1st Annual Burning Platform Independence Day Celebration

Guest Post by Hardscrabble Farmer

For several years now our family have been hosting an annual pig roast that has fed as many as 150 guests from the bounty of our farm. It has given us an opportunity to not only share our spectacular views and location on beautiful Mount Sunapee, but for members of our community to gather together and enjoy each other’s company for a day. In the past we have kept the event local, but this year we’d like to welcome another community, one that every reader here has been an integral part of.

Our feast will be held on Saturday, July 6th and it promises to be our best yet. After consulting with Jim Quinn of The Burning Platform we have agreed to make this year’s event a celebration of Liberty, and the gift of Independence, and have decided to open our invitation to the readers of his blog. This will offer an opportunity to meet with some of their favorite writers and commentators, enjoy a genuine New England pig roast with a full farm to table banquet under the open sky.

In addition to last year’s menu we will be grilling both beef and lamb- all raised on our own pasture- as well as the full menu by one of the leading chef’s in the state. There will be local music, a bonfire and a fireworks display to celebrate one of the most important events in American history- Independence Day. There will also be a silent auction to benefit The Burning Platform, featuring some fairly spectacular locally produced crafts and antiques. It promises to be the most enjoyable events we have ever had the pleasure to host.

We are located in the southern tier of the State less than a mile from Lake Sunapee, one of the most pristine glacial lakes in New England and anyone if anyone is interested in either camping, staying overnight, or making a summer vacation out of it, we have a multitude of options available, from B&B’s, resort hotel accommodations, and lake house rentals all within minutes of the farm.

Tickets are limited and first come first serve but we hope to be able to get everyone who is interested a spot at the table. This is a family friendly, day long event and there will be plenty of activities to keep everyone busy.

Think of it as a Fyre Festival, only with interesting people, great food, better, music and an actual event – for a fraction of the cost!

The ticket price is $125 per person and children are free. This is a rain or shine event and we prepare for it. There is a limited number of seats available and it is first come, first serve so please make plans early! Can you imagine a better location or a better way to enjoy the 4th of July weekend than meeting with interesting people and eating a five star meal outdoors? We couldn’t either.

If anyone has any questions or would like to reserve a spot at the table, please call me at 603-748-6917 or email me at [email protected]

We look forward to hearing from you, to a very special event, and a celebration of the Freedom we all want for our loved ones.

What a wonderful thing to do! It is the sort of thing you continue to gift TBP readers with and I am thrilled to even be on the sidelines for this final attempt to let powerful forces know Whoville is no longer afraid of the elephant in the room.

About the auction…I have an oil painting on canvas my artistic aunt titled Fire on Kentucky Lake. I tried to sell it to Admin a long time ago.

Is No One changing names but this one may or may not stick. It depends.

Thanks so much for proving once again that ideas really do empower people. My trips eastward are probably limited, but there is always the mail.

Nothing I’d like to do more than attend this event. I simply can not plan for it. Ms Freud will still be in that clinical trial and, I don’t know from one day to the next if my mother will be ill, or even dead.

So don’t wait for me. If it looks clear, I’ll find you and, after about thirty-seconds of our conversation, you’ll know who’s greeting you. Then, if you don’t mind, please just act naturally and direct me to a covered area inaccessible by drones and, preferably, with some higher-volume ambient noise.

On another note – I watched the cow vid above and found it mesmerizing. The cinematography and music stirred the soul.

Sometimes we all get caught up in the Spin Cycle of Darkness and it’s easy to lose perspective. But I’m reminded now of one of the best quotes I ever read. It was one Hardscrabble posted here in a comment of some now long-forgotten thread. He said it was paraphrased from somewhere and I don’t remember from where (some book) – but here it is:

History appears to be a raging, bloody river, choked by the bodies of innocents and tyrants alike, but most of it is lived high upon its banks, where people tend gardens, raise their children and whisper to one another in the darkness.

Every day, there are people out there doing cool stuff, having fun, and it’s important to see those things and remember it’s not all doom and gloom.

