A Modern-Day Paul Revere Not Warning of Noah’s Flood at a Wedding

Over the last three months I’ve attended three weddings.  Whatever getting married in a barn signifies or portends, it’s trending, because that was the case for two out of my last three invitations.  Although one of the earlier ceremonies was held in an actual barn, the wedding and reception facilities where I attended this last Saturday appeared to have been specifically remade for human mammals because the venue was beyond elegant.

Being the very first betrothal I can recall ever attending in the month of December, it was no surprise the weather was bad given this time of year.  Fortunately, however, all of the important people were there.  Again, it wasn’t the storm that mattered that evening, but rather, more importantly, who showed-up for the feast. The accommodations were first class, and with all of the beautiful people in attendance, I commented to another guest it was like being in a movie or, at the very least, at a television awards ceremony.

The next morning one of my offspring texted me the following:

 

Was impressed last night by all the people who came up to you just to chat or for your advice and your handling of what could have been an awkward situation

The awkward situation had to do with the groom’s biological father feeling slighted because he was assigned to sit at my family’s table during the reception meal, instead of the front of the room near his ex-wife.  Of course, he was appointed to sit by me because I’m a peacemaker and blessed are the piecemakers (pun intended).  Anyway, I told him to sit down, shut up, and have a good time.

In response to my progeny’s text, however, I wrote back:

 

Last night was, once again, that typical combination of beauty, elegance, and awkwardness. But once you realize that life is essentially a continuation of high school, it becomes easier to lower your expectations and have a good time

 

The funniest moments of the night occurred when an estranged older uncle announced to his fiftyish-aged niece that “she was looking more and more like her mother every day” and when the groom’s father sat down beside me at the reception (after I said “sit down and shut up”).  He squinted back at me and said: “Don’t ask me any questions.”

 

 

All in all, it was great night and one I’ll look back to with fondness in the hard days ahead; especially the rye-bread, prime-rib, and horse-radish, as we will no doubt begin our Marxism diets soon.

Is that how it will be?  Will we be rolling along, working, going on vacations, attending weddings and, all of a sudden, the world changes in a moment? In the twinkling of an eye?

Or, will it be gradual like death by a thousand cuts?

Maybe a little of both.

What will our last good day be like?  In the meantime, this waiting to die is killing me.

Sure, I put on a smile and laugh until the cackling mimics the sound of autumn leaves rustling in a doorway.  But, sadly, my sense of doom has become oppressive, tainting my thoughts constantly; the way smoke from a hearth permeates into your hair and clothes.

A lady tried to tell me what she heard on The View regarding Ivanka Trump’s private e-mail account, and I put my palm up in her face and said: “Talk to the hand”.  She was offended that I didn’t want to hear the perspectives of the ladies on The View.  I said they had nothing to offer me. Nothing.

These people have no idea what’s about to befall them. No idea whatsoever.

I want to be a good friend and tell them, but they won’t listen.  I want to explain, but they won’t understand.  I need them hear me, but they can’t, or won’t.

So what will I do when they ask me to save them later?

Have you ever met someone that you should have bonded with better?  I have, but it was not meant to be – due to the travesty of accidentally tainted first impressions.  Maybe it was the location, or they said something, or I said something, or any other myriad of infinite variables.  The first awkward failing might be forgivable, the next guides the door near shut, and by the third dis-harmonic contretemps, it’s all over to the sound of bolt-locks clicking on either side; a potential lifetime snuffed out like a candle by an ill wind. It wasn’t meant to be.

Conversely, the same can occur in reverse, when all of the variables sync-up in harmonic convergence with someone who normally would not have percussed the top of the personally-preferenced bell curve of potentially compatible people. For example, during the initial exchanges, the right things were said, and the correct actions taken, until they are left with a higher impression of yours truly, than might actually be the case; and vice versa.

