Trump Just Might Have Won the 2020 Election Today

Guest Post by Nick Gillespie

The president’s speech at CPAC was a bedazzling mix of bravado, B.S., humor, and positive vision no Democrat will be able to top.

Twitter

It’s way too early to be thinking this, much less saying it, but what the hell: If Donald Trump is able to deliver the sort of performance he gave today at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC), the annual meeting of right-wingers held near Washington, D.C., his reelection is a foregone conclusion.

There is simply no potential candidate in the Democratic Party who wouldn’t be absolutely blown off the stage by him. I say this as someone who is neither a Trump fanboy nor a Never Trumper. But he was not simply good, he was Prince-at-the-Super-Bowl great, deftly flinging juvenile taunts at everyone who has ever crossed him, tossing red meat to the Republican faithful, and going sotto voce serious to talk about justice being done for working-class Americans screwed over by global corporations.

In a heavily improvised speech that lasted over two hours, the 72-year-old former (future?) reality TV star hit every greatest hit in his repertoire (“Crooked Hillary,” “build the wall,” “America is winning again,” and more all made appearances) while riffing on everything from the Green New Deal to his own advanced age and weird hair to the wisdom of soldiers over generals. At times, it was like listening to Robin Williams’ genie in the Disney movie Aladdin, Howard Stern in his peak years as a radio shock jock, or Don Rickles as an insult comic. When he started making asides, Trump observed, “This is how I got elected, by going off script.” Two years into his presidency and he’s just getting warmed up.

First and foremost, Trump was frequently funny and outre in the casually mean way that New Yorkers exude like nobody else in America. “You put the wrong people in a couple of positions,” he said, lamenting the appointment of Robert Mueller as a special prosecutor, “and all of a sudden they’re trying to take you out with bullshit.” He voiced Jeff Sessions in a mock-Southern accent, recusing “muhself” and asked the adoring crowd why the former attorney generally hadn’t told him he was going to do that before he was appointed.

Democrats backing the Green New Deal (GND) “are talking about trains to Hawaii,” he said. “They haven’t figured out how to get to Europe yet.” He begged the Democrats not to abandon the GND because he recognizes that the more its details and costs are discussed, the more absurd it will become. “When the wind stops blowing, that’s the end of your energy,” he said at one point. “Did the wind stop blowing, I’d like to watch television today, guys?” “We’ll go back to boats,” he said, drawing huge laughs when he added, “I don’t want to talk [the Democrats] out of [the GND], I just want to be the Republican who runs against it.”

He railed against Never-Trump Republicans: “They’re on mouth-to-mouth resuscitation,” he said, adding “they’re basically dishonest people” that no one cares about. He joked about being in the White House all alone on New Year’s because of the government shutdown. “I was in the White House and I was lonely, so I went to Iraq,” he said, recounting that when his plane was approaching the U.S. airstrip in Iraq, all lights had to be extinguished for landing. “We spend trillions of dollars in the Middle East and we can’t land planes [in Iraq] with the lights on,” he said, shaking his head in disbelief. “We gotta get out.” He then riffed on the generals he met there who, contrary to the Pentagon brass he dealt with, said they could vanquish ISIS in a week. He claimed to have talked with a general named “Raising Cane,” which might be Brigadier Gen. J. Daniel Caine, but Trump is the farthest thing from a details guy, right? “Sometimes I learn more from soldiers than I do generals,” he said, deftly moving from jokes to more-substantive discussions of policies or issues.

You can cover a huge amount of material in two-hours-plus, and Trump certainly did that. After speaking sympathetically of immigrants who want to come to the United States and saying that we need more people because the economy (well, his economy, as he takes credit for it) is doing so well, he immediately dismissed the Guatemalans, Salvadorans, and Hondurans traveling north in caravans across Mexico. In a bizarre display of simultaneous empathy and contempt, he talked at length about how female migrants are being systematically “raped” but also how the caravans were filled with criminals and drug dealers. It was “sad to see how stupid we’ve become” to think that the caravans are filled with good people. As he has been doing since his State of the Union address, he has been laying out a partial, inchoate case for a skills-based immigration program. He explained walking away from the table with North Korea even as he noted yet again that he has a great relationship with the dictator Kim Jong Un. In a long riff on trade policy, he invoked the “Great Tariff Debate of 1888” and how China “and everyone else” had been taking advantage of us until he started pushing back. He took time to talk about how no, really, the crowd at his inauguration was in fact historically large despite all publicly available evidence.

