Defining Liberty

Guest Post by Jeff Thomas

Here we have a most interesting collection of signage. Some low-level civil servant who’s in charge of deciding what the motorist may do at this particular junction has become quite thorough in creating restrictions.

The motorist may not proceed, may not turn left or right, and, most interestingly, in the second sign from the bottom, may not reverse out. In essence, “You’re stuck here and whatever you do to get out, you’re in violation of the rules we’ve placed upon you.”

Of course, if we were to encounter this particular intersection, we might say, “That’s absurd – they can’t possibly hold me to this.”

But, interestingly, under the traffic laws, a policeman can cite us for violating the signage. If we’re lucky, he might agree that it’s absurd and give us a break, but his job is to enforce it, regardless of its absurdity. And if he enjoys his position of authority, as many in his position do, he just may choose to demonstrate his power.

And, if we defy him, we’re in real trouble.

How many laws exist in the US today? The answer is that no one knows. It’s too complex to define. There are roughly 20,000 laws regarding gun control alone – and that’s just the federal laws. State, county and city laws also exist in abundance.

The level of governmental dominance now exists to such a degree that literally everyone is a criminal, whether they know it or not. It’s been estimated that the average American commits about three felonies per day, in addition to many lesser crimes. If, for any reason, the authorities wished to victimize you, they’d find their task quite simple.

Yet, there’s a general assumption amongst those who simply accept the laws that are heaped upon their shoulders, that they were somehow “necessary,” that legislators only pass laws if they have no other choice.

In my estimation, this view is diametrically opposite to what is true. One of my own principles regarding governance is,

“It is the primary business of any government to grow its own power and wealth at the expense of its people.”

This is an important principle to understand, as it opens the mind to recognize that governments always move in a direction of increased control. Given enough time, governments will always create a state of despotism. And, historically, no government has ever reversed its level of control and introduced greater liberty.

It then follows that each country is in the process of becoming increasingly tyrannical. The only difference between them is the degree of tyranny that’s been achieved so far.

Liberty and governmental control are polar opposites. Yet, most people have a rather vague perception of the term “liberty” and might even find it difficult to define. This is unfortunate, as it means that, when liberty is lost, those same people will be unlikely to recognize the fact.

Here are two good working definitions of liberty, courtesy of the dictionary:

“The power or scope to act as one pleases.”

“The state of being free within society from oppressive restrictions imposed by authority on one’s way of life, behavior, or political views.”

The first is interesting, as it suggests that liberty means each person doing exactly as he pleases. Doug Casey often offers a similarly simple, but more refined rule of life:

“Do as thou wilt, but be prepared to accept the consequences.”

The latter dictionary definition is probably in keeping with the perception of most Americans around 1800, but today’s American would caution that, “Ideally, that would be true, but without our current laws and regulations, there’d be chaos.

Libertarians would disagree and offer only two principles that they believe would largely negate the need for laws:

“Do all that you say that you’ll do and don’t initiate aggression against another person or his property.”

And, again, non-libertarian thinkers would shake their heads and assert that this would result in chaos. Americans have become indoctrinated to believe this through slow measures. As Thomas Jefferson said,

“Even under the best forms of Government, those entrusted with power have, in time, and by slow operations, perverted it into tyranny.”

The key to governmental domination is that we tend to tolerate the loss of liberty if it’s taken away slowly.

In the US, liberty has been in decline, by my reckoning, for about one hundred years, but has been in rapid decline since 2001.

Of course, in all countries, at some point, the governmental domination becomes so intolerable that the people rise up. Revolution follows – a period of great upheaval and hardship. Eventually, a recovery begins and the entire process starts over.

It stands to reason that the best place to be is a country that has already recovered and is in the reconstruction stage – a time when liberty is at its greatest.

The US was in this stage in the nineteenth century – a period of great expansion and development.

However, by the mid-twentieth century, the rot had set in. America was past its peak and was ready to begin the final, and most rapid, period of decline.

At that time, the Russian Ayn Rand, living in the US, stated,

“We are fast approaching the stage of the ultimate inversion: the stage where the government is free to do anything it pleases, while the citizens may act only by permission; which is the stage of the darkest periods of human history, the stage of rule by brute force.”

At the time Ms. Rand made this statement, she was largely dismissed. After all, Americans had never seen riot squads, dressed in black and heavily-armed, barging into homes without a warrant.

Authorities did not yet have the legal right to confiscate all of the possessions of an individual, based upon suspicion alone.

Yet, this is exactly what Ms. Rand warned against when she said, “the stage of total dominance is fast approaching.”

In reflection, we can have a laugh at the signage above, as it was clearly created by a low-level civil servant who was careless with his own puffed-up authority to the point of creating an absurdity.

But, in the larger picture, the signs are equally in place. Liberty in the US, at this point, is all but extinguished. And greater restrictions are being written every day.

The reader is left with a choice. He can either accept the signs that tell him he’s not allowed to go left, right, forward or back and wait until his government instructs him as to what he’s allowed to do, or he may say, “That’s it – I’m reversing out of here and finding a location where liberty is still in abundance.”

Not to worry, the 4th Turning despite many prognosticators saying “it’s different this time” is here and is, in fact, shaping up to be the proverbial double whammy of an internal and an external existential crisis simultaneously!