Then one wonders how such decisions are made.  Could it be by simple comparisons?  What if all our interactions and preferences could be distilled down to personal coding, like computer binaries of 1 and 0. “I like this better than that. Or what she said more than what he said. And that more than this.” And so forth.

Moreover, if that does actually represent “Human Basic 1.0”, then, perhaps, it becomes a choice between the following binaries (and within our inherit programming designed to acquire all of our favorite things):

 

1.) To thine own self be true

 

And

 

0.) What does it profit to gain the whole world but lose your soul?

 

Certainly, honesty may be the best policy, but who decides?  In fact, maybe the “who decides” is the most important binary of all?

The Bible says King Solomon’s temple was built under Solomon because his father David had “shed blood and fought in many wars” (1 Chronicles 22:8). That was the reason God gave why His temple could not be built under David. But, at the same time, the Bible says David was a “man after God’s own heart” (1 Sam. 13:14; Acts 13:22).

How does one reconcile such things?

I’m within my rights to defend my family with lethal force; if not my material property. But what if my material property is necessary to defend my family? And what if offense becomes my best defense, will I, then, become a wolf in sheep’s attire? Will it matter? Who will care?

For the most part, I consider myself a businessman who’s found a late-in-life catharsis with writing; and just before the Stormtroopers come ‘round. I’m a nobody. A ghost in the machine.

But I’ve come to believe in the strategy of Three Ways. Like the mind, body, spirit, the three branches of government, the Holy Trinity, or three dimensions.

The concept of risk management is an important consideration:  We, and those we love, will either live, die, or become disabled.  How do we prepare?

 

When it comes to stuff: We will keep it, lose it, or release it on our own accord. This means 3 is 2, 2 is 1, and 1 is 0. In other words, a spare is good, but a spare spare is better.

In the future, if surrender isn’t an option, then we will fight, flight, or stay out of sight. How do we prepare? Portability (i.e. bugging out) could be advantageous in any of those three scenarios. Or, it could be jumping from the proverbial frying pan into the fire.

Ones and zeros, indeed. Reality, choices, consequences.

Realistically, though, we can only prepare so far, and via the measurement of probabilities, and with an inclination toward adaptability (i.e. resilience, flexibility, fluidity, portability). Above that, Mike Tyson’s maxim comes to mind:

 

“Everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face”.

 

After all, how do people prepare for a flood meant to asphyxiate the entire world?

Although “nationalism” is trending around the globe currently, it could all be part of a plan. What a perfect way to expedite the Great Reset by compartmentalizing the nations into their respective regions.  Nationalism triggered by illegal immigration followed by economic collapse (via war – trade and actual). Then, after the collapse, there will be chaos, calls for globalism, and, ultimately, a new world order; as simple as 1, 2, 3.

Certainly one could point to various neurotoxins and excreted medicines in the water but that is only a literal response to your comment. Your comparison to water is appropriate, because Marxism — maybe especially cultural Marxism — always seeks the lowest level, just like water. The problem with the human propensity to seek what is easy, what is comfortable, what inflates our sense of importance, is not one that can ever be solved or cured once and for all. It is a chronic, ongoing condition that we must always struggle against, not in the belief that you or I are capable of some final victory, but in the hope that we will keep it under control for now. I gave up on my family a while ago. The sad truth is they don’t have the background nor the context to ‘understand’. It takes ALLOT of time and energy to explain; now we just talk about harmless, mundane crap. I’m just thankful I have a wife that’s on board 100%.

I think Tsunami comes to mind. Think of the videos of the big one that hit Indonesia. Where the tide rolled way out.

I think we will see an endless beach in the form of a total rejection of entertainment. And that rejection will feed on itself. People will simply not be in the mood for that type of escapism .

I’m thinking people will go outside and enjoy themselves as an act of rebellion. Perhaps, even demand that television be turned off in their local bar. I think people will ignore all the bullshit of Holywood and Madison Avenue.

This will eat at the nerve center of a materialist society.

