As a white person in 2020 America, your best bet (if you want to keep your job, bank account, not go to jail, etc) is to turn and run away as fast as you can when you see a black person. Magazine. Empty the magazine if required to neutralize the threat. If the threat is not neutralized – reload and continue.
It’s a clip. When I joined just before talkies came out, a magazine implied a stationary holder or even a large room full of munitions. Magazines are what the Springfield 03 and M-1 garand had and you fed them with stripper clips. Clips were what we loaded our m-14, m-16 and m-2 carbines with. They are detatachable clips. It is only recently that the nomenclature has been changing.
Used the old style clipper strip a few times to load a vintage rifle…
Now it is all magazines for modern pistols and rifles.
Whatever you call em — keep them ready to go.
I always considered the attached well of certain rifles ( Mosin/Garand/Enfield) that accepted rounds the magazine and the detachable ones that you placed into a rifle the clip. That’s going back to the 70’s so maybe it changed since then, but I think Fleabags is right.
That’s how I remebered it, including pistol clips. It may have started changing after desert storm with the newer generation of military equipment. They will never convince me these new packs are more comfy than alice.

You can really get into the weeds on clips and magazines. I think it got started when the 30 rounders for the M-1 Carbine were called Banana Clips. It’s all downhill from there. Just to stir the pot, the 1912 Steyr loads an internal magazine via stripper clip. The Mauser C96 “Bolo” loads an internal mag via stripper as well as a couple of other obscure pistols, so Flea could possibly dump a whole clip into a miscreant with that being the correct description.

As a matter of fact, I carried 3 banana clips for my M-2 when I was walking around the compound and always had it handy when I was manning an mg on a plywood coffin in the delta. I loved that little thing. We called 20 round Mags for the 14 and 16 clips as well as 1911 mags. I rarely had contact with the Army so I have no idea what they would call them but we never paid attention to them anyway because we hated Westy.
