The Behavioral Sink: A Fable For Our Times

Guest Post by Hardscrabble Farmer

Not long after the last of the last American soldiers returned home at the close of WWII, a little-known ethologist named John B. Calhoun set up a quarter acre pen somewhere on the outskirts of Rockville, Maryland and populated it with several dozen Norwegian rats. His experiment was meant to see just how large the population density would become if they were provided with adequate food, water, shelter and protection from predators so that all of their needs were met. Fellow researchers dubbed his experiment rat utopia and before long he had discovered the answer to his question.

When his research caught the eye of bureaucrats at the National Institute for Mental Health, they approached him with an offer of unlimited funding for another project along the same lines under stricter conditions than the bucolic environs of a pasture just north of Washington, D.C. By 1954 he had devised a complex interior setup for his rats to inhabit that divided the environment into four cells, each configured to provide a continuous supply of food, water and bedding with plenty of space for nests and open areas for social interaction. Into each of these he placed an equal number of both male and female rats and simply watched as they began to at first explore and then to colonize and dominate their surroundings.

There is very little material available about his research today, though at the time he was a media darling. During this period Americans had become concerned with the concept of overpopulation, due in large part to popular media and its constant focus on a “population bomb” that threatened to exhaust the Earth’s resources if something wasn’t done about it. As his research was just beginning to demonstrate the consequences of overpopulation the New York Times book review was pushing dystopian works such as Stand on Zanzibar and Paul Ehrlich’s The Population Bomb.

Years before Mao began his enforced One Child Policy, American cosmopolitans were aggressively selling the concept of ZPG, or zero population growth in the pages of Time. Back in the government lab that housed the ever-growing population of rats, certain unpleasant realities were beginning to manifest themselves in the behavior of the colony. Calhoun was able to observe a recurring pattern, broken into four distinct phases that repeated itself each time he re-stocked his utopian environment; Exploration, Exploitation, Stagnation, and Death.

In the first phase the rodent experiment the numbers were such that the social order was rapidly established, hierarchies arose within days and the dominant males created harems of available females and guarded them against the lower ranking competitors. Feeding areas were designed so that no individual could eat alone but rather had to share communal trays. The choice nests were established at ground level while the lowest ranking members of the colony had to climb towers to their nesting spot.

With plenty of space and endless supplies with a small population resulted in a living space that was, as far as brown rats go, copacetic. During the exploitation phase two discernible differences arose- a rapidly growing population and an increasingly hostile environment. The dominant males controlled access to the quadrants where their harems lived while the lower ranking members turned to an endless cycle of violence towards each other as well as the younger generation of rapidly maturing rivals.

As the population grew to the point where no rat was able to find privacy, the third phase began in earnest. At this stage Calhoun observes that the rats have entered what he calls a behavioral sink, a situation where aberrant and destructive behavior becomes the norm and normal behavior is no longer possible. For example, the females abandoned their young, attacked them, or oddly enough, became sterile. Certain numbers of both male and female became- according to Calhoun- somnambulists.

They slept the majority of their lives emerging only to gorge themselves at the feeders while the rest of the colony slept, slowly becoming enormous and dying far earlier than the other rats. The subordinate males clustered together between the quadrants and controlled the access to food for the younger rats, violently attacking them and each other. They also turned into pansexuals, neither interested in mating but rather engaging in homosexuality and self-gratification in their nests for extended periods of time, often damaging and disfiguring their genitalia and pulling out their fur.

The remainder became probers, a constant source of irritation to the dominant males who used every available means to keep them away to the point of exhaustion and eventual submission to groups of predatory male rats who would kill them and raid their harems, killing the offspring and even the females. At the peak of the population which reached over 2,200 the entire colony entered the terminal phase and once reproduction ceased it was simply a matter of time until the natural cycle of rodent mortality ended the experiment yet again. Over and over for years until NIMH pulled the plug and ended its funding of Calhoun’s Mortality-Inhibiting Environment for Mice. Utopia, at least for rodents, remained elusive.