Hard-wired, beneath reason and logic and the cerebrum, is a reptilian remnant of the brain. It is always active (if conscious), alert, hair-triggered and instantly violent. It is the part that makes you strike back, instantly, if someone accidentally trips and bumps into you; it is the part that brings the fight-or-flight instinct to the fore if pain registers, even before Why? or It’s you! processes.
It will rule our daily lives during the Crunch (loss of faith in the currency), as supplies dwindle, people you know and love die and are killed by invaders, and everything in general becomes much HARDER.
The rest will still be there, when leisure and availability allow, but that reptilian remnant will not go away and will not really even quit, no matter how civilized you are. It’s why your ancestors survived long enough to become your ancestors, and why their progeny became your antecedents as well. It is vital to the survival of the species, and absolutely necessary to life in this modern world.
Many people will live or die depending on how reliable, reflexive and swift their reptilian remnant responds. The survivors will bury (or eat, depending) the ones who fail. Those who recognize the changes in reality fastest will ourperform those who are slow, and that may make all the difference in the composition of the population of These United States after the Crunch.

Not until it is all gone, by means fair or foul. I surf by shit on tv and web that I can’t believe any sentinent being would spend on second on unforced, and that is the vast, vast majority of it. And the people eat that shit up.

After the reckoning, or the reset, or revolution, or whatever the right term (we will only know much later) comes along, count on the propagandists and mind numbers to be siting right next to the driver. Maybe. Had to go to the mall a couple days ago and the number of “folks” with their face glued to their I-whatever, walking around totally unaware as well as uncaring for anything but their own “private” world kind of woke me up… I know we have all talked about the big “UNPLUG” where the internet goes down and down for a good long time and as I contemplated these SJWs and snowflakes or folks totally unaware of the very delicate world in which they live, even though it shouldn’t have, it shocked me at the sheer number of panic driven minions who will literally lose their minds without the ability to express their singularly self focused thoughts over the “web.” I do not believe the majority of these folks will have the ability to “turn off” anything and move on to something more constructive for a good long time and by then those who survive will be the ones who move on the quickest… just my thoughts from the sidelines..

As for speaking the truth to others, well, they have their own truth which they either will demand you
accept as what is right, or they have told me they just don’t want to hear the doom and gloom… it isn’t doom and gloom, it’s the real truth that will end up slapping them upside the head all toooooooo soon. Couldn’t agree more that the feeling, awareness of a certain major fall is beyond just tingling the senses…. pray, prep and protect ’cause hell has unleashed its demons and they are looking for souls to steal…

Hey, Uncola, myriad people care little for grammar stuff. Which is to say 10,000 people don’t care or a great number of people don’t care. So if you say, as you did, “myriad of,” you are saying 10,000 of people don’t care, or a great number of of people don’t care. If you do care, then don’t add the “of” to myriad. Hard telling how many people would be happier not to think to themselves, “Damn, I don’t like the myriad ways language usage changes to accommodate the least caring user!” But what’s a person do when they are confronted? Ouch.

A lotta dissatisfaction comes from comparison. Less of it is good for the soul.

Duly noted, Bigfoot, and I will look into it more. I do believe, however, you are treating “myriad” as an adjective whereas I was intending it as a noun. Technically, “myriad” as a noun means “vast number”. This means the phrase would be read as: “or any other myriad vast number of infinite variables”?

A majority of weddings are an engagement… the betrothal is, in the end for most, not misused. Isn’t it true that part of reason this story was written was there was a Father invited to his child’s wedding who was just a spare tire..

Just before the meal was served, the groom gave a speech, thanked all the guests for coming on such a stormy night, and also expressed gratitude for his biological father helping him, in part, to become the man he was. I nudged the father (sitting next to me) with my elbow, smiled, and gave him a thumbs up.

i took my mom out to the cancer center today,and it’s such a large place that they have the mobile driver licensing bus out there on a regular basis-
my license renews in june so i ducked in to renew it early–less then 10 minutes,$48.00,i’m good till 2027–
i noticed that some of their eqpt is from idema,and it reminded me that i read a while back that idema is heavily involved w/the driver’s license bureaus of 42 states–

While I am a relative new-poster, I am going to pretend that I am not and ramble in response to your cathartic process; please indulge my verbiage.

