‘Those of us who did the right thing get screwed’: Father confronts Warren on student loan plan

Via The Washington Examiner

A father confronted Elizabeth Warren about her plan to forgive student loan debt in a tense face-to-face conversation, asserting that those who paid for college tuition themselves would get “screwed” under her proposal.

He spoke to the Massachusetts Democratic senator in a photo line after a presidential campaign town hall event in Grimes, Iowa, on Monday.

“I just wanted to ask one question. My daughter is getting out of school. I’ve saved all my money. She doesn’t have any student loans. Am I going to get my money back?” the man in an embroidered leather jacket asked Warren.

“Of course not,” the Massachusetts senator, 70, responded.

“So you’re going to pay for people who didn’t save any money and those of us who did the right thing get screwed,” he said.

Warren has staked her campaign on a plethora of bold left-wing policy proposals, giving her campaign the rallying cry, “I have a plan for that.” One of her plans calls for eliminating student loan debt of up to $50,000 for households making under $100,000, which would apply to about 95% of borrowers and wipe out student loan debt entirely for 75% of borrowers. Last week, Warren promised to implement her plan through executive action, bypassing Congress.

During the confrontation Monday, Warren protested, communicating that no one would get “screwed.”

“Of course we did. My buddy had fun, bought a car, went on vacations. I saved my money,” he said. “He made more than I did. But I worked a double shift, worked extra — my daughter worked since she was 10. So, you’re laughing.”

“No, I’m not,” Warren said.

“Yeah, that’s exactly what you’re doing,” he said. “We did the right thing, and we get screwed,” he added, before walking away from the photo line without a photo.

“I appreciate your time,” Warren said.

Warren was long seen as a more palatable left-wing alternative to Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders and saw a bump in Democratic presidential primary polls in late summer and early fall of 2019. But she has faded as Sanders regained popularity and sits in third place in the RealClearPolitics average of national primary polls with 14.8% support, while Sanders has 22% and former Vice President Joe Biden has 28.7%.

The Massachusetts senator had a fiery confrontation with Sanders in a “hot mic” moment after a Democratic presidential debate last week. She had alleged that Sanders told her in a private 2018 conversation that he did not think a woman could win the presidency in 2020, but Sanders denied making that statement. Although Warren said she wanted to move on from the dispute, she told Sanders after the debate, “I think you just called me a liar on national TV.”

The Constitution makes it quite clear that ALL revenue legislation MUST begin its journey in the House of Representatives, and MUST be approved by both houses before being signed into law by the president. Given the obvious clarity of this, how can anyone sit by and NOT call out this CLEARLY UNCONSTITUTIONAL proposal (bypassing Congress if necessary) as being just that?? This would be a REVENUE proposal. There would be a COST. Where would the money come from if NOT approved by the Congress?

How far gone are we as a nation when shit like this can come out of the mouths of people who have ALREADY taken an oath to uphold the Constitution, and will be taking another if elected?? Yeah, I know, we are in the shitter…

It’s political season campaign bullshit that will all be forgotten after the election.

Like any new president, the focus after the election will move away from campaign promises and back to dropping bombs, throwing love and money at Israel, fealty to the international banking cartel, Wall Street / MIC mega-giveaways, compounding regulations / taxation, and continual erosion of what few civil liberties remain.

Trump talked big but I’ll praise him after he finally finishes that wall, throws out all the beaners and H-1B Indians, and tells the chinks and EU and NATO to fuck-off once and for all. But so far, not one peep about altering the “relationship” with the Federal Reserve System – you know, (((them))) + Rockefellers / Stillmans.

Last I heard, 37% of Americans adults have a four year college degree. So 63% don’t (although they may have some college). Some people – a lot of people – didn’t want to go to college. Telling a guy who hangs Sheetrock or sells cars or houses that their taxes are going to go to pay off some Antifa’s student loans ain’t going to go over well. People like the guy in the video will be pissed. Kids who did two years in community college before transferring to a state school and who lived in their parents’ house are going to be pissed. This cunt from Harvard has no fucking idea.

The Chinese couple were very excited to become naturalized American citizens. When they had a baby it looked Chinese. They went to the doctor and asked “why doesn’t our baby look like an American – we are American citizens.” The doctor said that’s easy: “Two Wong’s don’t make a white.”

I’ve come to realize maybe all bets are off on the loony democratoony platoony. (What do you think? It has potential but needs something.)