In the years following the release of his publication entitled Population Density and Social Pathology plenty of people jumped on the bandwagon and tried to turn the results into a commentary on modern urban living and overpopulation. Tom Wolfe’s final chapter of The Pump House Gang was originally a short essay entitled “Oh Rotten Gotham! Sliding Down Into the Behavioral Sink” followed by a novel, later turned into the children’s movie The Secret of NIMH, by Robert O’Brien, a very dark and decidedly un-child friendly dystopian cartoon featuring scientists carrying out a rodent genocide. Calhoun continued on with his work, but never returned to the rats again, calling the outcome of his experiment ” a Malthusian dilemma born of a Utopian vision”.

The planners at the World Economic Forum have a lot of ideas about the future of the Earth’s population and if you’ve somehow missed the agenda they have outlined, maybe now would be a perfect opportunity to see what they are lining up for us. Concentrating people into urban clusters, providing us with all the food we could ever need, eliminating privacy, and on and on in the Great Reset.

One could reasonably conclude that all of those experiments done on the taxpayer’s dime so many years ago at the National Institute of Health would have made some kind of impression on the people who are paid to look at such outcomes. It could be safely assumed that they understand that by confining any living creatures in large numbers and in tight spaces, regardless of the necessities provided, would lead to certain consequences. Perhaps they have looked at the data and they do understand what occurs when a Utopian society is allowed to flourish and that is the endgame.

But then we’re not brown rats.

i wonder if you also noted the correspondence that jumped out at me? I’m thinking of how the Exploration, Exploitation, Stagnation, and Death stages might map to Strauss and Howe’s Fourth Turning phases. The way humans exercise self reflection might be the reason why the end (saeculum, nation, civilization) is never really the end.
This link has a good overview of the Strauss / Howe turnings.

I replied, but that was never my takeaway. I can’t quite stretch my mind enough to believe that a group of obscenely rich and powerful, megalomaniacal, largely psychopathic group of “elites” can work perfectly in concert and predict the future well enough to make these types of things happen. There are conspiracies, of course, the bullshit narrative must come from somewhere, of course…but I just tend to think of these things in a more natural, game-theoretic framework. In other words, the sum of the globalist individual and group incentive structures, and the actions taken thereby, lead to the things we are seeing.

But who really cares…things at that level will take care of themselves. Trying to change it is like a ship at see trying to change the path of the hurricane.

My takeaway, is that we (All Humans) NEED struggle. We need trials and tribulations and yes, suffering and pain. Every bit as much as we need food and water and shelter and love and encouragement and all the “good” stuff.

Hedonism, at the individual level, and Utopia, at the society level, are the most dangerous ideas human beings have ever had.

anon
anon

The people that want us dead (and they say so on occasion) have always had more groups they belong to, and most have a racial hive mind so acting in concert is easier. It’s even codified in a religion.

The psychopaths like game theory because it fits their psychopath mind, but it doesn’t really help understand anything directly. However, it might be instructive that the same guy (A Beautiful Mind!)created a game called Fuck You Buddy.

DRUD
DRUD

I have no idea what psychopaths like. I think Game Theory is a very useful way examining natural phenomena. I don’t really give a shit who discovered it, beyond it’s an interesting story. Thinking about nesting incentive structures works on all levels. I think most people over-simplify what it is or apply it far too narrowly.

Not sure what you’re implying about Nash creating an actual game. He discovered Game Theory. He didn’t create it any more than Newton created the Laws of Motion.

Nash did not discover game theory, which long preceded him, he simply proved a fairly simple theorem regarding certain outcomes in game theory…..