I came across this recently and got a kick out of it. It’s a 3-minute video by a superintendent and principal of a school in a (5,000 population) suburb of Flint, MI. These guys have some talent and can replace song lyrics almost as well as El Coyote. It’s probably the band instructor off camera playing the piano

Remarkable video. I’m flattered that you think I can create something as nice as this. I’m confused at the moment, Unc. I thought, ok, so he doesn’t look like the dweeb that used to write under the jFish moniker but, my goodness, the vicious attack on Fleabo – a buddy of mine – I’m not sure if I want to post anything that might offend you and bring out the Mr. Hyde in you. No wonder your man-cave is 4 miles from home. Be safe, Unc, you owe I don’t know how much to the TBP kitty, Mr. Potty mouth.

HS, many people are going to need more motivation to visit western NH in July than some tasty meat and the prospect of coming face to face with your ugly mug.

Perhaps I can assist.

The best and second largest airport in New England is MHT in Manchester-Londonderry, NH. I should know. I’ve flown Southwest to Tampa round-trip, non-stop for peanuts (literally and figuratively) many times. Fuck off Logan Airport in dirty Boston!

So, having covered air travel, we move on to accommodations. Good luck finding an affordable place in the usual vacation spots- for some folks it may be better to stay cheap in or around dirty Manchester, aka Manchvegas.

Now, what additional reasons and perks might come with a visit to the LIVE FREE OR DIE state?

Well, the first thing you’ll want to do if you’re a gun nut is potentially visit places like the Lethal Force Institute, SIG/training academy, Sturm/Ruger, etc if they have any events or tours available. Getting in on some dirt cheap, tax-free ammo and guns is another good reason to visit NH. You can go home with 11lbs of ammo (per passenger) on a domestic commercial flight, no problem. There are also plenty of shooting ranges, one of which is 600 acres and allows for unlimited guests. Questions? Ask me.

For the less-firearms-inclined, there are plenty of other attractions like Mount Washington, The Flume gorge, Polar caves, dirt cheap deep-sea fishing on the coast, etc, etc. I don’t consider visiting filthy Boston, MA a perk, I consider it a curse. If you want to visit the marker for the FIRST, REPEAT FIRST overt act of resistance to British rule- the marker for the PINE TREE RIOT is a millstone located in Weare, NH between the airport and HS’s place. Apparently HS has some of the “Kings Pines” still living on his farm that still bear the marks of THE CROWN!

I propose a pre and/or post event bar crawl or three, in Manchester or possibly Keene, for those who 1. are interested and/or 2. don’t plan on staying overnight in greater Newport, NH for the feast and/or 3. would be making a day trip out of their visit to HS’s place to begin with.

Thoughts?

Nice information about NH. I had a layover at Pease AFB one time, but I don’t even think that is there now.

I have one thought,a visit on the Kang highway even during a peak tourist season time is basically a nice drive and even better you stop along the way and hike a few areas/hell,just lie back on the rocks in the swift river and listen to the water travel by.I will say though tax free and all still order ammo online in the Hampster, still cheapest for me(SG Ammo me favorite).

I will say unsure of 4th plans but if I attend and folks find a spot would be willing to bring a few firearms for those who do not travel with them for whatever reason for some local shooting.

As for the Pine Tree Riot, nice and all but the Bostonians shed actual blood and death(yep, raised outside of Boston and though hate mass. govt. love the city though also hate Logan Airport),tis my hope in the turning we can restore the city once again to a place to be proud of.

HSF – sounds like a good time! Wish I could make it. But I will be in Europe then, and so have to offer my regrets. Plus, to paraphrase, poorly, Groucho Marx – no way I am going to an event where they would accept me as a guest! Hope it is a resounding success.

I’m in! Let me know if you want help to setup the day/day before, willing to do anything you need. Also, for those that need a place to sleep, I have on offgrid camp on a small pond in nearby Croydon (HSF has been there), which has 4 or 5 places to crash if needed. And I also live about 15 minutes from Manchester airport if anyone needs a ride. Big Dogs (unlike me) get priority.

