She claims that the concrete gets harder when submerged in sea water. So what explains the resilience of all the above-ground concrete. That is the take-home question from her findings (not that I question that Roman concrete is way better than our current stuff…she just doesn’t answer all the questions).

Actually, the question that was seeking to answer is what the Roman concrete was made from and she is getting pretty close.

If you think that modern concrete is resilient than you don’t realize how reactive our concrete is with salt water. Just have a look at all the corrosion in the concrete overpasses in those cold climate areas that salt their roads in the winter. Salt (and specifically salt water when the ice melts with the salt) is devastating to concrete.

I think it’s fascinating that the Romans used salt water in some combination with very specific volcanic rocks and now this discovery of aluminum tobermorite as ingredients.

Hopefully it will lead to a better concrete for us now.

Not thinking that modern concrete is anything but marginal at best. Just saying that she hasn’t solved the entire mystery yet as she has not explained yet how the stuff OUT of the water appears to hold up as well as the stuff under the water. One part of the recipe is still absent….but yes, she is definitely onto something and would be a great solution to our horrible road conditions, especially in areas using road salts, or near bodies of salt water, etc.

There was a recently published list of the 12 states with the worst roads and streets in the US. Delaware is rated as #1, the worst. Haven’t been there in 51 years so I have no idea. The idea that Illinois is not on the list and at least 12 other states have worse roads is frightening. To be worse than Illinois they would have to have palisades of rebar and potholes the size of lakes.

I’ve lived in Wilmington, Delaware for the last 35 years. That assertion is a complete lie. Not to be an apologist for the very blue and very dysfunctional Delaware State government mind you. Spare me. But if you go across our State lines into either New Jersey, Pennsylvania or Maryland, as I do on a regular basis, it is readily apparent that the roads are demonstrable worse in those States. . Jersey being 1rst worst and PA a close second. Whom ever wrote that is/are abject liars.

Probably written by the state of Illinois. LOL! Our roads are horrendous with monster potholes even on the interstates.

I drove trough Illinois on my way to Fond du Lac, the over passes had rebar sticking out of them.

Fact.

I am a native of St. Mary’s County. Leonardtown. Nice to know you.

P.S…. At least in the southern part of the state, I think MD roads are some of the best I’ve ever been on.

The Romans had better things to do with new monies they STOLE from their citizens than keep rebuilding the roads. And they knew that the ONLY way they would keep the far reaches of the empire subdued and compliant, was to be able to march a few hundred thousand soldiers and their carts, down well-built roads every now and then to kick some ass. Today, the current empire has boot-licking supporters on every block and has little need to worry about the roads WE all need to create wealth.

What job creating resource has not been tapped to even close to its maximum potential? The ability of people to provide data for eternal storage. It would be hard to calculate the maximum amount of storage needed if every person started very detailed ARK-HIVING. Data storage needs could be increased to nearly immeasurable levels with incredibly minimal efforts by people…Simply typing and saving experiences, stories, and thoughts.

Current Romans are incapable of building a sandbox much less anything of substance. Smart folks with slaves were able to do incredible things, like build those roads and aqueducts.

But now, with no slaves, and a population largely comprised of idiots, great things have become nigh on impossible to create. Everyone wants a say, no one wants to do the actual work. I would rather one Da Vinci than a hundred million idiots.

Not suggesting that there should be slaves, mind you, but just pointing out the reality of it.