They need only work in concert on the things they agree on. They agree on accumulating more power and wealth. They cause untold destruction from the things they disagree. I found the article fascinating specifically since I’ve been noticing similarities with the No Go Zone of France. I moved here in 2008, and there was already quite a bit of violence going on, burned cars, destroyed stores, theft and other burglaries.
I do not posses a TV thus I do not get the fake news the French media is vomiting every minutes of the hours (that includes adverts). I do however read a interesting post which is somehow connected with the cops and it lists incidents occurring daily, updating every time a new incident appears. Most of them are national, some Europeans, some Americans but seldom.
Back in 2008, there were approximately one murder every 3 or 4 days. Today and just about every days since the New Year, there was at least one violent death in this stupid nation where people do not have the right to defend themselves (In France if a crime is not solved it didn’t happen and the cops do not work very hard since they go to jail in case of self defense). Today for example one man was stabbed and die because he complained of the noise some neighbors were doing partying at 2 O clock in the morning and died. The culprits were well known to the police (which means they were from below the Med). A 14 years old girl was stabbed (DOA) during a gang altercation. A 20 years old was shot near Angouleme. In the country that has very strong anti-gun laws, most citizen can afford the high costs of purchasing one (you have to belong to a club for over a year to buy one then wait another year before you can bring it home and you’re not allow to purchase lots of ammo) it seems to me there are lots of weapons unaccounted for.
Those people are not rats of course, but they sure behave like the ones in the story.

The experiment obviously describes city or high density life. I live in a typical suburban area, a full range of income levels in a five mile radius. Violence (shootings) have markedly increased in 2021, factually speaking, mostly gang related and predominately one racial group. I guess its time to exit the rat race (which I am in the middle of doing).
This story is a good reminder why we all need to change our paradigm.

It seems rats just keep following civilization.

It is becoming increasingly clear (to those not blinded by normalcy bias) that every single policy in every single part of our lives put forward by the “elites” has as its goal the culling of the human population. I am somewhat relieved to observe a lot of people noticing this and wrestling with what to do. Personally, I don’t think TPTB have any intention of providing unlimited food supplies to the American population. In fact, I believe food scarcity (and starvation) policies are dead ahead.

And India with 1.1 Billion people in a land mass a mere one-third that of the USA is an even bigger puzzle. They should have been in Death throes decades ago.

My best guess, insofar as India, is that it’s cultural — has been for a long while.

If you’ve ever been to India (I was there in 2000), you’d see how they crowd together — and the way that they crowd together — in an ashram setting. They’re also used to squatting in ways that we could never do. They sit far, far closer together than we in the US would ever imagine doing … kind of like the ‘asshole-to-bellybutton’ notion that the Drill Instructors in the Marine Corps used to have us do in bootcamp at Parris Island.

I’d imagine that the chinese are acculturated in similar fashion … but that’s just my guess.

You missed my point — it’s not about these “unmovable” societies not being able to do whatever it takes to stay alive, it’s about *our* society not being able to learn enough from our own “advancements” to stay alive. The funny thing about the rats-in-cages “experiment” is that it only works if you can keep the rats in the cages. Leave the rats alone and they wouldn’t volunteer to stay in their cages. Right?

It’s not just about population size…its about ease. An environment without struggle. That could hardly be said about India or China. But the USA for the past 75 years or so? Never in history has there been so much wealth, so many resources and so little struggle.

One could easily make the argument that the West is much closer to the death stage than the East, despite having lower population densities.

Excellent point–struggle engenders survival instincts. Like the Fall of Civilizations cycle and the decline to Apathy in the Roman Empire decline model..when a population’s needs are met with minimal effort, the spirit to thrive dies.

Actually, I think locusts are a rather good model for our financial, rent-seeking “elites.”

javelin
javelin

Actually locusts are a great example of this die off model. Locusts are essentially grasshoppers. Grasshoppers live fine, happy lives but theories show that once a certain density of population is reached and food becomes scarcer ( and vegetation/wetness factor in also) that grasshoppers over-breed, then the crowding of the population triggers a change ( mutation?) gene that causes them to physically change and swarm. Once they change to locusts and begin swarming, then a mass culling of the overpopulation occurs.

* also there are studies that show the physical contact of rubbing against each other in dense population may trigger the latent gene to transform to locusts.

