Unintended Consequences and The Texas ‘Big Freeze’ Energy Disaster

Guest Post by Ron Paul

Viral Image of Helicopter De-Icing Texas Wind Turbine From 2016

Last week Texas experienced a cold snap that resulted in serious statewide damage, death, and destruction. The collapse of the state’s energy grid left millions of Texans in the dark and freezing for days at a time. Tragically, at least 30 people died.

There are many reasons why Texas became like a Third World country, and we should be careful not to pin all the blame on just one factor. But it seems clear that the disaster was to a large degree caused by political decisions to shift toward “green” energy generated from solar and wind and by Governor Abbott’s authoritarian Covid restrictions.

Abbott, who won a “wind leadership” award just this month, oversaw the near-collapse of wind energy generation last week. Yet the politicization of energy generation in favor of “green” alternatives over natural gas and other fossil fuels has led to the unintended consequences of freezing Texans facing multiple millions of dollars in property damage and worse.

Additionally, federal emissions and other restrictions forced Texas to beg Washington for permission to generate power at higher levels in anticipation of unprecedented demand. Governor Abbott finally received permission from the Department of Energy on February 14th, but by then many facilities found themselves off-line due to freezing conditions.

Why should the Federal government be allowed to freeze Texans to death in the name of controlling emissions from energy generation plants? It’s a classic example of politics over people. I guess if you want to make a “Green New Deal” omelet, you have to break a few eggs.

While Governor Abbott was quick to blame energy generators and even the state Electric Reliability Council of Texas, NBC News in Dallas reported that ERCOT “did not conduct any on-site inspections of the state’s power plants to see if they were ready for this winter season. Due to COVID-19 they conducted virtual tabletop exercises instead – but only with 16 percent of the state’s power generating facilities.”

Governor Abbott’s authoritarian Covid executive orders at least indirectly led to lax inspection, maintenance, and winterization of wind and other energy generation plants.

But Texas did not only freeze because of Abbott’s Covid restrictions. For the better part of a year thousands of businesses have been destroyed. Recovering drug addicts and alcoholics have relapsed. Depression and suicides have skyrocketed. Children have been deprived of education.

And for what? Texas with Abbott’s restrictions fared no better than Florida with no restrictions when it comes to Covid cases and deaths. The Texas governor knew that months ago when the data from Florida proved that lockdowns, masks, and other restrictions had no effect. But he refused to change course. He refused to follow the brave lead of Florida Governor Ron DeSantis and open Texas completely.

Politicians too stubborn or fearful to change course when facts dictate otherwise do not deserve to remain in office. Governors Gavin Newsom in California and Andrew Cuomo in New York are finally facing consequences for their Covid authoritarianism. When the smoke clears – and it is rapidly clearing – many more of these petty tyrants will fall. That list of deposed Covid tyrants may well include Texas Governor Greg Abbott – and the slumbering Texas state legislature – as well.

Let’s hope Texans – and all Americans – will learn from this and more forcefully demand their God-given liberty!

When the smoke clears – and it is rapidly clearing – many more of these petty tyrants will fall.

Wake me up when that happens because they have no plans to put a stop to this nightmare unless we force them to stop by refusing to comply. Do a search for “the next pandemic” and you will get lots of results. We have been living with viruses and bacteria for millenniums. Better hygiene and diets would have nearly eliminated the possibility of deadly pandemics if they had not monkeyed around with GMO food, Monsanto type deadly pesticides and herbicides. If they had not Rockefellered our medicine to the point where they only treated symptoms and not the disease. You get the idea.

Here’s one article that popped up for me on my search.

I wish Florida was as restriction-free as Dr. Paul thinks. Everywhere I go, everyone is wearing a mask. I’m literally the only person in the grocery store not wearing one. Yesterday, as I was approaching the cash register, some stranger said, “You forgot your mask,” to which I replied, “No, I didn’t.” It’s disgusting.

I’m glad you have called this out. I think Florida is passing itself off as this Air Breathers Paradise. I think they just want to increase the herd numbers there, until the final clamp down. Anyone I know of who lives or has moved to Florida are thumb sucking maskholes clamouring for the vax. What makes it more despicable is if there is no mandate and they STILL want to be mandated. oy.

Considering what’s been happening around the country this past year, and while it could’ve been better managed, I for one, am glad that I live in Florida. Our economy was and still is doing better than any other state, and except for Government mask mandates on Government property, the rest are just store policy, and unenforceable. Many of the people I see wearing masks are tourists, and while fewer in number than usual, there’s still a lot of them. Just might be the reason a certain someone is threatening to restrict travel to Florida, we make the rest of the country look bad. As for the others wearing masks, most are just sheep …. oops, I mean Liberals.

