“You’re A F*cking Idiot!”: Shocking Tesla Expose Reveals The Horror Of Working For A “Depressed” And “Angry” Elon Musk

Via ZeroHedge

Wired has published a stunning longform expose on what it has been like to work for Tesla over the last few years. The piece dives into life at the company’s Nevada Gigafactory and the seemingly abusive management style of CEO Elon Musk.

The piece opens with a story about an engineer at the company’s Nevada plant who “had been living out of a suitcase, putting in 13-hour days, seven days a week,” and who one day was excited to hear that Elon Musk himself needed his help on the production line. When the engineer was asked about one of the mechanized modules on the company‘s production line, instead of Elon seeking his assistance, he was berated and fired within a minute.

“Hey, buddy, this doesn’t work!” Musk shouted at the engineer, according to someone who heard the conversation. “Did you do this?”

“You mean, program the robot?” the engineer said. “Or design that tool?”

“Did you fucking do this?” Musk asked him.

“I’m not sure what you’re referring to?” the engineer replied apologetically.

“You’re a fucking idiot!” Musk shouted back. “Get the fuck out and don’t come back!”

Instead of his performance review, which the engineer was expecting in the next week, he wound up signing separation papers. This type of volatility and abuse from Musk was rampant throughout the article.

The article also tells the story about Musk flying in several weeks later, marching through the factory and telling employees that “Tesla excellence wasn’t a passing grade, and that they were failing”. Musk also reportedly told people “they weren’t smart enough to be working on these problems”.

This feeling of superiority seemed to be a constant. One senior executive told Wired: “We called it ‘the idiot bit’. If you said something wrong or made one mistake or rubbed him the wrong way, he would decide you’re an idiot and there was nothing that could change his mind.”

https://www.zerohedge.com/sites/default/files/inline-images/musk_8_0.jpg?itok=W7gpEwXZ

These temper tantrums and ego rampages were well-known throughout the company. Sometimes Musk would instantly fire people, other times simply intimidate them. It had gotten so bad that people were afraid to walk too close to Musk’s desk at the Gigafactory for fear of coming in contact with him. Musk wound deride people in meetings, insult workers’ competence and bully those below him, sometimes demoting them on the spot.

Then, during a meeting with one of his right hand men about fixing the production issues at the Gigafactory, Musk – known to be sensitive to odors – caught the smell of nearby liquid silicone vats. Musk reportedly said, “These vapors [are] going to kill people. They’re going to kill me.”

As a reminder, in a recent 60 Minutes interview, Musk was asked about potential toxic fumes in his factories, a notion he laughed off and joked about:

Lesley Stahl: Well, there are several investigations by the press and by regulators in California about injuries on the job. Breathing toxic fumes, stress injuries, over 100 ambulance calls.

Elon Musk: I don’t think that’s correct.

Elon Musk: I was literally living in the factory. If these– if there’s, like, toxic fumes, I’m breathing them. Okay?

During the trip, Musk was tasked with motivating workers at the plant. After thanking them, he informed them that it wasn’t a 9-to-5 company and that more work was on its way. He told the employees that the Model 3 was a “bet the company decision” and that everybody needed to work harder and smarter.

Wired spoke to dozens of current and former Tesla employees from nearly every division of the company. While some called the company a thrilling place to work, one executive stated “everyone in Tesla is in an abusive relationship with Elon”. Musk was described in the piece as socially awkward and defensive when corrected.

https://www.zerohedge.com/sites/default/files/inline-images/musk%201_2_0.jpg?itok=kVm_LvsL

“People used to tell me to hunch down lower in my seat during meetings. Elon reacted better to people when he was sitting higher than them,” a former high ranking Tesla executive stated.

Many employees and executives also said that they monitored Musk’s Twitter account often, and that complaints on Twitter would cause people to “drop everything” to address the situation.

A former SolarCity employee stated: “We called it management by Twitter. Some customer would tweet some random complaint, and then we would be ordered to drop everything and spend a week on some problem affecting one loudmouth in Pasadena, rather than all the work we’re supposed to do to support the thousands of customers who didn’t tweet that day.”

The piece also highlighted what appeared to be a precise and conservative method to beginning production of the Model 3 that de facto COO Doug Field had put into place. Instead of following his idea of beginning production in October 2017, Musk upended these plans in Summer of 2016, claiming he wanted to move the start date up four months because of a dream he had, where “he had seen the factory of the future, a fully automated manufacturing plant where robots built everything at high speed and parts moved along conveyor belts that delivered each piece, just in time, to exactly the right place.”