Nobody else will say it, so I guess it falls to me to point this out:

People, generally, don’t get invitations to Fourth of July parties where they need to buy a ticket. Especially a ticket costing $125, unless the “live music” will be a reunion of the remnant of the Beatles with CSNY as opening act. If you’re doing a fundraiser, then just spell it out from the beginning.

Farming should never become merely a shtick, where you sell glimpses of it to onlookers for $125.

There’s always a negative Nancy in the crowd. Like Judas, these types do not contribute but love to complain and want a double portion of the freebies.

It’s an open invitation, Vodka. But it’s limited and the tickets ensure that limited participation. Imagine the chaotic scene that would develop if HF got rid of the offsetting contribution the way they did at Woodstock.

Back home, they imposed a 25 cent fee to enter a public park. That small amount cut back severely on the idiots who were trashing the place. Imagine if MS-13 found out about this and decided to take advantage of a free offer. If you don’t accept the terms, don’t go.

A schtick?

Our entire living is generated by what the farm produces. Anyone who comes to the farm for visit and a tour, that’s free. When you factor in the cost of slaughtering a steer, a hog and a lamb, and all the rest of the food, the tents, chairs and tables, provide all the labor and the top chef in the state to feed over one hundred people, the wine, beer, and assorted soft drinks, ice, lighting, amenities, setup and cleanup, the live music, the fireworks, and the time and planning that goes into the event, it adds up.

And is it a form of fundraiser? Well, yes, of course it is. This farm is the way I raise funds. I’m out of the picture supporting my family for six months, I lose my most valuable crop for a year because of my injury and I am forced to come up with a creative way to survive another year. I thought that considering the past experience most people have had in dealing with me, whether buying syrup or meats or even just stopping by to show their kids around that it would be a safe bet that they would get their value out of the event. We do it every year and have developed a good following who really enjoy it. If the price is too steep for you, come as my guest.

Hardscrabble, what you’re doing makes total sense. Nobody goes anywhere and eats and enjoys entertainment for free, especially with a large crowd. When you’re invited to a wedding, you at least bring a nice wedding gift. If you’re invited to a party, you bring a gift of food, wine, etc.

When my family has a family reunion, several family members chip in money to buy the main course meat, then everybody else brings something, whether vegetables, fruits, deserts, casseroles and different cold and hot beverages. Some bring extra meats, like grilled or fried chicken. But everybody pitches in to feed the entire large family. Some family members arrive early to help set up and some stay later to help clean up. That’s just how things are done where I come from.

A sincere invite to ‘the readers of this blog’ deserves a sincere reply.

This would be much like stepping back in time for us. For about a decade, my wife’s family would hold their big family reunions at her parents. He was a live-on-the-ranch hand (dozer operator primarily), and they lived in a two bedroom known as ‘the gate house’. The last one held there was about 25 yrs ago. The family reunions went on for a while, diminishing more each year…..now, not so much at all…….

On July 6th, it will be the one year anniversary of my short fall off a long ladder (I passed out as I was heading back up the ladder), that ended with two stints; on July 7th, a quadruple bypass, discharged and sent home on Friday the 13th, and we had to run to my brother-in-law’s house ten hours later (he had his mother living with him) because she couldn’t wake him up ! He died, in his bed, from a heart attack !!! The story goes on……but WTH ?

We, my wife and I, would be ‘in hog heaven’ if we could take the trip, but we have responsibilities here for both of our old moms, ages 86 and 90.

annuit coeptis novus ordo seclorum- “Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away.

Thank you for opening up your farm for all us shit-flinging monkeys. I genuinely wish I could attend, but we are having a family reunion here in Colorado at the same time. In any case, it is too far to travel for a one day event, especially with a 2 year old.

The $125 fee is a steal for an event like this with food like what you promise. My mouth is watering just thinking about pasture-raised, fresh-roasted beef and lamb with a nice Red swerved in the Great Outdoors. Again, I genuinely with I could attend.

My wife and I have talked about touring New England one fall to see the foliage with the rest of the tourists. If/when we make it happen I would love to tour the Hardscrambles Estates.