A couple of things you might find interesting that relate to both subjects; a short opinion on the mask/covid overreaction, and the other a Full-length documentary “Planet of the Humans” by Jeff Gibbs and Michael Moore. Yes, those same two heroes of leftist propaganda, finally get something right, well mostly right. They show that “Green Energy” is anything but green, something most of us already know, but I do enjoy seeing the Left eat their own.

Fifteen HARD LESSONS I learned from the “Texageddon” blackouts and collapse of critical
infrastructurehttps:

1. Survival is very physical. Expect to exert a lot of physical effort.

2. Culture matters. Don’t end up in a community without morals or ethics when it all hits the fan.

3. Convergence of two “black sawn” disasters can wipe out your best plans, even if you have successfully prepped for any one (standalone) disaster.

4. Some of your preps will FAIL. It’s difficult to consider all possible scenarios, so count on failures striking without warning.

5. You need LAYERS of preparedness and “fall back” systems that are very low-tech and require nothing more than the laws of physics (gravity, chemistry, etc.).

6. No one is coming to help you. In many situations, no one can get to you even if they wanted to.

7. Containers (buckets, barrels) are extremely important. Have lots of pre-stored water and fuel at all times.

8. Bitcoin and crypto were all completely valueless and useless during the collapse, since they all rely on electricity. Gold, silver and cash worked fine, on the other hand.

9. You will likely experience injuries or mishaps due to new, unusual demands on your work activities. Practice safety and be prepared to deal with injuries yourself.

10. Having lots of spare parts for plumbing. Standardize your pipe sizes and accessories. I have standardized on 1″ PEX pipe and all its fittings because PEX is very easy to cut, shape and rework. Plus it’s far more resistant to bursting, compared to PVC.

11. Investment in food is always a good investment, as prices will continue to climb. No one ever said during an emergency, “Gee, I wish I had less food here.”

12. You can’t count on any government or institution or infrastructure to solve anything. Usually they just get in the way.

13. You MUST have good lights and many backup batteries, or you will be sitting in the dark. You’ll need a good headlamp (I use the PETZL Nao+) and some good 18650-battery flashlights such as Nitecore.

14. Guns and bullets are not needed in some survival scenarios, so balance your prepping. Don’t put all your money into ammo and fail to cover other important areas like emergency first aid.

15. Think about what are stores of energy: Wood, diesel, gasoline, propane, water elevation, etc. Survival is a lot about energy management.

Outstanding list. I’d add to not stand out. Don’t make yourself or your home a target when the SHTF. If you are seen as a ‘prepper’ you will be a target. Grey man.