A former high ranking executive told Wired that Musk would walk around on days when the company was trying to build his vision of the alien dreadnaught – sometimes burning $100 million per week – and would say to him “I’ve got to fire someone today. I just do. I’ve got to fire somebody”.

“Everyone came to work each day wondering if that was going to be their last day,” another former executive at the company stated.

As production and manufacturing hell continued, Musk went from mad genius to simply mad, according to the report. He would occasionally interrupt meetings and insist that coworkers watch clips of Monty Python movies on his laptop. He’d play these clips more than once, laughing each time. When he split up with Amber Heard, Musk would reportedly miss meetings or cancel at the last minute.

Other times, Musk simply seemed angry. “There was this constant feeling of dread,” one employee said.

https://www.zerohedge.com/sites/default/files/inline-images/musk%202_2_0.jpg?itok=Wj_8VC-H

Almost all of the employees (even the ones with positive things to say) spoke to Wired on the condition of anonymity because of fears of being sued by the company.

The company, when presented with what was going to be reported by Wired, seemed to corroborate many of the stories, opting to try and defend Musk’s actions rather than dispute the content:

Tesla, which was given extensive summaries of the reporting in this article, including what took place during Musk’s Gigafactory visits and the engineer’s dismissal, said through a spokesperson that some aspects were “overly dramatized,” “abbreviated,” and “ultimately misleading anecdotes that completely lack essential context.”

The company added that “Elon cares very deeply about the people who work at his companies. That is why, although it is painful, he sometimes takes the difficult step of firing people who are underperforming and putting the success of the entire company” at risk. Tesla also noted that Musk was worried about the comfort and safety of workers when he complained about the vapors in the Gigafactory.

And maybe next time Musk looks to place the blame at his company for whatever the problem du jour is, he should go back and reference what his former and present coworkers said to Wired:

Among the biggest obstacles, they believed, was Musk himself.

In my experience, Visionaries are people that yell at me because I can’t instantly warp reality to mesh with whatever fantasy they are currently harboring.

They’re sort of like unhinged motivational speakers that sometimes give you a paycheck.

Musk is of the “tribe”. You see, Musk is one of the few true “humans”…most of his employees are “goy”…subhumans with souls, only there to service those of the “tribe”…

I don’t know… “Elon” sounds like one of those Old Testament prophets. See: First Elon, chapter 13, verse 4. Also in Leviticus: “if a man lies down with a sheep, he shall be like unto an elon to you and the LORD will smite his ass”.

Verdict: Sounds a little jew-y.

One can call a jew a “shyster”, “shylock”, “criminal”, “ne-er-do-well”, “money-grubber”, “bankster”, or other derogatory name and it will roll off his back like water off a duck, BUT call a jew a “jew” and he will recoil in horror, having been “found out”…FACT.

Used to go on site to one of the big 3 auto companies new factory and launch of production projects.
One of the project managers was like this report about Muskrat.
A real hard ass, berating people in meetings.
He was bitching at one, seated at one of those long, narrow tables where 1-2 dozen people gather in.
When he called one blue collar skilled trades guy a son of a bitch, the targeted good old boy stood up, reached across the table, grabbed hardass by his necktie, and picked him up out of his chair, got in his face and said:
“If you want to argue about business, well ok. But if you wanna get personal, we can step outside.”

That kind of management style doesn’t elicit a favorable response 100% of the time, anymore.
Ego and ruthless prick mentality.
Best checked at the door, going into a production meeting.

Nuther one I remember was a couple of white superior auto company managers were intimidating a black guy.
Two sides to the story, I’m sure. But, he’d had enough. He went to the parking lot, retrieved a pistol, came back in and took out both of them. When asked why, his response was: “They were fucking with me.”
He’s probably still in prison, but 3 families lives were shattered, from some level of harsh discipline or other personal treatment gone awry.

Difficult situation, motivating the workforce, for managers with slacker worker bees.

Let’s compare that to the hedge fund guys. Take your pick, Mark Spiegel (Enron 2.0!!!) Jim Chanos (It’s going to zero!!!), or David Einhorn (doubling down on stupid). Or how about David Stockman, and I quote from the same week as my quote, “Tesla isn’t a car manufacturer, it is a con. It is the greatest short of this cycle. If somebody has a strong stomach, go out and short the damn thing because it will go to zero. It’s just living off of raising new money. Anybody can do that as long as you keep the con going. It will end up being the posterboy for this greatest bubble yet of this century.” 4th quarter results coming in January. They should be a lot stronger than 3rd quarter, which was stellar. How much money do these guys want to lose?

