and “readable”.. back when people cared about ‘user interfaces’:

Hatchback was a bottomless maw. I fit a whole overstuffed Crate&Barrel sofa in it one time. Used it for car-camping (sleeping) more than once.

Dream car I want is an old-school Fiat Panda 4×4:

Untolerant

I knew this guy and all he wanted to do was talk about his Saab 900. One day I was talking to him and he said he wrecked it. I told him that was too bad but I was in a hurry and had to go. But he just kept talking, until I finally said: “Listen pal, I really don’t have time to hear your Saab story.

Man, I love that Panda 4×4. Wonder how it would do in desert sand?

Because that’s what I drove in high school.
One of my teachers said, “Hey Jim, I saw you driving down the road the other day. Two heads, driving the same car.”
Those were the days, left hand on the wheel, right hand elsewhere. You couldn’t fit a piece of paper between the gal and me.

hey kc

I checked out the pictures and gotta say that restore you’re doing is awesome! That is a lot of work but truck is going to be amazing.. thinking I might do something like that as well. Nothing as extensive as that but something I can run on streets. been doing some research and front end I-Beam suspension can be traded out for a Crown Vic.. My wife wants me to get off the couch and do something. Might be crazy for me to attempt but I am crazy now.

How much worse can it get?

I have been following this on local website. Does 5 grand seem too much. I suspect it is as the ad has been up quite a while. Question would be how much would it cost to do mild resto on something like this..

Hey Rins,

thanks for the compliments. 5K, could be high, or could be going price, so hard to tell. Comes down to your love of the truck as is for the price willing to pay. as for what it will cost to build is another question of what your final goal is. how high your skill set is, how deep you want to go down a rabbit hole. (meaning, what secrets the truck will reveal as you peel away at it.) finding parts can be a challenge, making parts even more challenging unless you are creative and have imagination. I am far from any expert on building cars, however I do have 3 good resources that I can call for advice when stumped, and not to mention we did all work ourselves (except the pipe and muffler work), that alone saves a huge bite from leaving a wallet. 1 of the biggest things is time that is consumed planning, gathering, building and changing the mind. if you go for it, don’t be in a hurry, plan and think it all through.expect things to not fit, and not be easy. but it is very enjoyable journey. make a budget, then double it…. (what you don’t spend on the project you can have fun burning it the tank)!! cheers

(and 1 other thing I will add, find a ford forum or truck forum to ask questions and learn from those who gone before. especially join before buying a project, the guys can advise you on what to look for and beware of before you buy, not to mention market value of what you looking at) good luck

damn, some nice cars, what the hell were we thinking selling them?!

The ranger progress looks nice,as for a FJ-40,while love em they have too hard core/insanely rich it seems following.I would like to do one if I could find a nice frame/would go V-8/lift/lockers ect. along with a fiberglass body.I know with body would lose the ambulance doors in rear and perhaps crack tough 4-wheeling but they have gotten better as time passes by.I also love the older jeeps and a cj/scrambler/j-10 ect would all work for me along with older willys’ pickups, happy builds and dreaming till you can do a build!

Wife’s former boss owned a Turbo Coupe. I used to maintain their fleet of glass trucks as a side job. Drove it several times- my first introduction to turbo power (other than diesel trucks I worked on). Sweet car.
My buddy later bought an ’88 SVT Mustang that had the same engine as the T-Bird but a little more power. That was kick ass ride for sure.
