Flu Virus Clinical Trial Will Pay Volunteers $3,000 To Be Infected

This is the time of year health officials routinely remind people to get their flu shots.

So it may seem strange that researchers are looking for people to infect with an influenza virus. And they’re willing to pay.

Up to 80 volunteers age 18 to 49 are needed for a clinical trial supported by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, part of the National Institutes of Health.

In what is called a challenge study, healthy volunteers will be infected with an H1N1 strain of the influenza A virus to understand what happens when a person is infected and how the body controls the infection, according to a news release from Saint Louis University, one of four study sites.

Participants who complete all the steps in the trial, which could take about four months, could be paid up to $3,310.

The study includes a weeklong stay at an inpatient facility after the volunteers receive the flu virus through a nasal spray.

“The challenge virus … was developed by NIAID scientists and reliably produces mild to moderate influenza disease in most recipients,” according to an NIH news release. “It has been administered to approximately 400 participants in four previous influenza challenge trials conducted at the NIH Clinical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. No significant safety issues or severe or complicated cases of influenza occurred, and no transmission of the virus outside of the clinic was seen during the earlier trials.”

The lead study site is the University of Maryland School of Medicine. The other three are Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, Duke University and Saint Louis University Center for Vaccine Development.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates 36,400 to 61,200 people died from the flu in the United States between October 2018 and May 2019.

The CDC recommends that everyone 6 months and older get a flu vaccine by the end of October.