David may have done some bad things but, even as the nation was unraveling into idolatry, David trusted no other but the LORD.

“Built under” is a strange choice of words, the bible says David would not be the one to build the house because he had been a warrior, much like the Father. Solomon, the son of David, inherited a kingdom blessed by peace. He signifies Jesus, the prince of peace. We hear this all Christmas long in the carols proclaiming Joy to the World, etc.

See then, how David announces his heir – Solomon; Jesus also rides a donkey into the town to announce that he is the chosen king.

more proof that christ is an experience? in that book i believe the experience is manifest through the holy spirit? so who will ‘agree’ to be the next martyr? the next manifestation of the christ? and then i have to believe that all the rest – just like the kundalini- is also an experience. Thank you for opening your heart in the form of words to express your perception of the times we live in. You ask deep questions that make the reader stop and reflect on how I would answer that; it’s for this reason I always enjoy reading your articles.
There is something in our souls that rushes to answer questions when we think we know the answers, but lately I’m trying to limit my responses in such cases because I feel that even when the answer is spot on, I prefer to allow the mystery to remain.
We have a tendency to leap on predictions of the future or explanations of the past and in doing so forget how important it is to live in the present. If we could only get the one prediction for when it will all start, we think this will ease our worries, but the best advise is to not try to figure it out but to experience today, for tomorrow will worry about it’s own things; sufficient for the day is it’s own trouble.
Get a handle on today, embrace it and treasure and be thankful for all the gifts we have been given, this will make our lives satisfying and meaningful and at the same time, lessen the fears we have for the future.

Uncola, nice piece. Your last paragraph rang true for me. The “Q” quiet revolution has been a quandary for me. I wanted to believe it, needed to believe that justice would prevail but not so much anymore. Prior to the midterms 2018 I had thoughts about ‘being led down the garden path by Q”, that Q was winning the great American ripoff – elections. Was it all a hoax? The posts are dribble now and nothing more. Promises of justice have come and gone and Trump seems more unsteady now than ever. The “Plan” is just dribble now. Trump has the power but is not using it. The air is being used up by the petulant, un-focused, life shredding Dems and I find it hard to breathe now. The fires in CA seem to be the last straw for me. They must be leading us down the garden path. To what end? Power? Money? Control? Over what? We will all be dead. I just don’t get it.

I realize there are readers here who have difficulty with all of the Bible referencing; and I appreciate the latitude they afford me and respect they hold for my right to free expression. (insert winking emoji here)

In my previous Destiny Looms piece, I addressed why I like to use Biblical referencing at times; as well as my defense against those on either side the theological dividing line who might wish to burn me at the stake:

My reasons for doing this are, first, for purposes of illustration; and secondly, because the Bible stories and characters represent a universal reference point from which to begin a conversation I believe is important at this time.

To the non-believers, I say it’s no different than citing any other historical record, legend, myth, or fairy tale.

To the believers, I’d ask you to look beyond what is written here and fill in the blanks according to your faith; and remember that even the self-proclaimed Son of God used a little creative license now and then to make the occasional point. I say that with all due respect.

Therefore, with all that in mind, I will say this with all due respect as well:

After Noah’s Ark landed on dry land, the first rainbow appeared as a sign from God that He will never again drown the world by water:

Prof Pangloss said all stories have a common theme – man.
Good stories reference back to the reader’s familiar ground; fairy tales, bible stories and Shakespeare. What is Pretty Woman except a retelling of Cinderella? The Matrix is an update on Rip Van Winkle. Sure, science fiction is novel but if the reader cannot find the familiar tale in it, the story is harder to appreciate.

