The principal of a New Jersey middle school was leading a graduation rehearsal Friday when student stabbed him in the chest multiple times, police said.

The student, a 14-year-old boy who was not identified, ran across the gym at Union School in Rutherford, New Jersey, and attacked Principal Kurt Schweitzer with a folding knife, according to the city’s police department.

After the stabbing, the student “turned around, dropped the knife and put his hands up in the air,” police said.

Schweitzer and the student were both treated for injuries that were not life threatening.

“No one is in danger, no students were hurt,” the police department wrote on their Facebook page.

The student was taken into custody and has been charged with two counts of aggravated assault and two weapon possession charges, a police statement said. The teen was in custody Friday evening.

Authorities said police officers will be attending the school’s graduation on Wednesday as a precaution.

Aggravated assault? Shouldn’t it be attempted murder? Anybody want to guess the race? Is the kid still going to attend graduation?

I find graduation ceremonies for elementary and middle schools utterly ridiculous. It’s all about making the parents feel good about their precious little angels. We didn’t have graduation ceremonies in the late 70s-early 80s. We just got the hell out of there on the last day of school. I didn’t need a diploma for grades that mean nothing.

I remember the day vividly when the line “schools out forever” finally had true meaning… glorious!

grad ceremonies are 4 the parents mostly, but some of the kids like it also–
in ’76,they could still intimidate us,”if you do not come to the grad ceremony you will not receive a diploma, only a certificate of attendance.”
if they tried that today they could probably be sued–

I attended my sister’s grade school graduation in 1974. The guest speaker was Barry Goldwater. To the best of my knowledge, nobody attending pulled a knife. The night was punctuated by a streaker.

I work for the local township and if there’s anything I would admit despising, it’s the public school’s 6th, 7th, and 8th grade kids. There are some who are foul-mouthed, loud, disrespectful, and destructive of public property. They typically come from a more transient population living in apartments, trailer parks, or state-mandated housing developments that will soon increase school populations and aggravate the already miserable daily traffic. Because there’s a lack of corporal punishment and quick discipline in the schools these little trolls think nothing of mouthing off or messing with adults to get some “cool points” with their little friends.
We had one private school in the township that has closed. The kids were better disciplined and I, for one, will miss many of them as they transfer to an adjoining school in the next township over. As time goes on there will be more Orthodox Jews, Hispanics, and low income dreck moving into my NJ town and it will soon look like neighboring Lakewood, NJ, in 10 to 15 years.
Once the Orthodox Jews and minorities get a voting majority on the local school board this town will be finished. I hope to be gone to greener pastures by then because the yeshivas will divert most of the tax dollars, decimate the extra-curricular activities and kill the public school system, leaving the town for low income residents, minorities, and the retirement communities.
Think Ramapo, NY, and you’ll understand. Forty years ago I grew up in Midwest farm country where we settled things with our fists and didn’t need knives or metal detectors. Sad.

only the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade kids typically come from a more transient population? I hear you on the Orthodox takeover gutting the school system. Have read about that elsewhere.