4th Turnings are the collapse and reconstruction mentioned in the article…..America has had three 4th turnings (every 80 years or so….a long human life span). 1776, 1860 and 1940…….One clear external, one clear internal crisis and 1776 being mostly external with a good measure of internal. For 2020 we are looking at real war (vs. the small wars of choice, wars of empire) with China, Russia, Iran as opponents. I wish it were not so but events just have a rhythm of their own. Trump is unwilling to sacrifice America to China and the Globalists and China’s leaders realize that their hold on power will be terminated if they cannot keep the population pacified. Immovable Object meets Irresistible Force…..Trade wars are just precursors to shooting wars. See…… the 1930s or the last 4th Turning.

On the internal side, our budding civil war between collectivists and those who support the supremacy of the individual would be a 4th Turning all on its own if/when the Left regains power expect them to start putting conservative in re-education/extermination camps triggering a violent resistance.

The economy is ready to run right off the rails but that’s OK, the war economy is going to fix that very quickly.

Silly me I was actually starting to think maybe we could avoid the normal chaos and bloodshed of the 4th Turning…..nope it’s going to get very nasty very quickly. Folks it’s 1775, 1859 and 1939…….Government tyranny is also part of this process……and the overreach is going to drive the crisis and eventual recovery.

“Don’t worry if you are not now a warrior…….soon you will be” 13th Warrior……

Anon, i feel trump is actually giving us a fighting chance for our liberty from within and externally. I feel hillary and any dem running today would gladly sell us out to the highest bidder and give all our shit away to keep us poor and in slavery so they elitist can control the world under globalism. They know they must create a crisis to get the guns out of americans hands then the world is completely helpless. We are the worlds last nation with supposedly free gun ownership although there are over 20,000 federal and state laws limiting guns. Plus counties and cities. Maybe one day when that redneck with his gun and bible saves this nation they will learn and respect it but i fear its too late for that. They are all happy to control a shit hole and be in power positions vs living an abundant free life like everyone else. Yet they extoll the benefits of socialism but these fuckers want to part of being equal. They really believe some animals are created more equal. Its gonna get much much worse before the end of this 4th turning that guaranteed if we are judging by history millions died and few have today so if history is the telltale sign china/russia may be the external and the dems winning may be the internal surely.

And yet our millennials have been indoctrinated to believe that even bigger government and more control will be the answer.
The biggest fault with socialism is that these idiots believe that government and the people in power would be benevolent and hold the interests of the populace as paramount….fools and historical illiterates one and all.

Freedom of Religion includes “Government” and “Socialism”. Although those stretch the definition of religion into “Death Cult” territory.

This what they are doing to trump. They wanted him to use exec powers to stop the mueller redacting from public, his tax returns. They wanted his son to plead the 5th. All for an election narrative. There seems to be a day of reckoning coming no matter which political side you are on. They both seem to really just want to dominate us all. The rino republicans are wolves in sheeps clothing whereas, because of trump, the democrats mow strut openly of being wolves. All dem candidates today are openly calling for the abolishment of the 2nd and restrictions on the 1st. They feel they don’t even need to discuss their guaranteed removal of the remaining amendments when they win. They just may soon find out how far people will be tolerant and sit in that cul de sac until, like a cornered cat with nothing to lose they will understand their mistakes. But it will take until the cornered cat realizes he is cornered, who, his oppressors really are, and that there is no way out, and then only about 3% will choose to die on their feet vs live on their knees, as history has proven each time. The 80/20 rule in these instances seem to be the rule of 97/3.

Thus the slow boiling frog strategy….whether it is 3% targeted inflation (aka stealth government confiscation of your wealth) or the incremental regulation and now accelerating take over of the economy (Obamacare was a watershed) to the again creeping corruption in DC…..remember its seldom left vs. right it is more likely DC vs.the Rest of Us!

Whatever happened to the great idea of: Any new legislation submitted must first find 2 existing laws that can, and must be eliminated from the books, before a vote can even be cast on the new rules proposal?

Woe to you scribes and Pharisees. You place packs and heavy burdens upon the backs of others, that you yourselves refuse to bear.
…or something like that.
Legislators feel it’s their duty to create new laws. Pompous pricks.
Here’s hoping the ones who draft, vote for, or support red flag legislation gaining momentum in anti 2A groups across the land will be the first ones dangling from lamp poles or the gallows.
Liberty or death, right?

“It is the primary business of any government to grow its own power and wealth at the expense of its people.”

Interesting to see a liberty writer claiming the definition “business” includes Mass Armed Robbery (irs), Mass Theft (fed), and Massive Violent Domination (regs).

Wonder if I need a permit to get into a business like that? Or just good gang management?

The majority of current public officials will never do the right thing just because it is the right thing. We are way past that point. They will do whatever keeps them in power.

That being said, the only thing that will significantly change anything at all for the better in the USA will be a great involuntary reset that must tear everything down to the very bedrock foundation of this country and causes a great do-over. Great war, depression, natural disaster, the rapture, all of the above, etc., etc., etc.

The problem with that is it will be very ugly and ultimately who ends up in charge of the do-over.

My only hope this time around is that Jesus post second coming is the one in charge of it.
