They expect the Americans to defend them, so they can afford to give the defense portfolio to some power broker’s wife or girl friend, for the diversity brownie points. And her patron will at least know where she is during the day–safe at her office, issuing directives about caring and inclusivity.

The USAF Officers we suffered at base and headquarters levels when I served were more like the Pucker-bellies than the Russian General. They cared more about brown nosing, Affirmative Action, the O-club, golfing, and Spare Tail Assemblies than winning WWIII.