One HUGE element missing in the mice/rats and the experiment. FREE WILL. Everything, every act, every nudge, every bit of misinformation, our depleted nutrient food source, our chem-trailed skies, the overhead announcement, the lines on the road, the red/light green light mentality, EDUCATION and on and on and on. It’s all designed to diminish, “contain” and “erase” our FREE WILL. But look how much has to be done and it still does not work…on EVERYBODY. They collect all our data so that maybe, perhaps, they must. be able to “train” the AI to duplicate FREE WILL — to conquer it. FREE WILL belongs to the soul, sources the mind which feeds (a healthy) brain. Everything is happening in reverse, though. Our brains are being destroyed by contamination. Bad Food. Heavy Metals. Vitamin and Mineral Deficiencies. Toxicities. A malfunctioning brain produces a mind full of deleterious thoughts (and therefore, actions and behaviour)…..It’s the soul they are after now. THAT IS THE ULTIMATE CONQUEST. They have weakened much of the populace to get to the soul. BUT THEY CAN’T TAKE IT….we give it away.

See Bee, right on the mark! I’ve said for decades that it’s about the will. The war that is waged by Satan, the Elite, the Borg, or whoever is against the will. The essence of evil and power is to impose one’s will on others. The will is a special part of our soul; the other parts being our mind and our emotions. It is all we have left when everything else has been taken away. Elitists know this and that’s why they say “You will own nothing and be happy”.
What does television, video games, drugs, pornography, gambling, various techno-gadgets, and power seeking all have in common? ……. They are addicting! Who, or what, are slaves? ….. A slave is one whose free will has been surrendered or taken away. Those who are addicted to the above have all become slaves to their addictions. And that is the goal–to create a world of slaves! Thus, the relentless push for us all to engage in those activities. Those activities are more than just a casual poison to our bodies, souls and spirits–they are the enemies chief strategy! The U.S. Military biological weapons program has been creating a vaccine that is specifically formulated to immunize targeted individuals and populations against the expression of the God gene, also known as vesicular monoamine transporter 2 (VMAT2).

The suppression of VMAT2 has been a primary goal of US biological weapon laboratories for decades with the ostensible purpose of neutralizing terrorists who act on their religious fanaticism. A thought-provoking post. Interesting how the scientist centralized sustenance that, initially, facilitated genetic instincts which were later warped or extinguished.

Although Calhoun’s rat experiment may be somewhat of a misnomer because it lacked a control group, the outcome of the study still has anthropological relevance. It raises the question: How does one affect positive change in a closed system? Reason? Logic? Deus ex machina?

Other questions might include: What is a de facto “closed system”? And who defines “positive change”?

RiNS

The control group are people.

I don’t even disagree that there needs to be a die-off. It’s just a matter of who. If white people had stopped feeding other people, this wouldn’t even be a problem.

Those same people we have been feeding directly, or giving our technology to so they can better exploit their own environment, also seem to be the ones who are able to live in close contact in cities without dieing off.

Yes, I’m conflicted on that. Aside from not wanting family and friends to take the “vaccine”, part of me thinks that it is beneficial in the long run for these NPC automatons to get what they so badly want. But that just puts one on the side of the evil fucks like Gates, no?

On the other hand, the NPC crowd want you to take the “vaccine” too, or take your liberty, assets, and/or life, so fuck them. But many non-NPC that are otherwise good people are pro-vax because of extreme brainwashing through fear, so they know not what they do… I’ve said this before: what makes the coming times so difficult, when the S really HTF, is that — aside from the physical demands and hardships — will be the mental strain of dealing with the fact that many innocent lives will be caught up in the destruction as collateral damage.

We all know that life is unfair, and on some level none of us is innocent, but there are levels to life’s unfairness. Think of how scum such as Hitlery skated on all her crimes, whereas many children will get debilitating diseases from a “vaccine” that their parents thought was a good idea. Simply juxtaposing those 2 things in terms of life-justice (to make up a word) pisses me off somethin fierce. I think that is why there has to be something to karma as a concept.

brian

pisses me off somethin fierce.