Hi uncola,
Beautifully written. I have been thinking a lot about this as of late. I actually just had a conversation with my husband the other day. I have walked away from so many conversations that did not go the way I had hoped. My soul cried out Lord I have failed you! How many more chances will I get…tomorrow is set in stone for no-one. Is their blood on my hands because I am tired and weak and I think Lord what is my place here! As a woman who has been raised in the south it seems harder to find that line of when to speak and when to not.. trying to be Lady like and respectable and all at the same time tell the truth in such a pc world we find ourselves in. I always say if you want the truth you will seek and find it. Sadly it seems most don’t want it and think your absolutely mad for speaking it! I have tried to talk to my own family for years and they make a joke of it though at the same time I think they have considered some things that maybe they wouldn’t have, if only that were enough. Thankfully my husband listens and respects me enough to do most of the things I tell him we need to do. Though its hard because he himself doesn’t really understand and he leads my two sons in a more worldly way than I want. I’m pretty sure they have been confused at times between the two of us. I keep thinking though that sooner than later he will see! For every knee shall bow and every tongue confess that Jesus is Lord of Lords King of Kings!! Hopefully he will see before that point. I have found such hope and refreshment in Our brother Henry Gruver. I have drawn so much peice from his faith! While my own is still growing. Its definitely a trying time and we should be keeping all of our brothers and sisters in Christ Jesus in prayer and continually lift them up. If we don’t have Love we are just a loud noise aren’t we.If the people fall silent then the rocks will cry out! If I am seen as crazy then let it be for the Lord! Not for this world!! The time is short and Our reward is great so we all have to draw our strength from the One whose strength flows like a Great river that will never run dry, Our Lord will Lead us if we will ask Him and follow!

In the Spanish movie Mondays in the Sun, Bardem’s character is offended by the story of the ant and the grasshopper. He can’t understand the capitalist propaganda that the grasshopper does not deserve help from the ant. He and his co-workers just lost their jobs because of this kind of thinking. Together, as long as we stay together, we can win. We were divided and we lost, he laments. (This is always the tactic of the rich, to divide the masses.)
I read a story by an oriental author that tackled this issue – the writer said the ants worked all year while the grasshopper played. Then in the winter, the grasshopper entertained all the ants with stories of his adventures. So you see, Stuck, your calling as a storyteller has its purpose and worth.

What about the Koala. It lives in Australia. It’s about 8,000 miles to the Middle East, plus the first leg on the journey is over an ocean. The Koalas eats basically ONLY eucalyptus!! I can’t say the bible is simply writ in a sine wave; if you can picture a large X, flattened a bit from top and bottom, that is the OT on the left side and the NT on the right. I give the image of an X because if we start with the flood on one end and end up with the fire on the other side, you can see the books mirror each other after a fashion and in reverse order.

Notice we start out in the garden of Eden. At the end of the NT we see the opposite of the garden – a hellish picture. The OT is a description of a chosen people who gradually lost their way. In the NT, we see folks who were never chosen but gradually find the way. In the early days, God seeks the Israelites through Moses; later, the Greeks (goys) seek Jesus.

The panhandle of Texas hasn’t any lobster. What is imagination but an exercise – a rehearsal before embarking on the real thing, I’m sure. You got me to dreaming of the lobster broil. I thank you for that daydream.

If me and my wife are going to take a mental trip anywhere, it’s going to be over there. She’s Salvy, more at home by the sea than anywhere. She tells me her sister goes back to Salvador and spends her time eating lobster that young boys dive for.

I’m not sure if it was Nickle who said his hobby was diving for clams over here. The point is that coastal people sure love their seafood. When I told my wife about your invitation to the lobster bbq, I think she was about to start packing.

As for the parody, I hunted around in my memory for any old song and after two days the song popped up and it took me another 3 days to work it out on the computer and in my head.