All in all, it was, in the words of Daniel Dale, the Washington correspondent for the Toronto Star, “one of the least-hinged speeches Trump has given in a long time.” It was indeed all over the place but like the weirdly wide-ranging and digressive speech in which he declared a national emergency, it was also an absolute tour de force, laying out every major point of disagreement between Republicans and Democrats (abortion, the Second Amendment, and taxes, among other things) while tagging the latter aggressively as socialists who will not only end the private provision of health care but take over the energy sector too. Those charges take on new life in the wake of the announcement of the GND and comments, however short-lived, by Democrats such as Kamala Harris, who at one point recently called for an end to private health care. And over 100 House Democrats have signed on to a plan that would end private health insurance in two years. For all the biting criticism and dark humor in today’s speech, Trump has mostly ditched the “American Carnage” rhetoric that marked his first Inaugural Address, pushing onto liberals and Democrats all the negativity and anger that used to surround him like the dust cloud surrounds Pigpen in the old Peanuts cartoons. “We have people in Congress right now who hate our country,” he said. “We can name every one of them. Sad, very, very sad.”

At moments, he seemed to be workshopping his themes and slogans for 2020. “We believe in the American Dream, not the socialist nightmare,” he averred at one point. “Now you have a president who finally standing up for America.” The future, he said “does not belong to those who believe in socialism. The future belongs to those who believe in freedom. I’ve said it before and will say it again: America will never be a socialist country.” That’s a line that may not work forever, but it will almost certainly get the job done in 2020.

None of this is to suggest that this speech wasn’t as fact-challenged as almost every utterance Trump has given since announcing his candidacy for the Republican nomination (go to Daniel Dale’s Twitter thread for a running count of misstatements of fact). He hammered trade deficits in a way that will remind anyone with an undergrad economics course under their belt that he fundamentally doesn’t know what he’s talking about. He misrepresented both NAFTA and the new trade bill he crafted with Mexico and Canada, and at the exact moment that hundreds of wearied listeners started leaving the ballroom at The Gaylord Resort and Convention Center, he claimed that not a single person had left their seat.

But the 2020 presidential race is not going to be decided based on which candidate is more tightly moored to reality. It’s going to be decided, like these things always are, by the relative health of the economy and the large vision of the future the different candidates put forward. As the economy continues to expand (however anemically compared to historical averages) and he continues to avoid credible charges of impeachable offenses, Trump is becoming sunnier and sunnier while the Democrats are painting contemporary America as a late-capitalist hellhole riven by growing racial, ethnic, and other tensions.

Trump isn’t the creator of post-factual politics in America, he is merely currently its most-gifted practitioner (oddly, his ideological and demographic counterpart and fellow New Yorker Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez may become a challenger to him on precisely this score). Trump may have next to no credibility in profoundly disturbing ways, but American politics has been drifting away from reality for the entire 21st century, when the 2000 election was essentially decided by a coin flip, the United States entered the Iraq War under false premises, and Barack Obama took home Politifact’s 2013 “Lie of the Year” award and dissembled unconvincingly in the wake of Edward Snowden’s revelations.

That Trump didn’t invent the current situation doesn’t mean we shouldn’t be concerned about it, but if he can continue to perform the way he did today at CPAC, it remains to be seen what Democratic rival can rise to that challenge.

Seeing people tried and convicted for what happened during the last transition of power will do a lot more than preaching to the choir.

@22, it occurs to me from watching the start of that video that the fundamental reason Trump got elected was to protect Israel from Iran. I think we see the two democrats here: the old school traitorous White democrats and the non-white man pets that are by demographic smelling taking over the Democrat Party. The Jews are using our tax money to fund Islamic conquest and also Islamic feminism. It seems to me that Trump is the Jewish choice vs. Obama as the pet’s choice but in particular the Muslims. How to use Muslims without destroying the Jews?