You do realize a proposal like that will bring out the college-age in droves? Young twenty-somethings who have already run up more debt in school than some of us carried throughout our lives. Now, facing monthly payments which are probably rivaling most of their salaries, they are the perfect segment of the population for an Indian Princess to promise the Moon Blessing of debt dismissal. Poof! It just went away like that South Park kid’s money.

I’m kind of disheartened by recent events.

I kind of identify with WB, but also with many others. My grandson’s college debt is paid for – by me, with help from his other grandmother, with help from his father, who worked two jobs for years to help him, and by my grandson himself, who worked every summer, graduated in four years, went to work immediately, lived with a grandmother rent-free and threw about two thirds of his take-home pay at his college loans. We did the right thing and I do not regret it. Nor do I want to support those who demand the ‘free stuff’ or the politicians like Warren who pander to them.

However, there are many villains to go around in this debacle. Spoiled kids, obviously, but also colleges and universities that grossly inflated their administrative budgets to take advantage of government-guaranteed largess while at the same time doing a sh— job of preparing kids for the real world by offering ridiculous majors in various kinds of basket weaving. And, the dratted Obama administration federalized the student loan program as a revenue enhancer, which resulted in immediate increases in interest on those dratted loans while at the same time encouraging the greedy behavior of the ‘higher education’ bureaucracy, which inflated loan amounts still further.

So, while it enrages me no end to think indebted, foolish kids kids and their parents should get a free ride at my expense, maybe the first artillery fire should first be directed at the ‘higher learning’ institutions that exploited this thing. I mean make them pick up the tab and then make them guarantee/underwrite student loans from now on. AND, force them to reduce the disgusting numbers of ‘administrators’ and ‘assistant deans’ they have hired at six-figure salaries. Not to mention the obscene salaries paid to college presidents. Nothing is going to change until the crooks who robbed us get the hook.
Just my opinion.

Colleges should be required to co-sign all student loans. This would do away with all the BS degrees in gender studies, black history, etc. It would also insure that all of the students were qualified and were making progress towards a “real” degree or they would get no more loans.

That single change would eliminate 1,000’s of administrative positions and cut college costs dramatically.

Sue, glad to see you are getting warmed up for when the day Social Security and Medicare go insolvent but we are told by our caring government that we should feel good that 40 million illegals are having their dignity preserved by being allowed on our retirement and medical plans that we, as wage earners, paid into over decades.

Here’s how to cut college costs:
1) get the government out of the student loan business
2) allow student loans to be discharged in bankruptcy

That would eliminate 80% of student loans. Studying something that will make you employable? Student loans might be available. Chicano studies? No student loan for you.

Colleges would have to cut costs as they see their enrollments plummet. Teachers would have to teach. Womyns Studies departments would be closed. Colleges would default on the debts they took on to build fancy student centers and student housing. It would be a glorious collapse. Ex-sociology professors would have to drive for GrubHub.

It may be immoral, but it’s not unconstitutional. Congress has the explicit power to tax and spend to “provide for the general welfare”. Things like transfer payments don’t have to be specifically “sanctioned” by the constitution.

Disagree vehemently with this whole debt forgiveness on potentially extended childhood sojourns called higher education, yet if the debt is to be wiped one would have to say that ALL records of having attended such circus school have to be wiped.

No diploma, degree or MBA, the piece of paper must be handed back, the circuses are to forensically expunge all vestiges of you attending their circus and make it a felony crime if you claim to have attended such circus or have completed a circus event.

BTW a simple common law contract saying once we wipe your debt, you can’t claim any reference to your circus training should suffice. Now sign here and face the full brunt of the law if you breach and pst if you breach contract your debt plus interest has been re-activated.

I know it is simple but like they teach in bullshit schools KISS, Keep It Simple Stupid.

I think degrees in lesbian gender studies would ultimately be abolished and then can get back on track with real higher learning.

Unfortunately, what I would like to see is not going to happen. On another related tangent, the only hiring governments should do is hire people with an IQ of >80 & <90, to read contracts. Hey, don't laugh, if those dumb shits don't understand it then the contract contains to much legalese and not enough plain English.

I have always said that the more legalese in a contract the more that organisation wants to and will be screwing you over. Here's looking at you bankers.

Think of all the ambulance chasing lawyers out of business, the "just for them" courts mostly out of business and the amount of confusion cut to minimum. We sign this, you do this I do that and we work mutually to what we signed for. You breach, your fucked.