I had a plan about the SHTF and then I got punched in the face. I have lung cancer and either way, in a short period of time – I will be dead. There is no getting around that so I am clearing out the junk for the relatives who will have to take care of things after I’m gone. I am trying to leave them things that will help them in all of the trials to come. At first, I couldn’t guess which scenario it might turn out to be but as it all gets closer it seems that it will be a combination of them and it will be horrible.

I have a feeling there won’t be any medical available for someone in my spot before too much longer so I have to prepare a bit for that. Either way, it is interesting to watch all of this that’s going on from a perspective that it is a certain death coming and it all doesn’t matter what I do any more in trying to protect myself or my home. Now, all that is left is spiritual and getting close to God, loving who ever is near me and sharing what I have in time, food and material goods. It all seems like such a waste watching most people going after the new cars, fancy material goods and big homes and marrying each other while their souls are oblivious.

I was just reading an article about Dostoevsky. He considered both the insignificance of dying and being forgotten or the impact of dying and ending the world and all existence by that very act.

We see this acted out in the final scene of Vanilla Sky where the protagonist’s dream world depends on him to keep the dream and everyone in it, alive.

RJ – I have a very close friend who is now weeks away from shuffling off this mortal coil, from liver cancer. As he said – and it is very true – we who are not in your situation really don’t know exactly what you’re going through. We can only be there through the ordeal as best we can. His attitude is very similar to yours. He knows its over. It’s a done deal, sans a sovereign healing from God. His attitude is that he keeps going because that’s just who and what he is. He is disgusted with those that turn their toes up and escape into drug-induced incoherence, or stare blankly at the idiot box, long before they literally turn their toes up. He will, he says, finally go that route if the pain gets too much. Until then he putters in his shop and we reminisce of times past and comment on the affairs of a world that is increasingly non-relevant to him, and about where we both believe he is going. He’s pretty sure that he’s getting out a bad time coming soon. He has taken to making ‘garage art’ out of salvaged pieces of wood and metal, each beautiful, functional and with a unique twist that only he could create. He makes them specifically for friends and family to have after he is outta here.
My condolences for having to deal with this, RJ. See you on the other side.

a good strategy. The comment on ramp gets congested when the sun is shining, and many want to rush in.
Waiting until the traffic, and jockeying for position has calmed down a bit lets one relax, enjoy the scenery, and notice whether the leaders have left the roadmap, or stayed on route / topic.
At times, many detour off track, which ain’t all bad.

I just had one today. I always hold my breath just a little until that test comes back.
I’m glad you are close to God. He is really all we have when it gets down to brass tacks.

On a slightly different note, we should understand that grasshoppers have a natural history that has the male mating with the female who then digs her ovipositor into the ground and lays her eggs in a pod. In the spring the nymphs hatch out and the cycle begins again. That old grasshopper and ant tale is hogwash. Grasshoppers don’t live as adults through the winter, they die off no matter what the ants do to keep them alive for their amusement as fiddlers and tellers of tales. We all have a natural history and as much as it can be modified, there is an ending that so far has not been thwarted. Whether we come back again for more enlightenment is debatable, but we might want to live like that is true, karma being what it is. Not that living rightly is not its own reward.

I do not know the exact circumstances, or the relationships atplay, but when I read that Uncola had told a grown man to “sit down and shut up” my mouth fell open.

You see, the next time a man tells me to sit down and shut up, and I do not beat him unconscious, or at least have him cowering and backpedalling, will be the first time. In no universe could I imagine allowing a man to speak to me in such a way. I am a free man, and I say and do as I please within the bounds of my own code of honor and sense of decency and morality. Telling me to shut up is, and always have been, fighting words.

I am funny that way. I am a very polite person as a rule, but when screwed with I am feral and potentially dangerous. Most people recognize that about me instantly, and generally leave me alone.

