Paul Krugman Says Someone Using His IP Address To Download Child Porn

Via ZeroHedge

New York Times columnist Paul Krugman tweeted on Wednesday that someone is using his IP address – a numerical label assigned to each device on the internet – to download child pornography. He suggested that while he may be a random target, it “could be an attempt to Qanon me.”

Update: Krugman later tweeted “The Times is now on the case.”

Needless to say, the internet (which Paul predicted would be obsolete by now) is having fun with this:

Not disputing or refuting any suggestion he’s a bugger of boys, but,
methinks when he closes his eyes and spanks it, he might visualize Bernanke nekkid.
…being a Keynesian and all…

One for RiNS; &Kit…
-not sure if you caught this, but
The Habs played the Wingdings in Motown 1 or 2 nights ago.
During the national anthem, singer Karen Neuman (she’s a beaut, w/ a great voice)…
Usually sings a cappella without the organ keyboards behind her, well,
her mic crapped out shortly after beginning the Canadian N.A.
But in a show of comraderie class and common bonds, the fans in attendance made a great save.
Brief vid below.

I’ll try and cheer him up, RiNS.
If plans fall into place, I’ll be in his
area, and I’ll drive over with a six pack or moar,
and get to meet him F2F for a spell, shake a hand,
bitch about the State of the Union,
and help him yell at disrespectful kids
trampling in his front yard.
That is, if the Welcome mat is still out
for frens from colder climes. Believe so.
Oughtta be a hoot.

Be safe out there.

Total BS.

Your internet/networked computer/device has an IP address. This IP address is how a server you connect to can find your device in order to send back to you what you request from that server. For example, you visit a website and request a page from that website (e.g. this article). The server knows your IP address and sends the page back to your browser at that IP address.

Now a hacker can spoof (i.e. pretend) to be coming from your IP address i.e. visit a site and pretend to be coming from your IP address. The hacker requests a page from that server (or some illegal image) while pretending to be coming from your IP address. The server will then send the page/image back to the faked IP address (i.e. your IP address) and then what … ?? Your device is not expecting any traffic from the server the hacker is going to and so just ignores any unexpected traffic coming to it from that server. The returning traffic from the server will probably not even get past your router since the router knows what traffic to expect and will only accept traffic coming from servers that you have connected to.

So either Krugman is talking crap or he just doesn’t understand how this works and the nature of IP addresses and has expressed himself poorly. What is more likely, if you want to assume he is innocent, is that some malware has installed on his computer/device and that malware has downloaded something in a hidden manner in order to place illegal content on his computer/device. That is certainly possible. Malware can be attached to seemingly legit software and operate in the background without your knowledge. That’s a possibility which a forensic analysis of the computer/device will reveal and expose.

IP address can be spoofed. A MAC ID can trace to a particular computer. It can be spoofed, but it is a bit harder, not much though. You can bet you sweet ass that if any of the alphabet agencies wanna put shit on your computer, it will be 110% flawless and point directly to you with no footprints back to them.

@Cheesesteak

Yes, IP address can be spoofed – I said so. But there is a problem in that the content returned to the spoofed IP address will be rejected as not requested either at router level or O/S level.

Generally agree re what the alphabet agencies can do (probably) but thats another topic. I was addressing only Krugman’s IP address spoofing claim. I think he simply doesn’t understand the technical issue properly. Something is going on, such as malware, but it’s not that his IP address was spoofed and via that attack vector content suddenly appeared on his computing device.

A/C has a take on this topic. Reportedly, shortly before his tweet, an edit was made to PKs Wikipedia page, then removed as defamatory, then scrubbed from their server.
Then A/C mentions some speculation as to motive(s).

There is only one problem with the above title -He most likely does not have an IP address of his own. IP addresses on common computers get reassigned every time one connects to a network. This means every time one connects to a wifi or plugs in an ethernet cable, the router assigns an IP address to the computer connecting. In the still most commonly used IP4 standard we don’t have anywhere close to the number of IP addresses available as there are network devices. This is one reason why the router assigns them as sees fit.
There are static IP addresses. But those are rarely used and only for specific purposes.

What he said above..

Not a computer guy but pretend to be one at small company where I work. Seem to recall this being explained one time during one of the innumerable calls I made to local computer shop/provider trying to trace problems on our network and router.

I don’t buy what Paulie is selling. If I worked for FBI I would be right now planning a timely unscheduled visit to the Krugman abode.

One or moar of three things are happening.

3) Someone else is downloading Porn on his computer. —-Unlikely
2) There is a virus on that computer downloading Porn. —-Maybe
1) He is downloading porn. —-Probably

Whatevah the case Paul is dumb as a box of rocks for tweeting this…