You make some good points. One other one to make:
In the even of a protracted emergency situation, there will be people who will just come and take your stuff.
They don’t care about you, your family, how much work you put into your prep. And even with ammo and guns, if there’s one of you and 10 of them you probably will not prevail.
Being able to leave where ever you are safely and quickly is a value that cannot be over estimated.
Survival skills such as trapping, fishing, foraging, are a key to survival in cases where you must leave and leave quickly.
Gas for your vehicle may be limited or unavailable, so good shoes are a must.
As Texas has shown us, just because you’re in the south doesn’t mean your immune to wild weather.
A big, bulky coat is not practical on the road as opposed to carefully thought out layers.
Medicine is probably much more critical than most people realize, and if you are a type 1 diabetic you are going to be in serious trouble really quickly, and through no fault of your own. Wild lettuce, which grows everywhere, can be harvested and boiled down to make a very effective pain medicine on par with morphine. The trading implications are huge.
People die from cold and thirst long before hunger takes them out. A 40 degree day that sees winds and rain can suck your body heat faster than a 30 degree sunny, dry day with no wind.
Being able to walk out of where you are and supply on the go could offer longer-term survival than staying put with whatever you have stocked.
Mobile targets are harder to find and hit.
Stay off the main roads, that’s a given. Stay quiet. No radios, no flashlights at dark unless absolutely necessary.
Cover your tracks when you leave. That includes your poop folks. Human poop is pretty obvious.
Women, you have different needs. Invest in a good menstrual cup. Lugging around tampons or pads is not feasible and you’re going to run out. And you have to get rid of them. A cup you can wear for up to 8 hours at a time, is reusable for years, and has no waste. And, I know it’s gross, but the blood can be mixed with meal or flour, dried, and used as bait.
Have a hair cut you can either do yourself or wear it long.
Get used to no comforts like deodorant, hair color, makeup, etc. No one cares.
If you have fake nails, get rid of them, they are useless and you can get injured in the woods from things catching on them.
Don’t wear any jewelry.
Invest in a solar powered battery charger for your phone. Even if the towers are down, you can download thousands of things onto the phone. Maps, manuals, medicinal books, guides, you name it.
Carry a flare gun
Carry bear spray. Good for assholes looking to do you harm as well.
Don’t carry a taser. A woman will have this taken from her and used on her.
A cross bow and arrows are better than a hunting rifle. Quieter and arrows can be retrieved and reused. Also works on assholes.
Learn to make a snare. Squirrels are delicious just like rabbits.
Frogs are good eating.
A portable water filter. Berkey is the best in my opinion.
Matches are great, but again, you need to carry quite a bit and if they get wet, your fucked. Lighters, same thing. A sunny day and a magnifying glass and some dried grass…fire. At night no fire, draws assholes.
A really good, arctic sleeping bag that zips over you entirely. A tent is not going to keep you warm if it gets too cold and what if your tent is damaged or stolen?
Bug spray. Making your own is maybe better, you can find ingredients on the go to do this too. Plus bug spray has a fairly unique smell that everyone knows, including assholes.
Keep your feet dry. I mean really dry. Wet feet will be your Achilles heel, no pun intended. A fungal infection coupled with chronically wet feet, a cracked toe nail…recipe for disaster. Plus makes walking uncomfortable.
If you wear contacts, get glasses. You’ll lose a contact or run out and then your fucked.
Bring booze. Booze is great to disinfect AND to trade and often assholes can be bribed to leave you alone. Forget liquor stores after a crisis. Think old people’s houses, they will have weird booze no one wants or has heard of, like sherry, chartreuse, Pims. Still works. Restaurants may also be a good choice, but don’t go into chains. Think family owned places that have basements where they will store the stock. Even diners that don’t have a liquor license may still cook with booze and have it.
Women, invest in a really good, ugly, utilitarian bras. Forget lacy and pretty. There’s no support, they will rip or can easily be ripped off you. You want wide straps, multiple hooks, and full coverage for long days on the road. Your back will thank you.
Same with underwear. Cotton. No synthetics.
Soap. Soap is always one of the last things thought of. Bars are lighter than liquid and last longer if you get the good kind, something made by the Amish. They also can be broken up into smaller pieces for barter. And won’t spill.
You can actually make your own if you find some lye and fat. Any fat. Bacon fat will work.
Lip balm. This is another one people will forget. Just get store bought cheapo brand, they are small and good for trade. Coconut oil works too.
Things probably worth investing in:
Night vision goggles
A wind-up style watch
Pocket calendar that’s waterproof
Lastly, unless there’s no other choice, you need a traveling companion you trust 100% that will not be a burden and can add something not subtract.
If you’re a woman you have to be brain damaged to travel alone or with only another woman. Bad move. You need a man and not a SJW snowflake that has a body that is soy-infused. No. A real man with a brain and still owns his biological protection urge. A simple fact of life is a collapse will bring out the worst, and the worst will do egregious things to a woman, probably for a long time, and not give one shit. So get over it ladies and literally man up.

Wishful thinking on the part of many women today will be their downfall.
I am all for women being well-prepared, able to defend themselves when they can, shoot a gun, etc.
But reality says when the shit hits the fan, the bad people will do bad things. And those include rape and physical violence.
A woman alone or even in a group of three, four, five, etc. is just that many more targets for a group of armed men.
Stupid movies depict female spies that weigh 120 pounds beating up large men. Not going to happen, ever.
It gives younger girls a bad picture of what they are really capable of.
Gina Carano, who has been in the news a lot lately, is an MMA fighter and could probably go toe-to-toe with the vast majority of your average man out there.
But someone who is 6+ feet and out weighs her? Sorry, nope.
Your best bet as a woman who is like me, 5’3″ tall? Hide if that’s all you can do and group up with men who are not beta males.
And if faced with immediate violence from a single man? Strike first, and make sure he is well and truly out and then get the fuck out of there.
Don’t feel bad, don’t look back.

With all due respect, there was not mention of the elephant in the sky, weather warfare.
Texas was on their way to start secession. That’s a no-no as far as the sociopaths in D.C.
are concerned. History doesn’t repeat, it rhymes. Honest Abe was willing to sacrifice lives to keep the hallowed Union intact. The final count was around 600,000 under the cover of ending slavery. Sure, one can analyze the grid, energy companies and energy decisions.
This has all the earmarks of weather warfare. When will the sheeple realize that the powers that be can teach you a lesson without you even knowing it if you don’t know or want to believe in weather weapons. The best site I know is geoengineeringwatch.org with Dane Wigington.

Apply the razor.
What’s more likely?
The govt engineered a fake winter storm to prevent an all-but-impossible secession
OR
a random winter storm came along and wallopped the Texas?

It’s not like it never happened before.
