Five years ago, I got to know the Mennonite builders well enough to visit their home and stay overnight a couple of times. Lorene was a marvelous hostess and I had the most delicious breakfast of fresh yogurt, berries and big fluffy omelets and all the fresh milk and cream and butter and biscuits and OMG… I shoulda been a Mennonite.
Her second oldest son went to work in Alaska for another Mennonite builder and his mother confided to me that when she visited and met his new girlfriend, she was frightened by how familiar they seemed to be, touching one another’s arm or thigh in a way she herself would never have done. I told her the young people are always more casual than their parents, but she was really anguished, fearing that her dear Jonathan was having relations. He was 20. I was happy for Jon when he married the girl a few months later, so his mother didn’t have to pray for his mortal soul any longer because he might be getting a little nookie.
Seriously, these are people committed to their vow with the Lord. Omer went on to build a multi-million dollar horse stable which afforded him the move back north.