Hope your leg is healing nicely and I hope the 1st Annual TBP Independence Day Celebration is rousing success in every way.

Having said that , your offer would be a dream come true; to meet and chat with yunz in a beautiful setting with great food and greater conversation.

Two things that have always bothered me about HSF: First, is that he was a successful and prosperous citizen of New Jersey who had a million bucks in cash to buy a farm out of state, and then later brags about having no debt…..just before he presents himself as a charity case. Buyer beware. Especially if it is a pitch to buy unpriced maple syrup where you get the bill later. Many of you know what I’m talking about.

Second, is his denial of the moon landings. I met and became an acquaintance of astronaut Jim Lovell at the Oshkosh fly-in. He is not a liar.

I hardly give things too much thought, Voddy. Why are you worried about what other people have? Ain’t you got enough? All the air you can breathe, plenty of sunshine, all sorts of people to look at or talk to. Roads to drive a truck on or walk down on, stars a’plenty to wish upon. The love of a good dog, a rifle or two, maybe a not too mean woman cookin’ food on the stove, country music on the radio. Ain’t that enough?

So he was successful and was able to buy a farm. What’s the issue? We should celebrate success and hard work. And how the hell is he presenting himself as a charity case? There is not much profit margin on an organic farm, and he will probably only break even on the whole celebration, or schtick as you refer to it . Ever buy a clean grass fed organic cow after being butchered – it ain’t cheap. The only charity involved here is for TBP, and will be much appreciated by most to keep this beacon of light in the darkness going. I’ve seen his maple syrup operation and it is alot of hard labor, probably makes little profit, and provides the goods before payment based on the honor system. Take another sip of your vodka and then pry the hair out of your ass.

Oh and Jimmy Boy Lovell never walked on the fucking moon.

Grass fed organic beef isn’t expensive.
At least around here..
3 bucks a pound Canadian hanging on the hook.. Might be a bit moar this year.
I can fill a freezer for about 600 bucks cut and wrapped.
Gotta give Voddy props for taking this on.
He is getting thumbs up but not a whole lotta support.
125 per person is a bit rich for a poor sod like me..
But its a free country and folks can come or not as they please..
Sounds to me like he ain’t goin’
And also sound like no tears will be shed in the Hampster.

As for Lovell, he still is a good fella with the right stuff..

Organic anything is expensive where I live because, as I’ve stated before, there are few organic farms in my area. But I buy it so I stay healthy. I have to buy food anyway, so why not buy the healthy stuff and eat it rather than spend my money on expensive medical care later that could possibly have been avoided. Also, no sinus problems, which used to be terrible, since I’ve gone organic/grass-fed. And I feel better overall.

I knew someone here had gone organic grass-fed. I just bought a grass fed Angus named Yum who is now eating a bit of grain until he goes to the butcher midmonth.

I plan to track the price per pound and see how much it ends up costing buying from the farmer direct.

Compare it to a political fundraiser dinner at $35,000 a plate, and you’re getting a deal without the bull. 🙂

Around here if you have a party, you tell them to BYOB

and hope they can’t drink . or at least not paying attention while you’re stealing their beer… Best to feed them hot dogs and hamburgers. Why is that. Simple cuz they’re cheap. Sometimes we might splurge on some Lobster, but only when they are on season. Why because around here they’re cheaper than bologna. If timing is right I can get them for nothing as I every spring on setting day work on a boat getting the traps in water. My pay…. 30 pounds. Can get extra for about 5 bucks CAD a pound..

Not too shabby.

I don’t even like lobster.. But the spectacle of watching a dozen drunks pawing over of pile of those critters…

I might be flatlander but I sure don’t ask for grey poupon

It ain’t Red Lobster in these parts.

Perhaps this is the day hell froze over on TBP. But there is Global Warming to blame.

My father, former POW plagued with PTSD but none of us knew it put together a book (11 x 14) with photos and text, handbound one for each immediate family member (10) and offered them for sale to the community for 125 dollars. Why 125?

