I’m not sure. I just find it a worthwhile question and I appreciate your in depth analysis when you go after a topic. That and I’m just defending my position which is…greed is much more destructive on the world than envy. You made a very good point though about envy…it will kill your chances of happiness.

“Which is worse, envy or greed?”
Developing a hierarchy of sins can be difficult, sometimes futile. But, not in this case. Envy has far more serious consequences than greed.
Greed is condemned quite often in the Bible. But …. it doesn’t make the Ten Commandments, while coveting (envy) does. So from God’s perspective — “These are the ten worst things you can do!” — the nod goes to envy being worse.
Greed is NOT always destructive. It all depends on what you do with it. For example, you might want a bigger house ….so, you work your ass off and save for it. Not destructive at all.
Envy, when acted upon is always bad. Actually, it doesn’t even have to be acted upon for bad shit to happen. The very essence of envy is to produce resentment, strife, and anger ….. hence, the Bible’s proclamation that even just thinking about (coveting) your neighbors belongings is destructive.
A couple other things more likely to occur with envy. It can lead to playing the victim — blaming others for your own lack. Lastly, more than greed, envy will pretty much ruin your chance for a happy life … because envy will never ever allow you to be grateful which absolutely is a key to happiness (in any religion).
Wipper, these are two different topics. Greed leads to accumulation, what Doc Pangloss called ‘gathering coconuts’. While greed can impel a person to steal another person’s property, most of the time it is restrained by ethics and law. Envy can lead to outright destructive behavior because of the feeling that another person does not deserve what he has.
I would confuse destroying another country’s infrastructure with envy. That is simply a military decision to weaken a potential threat. The best way for America to stay on top is to weaken other states so that we never have to go to war, mano a mano, with them. We just bomb them back to the stone age and keep them there.
I’m having difficulty with thinking envy is more destructive than greed.