As mentioned, I am surprised that Uncola would say such a thing, but as I said I do not know the circumstances. I do know that had it been said to me, unless in jest by someone I knew well, the venue would have had some very interesting video to share. I am also not of the disposition to take things outside. That is a mug’s game. First blow wins, and taking it outside negates that advantage. So either there is more to the tale than has been told, re the relationship, or the circumstances, or Uncola has some seriously huge brass ones and was prepared to fight and have the venue destroyed, or he has never run across a man willing and able to respond to such an (apparent) affront.

It would be interesting to know more about the particulars. But as a general truism, I caution people from saying such things. It can end poorly.

If you guys met me. Then you’d know. There were reasons he was put by me. One of which was that I stood by him, his wife, and kids before, during, and after their allegorical flood. Also, I never close a deal without a rapport established first and I can make people laugh. Humor and laughter go a long way toward closing deals and defusing situations.

Speaking to Llpoh’s comment, I am a very polite person when not drinking. I never engage in any type of jocularity with anybody I first meet.

I will also say this: I’ve never lost a street fight. Not once. I’ve lost wrestling and martial arts matches but never a barfight, street fight, house fight, yard-fight, etc. My oldest brother was a jungle fighter who beat the shit out of me constantly until it didn’t hurt anymore; and just before I came to realize the impossibility of any opponent defending all of their weak spots at once. Plus creativity. One time at a drive-in theater, I unscrewed the antenna off my buddy’s car before things got sporty. When they came at us, I whipped them all like Zorro. No shit.

But I’m not like that anymore. Not totally.

I’d tell you about more experiences, but you’d think I was making it up or bragging.

As an aside, I have had my ass kicked more than once. Winning or losing a fight is not the issue for me (far better to win, of course, and fighting is not for fun, at least never has been for me). I am far less able today than 30 years ago. There is always someone tougher, better, bigger, faster, luckier, younger, etc., and they are often ones you least expect. The issue is I learned that backward steps lead to hell.

Thus the issue is to be willing. There are instances where discretion would be best – one against a gang of bikers, as an example. But given I have long ago heeded my old man’s advice about those things, and avoid places where trouble is a general given, I have not encountered gangs. But I have encountered many who would try to force a backward step. Mostly they are not those that can back up their attempts, but who are bullies that have never been challenged.

Your use of the antenna was inventive, and brought a smile from me. My brother was a savant with that stuff. I saw him use a glass salt shaker to devastating effect one time. It would not have crossed my mind that a small glass salt shaker could do such damage. He tapped the big guy in the noggin like a woodpecker on a tree, and put knots all over his head with the thing. Saved him an enormous ass whuppin, which he had coming, by the way, which was why I was not getting involved. If I had let him involve me in those things, I surely would have ended in prison. He was known to use half full beer cans, Bic pens, etc., when he was getting pulped. The tide invariably turned.

To that, I will add this: I, too, have aged and I know my weaknesses better than anyone, and I always chose my battles carefully. Now I prefer to only punch my keyboard (or phone) with my fingers.

I will also say that some of my family and friends read this blog, so they’ve heard the stories and not just from me.

So, with that in mind, I’ll clarify that the fights I won were with everyone EXCEPT my older brother. He has beaten me in the house, garage, basement, and yard. And I’m talking some real Mr. Miyagi shit. He actually trained with an Asian master abroad.

But, even when I was a wee lad, he would wake me up with either a charlie-horse, snake-bite, or frog (like a charley but with more bruising).

One summer, home from college, I stayed with him out of state and we were sparring in his living room. He swept my legs and the next thing I knew – I was horizontal, staring at the ceiling, just before I landed on the corner of a solid walnut coffee table. It knocked the wind of out me and I still have the scar on my back.

Then a few days later on the Fourth of July while watching fireworks, I had my shirt off, the bandage removed, and my sister-in-law put some ointment on the wound. Before I knew it, my bro threw a firecracker at me, it stuck to the gash and exploded. Hurt like hell. I was worried about infection and he fell down from laughing so hard.

A few weeks later in another match, I caught him looking elsewhere before I crushed his foot with my heel. He was on crutches for six weeks and in a cast for 6 months.