He didn’t NEED to sell a one of them. HSF and Admin do not have to do what they do here at TBP.

He didn’t WANT to make another one and figured the only people who would pay that kind of money must really like him and he would enjoy their visit. HSF and Admin also assume, probably correctly, something along the same line.

He sold a dozen of those books of his when he was in his late 80s. I hope the TBP gathering is as successful as his late-life publishing venture.

In a different phase of my life, I would have asked MC to jump in the new 4×4 and we would have Thelma and Louise’d it across Appalachia. But, and I quote someone I once knew, “Yesterday has come too soon. It must bid today farewell and gently close the door.”

I got 100 on this one, but it was quite unintended.

Maybe there are city slickers nearby who need to spend a week getting back to the land. Seems to be the demographic that goes for this type of thing..

Buying local shouldn’t be outta the average persons league. And the more I think, the more this offer is outta my league. I just don’t have that kinda disposable income. But power to those who do…That was point Vodka was trying to make. I think.. anyways.

Like I said I deal with a farmer locally who can’t be bothered getting certified organic. That fellow sells quarters cut and wrapped for about 600 to 700 bucks.. Enuf to fill a standup freezer and part another one..

Vodka,

I don’t really have a personal opinion for or against the truth of the moon landing, but you’ve inspired me to look into it further, and hopefully I can come to a reasonable conclusion. I do have a bias and denial of the official government stories on the Kennedy assassination, Oklahoma City Federal Building bombing, 9-11 World Trade Center, Sandy Hook Elementary, Las Vegas music festival, and numerous others.

I note your mention of the Oshkosh fly-in and friendship with astronaut Lovell, and appreciate your defense of his integrity. That said, I would suppose anyone in on any deception would have to stick to the official story. I have attended the big airshow many times, and it was there that I was schooled on the giant hoax of global warming by Burt Rutan, the famous aircraft designer and engineer.

As for HSF, I’ve never met him, and only know him from his numerous writings here, which I consider to be excellent. I would look at his buying a farm in NH and getting out of NJ as further evidence of his high intelligence. If you think his maple syrup is high-priced, don’t buy it. I buy mine at Costco, and it is high there too. (I also get my vodka there, and it’s a bargain!)

The Independence Day bash sounds like a great time, and even though I won’t be able to attend, I hope it’s a great success and a shot in the arm for TBP!

Quick update, there’s been a great response so far, better than I had hoped. Thanks to everyone who has already contacted us and yes, there’s still room at the table.

Vodka, thanks for bringing a new life to the thread even if it was to fling shit. Even so, if you’ve made some claims the least I can do is respond to them. At first I was kind of hurt because it was meant to impugn my character without really revealing a motive. Trolls don’t bother me, but you’ve been around here a while and it seemed personal so I took it to heart.

Charity implies a gift given freely. If someone gets something in return for a price, that’s capitalism. I haven’t asked anyone for charity. We’re throwing a memorable event where a lot of like minded people will be able to get together in a beautiful setting, eat delicious food prepared by a great chef, play games, listen to music, stand around a bonfire, fish in the trout pond, shoot archery, toss horseshoes, and watch fireworks. And we’ll raise a bit of money for our generous host, The Burning Platform. If that’s not worth the price, like others have said, you don’t have to come. If someone really wants to come and can’t afford it they’re welcome and you know it. I even offered to spot you. Your beef is a mystery to me.

What I should mention- and I’ll be writing a longer piece on this- is the response I’ve had from people who read what I write. I don’t know 90% of them except by email or replies to a thread, and some not even that. Since the accident I’ve received close to a hundred cards, letters and packages, every single one of them sent to wish me speedy recovery and to thank me for what I write. Some of them sent coffee and herb teas, honey and books, music and zip-drives full of books on tape, magazines and doo-dads, prayers and baked goods, silver dollars and actual money. All of those gifts were charity I suspect, but not one note made me feel that they hadn’t gotten something out of it too. I can’t tell you how many cards I’ve been forced to write with my bent up fingers to send them my sincere thanks for keeping my spirits up when it looked kind of bleak. I can’t even begin to show my gratitude so this event kind of grew out of that. I hoped to be able to say thank you personally.