But wait, there’s more. I don’t think the Jews are on top. They are the natural administrative class of the putative Jewish social engineers. Nevertheless, these uberJews may want to protect Israel. It is certainly their vision to leverage Judaism and rule the world from Jerusalem a la Isaiah, final chapter. The Jews will be used as covert shock troops as always for the ego trip. The point here is that Trump is a regulator of Muslim aggression to get the desired NWO outcome. The Iranian deal could have been the big deal, but then where was the retribution to Obama from crossing the Establishment, as Obama did to Rod Blagojevich? It is hard to explain except to assume (((they))) have priorities and that the inefficiency is useful static for cover of their Hegelian dialectic control. Still, quite the swing from helping Iran (enough to be nuclear threat to Israel?) to keeping the economic sanctions in place. US treatment of the Iranians since 1953 has been contemptible. We deserve any hate they have. Rank-and-file Americans are so clueless. Anyway, wondering how the Establishment regards the Iranian deal and its relevance to 2020 race. Is there a second viable faction in the Establishment? I wonder if future Western historians will be able to piece this together definitively. And I am glad to see that the commenters here are moving toward seeing Trump as the shill he is.

I think Trump is a transitional president that won’t be in office when change really starts to happen in this country. I see him as the disrupt er of the status quo. I think that is why he was voted into office.

Trump is an elite with a personality. He is doing what he promised by draining the swamp and exposing it’s creatures as we see every night on the nightly news. It is easy for him because he knows them all.

In my opinion 2020 is going to be an interesting election year. Lots of young blood will be running for office. The old guard is leaving or being booted out of office. This will be good for the country.

With young blood coming into power I see socialism rising and capitalism waning. The young are fed up with capitalism because it’s current structure does not benefit the working class. That is not to say that capitalism will be abandoned but instead be balanced with social structures. There are many reasons for this.

In my gut I think Trump will be a one term president. As I said at the beginning of this comment he was elected to be a disrupt er of the status quo and drain the swamp. He has completed his mission. Now it is up to the public and the new people entering congress to clean out the rubbish from the swamp and to build a new domestic and foreign policy.

tampaRed,

Most of Europe is socialist. They did well until the EU let all those invaders in that sucked up all the money. The same is true here. Free education from K to 12, food stamps, welfare checks, medicade, school lunches are all socialist programs.

What hurt this country is fiat money and quantitative easing.

Ned: “It’s all theater”.

I can envision the Big Debate in September, 2020 where the organizers and media have a sure fire plan to emasculate The Donald. No more wandering around with a mic and sneaking up on his opponent from behind; his mic will be nailed down to his small podium-he is blunted while the Megan look-alike is getting ready to unload on him.

As all eyes are on him he calmly reaches inside his suit coat, pulls out his own mic, and starts stalking the hapless opponent and cuts them down like the stray dog they are.

It’s all theater.

Trump gives a used car salesman a bad name. He is a 100% zionist surround by neo cons and zionists. How can anyone justify kusner, the zionist, close to the center of the govt.

His campaign “promises” were absolute BS and now, as evidenced by the bully tactics of the thugs in suits around him, how does he expect any country in the world to provide support.

Domestically, until I start to see perp walks by the clinton crime family, et al the doj, the fbi coup leaders, plotters, stop with the bull sheet. “Trust the plan, trust blah, blah, 5000 sealed indictments, wait, wait, it is coming.”

“Demographics is destiny.” “Personnel is policy.” Population is culture.

The cheat machine does not care about Trump’s charisma. I heard that several states including CA will legislate or have legislated that the popular vote of all those states in the pact will determine all their combined Electoral College votes. That will subvert votes in any states in the pact that actually vote net Republican. Moreover, Dems are openly cheating of vote tallies. Florida could flip on the voting felons alone. 2020 is not in the bag for Trump unless there is some Establishment fix. Hillary will not get prosecuted for treason. Trump will not get hurt by impeachment inquisition. All for chronic stress and polarization of the American public. Is 2020 fixed? I don’t mean will it be corrupt. I mean is the outcome of whether Trump wins or loses determined now? The (((smart))) people know to be patient to make the kill with the desired effect. I think TPTB have every reason to get Trump reelected, but I am not sure they have enough control to do it. The pets are taking over like Mamluks. I think the pets must barring some incredibly crass, out-of-place court ruling that strangely sticks to put Trump over the top. In this police state it can be done, but only with a queer spectacle. So I’d say the thing to watch is the pet majority verses any unexpectedly ‘conservative’ court rulings, something where Kavanaugh pretends to be a conservative and cuckservative Christians believe in it as proof of Trump’s selection by God to get ‘er done in the second term. Dumbasses everywhere.

