Language and Thought

Language and Thought

Seventeenth-century poet and intellect John Milton predicted, “When language in common use in any country becomes irregular and depraved, it is followed by their ruin and degradation.” Gore Vidal, his 20th-century intellectual successor, elaborated saying: “As societies grow decadent, the language grows decadent, too. Words are used to disguise, not to illuminate.” Sloppy language permits people to get away with speaking and doing all manner of destructive nonsense without being challenged.

Let’s look at the concept of “white privilege,” the notion that white people have benefited in American history relative to, and at the expense of, “people of color.” It appears to be utter nonsense to suggest that poor and destitute Appalachian whites have white privilege. How can one tell if a person has white privilege? One imagines that the academic elite, who coined the term, refer to whites of a certain socioeconomic status such as living in the suburbs with the privilege of high-income amenities.

But here is a question: Do Nigerians in the U.S. have white privilege? As reported by the New York Post this summer, 17% of all Nigerians in this country hold master’s degrees, 4% hold a doctorate and 37% hold a bachelor’s degree, according to the U.S. Census Bureau’s 2006 American Community Survey. By contrast, 19% of whites have a bachelor’s degree, 8% have master’s degrees and 1% have doctorates.

What about slavery? Colleges teach our young people that the U.S. became rich on the backs of free black labor. That is utter nonsense. Slavery does not have a very good record of producing wealth. Think about it. Slavery was all over the South and outlawed in most of the North. I doubt that anyone would claim that the antebellum South was rich, and the slave-starved North was poor. The truth is just the opposite. In fact, the poorest states and regions of our country were places where slavery flourished: Mississippi, Alabama and Georgia, while the richest states and regions were those where slavery was outlawed: Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey and Massachusetts.

Speaking of holding people accountable for slavery, there is no way that Europeans could have captured millions of Africans. They had African and Arab help. There would not have been much black slavery in the U.S., and the western hemisphere in general, without Africans exchanging other Africans to European slave traders at the coast for guns, mirrors, cloths, foreign alcoholic beverages and gold dust.

Congressional Democratic lawmakers have called for a commission to study reparations, but I have not heard calls to hold the true perpetrators of American slavery accountable. Should we demand that congressional Democrats haul representatives of Ghana, Ivory Coast, Nigeria and Muslim states before Congress to condemn them for their role in American slavery and demand they pay reparations?

Some of the greatest language mischief is related to terms such as racial “disparities,” “gaps” and “disproportionality.” These terms are taken as signs of injustice that must be corrected. The median income of women is less than that of men. Black and Hispanic students are suspended and expelled at higher rates than white students. There are other race disparities and gaps all over the place. For example, blacks are 13% of the population but 80% of professional basketball players and 66% of professional football players, and on top of that, they’re some of the most highly paid players.

To be consistent with leftist ideology, those numbers seem to suggest that there is some kind of injustice toward Asian, white and Hispanic basketball and football players. But before we run off thinking that everything is hunky-dory for black players in football, how many times have you seen a black player kick an extra point in professional football?

What should be done to address these and other gross disparities? How can we make basketball, football, dressage and ice hockey, classical music concert attendance, not to mention incarceration, look more like America? In general, we should ignore disproportionality. There is no evidence, anywhere in the world, suggesting that people sort out in any activity according to their numbers in the general population.

The best thing that we can do is clean up our language. That will have the added benefit of straightening out our thinking so that we do not permit leftists to get away with making us feel guilty and believing in utter nonsense.

I will agree that white privilege is basically nonsense for the majority of white people in America . I was driving a 8 pound mall and welding and fitting steel at 18 constructing an oil tanker my first class mechanic that trained and mentored me was black ! I did the grunt work he got the bonus , we were cool he taught me , I was his helper and it wasn’t long I too got production bonus . The skills and lessons in life he taught me paid off overtime . I was able to fully fund private school and college for my daughter who now is a well paid BSN/RN ! Old Mason died 2 years ago at 91 , I meet his son and his widow and was able to share what a great man he was and he is surely missed ! Not bad for a blue eyed white racist devil !
As for grammar , Mason expected me to speak with calm respect and no profanity because it irritated him and he spoke with a calm reserve that commanded your respect . I recall it bothered him to witness young black men with their Street thug talk and foul language ! I guess he was a racist too by expecting better of them .
Now even education professionals are proclaiming proper grammar is white racism if you expect it from black students .
I will say that the prison sentence handed down to the Hollywood couple for the college entrance bribery scam is a true definition of white privilege ! Tried , convicted , sentenced and they get two months to put their affairs in order and stagger their sentences so both parents are not incarcerated at the same time .
As for the prison , she will have pottery classes and Pilates and will room in a 2 person cubicle .
Sorry Mason but WTF!
Everybody we ever knew of getting tried convicted and sentenced left the court in a jump suit and handcuffs !
I think there may be a case of privilege but not sure to tag white privilege to it , the former mayor of Baltimore got similar treatment ! Not sure if she has Pilates & pottery classes though !