It should piss off anyone with a brain. The truly frustrating thing is not being able to stop the innocent ones from being harmed. There are many people who ARE sincere in their belief that what they are doing is right. But they can be sincerely wrong, like with the vax. But because we tend to honor the tenets of freedom means we have to allow them to choose, even when wrong and warned.

Agree. Baudelaire is attributed with the (paraphrase of his original*) quote, “The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world that he doesn’t exist.” But I disagree. The greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world that GOD does not exist. And boy, has he ever. As PO’d as I get in regards to this present “cancellation” campaign on this particular front of the culture war, I catch myself praying for the well-meaning people who subject themselves to the vaccines, the media lies, who trust the liars in .gov, etc., because they were born into a system that was already so subverted, corrupted, and anti-truth that – as most here can attest – waking up is an escape from hell’s own labyrinth.

Come, Lord Jesus. Have mercy on the pure of heart who have been led astray by the smoke that surrounds us all.

*Actual quote: “The finest trick of the devil is to persuade you that he does not exist”

“The study found exhaled air from a person who is not wearing a mask moves downward due to gravity, and would fall on a patient or customer.

However, when a mask is worn while standing or sitting, the cloud of exhaled particles tends to attach to that person’s body and flows upwards.

But if the person is wearing a mask and leaning over, the aerosol cloud tends to detach from that person’s body and fall onto the client below.

The investigators also found face shields can prevent any aerosols that leak from around the technician’s mask from traveling down to the customer.

‘The face shield promoted the rise of the exhaled breath,’ said Ishii.

‘Hence, it is more effective to wear both a mask and a face shield when providing services to customers.”

Oh Man! Even if I could comprehend what the above means, this human experiment gets better with each passing day! Now if a mask wearer should reprimand an air-breather, we have the scientific evidence they are spreading the Covid by speaking to you!!!! Speakers are Spreaders!!!! Thank you, Jesus. A miracle has arrived. Tell them all to STFU.

The number of false assumptions needed to design those studies is staggering, from the description you gave. It is like they designed a study to imply what they want, without actually testing anything relevant.

Brings back a lot of memories. Back when I was in college, I would always get $50 from my parents for my birthday in September. I would always take it and buy some CDs. In ’95, I immediately went and bought Melancholy and the Infinite Sadness. A few weeks later, I heard the Pumpkins were going to be on Saturday Night Live…couldn’t wait and had no idea what songs they would play, since I never listened to the radio.

That live version of “Bullet with Butterfly Wings” was freakin’ amazing.

It bears repeating. Bergoglio, Cardinals Gregory(the Catholic Al Sharpton) and Cupich are driving a schism in the American church which they intend to result in Democrat pro-aborts and open borders NWO Biden/Pelosi/Durbin “Good Catholics” and Deplorables.
As Sharpton, er excuse me Gregory and Cupich say, the Democrats with open borders and welfare and so many “good things”cannot be judged over “just one issue of many.”
My Bishop (Rockford) as well as Pelosi’s (San Fran) and Durbin’s (Springfield) (not sure about Biden’s) publicly and vocally oppose the garbage espoused by Bergoglio, Gregory and Cupich.

What if TBP is the box? What if we are the brown rats and we continue to confirm one another’s tale. We are in a box and we think inside the box. Even when we believe we are thinking outside the box we are still inside the box. How many years have you scurried around this box making friends and enemies? Has this box become your home, your comfort? Are you a Karen that calls yourself Ted? A finger wagging …? Quick with a verse? Humbly pious?

Hardscrabble Farmer
Hardscrabble Farmer

Word on the street is that Earth is a closed system, so technically you’re correct, we’re all inside the box.

But that wasn’t the point of this story.