Did I mention demographics is destiny? The only questions left are: When are white men literally exterminated by state power? and what will be the response of Christian cucks? You would do well to bookmark this genius insight for future reference so you don’t go astray in your interpretation of the political circus to come. I bid you search on the terms FRED, white, man, labor, participation, rate and see what is in store. No livelihood, no life. One thing (((they))), women, and the orcs all want is MOAR! That 500-year-old bugaboo ain’t gonna die on it’s own, and if it did, the satisfaction of higher rank by co-option and destruction would be lost. The alliance wants the kill. There is no escape. You have to see the “long view”. The reason a radical like Obama made it into office was the (((media’s))) swinging of the public pendulum of opinion after 8 years of Bush. (((TPTB))) figure if we get 8 years of Trump, the moronic public will be good and ready to welcome a truly scary socialist with open arms. Why do you think each and every “democrat”, socialist, library and anyone else is throwing their hat in the ring for the 2020 Presidential elections? (((They))) are conditioning the masses for 2024, when the fourth turning is really going to get started in earnest. Please buckle your seatbelt and return your seat and tray table to its upright position. It’s going to be a REALLY REALLY rough ride. YMMV. Good luck, we’re gonna need it.

'Reality' Doug

Does your comment mean that you think the fix is in for Trump to win in 2020? I think all the Dems are trying to be president ’cause they want to win. It will be interesting to see what cheating will be necessary to outdo the cheating in the rank-and-file vampires. I think the socialist bomb will drop no later than the next Democrat presidency and that president will be elected no later than 2024, but I am not sure TPTB would want that. The longer they play this game of institutional devotion from cucks, the weaker the showdown resistance will be. Trump can get more decline work done within the Overton window than anyone else from here on. He is bring in more foreigners it would seem. To execute this overall plan perfectly is to win anticlimactically. I think the pets will smell victory for themselves and push socialism as I just said, more or less on your time table I think. If the Jews/Illuminati have their way, this will go on another 10 or 20 years beyond the mid 2020s prediction of the Fourth Turning. I don’t think the grassroots Right will ever accept a scary socialist. I don’t think there is a middle. The Left was good and ready in 2016! The Right can be put in a deeper hole though. It is hard to govern from the middle at all and Trump makes it look easy. I think the Jews/Illuminati would have such presidents indefinitely if they could. At least that’s what I would do. We are forced to conjecture given that the proof is the volume and long-standing trend of circumstantial evidence but not the quality of it. We really don’t know who is the true top of this Establishment plot. I think SHTF when Fourth Turning book says, probably. It will be fitting for the last president of this farcical republic to be the opposite of a traditional white man. The first Jew president would be fitting as well, but I’m looking for a female President Camacho II with no meaningful amount of white DNA. That would be Kamala Harris or Michelle O. Bernie has lots of Left wing support and likely winner. I change my guess from Kamala, but Bernie is too old to try again from zero in 2024. I really don’t feel all that confident picking a particular course of history in the 2020 election, but I will guess that Trump wins in 2020 and the Dem socialist elected in 2024 will effect the coup d’etat or some similar denouement to end this madness. I’m not sure whites would not produce for a dictatorship or other autocracy, but the good news is that the white-man haters will accept nothing short of total animal victory. It will likely be impossible to hold the orc coalition together without a common enemy of exploitable economic value. I fear Jesus more than the devil at this point, for the adverse influences on White people. Good luck to you too!

If they want him in another 4 years, they will create one of the following situations:
1. a high profile liberal splits from the DNC and runs as 3rd party
2. The Democrats run someone so completely fucking repugnant that it leaves no other choice for most voters

At least those are the two most common ways the system usually fixes elections.