I came up with the price based on our projected cost. I’ve done enough of these in the past to know what goes into it, how many things we have to pay out of pocket, paying the young people who will help out, the time involved for all of us, the cost of the provender, etc. $125 seems spot on for the economy up here. What I hadn’t done was see what other people were charging for a similar event, so I just looked.

First one I found-

http://www.outstandinginthefield.com/

They do the same thing with fewer bells and whistles, $225 per person.

I have never sent a bottle of syrup to anyone on TBP or anywhere else without first responding to their email or phone call and in every case I quote or send out my price list. If any person who has ever bought from me had the same experience as Vodka, now’s the time to speak up. And if you didn’t want your syrup all you had to do was send it back, but I know you liked it because it’s the best damn maple syrup on Earth.

You came up with the million dollar figure from RE. He made that number up based on an old listing on the farm from before we bought it. We didn’t pay a million dollars for this farm. Are you RE? Your M.O. seems similar.

What I earned to buy the farm was money I worked for over the course of my adult life and paying off all my debts was part of our plan. It left us with very little in terms of capital, but it also forced us to live within our means. And based on our experience since then it has paid off in enormous social capital. How could an adult who reads TBP have a problem with that kind of judgement?

I’m trying to live the life I want my children to be proud of, to do the right things when they’re hard, and not to get caught up in the world even if we still live in it. And I’ve been sharing everything- from the writing about our lives to an event like this where real people can meet other real people based on their common interests. I’ve made some mistakes and had some setbacks, but it has gotten easier to do with each passing day because doing the right thing feeds on itself. I’ve had a lot of people from TBP come up here over the years and made some very good friends as a result of having Jim allow me to post to his site and I’m indebted. I hope this get together feeds people in more ways than one.

We never went to the Moon.

Absolutely! I’ve ordered their seeds for years. Their family is beautiful, their catalog is gorgeous and informative, their seeds are awesome and from around the world as well as the U.S.

They are family owned. I have always ordered Heirloom seeds and save them to grow succeeding years. And even share them with others. They will always grow true to their nature. Hybrid – genetically modified seeds never grow back true, if ever at all. And many are laced with Monsanto/Bayer toxic chemicals – like glyphosate.

Look up the reports from Vandana Shiva for an eyeopener about what is in our food and seeds.

It’s why I never jump into the fray to defend, Hardscrabble. He can definitely defend himself. Although there was one time I offered; but it proved unnecessary then as well. Good thing too, because it would have been very unfriendly.

I realize many on this thread may be down on Vodka and I’ve always preferred whiskey myself, but I’ll just say his honesty on many a thread hath sharpened my own perspectives and likely better than the echo chambers in the halls of Hallmark.

One does wonder, however, how many dopples dabble daily in dividedly and doubly disguised denunciations?

Regardless, people are entitled to their opinions that speak volumes about themselves and King James once wrote:

Mac, we have few women here. Uncola quoted a line from a Jack Nicholson movie: how do you write women so well? I start with a man and then remove all reason and accountability

Damn, this is tough … not sure if I can make it or not. Might not know (work demands) until a week or two ahead. This is a one-day deal, right? Fly up the day before and leave the next?
I see 22WinMag has a couple more activities listed – are these solid? Starting sometime Friday and going through Saturday’s picnic? Where do you fly in to in order to get in on these?
I may buy a ticket and not be able to go – but it sure sounds like a good time. Maybe I’m just to easily led –

Call me or email if you want more details about airports, activities, lodging, etc. It’s a resort area because of the lake and the mountain so if you are an outdoors kind of person you could easily fill any extra time. Our event is an all day thing.

Jimbo, just go for it. You missed Woodstock, don’t miss this once in a lifetime event. The NYC reunion was also a once in a lifetime party complete with nekkid women.

While HF can’t promise Trump will be there, it’s very likely Admin will be there since he has been 86’d from the roach motel by the beach.