Today, though, he has health issues and when walking together, he’ll sometimes hold onto my arm for support. I’m honored when he does, cuz he’s my bro. The tide does turn.

Uncola – great story! So what you are saying is that you and your brother fought fair ?. Not always the case in my house.

I remember when my next in line brother, the asshole mentioned above, was tormenting my youngest brother, who was about four, when the older one was around ten. The torment went on a while, then the ten year old grew bored of it. He lay down on the floor watching tv, face toward the tv. The four year old had been watching and waiting and watching and waiting.

When the ten year old lay down, the four year old crept over and picked up one of those old time heavy metal lunch boxes the men used to carry. He crept back behind the older one, raised it as far above his head as he could, and brought it crashing down on top of the ten year olds head. Blood flowed in large quantity, and the ten year old was almost unconscious.

My father and I had watched the entire thing unfold, and said not a peep of warning. We figured he had whatever was about to happen coming to him. We did not know it was going to be quite that violoent however – he was only four after all. My dad simply told the older one, once he was lucid again, that maybe he should quit tormenting the younger one.

He learned for a while, bu eventually started again. The next time, a few years later, the younger one came back with a rifle and had it levelled at his head. We all could shoot just fine before we were ten, and he was no exception. I stopped him just in time, that time. The older one turned white as a sheet, as he truly was a hair’s breadth from death, and he never tormented the younger again.

The younger is to this day, of all the people I know, the person I would most advise people not to screw with. He does not forgive and forget, and he does not understand proportional response. He is also hell on wheels – a trained muay thai fighter. He is not much bigger than a midget, that one, but anyone who fucks with him does so at great peril. I steer a wide path away from him.

Anon – I suppose perhaps they make for interesting stories, but in hindsight, at least my experiences, they were not fun, nor normal. I have spent the majority of my life putting these things behind me, and doing all possible to make sure my children never experience the things I did.

Unfortunately, or perhaps not, those experiences have bedded into my soul. I have made things different for my family, but personally I still respond to things as I always have. If I am prodded, I respond with aggression. I know no other way for myself, but I think I have managed to show my kids a different path.

Only once have they witnessed me in rage, after two men abused my wife while I was parking the car and out of sight. The two men quickly fled from me. I think at that moment my children became aware that who I am to them is not who I have always been. I hope the path they tread is more gentle than that I have known. I have done my best to ensure it.

Sir, I didn’t mean to convey enjoyment of the violence. The key for me is always interest in other people’s experiences, because a lesson is typically conveyed.
I relish the stories where the bullies and mean ones eventually get confronted by the bold ones who stand up and put up with it no more.
Particularly if the scrapper is smaller than the aggressor.

Being smaller physically, I was bullied and intimidated. By both, words and actions.
There’s a longer story about that, for another time, which could explain the reasons of why my youth experiences led to an adult disposition I currently carry.
In younger years, reluctance to fight was seen as lacking courage.
That’s a part of it, but after the few fights I’ve been in, the feelings afterward were not good. So, I don’t look to engage in them.
I walk. Unless cornered, of course, but that’s rare.
Even if it happens currently. I have walked away more often than not, and have almost always been wiser for that reaction.
Regrets, and some later thoughts of a more courageous response, but…

Violence and revenge can stop intimidation in it’s tracks, but it can also escalate the cycle of anger & hate to higher frequencies, a place I’d rather avoid at this stage of life. Your input is appreciated.

I attended jury duty yesterday in State District court and at the end, the judge said “I am a patriot, all of you that showed up today are patriots and are what is needed to save our Republic. Out of 300 summons issued, only 72 showed up, whittled down to about 55 from which 14 were chosen. There are only 3 boxes available to save our Republic, the voting box – the jury box- and the ammo box. If we lose the first two, only the third is left, so I want to thank you for showing up else the state determines our fate. So may God bless you, you are free to go.”
