In the popular vote system, your dumb ass neighbor can cancel your vote so that the dumber majority ends up picking the winner.
In the electoral college plan, you vote for a person who votes for the candidate you would have wanted to win regardless of whether you voted for that candidate.
Either way, American voters get played; the machines game the system to make sure they get or keep the power.
Try reading the Federalist Papers which provides the concurrent explanation from the dudes who wrote the Constitution. The electoral college serves two primary purposes: Ensuring that small population states still have a voice in national elections and to provide a last ditch bulwark against electing a tyrant.
Say a socialist like AOC (when she is 35) looks poised to win the presidency…the electors could block that. In 2016 the Democrats actually tried to convince the electors to block Trump…..
The left hates the Electoral College because it makes their take over of America just that much harder.
The Electoral College also has a corollary benefit of limiting a recount to a state or two. Anyone who’s ever hand-counted a bunch of currency knows you make smaller stacks of bills, so that if you lose count, you don’t have to start all over. If you thought the 2000 Florida recount was tough, imagine a close national popular vote that required a nationwide recount. If the Republican started pulling ahead, the Dems would be “finding” more ballots in Philly and Chicago and on Indian Reservations. Dems in California would just keep “harvesting” ballots until they win.
Without an electoral college the rest of us in Flyover Country are prospective victims of urban/suburban fools who believe in a simple direct majority. One look at the 2016 National Election demographic map should support this.
States are also trying to nullify the votes of candidates by removing them from tickets. This is a flagrant example of election tampering on a large scale and the Supreme Court should squash this ASAP.
Wonderful comments. Democracy, always a system used by political hucksters for control of the masses, could eke by with a homogeneous population of white Christians. Now in a mongoloid nation every vote is a step closer to slavery. Much more effective ploy to get others to stop voting. Starve the bastards of credibility. The truth is the Electoral College is an anachronism. It lost al purpose with the end of the War Between the States. Before then it was understood that each state was to be an equal partner in a confederation of independent States. When the Federal government overthrew the Constitution it no longer considered the States as anything more than vassals to a Federal Government and whatever is best for the Federal Government trumps the Constitutional provisions that they nullified.
The nail in the coffin of State’s power in the District of Corruption was the passage of the 17th Amendment. Politicians know they can buy votes with their pork, so when States lost the ability to appoint Senators, the politicians went on a vote buying spree.
I recently read about the “progressives” spending 78 years attacking the appointment of Senators through numerous attempts at changing the Constitution.
Certainly, the 10th Amendment was weakened but I disagree that the Electoral system is outdated…..we will need it to block the next socialist, which will trigger the civil war but at least we get the moral high ground! The Census citizenship question being let go by Trump was a huge mistake…..I bet the real number is 30M+ illegal and reapportionment is strongly in favor of the Dem/Blue states as a result. We will regret Trump caving on that.

An electoral crisis could bring the political extremists out in the open and possibly necessitate a judicial resolution involving a contentious SCOTUS ruling on citizenship law. This would be more or less a temporary solution in my opinion because the socialists will never give up their discredited ideologies. They want a fight.

If the Democrats flood the election booths of any of their captive shithole cities with illegals votes, they still will tend to lose in the Electoral College because they have problems winning the majority of counties out in flyover land. Supposedly The Witch Queen beat Trump by 3,000,000 votes, but only carried 57 of the 3,141 counties. In the next 30 years we will see something like only 8 states having 70% of the population, and that will skew the imbalances even more. It will be fun to see the Democrats incessantly complain about something they can never change.
Another thing to remember is that in the upcoming financial and resulting crisis in government, don’t be surprised if new states are carved out of old ones. The fighting will be over rural Republican areas of Democrat stronghold states breaking off and forming new states. That may sound impossible right now but anything can happen when the whole country is basically under martial law, such as when West Virginia was carved out of Virginia.
Thus why we need Voter ID and apportionment based on actual citizens and paper ballots with an audit trail….and on and on…..Kind of reminds me of the Wreck Of the Edmund Fitzgerald.

Why do you think the brown hordes will only invade a few states? From what I see, enough refuse will be in enough states that will render the electoral college completely useless.

Maryland needs an electoral college to inject equality in state wide elections . Running for any state office you need only to win 2 or 3 counties and Baltimore city and the rest of the state residents be damned !
Those areas have 2 things assuring leftist policies state wide 1) the highest number of life long welfare recipients and 2) the highest number of government employees !
Funny how there is never a real effective cut in taxes for business and working families as real wages in the private sector plummet but always funds for not wit projects and raises for government employees especially in the top tiers ?