I recently watched a movie called The Spinning Man. So so movie. But the main character was a Professor of Philosophy of Language. Let that sink in a minute.
His mantra was that the “truth” can only be told by someone how they perceive it, not in absolute.
Now we all know people’s perception is influenced by many factors. Childhood, race, income, gender, sexual orientation, where they live, and on and on.
The US Justice system is founded on the supposed finding of absolute “truth”, often discovered by a jury of our “peers”. These same peers will have their own perceptions based on their own backgrounds.
The jury is instructed to put aside their personal perceptions and base their judgement on the “facts” alone.
Except is that how it ever REALLY works? Or is a skillful defense attorney or prosecutor able to spin “facts” to his or her benefit?
Jury nullification happens when a crime is prosecuted by the jury DOESN’T put aside their personal beliefs, and instead, en masse, decides the crime, whatever it is, was justified.
We cannot live in a bubble where we believe truth is black or white. We may very well wish it to be so, but the reality is that it very rarely is.
Take premeditated murder. Reading that phrase may cause a gut reaction from someone. They may say “But if a jury of his/her peers found him/her guilty, then it must be so!” and that MIGHT be true.
But what if it’s not? How many innocent men or women have been handed down death sentences for murder, and then had that sentence acted out? That is why we have the very long drawn-out appeal process. You are talking about taking someone’s life. This should be done soberly and with every consideration given.
What we have happening now is completely different. We have angry mobs of people deliberately going out and causing mayhem and destruction, all in the hopes of some end game or goal. They are telling us that their desired end justifies the means. And for all intents and purposes, the DA’s in these locations are supporting their behavior. Which says they too no longer believe in the rule of law, that destruction, burning, looting, beatings, shootings, etc are all sanctioned for some glorious end goal of equality.
But what exactly will this equality look like? Because if we go down this rabbit hole NOW, then there is no standing on any truth anywhere. Angry mobs can descend on anyone and merely declare they are justified in their actions, and honestly, who can blame them?
This is why the courts, from police up to the AG of the US, must serve as the arbiter of law and order. Police are not there to be judge or jury. They are there to take purported criminals into custody to prevent them from further harming others or the community. The judges set bail and determine dangerousness as well as make sure the accused, the DA, and the defense resides well within the confines of the state or federal law and the constitution of both. The DA gathers evidence and proceeds to prosecute the crime. The defense builds a rebuttal to the crime. The jury hears evidence and renders a decision. The prisons carry out the sentence.
We have gone so far from this that the so-called “justice system” is anything but. It is now a tool of politics.

Small quibble: “The US Justice system is founded on the supposed finding of absolute “truth”, often discovered by a jury of our “peers”.”

Not absolute truth, no. I think it would be more accurate to say that our justice system is based on findings which are “beyond a reasonable doubt.”

Indeed, the jury is NEVER allowed to try and obtain any more information about a case than the two sides have presented (no matter how useless that information might be). In fact, jurors who actually know ANYTHING, are typically excluded because one side or the other plans on bullshitting their way through the evidence and they don’t actually want anyone who will question their lies (and yes, I have sat on several juries, including murder trials – what we call “justice” in this country is a travesty). If we actually DID have a system whose goal was to get to the truth, no matter what, we would be far better off.

When I was growing up I thought rough people said the word Fuck and had tattoos. Now it’s a normal thing. even people that are total pussies have tattoos. I see many nasty looking women with tats also. All these people with goofy tats on their legs, men also. It looks nasty or gay.
I listened to younger guys talking at work and they have a gang slang kind of way of talking.
If all this stuff made our country and society better I would be all for it. but it doesn’t.

I have found that refusal to participate in the tremendously overused foul language discourages others from continuing, and slowly they change back. As has been said, be the change you wish to see.

The human race is divided into intellectual, emotional and instinctive types, depending on which of the 3 brains is dominant. Emotional types have opinions based on how things make them feel. If a verifiable “fact” is offered which contradicts their emotional response the “fact” is also bad.