This was addressing specific plans by groups like the WEF and the Davos crowd who have stated clearly that the goal is to compel all human beings to leave rural areas and be moved into tightly control urban towers where all of our needs are met, such as food, shelter, allowance and that no one will have to work since robots will be doing everything. That is quite specific to the study which produced Population Density and Social Pathology. His earlier studies where the rats were in an outdoor closed system with much more space yielded wildly different results-

“Even though five females over this time-span could theoretically produce 5,000 healthy progeny for this size pen, Calhoun found that the population never exceeded 200 individuals, and stabilized at 150. Moreover, the rats were not randomly scattered throughout the pen area, but had organized themselves into twelve or thirteen local colonies of a dozen rats each. He noted that twelve rats is the maximum number that can live harmoniously in a natural group, beyond which stress and psychological effects function as group break-up forces.”

TBP is made up of people who voluntarily associate with one another in a cooperative (mostly) environment in order to mutually benefit one another. And since our study has been going on for a decade and none of show signs of social pathology such as violence towards one another, it’s safe to say the comparison is a poor one. And as the video Mary Christine posted above shows, these people feel that they deserve to tell the “rats” how it’s going to be because they are so much smarter and their plan is a virtual copy of Calhoun’s Mouse Utopia, so if they are actually as smart as they contend, they know how it’s going to end.

Sorry if I missed the point Farmer. Question everything and trust few. I find it difficult to rage against the machine since it is self destructing as I watch. There is little anger in me and why would there be when my life story was directed by me. I am just a spectator, cheering and booing as the momentum swings back and forth. I call myself a non practicing anarchist when asked about my leaning. My opinion mean very little to anyone else and most often I choose not to give it. I find the rat experiment interesting but not a predictor of future events. Rats have clearly evolved and found a mechanism to insure that they survive. Humans have not. I have a behaviorist background, it has affected all things. Stimuli & response. I watch with interest.

How long have humans tried to kill rats?

Are there any rats still alive out there?

brian

I found it to be somewhat like behavioral modification and not necessarily a very good representation of a societal model. Like someone else pointed out rats do nothing to improve their surroundings, which is what separates man from animals.

This doesn’t discount that there are people who will revert to animal behaviors and a small comparison could probably be made in this experiment to see if this is also something possible within the human experiment.

Glad you brought up the point.

I agree that this is the plan, but this plan just won’t work. This is one of those things that you “grok” after having to deal with real-world problems like fixing a roof, digging out a drain, feeding animals, growing plants, really anything that actually keeps things going for longer than … well, that’s what we’re finding out right now.

“the goal is to compel all human beings to leave rural areas and be moved into tightly control urban towers”

old game plan. genesis 41:48 “So he gathered all the food of these seven years which occurred in the land of Egypt and placed the food in the cities; he placed in every city the food from its own surrounding fields.” genesis 47:21 “As for the people, he removed them to the cities from one end of Egypt’s border to the other.” all in pursuit of the dream: genesis 22:17 “Your descendants will take possession of the cities of their enemies” and isaiah 60:12 “the nation that will not serve you shall be destroyed”

Maybe cities are just economic and technological centers of power. More potential for evil than good, but whose essential purpose is to be able to resist invaders. Anyways, they are no place for humans to live.

Population density was considered half the reason for the social collapse. The other was that they had all of their physical needs met, if I recall the study analysis correctly. I thought both were considered causes of the social collapse.

I am not sure if they controlled both variables. I will have to find the original study.

Hardscrabble Farmer

I watched hours and hours of Calhoun’s film and learned two distinct things-

1) That Calhoun was using the rats as a proxy for humans- as scientists have been doing forever- because he was concerned with the mathematical certainty of human beings population doubling in an exponentially collapsing time frame, and he hit that mark far more accurately than anyone else.

2) He was a decent human being, you can hear it in his words. What he was working on was the opposite of what NIHM was looking for in terms of application. All the rest is parenthetical.

What I find most fascinating about the study and the scenario in toto is the reality that they do not discuss: take away ANY of the security within that utopia and you get almost instant chaos. No food? Chaos. Food but no water? Chaos. Food and water but no sanitation? Illness AND chaos.

This is a Skinner Box for the entire world, just waiting to be manipulated and, well, purged.