Yes, and if you happen to one of those that won that 50%, cash out and get the fuck out of the casino. The ONLY reason it is up is that a bunch of dumbasses think that a real car company is going to come along and buy it.
News flash, car companies are starting to bleed red ink all over, do you think they have the money to buy Tesla, for what the market thinks they will? Oh, that’s right, you think they can just borrow the money. Oops, did not get the memo that the Fed’s free money spicket is off. Had a look at the High Yield debt market lately? Or the IPO market? How about venture capital? Hmmm.
Tesla is either a zero, or will be parted out to other real companies at a steep discount. Neither will be good for the Tesla stockholder. Elon, will probably walk away with a few million and dodge a few lawsuits.

Doesn’t matter to me if Musk yells and curses at his employees. At least he isn’t laying them off like that useless Mary Barra at GM. Further he, somehow, keeps on making cars in the Bay Area. I’m no fan and have doubts about the viability of Tesla but I’ll give credit where credit it due.

It’s a made up company and Elon Musk is semi-fictional character put in place to help divert/money launder/steal cash from taxpayers through a variety of government programs designed to look like something they aren’t. None of his SpaceX sideshows are real and anyone who thinks otherwise is hopelessly stupid.

But back to the first part.

If he is an engineer, he must be smart enough to know what part he worked on, right? I mean he doesn’t actually need help in understanding what he was responsible for, does he? Did he program the robot or design the tool? If he doesn’t know, then he should be fired. If he does know then he’s being deliberately obtuse. ‘This’ refers to whatever it was that Musk was looking at that wasn’t working. If it wasn’t working because of the program and he engineered the program, then that was what Musk was asking him. If it wasn’t working because he designed the tool that wouldn’t work then that was what he was asking about. How hard could that answer be? If I was building a house and the owner was looking at the roof saying that it was wrong and asked if I did it, I’d know he was talking about the framing or the shingles, not the design. Either way I’d be crystal clear about what constituted my work versus someone else’s but this gamma doesn’t seem to have the ability to simply answer the question.

So what is this article about anyway? Are we supposed to not like Musk anymore because he’s lacking in social graces? It was the media that built him into this fictional super genius but now their worried about retards feelings?

I can’t keep up.

“lacking in social graces” — first off – can’t this man-baby-pothead-express himself in a way that an engineer working out on a noisy production line can understand what he is asking? “do this” the word “this” could have been clarified.

Secondly, why fire a guy -in 30 seconds flat without at least letting the guy and all ten people around him listening why the engineer must be terminated right then/there? Now you demotivated 10-100 of your line workers. the 10 who were in the area and the other 90 they told all about it. And, your line output sucks already Muskrat ——- according to many sources. Way to go to make it worse.

Tesla is losing Trainloads of money -who says “they’re making a lot of money”? Haven’t seen those numbers on any stock report or analyst blog.

Anon – the best thing about being boss, is that you are the boss. If I decide to fire someone, I fire them. Cimes with the job. You armchair quarterbacks can sit back and second guess this shit all you want, but until you have sat in the chair, you have no idea.

What Musk is attempting is far beyond difficult, and quite honestly it is far beyond his skill set, in my opinion. The stress he would be carrying is likely enormous. And he does not have time to suffer fools. Nor mistakes. If these employees do not like it, they can take a hike.

It is not how I would do it, but I have acted pretty rashly at times under tremendous stress. But again, he is the boss, it is his business by and large, he has the responsibility, and if the employees do not want to work for him, they can hit the road. No one owes them a job.

I believe in treating employees with common decency. Musk does not, it seems. He is a dick. So do not work for him. It is that easy.

Some folks do not believe in mistakes. I do not believe in mistakes. The bullshit about everyone makes mistakes is just that – bullshit. I address every mistake, and generally not gently. I do not pay people to make mistakes. Mistakes happen because people fuck up. So I make sure they know that is not acceptable.

I can remember almost every single time I have made a mistake in business. And each ine still pisses me off. Each mistake could have been avoided with clearer thinking, or better preparation. Sometimes you take risks, knowing that the outcome is uncertain. That is not necessarily a mistake.

People that make big mistakes, or frequent small ones, can take their bullshit to my competitors.
