It was 60 degrees two days in a row in NH two weeks ago. Yellow jackets came out of hiberation and were buzzing around like crazy. Then 24 hours later temps plunged to below freezing. The next morning they were all dead and littered everywhere.
This may not end well.

Having almost been killed by yellow jackets a couple of years ago when I hit a tree stump with my lawn mower that had a nest in it (I got a hundred stings) your comment reads like one with a happy ending to me.
Yellow jackets are really cranky . They will chase you a long ways, if you disturb their nest. I didn’t have 100 stings but about 14 and it made me pretty sick.

I knew that going into my comment, but they must play some role in the food chain, and getting killed off en masse can’t be good.
Knew a guy who “raised” them – he would put out cookie trays of sugar water. He said after a few weeks the yellow jackets knew who he was, and would not sting him. He could pick them up (gently!) or have them light on him, wander around, and fly off.
His wife made him quit – she found it too weird for words. I wonder if they could be trained to defend the territory for you?
I have an even freakier story.
I went around my basement and perimeter of my house destroying spider webs and nests and egg clusters with a broom and a paint scraper one day.
On the 2nd or 3rd night later, I was bitten on the cheek an inch below my eye in the middle of the night. I felt the bite and slapped at something but feel back asleep. Then I was fucked for a month with oozing sores appearing randomly all over my body.
Black widow or some other spider taking revenge? Did a spider not see things “eye to eye” with me?
